The natural religion was of great importance and popular with thinkers, philosophers and writers in the 18th century. According to the message of this idea a religion was treated in moral terms and it was believed that there are moral rules common among all people, and God is a Moral Lawgiver or a symbol of sanctity of these rules. In spite of the fact that the notion of natural religion does not exist today its forms can still be found in European awareness. But as the most important heritage of the 18th century idea of natural religion can be regarded nowadays our Western belief in human rights and their universality. In our value system these rights are supreme and „sacred”. It can be said that they are our new religion modeled on the natural religion and as its continuity.

Opis:
The characterization of Karol Wojtyła’s philosophical position most often points to two dominant trends: thomism and phenomenology. However, it is not so obvious whether the philosophical standpoint of Pope John Paul II can be characterized in the same way. Therefore, it is not surprising that the official statements of John Paul II (encyclicals and books from the pontificate period) more often criticize and reject than affirm certain philosophical trends. This strategy – reminiscent in many respects of the way the social teaching of the Church is formulated – gives grounds for distinguishing the ‘negative’ philosophy of John Paul II. It consists of what from the beginning Wojtyła referred to as the ‘philosophy of consciousness’ and what with time, as Pope, he also connected with the criticism of socio-political systems which originated from Descartes and the philosophy of Enlightenment.

W artykule podjęto problem teoretycznej ważności filozoficznych przesłanek koncepcji zrównoważonego rozwoju w kontekście współczesnej krytyki oświecenia. Punktem wyjścia jest silna teza znana z literatury przedmiotu: koncepcja zrównoważonego rozwoju to współczesna wersja oświeceniowej filozofii politycznej. W wyniku przeprowadzanych analiz osłabiono moc tej tezy. Stwierdzono, że filozofia zrównoważonego rozwoju została zbudowana na bazie niektórych aspektów oświeceniowych przesłanek, które są istotne ze względu na możliwość rozwiązania aktualnych problemów cywilizacyjnych.
In this article the problem of the theoretical importance of philosophical premises of sustainable development in the context of contemporary criticism of the Enlightenment was taken into consideration. A starting point is a strong thesis known from source literature: the sustainable development concept is a contemporary version of the Enlightenment political philosophy. As a result of the carried out analyses the power of this thesis was weaken. It was stated that sustainable development philosophy was based on some aspects of the Enlightenment premises which are essential for possibility of solving current problems of civilization.

W zakończeniu omawiana koncepcja została ukazana jako współczesna wersja oświeceniowej optymistycznej filozofii społecznej.
The article is an attempt to present principal philosophical theses which implicite or explicite are the basis of sustainable development idea. Among assumptions concerning metaphysics, epistemology, philosophy of history and anthropology, also axiological foundation of sustainable development is highlighted. In the final part discussed idea is presented as modern version of Enlightenment's optimistic social philosophy.

This article discusses the problems of language in John Locke’s thought. In the present studies the dominating considerations focus on the history of epistemology and philosophy of language. This study takes into account a broader intellectual context of the philosophy of language pursued at the turn of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. First and foremost it places the problems of language in the context of changes in the teaching of logic and rhetoric. Locke inspired the then beliefs about the significance of language as the tool of science and public discourse, in the questions of education, morality, politics, and religion. The English philosopher emphasized how important was the duty to shape the activity of the human mind, one of which was to develop linguistic skills; such skills are the condition of the reliability of knowledge and argumentative efficacy in social communication.
Artykuł podejmuje problematykę języka w myśli Johna Locke’a. Dotychczas dominują opracowania tej tematyki z zakresu historii epistemologii i filozofii języka. Niniejsze dokonanie uwzględnia szerszy kontekst intelektualny filozofii języka uprawianej na przełomie wieku XVII i XVIII. Przede wszystkim umieszcza problematykę języka w kontekście zmian jakie dokonały się w nauczaniu logiki i retoryki. Locke inspirował ówczesne przekonania o istotnym znaczeniu języka jako narzędzia nauki i publicznego dyskursu, w kwestiach wychowania, moralności, polityki, religii. W postulat właściwego kształtowanie aktywności ludzkiego umysłu wpisywał obowiązek dbałości o sprawność językową, stanowiącą warunek rzetelności poznania i argumentacyjnej skuteczności w komunikacji społecznej.

