    The paper analyses the problem of ethnicity with respect to globalising processes ongoing in contemporary societies. The author puts forward a thesis that there is an influence of global interculturalism that transcends national ties and crossing over cultural borders. The course of these phenomena is analysed within the context of the circumstances of the Australian state. A particular stress is laid on the issue of building a multicultural nation by the multiethnic society of Australia. This multicultural nation is a new value. At the same time the paper depicts achievements and failures in the multicultural policy assumed and carried out in this country.

    Opis:
    This paper seeks to resolve the problem of redefining cultural boundaries. Therefore, the following questions are addressed: 1) To what do cultural boundaries refer, and of what do they basically consist? 2) On what conditions and to what extent is the metaphor of cultural boundaries appropriate? 3) On what conditions can cultural boundaries be broken or crossed? These questions are examined based on a philosophical analysis that draws from Dave Elder-Vass’s The Reality of Social Construction (2012) and Alasdair MacIntyre’s Whose Justice? Which Rationality? (2003). As a major result, it is shown that the metaphor of boundaries is an appropriate tool for cultural studies, insofar as it helps to explain why different norms are followed in different cultures, and how cultural conflicts are related to breaking of norms endorsed and enforced by different social groups. The metaphor of boundaries fits this task, because with the help of it different cultures and social groups can be structured and represented as distinct collective entities, yet with blurred and changing borders, that can side, collide, and overlap with each other.

    The paper deals with the problem of the limits of the television created worlds which determine cultural identities of blurred cultural and medial borderlines. The concept of a border in cultural-and-medial space is seen in this paper as a communicational, negotiable game. What I offer here is a review of the ways television viewers can be able to trespass the television-set limits, how they can create virtual communities and cultural identities. My perspective is basically Polish, based on analyses of Polish communication practices.

    Referendum w Zjednoczonym Królestwie zorganizowane 23 czerwca 2016 roku, a następnie brexit formalnie przeprowadzony na początku 2020 roku i sfinalizowany po upłynięciu okresu przejściowego z początkiem 2021 roku wpływają znacząco na status granicy na wyspie Irlandia. Po opuszczeniu przez Zjednoczone Królestwo Unii Europejskiej granica oddzielająca Republikę Irlandii od Irlandii Północnej stała się także granicą Unii Europejskiej. Nawet jeśli z dnia na dzień  życie mieszkańców Irlandii korzystających z przejść granicznych nie zmieniło się diametralnie, to powolne, dalekosiężne zmiany zachodzą w samej świadomości Irlandczyków i Brytyjczyków, a także w uwarunkowaniach ekonomicznych i perspektywach społeczno-politycznych po obu stronach nowej/starej granicy. Spojrzenie na jej historię oraz kontekst kulturowy i geopolityczny, jaki proponuje niniejszy esej, opiera się na badaniach z obszaru border studies. Poszerzenie eseju o wybrane aspekty badań nad pamięcią kulturową pozwala na ukazanie interesów i aspiracji mieszkańców terenów przygranicznych, którzy oparcie znajdują we własnej tradycji kulturowej i dyskursach literackich. Celem tego artykułu jest ukazanie wielowymiarowości takiego pojęcia jak granica w okolicznościach zdefiniowanych przez wyniki brytyjskiego referendum z 2016 roku. Optyka i retoryka mocarstwowa, tak chętnie stosowania przez rządzących Zjednoczonym Królestwem konserwatystów, na czele z Borisem Johnsonem, nie uwzględnia wymiaru lokalnego, regionalnego i mniejszościowego. W przypadku najbardziej poszkodowanych mieszkańców Irlandii Północnej (obok Szkocji) status niepogodzonej z opuszczeniem Unii Europejskiej mniejszości paradoksalnie przysługuje 56% głosujących w referendum dorosłych obywateli tego regionu. 
    The 2016 referendum in the UK and then Brexit itself, formally introduced in 2020 and finalized – upon the conclusion of the transition period – at the beginning of 2021, have significantly affected the status of the border on the island of Ireland. Once the UK left the European Union, the border that separates the Republic of Ireland from Northern Ireland became an EU border as well. Although overnight the lives of the Irish people crossing the border did not change that much, gradual, and far-reaching, transformations have been taking place in the minds of the Irish and the British and in the overall economic, social and political circumstances on both sides of the old/new border. This essay seeks to address the Irish border’s history as well as its cultural and geopolitical contexts, based on the most useful insights of border studies. That perspective is enriched by elements of cultural memory studies to develop a position sensitive to the needs and aspirations of the border communities and individual borderlanders, who look for support and inspiration to their own local cultures and literary discourses. The aim of this essay is to explore various facets of the Irish border in light of the 2016 referendum’s results and ramifications. What is characteristic of the Tory neoimperialist vision and rhetoric in the UK is its disregard for the local, minority and regional issues on the island of Ireland. In consequence, the status of the 56 per cent of the inhabitants of Northern Ireland who voted “Remain” in the 2016 referendum may be described as that of a marginalized minority in their own country.

