Opis:
The author reflects on a new interpretation framework in research on terminology. Referring to the philosophy of science and modern science studies, he distinguishes two types of doing science: traditional science and modern science. The centre of the linguistic cognitive space is located in traditional science. The naturalistic cognitive perspective determined also the shape of terminology studies. After philosophical ontology, the author adopts four ways in which a term can exist: in specifi c texts and in the system as well as in the individual and collective consciousness. This requires giving consideration to various perspectives (including the anti-naturalistic one) in terminological research and diverse cognitive methods, as well as a theoretical consolidation of the obtained results.

In the article the author reflects on the meaning of politics in a new- materialist framework. She concentrates predominantly on two political di- mentions – space and time. With reference to that, the author develops the concept of politics of squatting. Its spatial aspect is investigated along the lines of the notion of heterotopia, coined by Michel Foucault, and its temporal as- pect is analyzed through the concept of heterochrony (Foucault) and Darwini- an evolution as interpreted by Elizabeth Grosz. The concept of politics of squatting is then juxtaposed with nomadism (vide Rosi Braidotti). Finally, the author provides a case study by elaborating on the anti-gender campaign that began in 2012-2013 in Poland from the perspective of politics of squatting.

Opis:
The article provides a compact review of the early modern science views of the nature of science, scientific method and knowledge, rationality and objec- tivity with respect to masculinity and femininity. Following primarily Galileo and Bacon's work, the author is interested in pointing out the most important ideas of the historically fixed ways of how people imagined the acquisition of knowledge, presented nature, understood the role of researchers, as well as what metaphors they applied in defining knowledge. Due to the vast and di- verse material, the aim is not to sketch a complete and detailed portrait of the ideal of modern science, but to explore to what extent gender-related issues were of any significance here.

The argument of this paper is that the rationale, potential and limits of modern science are evident in Descartes, and in respect of its basic Cartesian features are still valid today. Its rationale is objectivity, its potential is a great improvement in human living conditions, and its limit is that, due to its striving for objectivity, modern science cannot in principle encompass human thought and action. Cartesian dualism is therefore well grounded, and can be elaborated on without any commitment to two autonomous types of substances.

In the current debate, we witness a conflict between the Christian concept of man vs. concepts that justify in vitro fertilization (IVF), genetic enhancement, or the reassignment of sexuality. Modern concepts cannot disregard the historic perspective of the consistent doctrines that the Catholic Church has maintained throughout her 2000-year history and which constitute the precursors of contemporary bioethics. Although she has adjusted specifics occasionally to address new developments, she has always based doctrine on immutable core principles. The current conflict lies neither in the novelty of the new proposals, nor in a conflict between religious and lay worldviews, but rather in concepts of man and human perfection. Some human traits may be regarded as disordered and incompatible with a particular concept of human perfection. The new proposals tend to involve physical changes based on technological manipulation, with a goal of developing a superior being, while Christian proposals do not seek to manipulate man’s being, but to develop his existing potential within criteria of acceptable reason. The new proposals rely on a Cartesian view which constitutes a human as his mind (cogito ergo sum), which has dominion over his body including authority to reengineer it according to any project that mind conceives. In contrast, the Christian concept views the human subject as a unity of mind and body, which may not be reshaped to meet a questionable goal of human perfection. The technological tools within the new concepts are in no way superior to the more personal attributes like virtues, perfection of the human will, prayer, and ascesis within the Christian concept.

After the publication of Sidereus Nuncius, in the controversy with Ch. One of them, named by Galileo a Practical Method, advocates very clearly the correctness of the hypothesis. In the paper the method in question is briefly described. It is argued that the Practical Method is not a thought experiment, but rather a mental model proposed precisely in order to solve the problem of sunspots’ location.

In the center of author’s attention there is the problem of forming a modern education system in the knowledge society. Education system should be considered in a context of a systematic method of approach, the essence of which is that relatively independent components are considered not separately, but in their interconnection, in the system with other components. In the center of the author’s attention there is a fundamental problem of the system interaction between modern science and education in the knowledge society. In the modern world, there is a radical difference between science and traditional forms of culture – scientific knowledge plays a significant role in solving technical, industrial, and organization management problems. The majority of people’s fields of activity in the society are becoming rationalized and coordinated. Science and higher education have the same social functions: the manufacture and transfer of knowledge. Knowledge becomes a basis for the organization of the people, a necessary condition of their joint activity. In the increasing degree, it acquires the significance of an integrating factor in social life, substituting traditional forms of people’s association.