On the grounds of the analysis made by the author of the elaboration one can notice a strong tendency to the relativisation of truth performing in the context of the pluralist theology of religion. Representatives of the aforementioned trend want to question the objective character of truth. Such actions are aimed at leading to the statement that all religions are equally exceptional. To clearly understand the theses of pluralists, philosophical foundations of the pluralist theology of religion have been depicted. It must be stated that pluralists use philosophical notions selectively and instrumentally, which makes it possible to reach desirable conclusions. The contestation of the absolute and objective character of truth has serious consequences and exerts an influence upon the understanding of interreligious dialogue. The problem of resignation from one's own religious identity appears. Defending themselves against such an accusation, pluralists introduce the concept of orthopraxis as the criterion of truth. Consequently, the determinant of truth is its ability to realize itself in the proper demeanour. Views presented in the pluralist theology of religion constitute a serious reproach to Christian truth as well as biblical truth.

In these remarks I recall the attempts of pointing out the relations between philosophy and modernity in sciences in three distinctively differing point of view, that is the achievements of “the Enlightened Age” (in the sense of Ernst Cassirer), phenomenological philosophy (in the sense of Edmund Husserl) and the classicist conservatism (in the sense of Allan Bloom). In each of these cases an importance of those relations is being acknowledged. However it is not just differently evaluated and justified, but also the diagnoses and forecasts related to it look differently either.

Artykuł analizuje program filozoficzny Feliksa Jarońskiego, profesora Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego, sformułowany w dwu pierwszych dziesięcioleciach wieku XIX. Ukazuje go na tle przemian w kulturze filozoficznej przełomu wieku XVIII i XIX, przede wszystkim w aspekcie oddziaływania szkockiej filozofii zdrowego rozsądku, kantyzmu i tradycjonalizmu, przełamującego minimalistyczne i sekularystyczne tendencje oświecenia. Ustosunkowuje się do dotychczasowych interpretacji i formułuje własną, łącząc dokonanie Jarońskiego z długim ciągiem philosophia recentiorum, zapoczątkowanej w połowie XVIII w., ale będącej standardem akademickim i na początku wieku XIX, choć stale modyfikowanej o asymilację zmieniających się autorytetów filozoficznych. Mimo jej eklektyzmu zachowała ona aspiracje maksymalistyczne (zachowując metafizykę) oraz otwarcie na religię, a nawet na chrystianizm. W końcu sygnalizująco zestawiono to dokonanie ze standardami kultury filozoficznej i naukowej początków wieku XXI, kwestionującej standardowy charakter naturalizmu ugruntowanego na ideale wąsko pojętej filozofii naukowej.
This paper analyses the philosophical programme of Feliks Jaroński, a professor of the Jagiellonian University, the programme he formulated in the first two decades of the nineteenth century. This is depicted against the backdrop of the transformations in the philosophical culture of the turn of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, especially with regard to the impact of the Scottish philosophy of common sense, Kantianism, and traditionalism. The latter approach broke down the minimalistic and secularist tendencies of the Enlightenment. The present paper addresses the current interpretations and formulates its own position by linking Jaroński’s attainment with a long tradition of philosophia recentiorum, a trend initiated in the 1750s, but remained still an academic standard in the beginning of the nineteenth century. It is constantly modified by assimilating the changing philosophical authorities. Despite its ecclectical character, it has preserved its maximalist aspirations (while retaining metaphysics) and openness to religion, or even to Christianism. Eventually, this paper has combined it with the standards of the philosophical and scientific culture of the origins of the twenty-first century, the culture that questions the standard character of naturalism founded on the ideal of scientific philosophy narrowly understood.

