Opis:
Adequate and concise representation of the shape of irregular objects from satellite imagery is a challenging problem in remote sensing. The conventional methods for cartographic shape representation are usually inaccurate and will provide only a rough shape description if the description process is to be fully automated. The method for automatic cartographic description of water basins presented in this paper is based on Self-Organizing Maps (SOM) - a class of neural networks with unsupervised learning. So-called structured SOM with local shape attributes such as scale and local connections of vertices are proposed for the description of object shape. The location of each vertex of piecewise linear generating curves that represent skeletons of the objects corresponds to the position of a particular SOM unit. The proposed method makes it possible to extract the object skeletons and to reconstruct the planar shapes of sparse objects based on the topological constraints of generating lines and the estimation of local scale. A context-dependent vertex connectivity test is proposed to enhance the skeletonization process. The test is based on the Markov random chain model of vertices belonging to the same generating line and the Bayesian decision-making principle. The experimental test results using Landsat-7 images demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed approach and its potential for fully automated mapping of hydrological objects.

Opis:
The challenge of POS tagging and lemmatization in morphologically rich languages is examined by comparing German and Latin. We start by defining an NLP evaluation roadmap to model the combination of tools and resources guiding our experiments. We focus on what a practitioner can expect when using state-of-the-art solutions. These solutions are then compared with old(er) methods and implementations for coarse-grained POS tagging, as well as fine-grained (morphological) POS tagging (e.g. case, number, mood). We examine to what degree recent advances in tagger development have improved accuracy – and at what cost, in terms of training and processing time. We also conduct in-domain vs. out-of-domain evaluation. Out-of-domain evaluation is particularly pertinent because the distribution of data to be tagged will typically differ from the distribution of data used to train the tagger. Pipeline tagging is then compared with a tagging approach that acknowledges dependencies between inflectional categories. Finally, we evaluate three lemmatization techniques.

Opis:
Consonant clusters appear either lexically within morphemes or morphonotactically across morpheme boundaries. According to extant theories, their diachronic dynamics are suggested to be determined by analogical effects on the one hand as well as by their morphological signaling function on the other hand. This paper presents a mathematical model which allows for an investigation of the interaction of these two forces and the resulting diachronic dynamics. The model is tested against synchronic and diachronic language data. It is shown that the evolutionary dynamics of the cluster inventory crucially depend on how the signaling function of morphonotactic clusters is compromised by the presence of lexical items containing their morpheme internal counterparts.

Opis:
In this paper we briefly review the mathematical models used to describe the bathymetry changes in time and space. Overview of the models was carried out with particular emphasis on the problems encountered during the nonlinear equation solution, commonly used to describe the morphology of the bottom in the coastal zone of the sea. In contrast to the commonly used approach, it is proposed a linear relationship between volumetric flow of sediments transport rate and thickness of the layer of sediment grains, closely adjacent to each other and staying in motion. This linear relationship allows to precisely define the initial - boundary conditions and to apply the numerical scheme of finite difference method of „upwind” at the accuracy of the first order, not distorted by numerical errors. The author’s method also allows to implement changes to the description of the bathymetry of simultaneous changes in the distributions of the sediment grain size.
