Opis:
As a green technology, laser ignition of a relatively insensitive secondary explosive has been experimentally investigated. The explosive, hexanitrostilbene (HNS), was doped with one of two optical sensitizers, carbon black or a laser absorbing dye, and a continuous-wave (CW) infrared diode laser was used as the igniting source. The ignition sensitivities of HNS with each of the two optical sensitizers were analysed and compared in terms of: optical power threshold for ignition, ignition delay and full burn delay at various laser powers. The results have shown that both the chemical dye and carbon black optically sensitize the explosive with similar efficiencies. In contrast to the carbon black, the dye provides wavelength specificity and selectivity in the laser ignition process and its solubility in some specific solvents improves the coating of the explosive material. It was therefore concluded that the laser absorbing dye is a better candidate for optical sensitization in laser ignition than the commonly used carbon black. The combination of laser ignition sensitivity with wavelength selectivity potentially offers higher reliability and safety at a low optical power for future ignitors of secondary explosives.

Opis:
Nanothermite composites containing metal oxide and metal fuel are attracting attention due to their outstanding combustion characteristics. The morphology of metal oxide is important for the performance of nanothermite composites. In this paper, branch-, plate-, sphere-, and hollow sphere-like CuO nano/microstructures were synthesized via a facile hydrothermal process. The CuO/Al based nanothermites were prepared via ultrasonic mixing of the asobtained CuO products and nano-Al. The combustion behaviour of CuO/Al based nanothermites was analyzed by DSC and laser ignition. This study shows that this nanoscale mixing resulted in a large interfacial contact area and low diffusional resistance between the fuel and the oxidizer, and the reaction reflects large energy and laser ignition sensitivity.

Opis:
The article proposes the concept of a new piston engine combustion system that is designed to meet future-oriented ecological requirements. The concept is to use ethanol as a fuel, in which a slurry of carbon nanotubes would be formed, which are characterized by the ability to ignite using a pulse of laser light fed into the combustion chamber. Modifying the shape of the light beam that penetrates the combustion chamber would allow to control the position and the size of the area in which the ignition of fuel would occur. The originality of the concept is to combine the latest achievements in the field of nanotechnology in the construction of lasers and the production of biofuels, so as to contribute to improving the environmental performance of engines using the existing synergies. The article discusses the prospects for the use of bioethanol as a fuel with zero carbon balance, a critical review of related research on light pulse initiated ignition of hydrocarbon fuels from carbon nanotubes was presented, and a review of studies of laser ignition for conventional fuels. The results of studies of carbon nanotubes suspensions in a variety of fuels conducted by the authors in order to seek solutions for the stable dispersions formation, that are resistant to nanotube agglomeration and sedimentation. The summary indicates directions for further research highlighting the importance of environmental impact.

Opis:
Near infrared laser ignition is challenging owing to the poor near infrared laser absorption of nitrocellulose-nitroglycerine-hexogen (NC-NG-RDX) propellants. Less than 1 wt.% of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were uniformly dispersed into the NC-NG-RDX propellants to tune its near infrared laser ignition property. The effects of CNTs on the thermal decomposition, near infrared light absorption and thermal conductivity of NC-NG-RDX propellants were studied. The near infrared laser ignition property of NC-NG-RDX propellants doped with CNTs were investigated compared with raw NC-NG-RDX propellant. The decomposition property and thermal conductivity of NC-NG-RDX propellants doped with CNTs were little changed due to the small quantity of CNTs. The laser reflectivity of the composite propellants decreased obviously as the content of CNTs was increased because of the high laser absorption property of CNTs. The laser ignition performance of the composites propellants is substantially improved by the incorporation of 0.5 wt.% or less CNTs and the successful ignition time decreases remarkably. Higher CNT content, such as 0.75 wt.% can lead to failure of laser ignition due to the excessive laser absorption efficiency and heating rate of the radiated region of the composite propellants together with inefficient deflagration. Our research reveals that the appropriate proportion of CNTs can potentially be used as a laser sensitizer for realizing effective infrared laser ignition of NC-NG-RDX propellants.