The article concentrates on the analysis of the Enlightenment periods vision of science by Josef Sołtykowicz. His theories are examples of philosophical reflection of the Cracow Science Society. The starting point was the outline of the political and scientific situation from the second part of the XVII century to the first part of the XIX century also referring to the author’s biography.The main part of the article is the analysis of two Dissertations by Sołtykowicz published by the Cracow Science Society their yearly publication, in 1818 and 1820.The following points were taken into account: The roots of the society’s activities, the relationship between science and faith, popularizing knowledge, criticism of Rousseau and anthropological analysis of the roots, of the negative view of knowledge. These theories are worth analysing, unfortunately so far the philosophical thought of the members of CSS, has not encouraged work on them as they deserved. At the same time we can expect that the work of the scientists from the CSS significantly impacted on the progress of the philosophical reflection in Cracow, and also the wider picture of modern polish scientific culture.

Religia, rozum i postmodernizm wskazują na różnego rodzaju postawy wobec świata, przede wszystkim w wymiarze poznawczym. W książce Postmodernizm, rozum i religia Ernest Gellner przedstawił ich charakterystykę, samemu określając się jako zwolennik oświeceniowego rozumu. W związku z tym rozum został przez niego ukazany w jak najlepszym świetle. Zapożycza on to, co dobre z religii i postmodernizmu, oraz odrzuca ich złe elementy. Choć we wstępie Gellner przyznał, że każda para w obrębie tych trzech postaw posiada pewne cechy wspólne, to jednak w dalszej części rozważań traktował postmodernizm i religię jakby stanowiły dwa krańce spektrum, w środku którego jest rozum. Nie poświęcił również uwagi cechom wspólnym religii i postmodernizmu, które jednocześnie są niezgodne z niektórymi postulatami oświeceniowego racjonalizmu. W niniejszej pracy przywołano kilka wybranych tego typu wątków w kontekście języka, metodologii nauk oraz wy-branych szkół psychologii dwudziestego wieku. Za pomocą przeprowadzonej analizy pokazano, że religia posiada istotne cechy wspólne z postmodernizmem, których nie podziela z rozumem, oraz jednocześnie posiada cechy wspólne z rozumem, których nie dzieli z postmodernizmem. Uzyskana w ten sposób perspektywa stanowi kontrpropozycję dla ujęcia Gellnera, w którym racjonalizm miał jawić się jako zbalansowane i umiarkowane stanowisko usytuowane pomiędzy przeciwległymi sobie skrajnościami religii i postmodernizmu.
Religion, reason and postmodernism point to differenttypes of attitude towards the world, above all in respect of epistemic concerns. In his book Postmodernism, Reason and Religion Ernest Gellner presented their salient characteristics, describing himself as a supporter of Enlightenment reason. He thus soughtto show reason in a positive light, presenting it as drawing on whatis best in both religion and postmodernism while rejecting theirproblematic elements. However, he failed to attend to certain features common to religion and postmodernism that at the sametime contradict some of the postulates of Enlightenment rationalism. The present paper considers some selected threads of thistype that occur in the context of language, the methodology of science and selected schools of twentiethcentury psychology. Theanalysis proposed shows that religion shares some nontrivial elements with postmodernism that stand in opposition to reason,while at the same time having some elements in common with reason that are opposed to postmodernism. The perspective thus obtained constitutes an alternative to Gellner’s approach, in whichreason was made to appear as a balanced and moderate positionsituated between the opposite extremes of religion and postmodernism.