    This article results from a research project recently started at the Institute of Saxon History and Cultural Anthropology (Dresden) which aims to analyse “contact zones” in the Polish-Czech-German Border Region. It gives an insight into the work programme, discusses the methodological approach and presents some interim results. The time frame for the cultural-anthropological research project is set with reference to historical developments in these borderlands since World War II. The core questions of the project are how representations and functions of commemorative culture are performed and how the past and the present are negotiated in the border regions: How do people cope with their own past and the official representation of history? Which consequences are still visible today, after Germany, the Czech Republic, and Poland became EU-members? What kind of new impulses have been derived from those mostly young residents who have chosen the border regions as their home today? How does transnational cooperation work in this context? The thesis is that there are many cross-border activities as well as many obstacles that hinder cooperation.
    Niniejszy artykuł jest jednym z efektów realizacji projektu badawczego niedawno rozpoczętego w Instytucie Historii Saksonii i Antropologii Kulturowej (Drezno), którego celem jest przeanalizowanie "stref kontaktu" w polsko-czesko-niemieckim regionie przygranicznym. Tekst zarysowuje plan pracy, omawia podejście metodologiczne i przedstawia wstępne rezultaty badań. Ramy czasowe tego kulturowo-antropologicznego projektu badawczego zostały dopasowane do kontekstu wydarzeń historycznych zachodzących na tych pograniczach po II wojnie światowej. Podstawowe pytania stawiane w ramach tego projektu badawczego dotyczą: sposobów realizowania reprezentacji i funkcji kultury pamiątkowej, ustalania relacji między przeszłością i teraźniejszością w regionach przygranicznych oraz tego jak ludzie radzą sobie z własnym doświadczeniem przeszłości i tym, co jest historią oficjalnie prezentowaną. Chcemy ustalić jakie konsekwencje przeszłości są nadal widoczne współcześnie, kiedy Niemcy, Czechy i Polska stały się członkami UE? Interesuje nas jakie argumenty przemawiają na rzecz wybrania tego terytorium jako miejsca swojego zamieszkania w przypadku młodych mieszkańców oraz to jak funkcjonuje współpraca ponadnarodowa w tym kontekście? Zakładamy, że istnieje wiele działań transgranicznych, ale również wiele przeszkód, które utrudniają współpracę.

    This article examines the issue of crossing cultural and linguistic boundaries in the novels of the two Austrian writers who come from the borderland. On the example of fate of a woman, the autobiographical novel Engel des Vergessens by Maja Haderlap presents historical and social conditions determining the memory of the Slovenian minority in Austria, confronted with the official cultural memory of German-speaking Austrians. On the other hand, the case of Emma in Sabine Gruber’s Stillbach oder die Sehnsucht is a close-up of the complex south-ern Tyrolean situation after the annexation of this region by Fascist Italy. The problem of transgression involves both the heroines of the novels and the authors to the same extent.
    Das Anliegen dieses Beitrags besteht darin, die Problematik der Überquerung kultureller und sprachlicher Grenzen in den Romanen zweier österreichischer Autorinnen, die aus Grenzgebieten stammen, zu untersuchen. Am Beispiel des Schicksals der weiblichen Figur in Maja Haderlaps autobiographischem Roman Engel des Vergessens werden die das Gedächtnis der slowenischen Minderheit in Österreich determinierenden historisch-gesellschaftli- chen Verhältnisse gezeigt, die dem offiziellen kulturellen Gedächtnis der deutschsprachigen Österreicher gegenübergestellt werden. Im Fall von Emma aus dem Roman Stillbach oder die Sehnsucht von Sabine Gruber wird hingegen die komplizierte Lage der Südtiroler nach der Annexion der Region durch das faschistische Italien näher betrachtet. Hieraus ist ersichtlich, dass das Problem der Transgression die Figuren wie auch die Autorinnen selbst in gleichem Maße betrifft.
    Celem artykułu jest zbadanie problematyki przekraczania granic kulturo-wych i językowych w powieściach dwóch pisarek austriackich pochodzących w terenów pogranicza. Na przykładzie losów postaci kobiecej w autobiograficznej powieści Engel des Vergessens Mai Haderlap przedstawione zostały uwarunkowania historyczno-społeczne determinujące pamięć mniejszości słoweńskiej w Austrii, skonfrontowaną z oficjalną pamięcią kulturową niemieckojęzycznych Austriaków. W powieści Sabine Gruber Stillbach oder die Sehnsucht przypadek Emmy prezentuje złożoność sytuacji południowych Tyrolczyków po aneksji regionu przez faszystowskie Włochy. Tekst udowadnia, że problem transgresji dotyczy w takim samym stopniu bohaterek utworów, jak i autorek tekstów.