The article discusses the positions in contemporary philosophy of science that recognize the problem of a cognitive status of modern science’s “products” as defining the core axis for an ongoing dispute over scientific realism. The author analyzes key arguments of scientific realists and antirealists. In the conclusion the author claims that as regards the cognitive status of scientific output in contemporary science, the most accurate answer has been provided by a position representing a synthesis of metaphysical realism, epistemological antirealism and semantical antirealism.

Johan Ernst Gunnerus, modern science in Norway, The Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences and Letters in Trondheim, Kristiansand, the University of Agder, the Agder Academy of Sciences and Letters
Opis:
The paper is written in connection with the 2018 300th anniversary of the birth of the professor and bishop, Johan Ernst Gunnerus (1718–1773), who founded modern science in Norway and who, in 1760, also founded the first learned society in the country: The Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences and Letters in Trondheim. In 1758 Professor Gunnerus was appoined the bishop for the whole of northern Norway, as the bishop of Trondheim. In 1771 Bishop Gunnerus was called to the capital of the then Danish-Norwegian kingdom, Copenhagen, with the mission of reforming the Copenhagen university, at that time the only university in the entire dual kingdom. In his recommendation for reforms of the university, he also included a proposal for the establishment of a university in Norway. In this proposal, he argued for the city of Kristiansand as the most suitable location for that university. If the King would follow his recommendation, he would himself move to Kristiansand and also bring with him the Royal Society from Trondheim. Many people have subsequently wondered why he chose to point to Kristiansand for the establishment of the first Norwegian university, and not Oslo (where the university was finally opened in 1813) or Trondheim (where he had founded the Royal Society 11 years earlier). It has been thought that Gunnerus suggested Kristiansand mainly because the fact that the city was close to Denmark and a university there could perhaps have also recruited students from northern Jutland. Some have even suggested that Gunnerus proposed Kristiansand because he knew it would not be acceptable to Copenhagen or to the King, and then Trondheim (his “real” wish) could then emerge as a more plausible candidate, even if it was situated rather far north. In this paper, I argue that until now everybody who has discussed Gunnerus' choice of location for a Norwegian university has missed one decisive point: before Gunnerus moved from Copenhagen (where he was professor) to Trondheim (as bishop), Kristiansand was known in Norway, Denmark and the rest of Europe as the Norwegian centre for science and research. This was due to just one man, Bishop Jens Christian Spidberg (1684–1762). I show how Spidberg established himself through international publications as the leading scientist in Norway, and how everybody with a scientific question during the first half of the 18th century looked to Kristiansand and Spidberg for the answer. This, I argue, gaveKristiansand an academic and scientific reputation that Gunnerus was very well aware of and could exploit in his recommendation of Kristiansand as the location for the first Norwegian university. However, this knowledge about this reputation of Kristiansand’s in the first half of the 18th century has since been lost completely, mostly because Gunnerus’ fundamental seminal contribution in the second half of the 18th century has completely overshadowed the academic situation in Norway before his time. Finally in 2007 a university, the University of Agder, was established in Kristiansand, on the basis of a university college with academic roots going back to 1828. An academy of science, the Agder Academy of Sciences and Letters, was founded in 2002. A formal agreement of cooperation between the Royal Society and the then university college was signed 2001, and the academy joined the agreement in 2005. This agreement confirmed the long academic ties between Kristiansand and Trondheim, going all the way back to the scientific positions first held by Spidberg in Kristiansand and then by Gunnerus in Trondheim.

The Pomeranian Library (Książnica Pomorska) holds a number of ancient surviving editions of the works by the Gdańsk-based astronomer Johannes Hevelius (Jan Heweliusz) (1611–1687). One of the works, the Machina coelestis, is composed of two volumes and was published in the years 1673 and 1679, respectively. This article examines the second part of the Machina coelestis in more detail. As early as the eighteenth century, the volume was already considered by bibliographers to be extremely rare. Today, it is considered to be even more unique. The reason for this is due to the tragic fire that broke out in September 1679 and destroyed Hevelius’ house, his observatory with instruments, and his studio and the printing shop, where almost the entire printed editions of the work stored there perished in the flames. The value of the copy held at the Książnica Pomorska is additionally enhanced by the fact that the book had belonged in the past to the private library of the renowned seventeenth century orientalist, Andreas Müller Greiffenhagius (1630–1694), who died in Szczecin and left his book collection there. The author of the article also managed to examine the surviving correspondence between Müller and Hevelius, in which both writers discuss this particular book. In this way, the history of this interesting copy is thus complemented by contemporary commentaries from the epoch.