This paper combines on the one hand the educational ideals and didactics in the schools of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth reformed by the Commission of National Education (1773), and on the other hand one of the most representative testimonies of the then intellectual culture, i.e. Encyclopédie ou dictionnaire universel raisonné des sciences, des arts et des métiers, published in the years 1751–1780. It shows continuity with regard to learned culture and the place of philosophy in modern school. In accord with the standards of the Encyclopédie the European school preserved the course of philosophy in the spirit of philosophia recentiorum, at least at the university level. This philosophy took a critical approach in its assimilation of the elements of modern epistemology, especially the accomplishments of modern natural sciences. Such attitude was also typical of the school reformed in the mid-eighteenth century in the Commonwealth, especially by the orders of Piarists and Jesuits. The Commission had introduced independent mathematical and natural subjects, a fact that limited philosophy. In secondary schools philosophy was reduced to logic and practical ethics, and at universities to natural law with social, political, and economic elements. For this reason they even departed from a traditional structure of university, with a propedeuctic faculty of philosophy, when in the spirit of the physiocratic physical and moral orders a two-element structure of universities was established. Despite these changes, philosophical elements can be found even in the didactics of natural sciences in the schools of the Commission. The same tendencies are apparent in the then European school, therefore in the form of interpretations drawing on the category of substance and its properties, or even the conception of the animal soul.

Artykuł przestawia dydaktykę KEN, koncentrując się na ukazaniu reform oświatowych charakterystycznych dla epoki oświecenia. W szczególności ukazuje specyfikę styku ówczesnej filozofii i nowożytnej nauki, stopniowo wyzwalającej się z hegemonii filozofii. Wskazuje na dominujący podówczas duch utylitaryzmu, a w warstwie metodologicznej – programowy eklektyzm. Postawa ta ujawniła się w całym szkolnictwie europejskim, a więc nie tylko we Francji, przodującej przynajmniej w zakresie deklaracji programowych, ale zwłaszcza w centralistycznie reformowanej oświacie w monarchii habsburskiej. Jest ona także właściwa tak reprezentacyjnemu świadectwu ówczesnej kultury naukowej, jakim była Wielka Encyklopedia Francuska, do której nawiąże wprost KEN. W szkole europejskiej wzbogacano studium językowo-humanistyczne o kształcenie matematyczno-przyrodnicze, zachowując kurs filozofii w duchu philosophia recentiorum, przynajmniej na poziomie uniwersyteckim. Filozofia ta krytycznie asymilowała elementy nowożytnej epistemologii, a zwłaszcza osiągnięcia nowożytnego przyrodoznawstwa. Podejście to było typowe dla szkolnictwa reformowanego w Rzeczypospolitej Obojga Narodów przez środowiska wyznaniowe, zwłaszcza zakon pijarów i jezuitów. Z czasem coraz bardziej upowszechni się empirystyczna epistemologia, owocująca fenomenalizmem kwestionującym możliwość uprawiania maksymalistycznie pojętej filozofii w formie nowożytnego arystotelizmu chrześcijańskiego funkcjonującego w szkole tradycyjnej. Mimo krytyki tego modelu kształcenia, presja tzw. długiego trwania (longue durée) tłumaczy zachowanie w szkole oświeceniowej elementów filozoficznych nawet w przyrodoznawstwie, w formie interpretacji korzystającej z kategorii substancji i jej właściwości, a nawet koncepcji duszy zwierzęcej.
This paper depicts the didactic approach of the Commission of National Education (Pol. KEN). It focuses on the educational reforms characteristic of the Age of the Enlightenment. In particular, it shows the specific character of the then philosophy and modern science that gradually liberated itself from the hegemony of philosophy. It pinpoints the spirit of utilitarianism that dominated at that time, and in its methodological aspect policy eclecticism. This attitude was manifested throughout European education, therefore not only in France, which was leading at least in her policy declarations, but especially in the Habsburg monarchy whose education was under centralistic reformation. It was also proper to the then learned culture of the Encyclopaedia, or a Systematic Dictionary of the Sciences, Arts, and Crafts, on which the KEN would draw. The European school of linguistic and humanistic studies was enriched by mathematics and natural sciences, whereas a course in philosophy in the spirit of philosophia recentiorum was maintained, at least at the university level. This philosophy assimilated some elements of modern epistemology in a critical manner, especially the accomplishments of modern natural science. Such approach was typical of reformed education in the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth by religious milieus, especially the Piarists and Jesuits. In the course of time empiristic epistemology became more and more popular and bore fruit in the form of phenomenalism which questioned the pursuit of philosophy maximalistically understood in the form of modern Christian Aristotelianism in the traditional school. Despite criticism of this model of education, the pressure of the so-called long duration (longue durée) accounts for the maintenance of philosophical elements in Enlightenment school, even in natural science, in the form of interpretation that takes advantage of the category of substance and its properties, and even of the conception of animal soul.