    Publikacja prezentuje fragmenty 43 tekstów anglojęzycznych o różnym charakterze, które łączy to, że ich autorzy relacjonują obserwacje i doświadczenia związane z teatrami i życiem teatralnym na ziemiach dawnej Rzeczypospolitej Obojga Narodów okresu zaborów (1795–1918). Znalazły się tu zarówno klasyczne relacje z podróży, jak i autobiografie, reportaże, wspomnienia, prace o charakterze analitycznym czy problemowym. Teksty te powstawały przez ponad sto lat w zmieniającym się środowisku politycznym i społecznym. To – i zapatrywania polityczne piszących – wpływało oczywiście na sposób i perspektywę opisu. Zebrane tu wzmianki nie tworzą żadnego ciągu tematycznego czy czasowego i występują w różnym kontekście, niemniej przynoszą wiele interesujących informacji i spostrzeżeń. Począwszy od tych o Teatrze Narodowym kierowanym przez Wojciecha Bogusławskiego, o Franciszku Bohomolcu czy Adamie Kazimierzu Czartoryskim, po legendarną inscenizację Kordiana z 1899 w Krakowie i pierwsze tango w warszawskim Teatrze Nowości z 1915. Informacje na temat tańca dotyczą zarówno tańca scenicznego, jak i praktyk społecznych (balet, taniec na linie, mazur, tango).
    The publication consists of fragments of 43 English-language texts of varied character, which are linked by the fact that their authors report their observations and experiences relating to the theatres and theatre life in the territory of the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth during the post-partitioning period (1795–1918). They include classic travel accounts as well as autobiographies, reportages, memoirs, works of an analytical or problem-focused nature. These texts were written over more than a century in a changing political and social environment. This – and the political views of the authors – obviously influenced the manner and perspective of the writings. The references collected here do not form any thematic or temporal sequence, as they refer to different contexts; nevertheless they do provide a lot of interesting informations and insights. They range from those about the National Theatre headed by Wojciech Bogusławski, about Franciszek Bohomolec or Adam Kazimierz Czartoryski, to the legendary production of Kordian in 1899 in Cracow and the first tango at the Warsaw Novelty Theatre in 1915. Information on dance concerns both stage dance and social practices (ballet, dance on a tight rope, mazur, tango).

    W artykule przedstawiono i poddano analizie publikowane w polskiej prasie sprawozdania i relacje z występów gościnnych Heleny Modrzejewskiej w teatrze polskim w latach 1867–1903. Znaczną część materiałów badawczych stanowią prasowe reakcje na występy aktorki po 1879, już jako gwiazdy teatru amerykańskiego. Autorka charakteryzuje zakres tematyczny artykułów i recenzji, analizuje ich leksykę, uwydatnia dominujące oceny, a także różnice między zainteresowaniami recenzentów i czytelników z różnych miast. Uwzględnia również materiały informacyjne, współtworzące publiczny wizerunek Modrzejewskiej jako gwiazdy, oraz wybrane materiały reklamowe, w których wykorzystywano ten wizerunek. Komentuje ponadto artykuły w polskiej prasie relacjonujące zagraniczne sukcesy aktorki, wierszowane utwory przekazujące wrażenia z występów oraz ilustracje, którymi uzupełniano teksty. Podkreśla, że chociaż ta bardzo obfita recepcja stanowi jeden z ważnych elementów tworzących legendę Modrzejewskiej jako najwybitniejszej polskiej aktorki i doskonałej odtwórczyni ról szekspirowskich, to wiele tekstów można uznać za cenne źródło poznania ulotnej sztuki aktorskiej. Artykuł jest bogato ilustrowany i zawiera aneks z kompletnym spisem recenzji i artykułów poświęconych występom gościnnym Modrzejewskiej.
    This article presents and analyzes the reports and accounts published in the Polish press on Helena Modrzejewska's (Modjeska) guest performances in the Polish theater in the years 1867–1903. A significant part of the research materials are press reactions to the actress's appearances after 1879, already as a star of the American theater. The author characterizes the thematic range of the articles and reviews, analyzes their lexis, highlights the dominant assessments, as well as the differences between the focus of reviewers and readers from various cities. She also considers the news and brief sensational informations that contributed to the public image of Modjeska as a star, as well as selected publicity items that exploited this image. In addition, she comments on articles in the Polish press reporting on the actress's foreign successes, rhyming pieces conveying impressions of her performances, and the illustrations with which the texts were accompanied. She points out that although this extensive reception is crucial in creating Modjeska's legend and reputation as the most excellent Polish actress and Shakespearean performer, many of the analyzed texts provide valuable insights into the transient art of acting. The article is richly illustrated and supplemented with an appendix containing a comprehensive list of reviews and articles focused on Modrzejewska's guest appearances.
