Tracheal injury caused by the introduction of tubes to restore lung ventilation. Identification of mechanical parameters is necessary in order to identify changes in the pathomechanism of tissue associated with abnormal remodeling. The results of mechanical tests allowed us to develop a mathematical model of the trachea in a multidirectional load conditions. This will allow prediction of excessive local disturbances of the fields of strain and stress in the trachea wall occurring during the insertion of the tracheal tube, which so far have not yet been thoroughly investigated.

Opis:
With the aim to study disc degeneration and the risk of injury during occupational activities, a new finite element (FE) model of the L4-L5-S1 segment of the human spine was developed based on the anthropometry of a typical Colombian worker. Beginning with medical images, the programs CATIA and SOLIDWORKS were used to generate and assemble the vertebrae and create the soft structures of the segment. The software ABAQUS was used to run the analyses, which included a detailed model calibration using the experimental step-wise reduction data for the L4-L5 component, while the L5-S1 segment was calibrated in the intact condition. The range of motion curves, the intradiscal pressure and the lateral bulging under pure moments were considered for the calibration. As opposed to other FE models that include the L5-S1 disc, the model developed in this study considered the regional variations and anisotropy of the annulus as well as a realistic description of the nucleus geometry, which allowed an improved representation of experimental data during the validation process. Hence, the model can be used to analyze the stress and strain distributions in the L4-L5 and L5-S1 discs of workers performing activities such as lifting and carrying tasks.

Purpose: This study thoroughly examined the application of inverse FE modelling and indentation tensile tests to identify nanotubes' rubber material properties. indentation tensile tests to identify nanotubes' rubber material properties. Design/methodology/approach: Carbon nanotubes with various percentages of multi-walled carbon nanotubes exposed to high tensile stress were used to enhance the mechanical qualities of N.R. rubber. Findings: In this work, carbon nanotubes have been added to natural rubber. By using a solvent casting technique, toluene was used to make nanocomposites. 0.2%, 0.4%, 0.6%, 0.8%, and 1%. In this article, rubber and multi-walled carbon nanotubes interact in practical ways. Mechanical features of carbon nanotubes in NR have been researched. The results will lead to rubber products with improved mechanical qualities compared to present nanocomposite rubber containing various percentages of multi-walled carbon nanotubes exposed to large tensile test loading. The relative fitness error for significant stresses is reasonable with a second or third-order deformation model in numerical results. Research limitations/implications: Non-linear finite element analysis is widely used to optimise complicated elastomeric components' design and reliability studies. However, accurate numerical results cannot be achieved without using rubber or rubber nanocomposite materials with reliable strain energy functions. Practical implications: The indentation tensile tests of rubber samples have been simulated and confirmed using a parametric FE model. An inverse materials parameter identification algorithm was used to calculate the hyperelastic material properties of rubber samples evaluated in uniaxial tensile. Using ABAQUS FE software, material parameters and force-displacement data may be automatically updated and extracted. Originality/value: The numerical data for the inverse method of material property prediction has been successfully established by developing simulation spaces for various material characteristics. The force-displacement curve can be represented using technical methods. The results demonstrate that the inverse FE modelling process might be simplified by using these curve fitting parameters and plot equations to build a mathematical link between curve coefficients and material properties. The first, second, and third-order deformation models were tested using FE simulations for the tensile test.

In this study, we investigate the mechanical behavior of each skin layer, in terms of the nominal stress-strain curve by uniaxial tensile tests using specimens of porcine skin in two forms: dermis containing epidermis, and all three layers. All tests were performed under cyclic loading at the constant strain rate of 10-3 s-1 at ambient temperature. To measure the precise initial crosssectional areas of each layer, the thickness of each skin layer was quantified by counting the number of pixels on the photo-image using image-processing software. In the tensile test, force-strain curves of the total skin and dermis with epidermis were obtained. Subsequently, a rule of mixtures was applied to determine the nonlinear mechanical properties of the hypodermis layer. In conclusion, we could define the uniaxial tensile behavior of the hypodermis, and additionally predict the weight effect of the dermis and hypodermis layers in the tensile test.

Uniaxial tensile tests were performed on porcine skin to investigate the tensile stress-strain constitutive characteristic at qua-sistatic deformations using uniaxial tensile tests. Experimental results were then used to determine the parameters of the various constitutive model types for rubber, including the Mooney-Rivlin, Yeoh, Ogden, and others. The Prony series viscoelastic model was also calibrated based on the stress relaxation test. To investigate the calibrated constitutive equations (visco-hyperelastic), the falling impact test was conducted. From the viewpoint of the maximum impact load, the error was approximately 15.87%. Overall, the Ogden model predicted the experimental measurements most reasonably. The calibrated constitutive model is expected to be of practical use in describing the mechanical properties of porcine skin.