Artykuł przestawia dydaktykę KEN w zakresie sformułowań programowych, podręczników i praktyki dydaktycznej, ukazanych na tle reform charakterystycznych dla ówczesnej szkoły europejskiej. W ukazaniu realiów kultury naukowej funkcjonującej w szkolnictwie zarządzanym przez Komisję skupiono się na oddaniu specyfiki styku filozofii i nowożytnej nauki, nieraz znacznie odbiegającego od realiów współczesnych. Nauczanie w szkołach KEN należy niewątpliwie do programowo eklektycznej kultury intelektualnej oświecenia, godzącej szkołę tradycyjną z postulatami nowożytnymi. Postawa ta ujawniła się w całym szkolnictwie europejskim, a więc nie tylko we Francji, przodującej przynajmniej w zakresie deklaracji programowych, ale zwłaszcza w centralistycznie reformowanej oświacie w monarchii habsburskiej. Jest ona także właściwa tak reprezentacyjnemu świadectwu ówczesnej kultury naukowej, jakim była Wielka Encyklopedia Francuska, do której KEN wprost nawiązywała. Szkoły KEN odchodzą od utożsamiania kształcenia realnego z kursem filozofii, co nasili się wraz z upowszechnianiem się empirystycznej epistemologii, owocującego fenomenalizmem rugującym podejście ufundowane na filozofii, w szkole tradycyjnej właściwe nowożytnemu arystotelizmowi chrześcijańskiemu. W szkole europejskiej wzbogacano studium językowo-humanistyczne o kształcenie matematyczno-przyrodnicze, zachowując kurs filozofii w duchu philosophia recentiorum, przynajmniej na poziomie uniwersyteckim. Filozofia ta krytycznie asymilowała elementy nowożytnej epistemologii, a zwłaszcza osiągnięcia nowożytnego przyrodoznawstwa. Postawa ta była charakterystyczna także dla szkoły zreformowanej w połowie wieku XVIII na teranie Rzeczypospolitej Obojga Narodów, zwłaszcza przez zakon pijarów i jezuitów. KEN wprowadziła natomiast samoistne przedmioty matematyczno-przyrodnicze, co zaowocowało ograniczeniem wykładu filozofii, którą w szkołach średnich sprowadzono do kursu logiki i ukierunkowanej praktycznie etyki, a na uniwersytetach do prawa naturalnego z odniesieniami społecznymi, politycznymi i ekonomicznymi. Zaowocowało to nawet odejściem od tradycyjnej struktury uniwersytetu, z propedeutycznym wydziałem filozoficznym, gdy w duchu fizjokratycznego porządku fizycznego i moralnego ukonstytuowano dwuczłonową strukturę szkół wyższych. Tym niemniej presja tzw. długiego trwania (longue durée) tłumaczy zachowanie elementów filozoficznych nawet w przyrodoznawstwie, dzielone z ówczesną szkołą europejską, a więc w formie interpretacji korzystającej z kategorii substancji i jej właściwości, a nawet koncepcji duszy zwierzęcej.
The paper depicts the didactic approach of the Commission of National Education (Pol. KEN). It shows curricula policy, textbooks, and didactic practice against the backdrop of reforms characteristic of the then European school. In presenting the reality of learned culture in education managed by the Commission attention is focused on the specific borderline between philosophy and modern science, the areas that many a time diverged from contemporary circumstances. Teaching in the KEN schools undoubtedly belongs to the policy of eclectic intellectual culture of the Enlightenment that seeks to reconciliate the traditional school with modern postulates. This attitude was manifested throughout European education, therefore not only in France, which was leading at least in her policy declarations, but especially in the Habsburg monarchy whose education was under centralistic reformation. It was also proper to the then learned culture of the Encyclopaedia, or a Systematic Dictionary of the Sciences, Arts, and Crafts, on which the KEN would directly draw. The KEN schools diverge from the identification real education with a course of philosophy, a fact became more prominent together with the popularisation of empiristic epistemology that resulted in phenomenalism; the latter eliminated the approach founded on philosophy in the traditional school, the approach proper to modern Christian Aristotelianism. The European school of linguistic and humanistic studies was enriched by mathematics and natural sciences, whereas a course in philosophy in the spirit of philosophia recentiorum was maintained, at least at the university level. This philosophy assimilated some elements of modern epistemology in a critical manner, especially the accomplishments of modern natural science. Such attitude was also characteristic of the school reformed in the mid-eighteenth century in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, especially by the Piarists and Jesuits. The KEN introduced independent mathematical and natural science subjects, a fact that resulted in limitation of the course of philosophy which in secondary education was reduced to a course in logic and practical ethics, and at universities to natural law with some social, political, and economic references. This resulted in departure from the traditional structure of university, with a propaedeutic faculty of philosophy, where a two-part structure of higher education was constituted in the spirit of physiocratic physical order and moral order. Nevertheless the pressure of the socalled long duration (longue durée) accounts for the maintenance of philosophical elements in Enlightenment school, even in natural science, in the form of interpretation that takes advantage of the category of substance and its properties, and even of the conception of animal soul.