Historia i rozwój materiałów wybuchowych sięgają około dwóch tysiącleci wstecz. Począwszy od prochu czarnego, poprzez nitrozwiązki i nitroestry, aktualne kierunki rozwoju dotyczą m.in. badań nad koordynacyjnymi związkami metali przejściowych, zwanych potocznie solami złożonymi. Prace te doprowadziły do otrzymania szeregu nowych struktur mających cechy materiałów wybuchowych, zarówno kruszących, inicjujących jak i miotających.
The history and evolution of explosives reach about two millennia backwards. Starting form the black powder, thought nitro-compounds and nitro-esthers, current directions of researches concern coordination transition metal compounds, called compounded salt. This researches leads to a number of new chemical structures which posses explosive parameters, just like blasting or primary explosives and propellants.

This paper presents the results of experiments conducted within the Work Package 10 (fusion experimental programme) of the HiPER project. The aim of these experiments was to study the physics relevant for advanced ignition schemes for inertial confinement fusion, i.e. the fast ignition and the shock ignition. Such schemes allow to achieve a higher fusion gain compared to the indirect drive approach adopted in the National Ignition Facility in United States, which is important for the future inertial fusion energy reactors and for realising the inertial fusion with smaller facilities.

Opis:
When intense short-pulse laser beams (I > 1022 W/m2, τ < 20 ps) interact with high density plasmas, strong shock waves are launched. These shock waves may be generated by a range of processes, and the relative significance of the various mechanisms driving the formation of these shock waves is not well understood. It is challenging to obtain experimental data on shock waves near the focus of such intense laser–plasma interactions. The hydrodynamics of such interactions is, however, of great importance to fast ignition based inertial confinement fusion schemes as it places limits upon the time available for depositing energy in the compressed fuel, and thereby directly affects the laser requirements. In this manuscript we present the results of magnetohydrodynamic simulations showing the formation of shock waves under such conditions, driven by the j × B force and the thermal pressure gradient (where j is the current density and B the magnetic field strength). The time it takes for shock waves to form is evaluated over a wide range of material and current densities. It is shown that the formation of intense relativistic electron current driven shock waves and other related hydrodynamic phenomena may be expected over time scales of relevance to intense laser–plasma experiments and the fast ignition approach to inertial confi nement fusion. A newly emerging technique for studying such interactions is also discussed. This approach is based upon Doppler spectroscopy and offers promise for investigating early time shock wave hydrodynamics launched by intense laser pulses.

Opis:
This paper deals with the problem of fast electron propagation in plasmas, in the context of the fast ignition (FI) approach to inertial confinement fusion (ICF). In FI, a short-pulse high-intensity laser beam should generate a beam of relativistic electrons, which propagate into the compressed pellet, depositing energy and igniting the fuel. The study of electron propagation in dense matter is hence essential to the success of this scheme. The propagation of relativistic electrons in dense matter is determined by collisions of fast electrons with ions and electrons in the material, which can be described in terms of stopping power, but it also depends on self-generated magnetic and electric fields, which play a major, or even dominant role. In this paper we will show the importance of such collective effects by discussing several experimental examples.

The particles at the exhaust of two Port Fuel Injection Spark Ignition (PFI-SI) engines were characterised in terms of number size distribution and chemical properties. Optical techniques based on the Laser Induced Incandescence (LII) and on the Broadband Ultraviolet - Visible Extinction and Scattering Spectroscopy (BUVESS) were applied. The optical results were compared with those obtained by Electrical Low Pressure Impactor (ELPI). The aim of the work was the characterisation of the nanoparticles emitted by Port Fuel Injection Spark Ignition (PFI - SI) engines in terms of number size distribution and chemical-physical properties. Two PFI - SI engines were used for the experiments: a four-cylinder engine and a research optically accessible single cylinder engine. The experiments were performed at the exhaust of a multi-cylinder SI engine equipped with a three way catalyst (TWC) and in the combustion chamber and at the exhaust of a single-cylinder optical engine. High number concentrations of nanoparticles (D less than 50 nm) were detected. The presence of carbonaceous particles at the exhausts was due to the ignition of the fuel film deposits on the intake valves and on the cylinder walls. This was demonstrated by the optical measurements performed in the combustion chamber of the research engine. Different engine operating conditions were considered.