Opis:
Purpose: The aim of this study is to propose a method to construct corneal biomechanical model which is the foundation for simulation of corneal microsurgery. Methods: Corneal material has two significant characteristics: hyperelastic and viscoelastic. Firstly, Mooney–Rivlin hyperelastic model of cornea obtained based on stored-energy function can be simplified as a linear equation with two unknown parameters. Then, modified Maxwell viscoelastic model of the cornea, whose analytical form is consistent with the generalized Prony-series model, is proposed from the perspective of material mechanics. Results: Parameters of the model are determined by the uniaxial tensile tests and the stress-relaxation tests. Corneal material properties are simulated to verify the hyper-viscoelastic model and measure the effectiveness of the model in the finite element simulation. On this basis, an in vivo model of the corneal is built. And the simulation of extrusion in vivo cornea shows that the force is roughly nonlinearly increasing with displacement, and it is consistent with the results obtained by extrusion experiment of in vivo cornea. Conlusions: This paper derives a corneal hyper-viscoelastic model to describe the material properties more accurately, and explains the mathematical method for determination of the model parameters. The model is an effective biomechanical model, which can be directly used for simulation of trephine and suture in keratoplasty. Although the corneal hyper-viscoelastic model is taken as the object of study, the method has certain adaptability in biomechanical research of ophthalmology.

Opis:
The mechanical properties of two rubber materials, RB-55 rubber and FM-32 foam rubber, were tested under quasistatic and dynamic compressive loadings with a universal testing machine and a nonmetallic split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB), respectively. The results show that the hyperelasticity dominates the mechanical characteristics of the both materials. And the strain rate dependencies can be observed over the wide strain rate range from 10-2 s-1 to order 103 s-1. But in the rather narrow bands of 10-2—100 s-1 and 2 • 103 —6 • 103 s-1, the strain rate effects are not significant. In order to numerically simulate rod-explosive loading tests where the two rubber materials were used as a combined buffer, the strain rate-independent hyperelastic behaviors at the strain rate of order 103 s-1 were characterized by Ogden constitutive models, incompressible for RB-55 rubber and compressible for FM-32 foam rubber, respectively. The numerical prediction of the structural responses agrees very well with the experimental results. This means the testing and modeling are successful.
W celu numerycznego symulowania testów obciążeniowych metodą wybuchających prętów (z ang. rod-explosive loading tests), gdzie oba materiały gumowe pełniły rolę buforów, zastosowano model konstytutywny Ogdena, przeznaczony do analizy materiałów hipersprężystych. Wyniki symulacji numerycznych wykazały dobrą zgodność z wynikami doświadczalnymi.

The aim of the study was an estimation of the possibility of using hyperelastic material models to fit experimental data obtained in the tensile test for the swine skin tissue. Methods: The uniaxial tensile tests of samples taken from the abdomen and back of a pig was carried out. The mechanical properties of the skin such as the mean Young’s modulus, the mean maximum stress and the mean maximum elongation were calculated. The experimental data have been used to identify the parameters in specific strain-energy functions given in seven constitutive models of hyperelastic materials: neo-Hookean, Mooney–Rivlin, Ogden, Yeoh, Martins, Humphrey and Veronda–Westmann. An analysis of errors in fitting of theoretical and experimental data was done. Results: Comparison of load –displacement curves for the back and abdomen regions of skin taken showed a different scope of both the mean maximum loading forces and the mean maximum elongation. Samples which have been prepared from the abdominal area had lower values of the mean maximum load compared to samples from the spine area. The reverse trend was observed during the analysis of the values of elongation. An analysis of the accuracy of model fitting to the experimental data showed that, the least accurate were the model of neo- -Hookean, model of Mooney–Rivlin for the abdominal region and model of Veronda–Westmann for the spine region. Conclusions: An analysis of seven hyperelastic material models showed good correlations between the experimental and the theoretical data for five models.

Purpose: This paper includes results of the first stage of research aimed at the development of recommendations for physicians in order to help them to choose a particular type of cerebral arteries aneurysms treatment. Methods: Recent studies show that the majority of aneurysms develop as a result of hemodynamic and degenerative lesions of the vascular wall. Obviously, such wall damage can be studied using the methods of continuum mechanics and numerical simulations. Biomechanical modelling allows us to study hemodynamic parameters and stress-strain state of these arteries in health and disease, and to formulate practical recommendations for the necessity and reasonable selection of a particular type of cerebral arteries aneurysm treatment. Results: At this stage the realistic geometric models of arterial circle of Willis were built for its normal state and in the presence of aneurysms. The ultrasound analysis of circle of Willis was conducted in order to obtain blood flow parameters and the boundary conditions for carotid and vertebral arteries. Also, the mechanical properties of these arteries were investigated and constants of the Mooney–Rivlin strain energy function were obtained. Conclusions: Thus, the boundary problem describing the behaviour of human Willis circle arteries was stated. Further, this problem will be solved numerically using the finite element method. The numerical results will be analyzed from the point of view of the influence of the mechanical factors on the emergence, growth and rupture of circle of Willis aneurysms.