Der Artikel verfolgt das Ziel, die allgemeine Charakteristik der Bedingungen darzustellen, unter denen die erste Rezeption der Philosophie von Kant (in den ersten Jahrzehnten des 19. Jahrhunderts) unter den Polen erfolgte. Oft entschieden die außermeritorischen Faktoren (institutionell, sozial und politisch) über die Richtung und den Charakter dieser Rezeption, sogar über ihre Einstellung oder ihren Bruch. Unter diesen Umständen kam es leicht zur Polarisation von Stellungnahmen gegenüber der Kantischen Philosophie, die einerseits auf grundlosen Vorurteilen, andererseits auf kritiklosem Enthusiasmus begründet waren. Zuerst (1) werde ich kurz die Gründe charakterisieren, warum die polnische Rezeption der Kantischen Philosophie im 19. Jahrhundert als Spannung zwischen „Aufklärung“ und „Scholastik“ beschrieben werden kann, wobei beide Termini nicht dasselbe bedeuten müssen, was die Philosophiehistoriker damit bezeichnen. Dann (2) werde ich kurz die Eigen-tümlichkeit der ersten Rezeption der Kantischen Philosophie und die Vertreter der gegensätzlichen Einstellungen (Szaniawski, Wigura, Śniadecki) vorstellen. Abschließend (3) skizziere ich mögliche Richtungen weiterer Forschungen über die erste Etappe der Rezeption der Philosophie von Kant in Polen und gebe Beispiele für neue Erkenntnisse an.Ins Deutsche übersetzt von Anna Pastuszka
The aim of this article is to outline general characteristics of the conditions of the first reception (in the early decades of the 19th century) of the philosophy of Kant in Poland. Its direction and nature as well as suspension or end often depended on nonsubstantive (i.e. institutional, social, and political) factors. Under these conditions, positions on the philosophy of Kant became easily polarized between the ones based on groundless prejudices on the one hand and uncritical enthusiasm on the other. First (1) I characterize briefly the reasons why the 19th-century Polish reception of the philosophy of Kant can be regarded as a tension between „enlightenment” and „scholasticism”(although those terms do not necessarily have to mean here what historians of philosophy refer to with their help). Then, (2) I provide a brief presentation of the specificity of the first reception of the philosophy of Kant and the representatives of the main opposing positions (Szaniawski, Wigura, Śniadecki). Finally (3) I outline some possible directions for further research into the first stage of the reception of the philosophy of Kant in Poland and present examples of new discoveries. Summarised by Tomasz Kupś
Celem artykułu jest naszkicowanie ogólnej charakterystyki warunków, w jakich dokonywała się wśród Polaków pierwsza recepcja filozofii Kanta (w pierwszych dziesięcioleciach XIX wieku). Często czynniki niemerytoryczne (instytucjonalne, społeczne i polityczne) decydowały o kierunku i charakterze tej recepcji, a nawet o jej wstrzymaniu lub załamaniu się. W tych warunkach łatwo dochodziło do polaryzacji stanowisk wobec filozofii Kantowskiej opartych, z jednej strony, na bezpodstawnych uprzedzeniach, z drugiej zaś, na bezkrytycznym entuzjazmie. Najpierw (1) scharakteryzuję krótko powody, dla których polska dziewiętnastowieczną recepcji filozofii Kanta można scharakteryzować jako napięcie między „Oświeceniem” i „scholastyką” (przy czym terminy te wcale nie muszą oznaczać tu tego, co historycy filozofii nazywają za ich pomocą). Następnie (2) w skrócie prezentuję specyfikę pierwszej recepcji filozofii Kanta oraz przedstawicieli głównych skrajnych stanowisk (Szaniawski, Wigura, Śniadecki). Na koniec (3) szkicuję możliwe kierunki dalszych badań nad pierwszym etapem recepcji filozofii Kanta w Polsce i podaję przykłady nowych odkryć.

Wśród haseł emancypacyjnych Oświecenia pojawił się między innymi postulat wyzwolenia energii gospodarczej, najpełniej wyrażony przez Adama Smitha w traktacie Badania nad naturą i przyczynami bogactwa narodów. Smith dokonał ostatecznego rozrachunku z panującym od początku XVI wieku systemem merkantylistycznym. Uzasadniając wyższość wolnego rynku nad modelami gospodarki sterowanej, stworzył intelektualne podwaliny ładu kapitalistycznego. Zaproponował model produkcji i dystrybucji dóbr oparty na dwóch filarach: prawie własności prywatnej oraz instytucji wolnego rynku. Obraz kapitalizmu szkicowany przez Smitha to system władzy i wolności — suwerennej władzy jednostek nad światem przedmiotowym oraz wolnego obiegu dóbr. Połączenie tych dwóch zasad dało w rezultacie spójny system, który, zastosowany w praktyce, wykazał się niezwykłą skutecznością. Dzieło Smitha okazało się patentem na doczesne powodzenie, który zadziałał wszędzie tam, gdzie go wypróbowano. Kapitalizm, wraz z towarzyszącą mu filozofią moralną, stał się najpowszechniej realizowaną ideą XVIII wieku.
Amongst the Enlightenment’s emancipatory slogans was a call for the liberation of economic energ y, a call that was most fully expressed by Adam Smith in Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations . Smith provided a final analysis of the mercantilist system that had been prevailing from the beginning of the sixteenth century. By justifying the superiority of the free market economy models, Smith created the intellectual foundations for the capitalist order. He proposed a model for the production and distribution of goods that was based on two pillars: the right to private property and free market institutions. The vision of capitalism created by Smith was a system of power and freedom: a system of individual sovereignty over the world of objects and a system of the free circulation of goods. The combination of these two principles resulted in a coherent system which, when used in practice, has shown remark- able efficiency. Smith’s work proved to be a reliable way to achieve worldly success, one that has worked wherever it was tried out. Capitalism, and the accompanying moral philosophy, was the most commonly pursued idea of the eighteenth century.
