Opis:
Gamma ray measurement is an important issue in nuclear technology, since it is widely used in industry, medicine, agriculture, education research, and some military applications. Gamma ray is also needed to build radiation protection, which is very useful for human health. When gamma radiation penetrates through shielding material, it generates two radiation components within or beyond the shield, namely: the uncollided and the collided photons. Therefore, the buildup factor is an important parameter for gamma ray measurement. Buildup factor is defined as the ratio of the total number of particles at a given point to the number of uncollided particles, at that same point. In this work, we evaluate the gamma-ray buildup factors for copper (Cu-29), as a function of energy, for 0.511, 0.662, 1.275 MeV, by using cesium and sodium radioactive sources. The results show that the value of energy buildup factor decreases with increasing gamma energy, and increases with increasing thickness. Moreover, it was found that at high energies (1.275 MeV), the absorption buildup factor is at minimum when the energy is at high level. The results also reveal that there is no contribution from the scattering photons to the value of buildup factor, in general, at low intensity levels, when the geometry structure is built well. While for bad geometry, the detector measures intensity, which is greater than that described by the main linear attenuation coefficient, because the scattered photons will be detected as well. All in all, in order to get rational results, a well geometry should be used for the future applications.

Opis:
Specific activity of natural radionuclides 226Ra, 232Th and 40K was measured by gamma spectrometry in samples of soil and bottom sediments of rivers on the territory of potassium salt deposit development in order to collect information on radionuclide distribution. According to the results of examinations, the range of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K activity values in soils and bottom sediments of the territory of influence was <2.17–19.7 Bq/kg, <2.5–20.5 Bq/kg, 123–500 Bq/kg. Migration of the studied radionuclides is limited to 2 km zone. The results obtained provide useful information on the levels of naturally occurring radionuclides in the zone of influence of mining objects and are of interest for a comparative evaluation of the impact of salt mining on the radiation environment of the territory.

Opis:
Recently the use of organic fertilizers is increased to raise the agricultural products and reclaim land for cultivation in the world. These fertilizers contain many natural radionuclides, such as Uranium series (U-238), Thorium series (Th-232), and Potassium (K-40). Organic fertilizers can be considered as one of the natural sources of radiation in the soil. The specific activities of natural radionuclides U-238, Th-232, and K-40 in organic fertilizers were measured using a gamma-ray spectrometer NaI(Tl) detector and Rad Eye-B20 portable detector. Results of NaI(Tl) detector showed that the mean value of activity concentrations of U-238, Th-232, and K-40 was 2.101 Bq/kg, 0.329 Bq/kg, and 95.791 Bq/kg, respectively, were less than the recommended limits. The mean value of radiometric parameters Raeq, Hin, Hex, Iγ, Iɑ, DƔ, and AEDE were also calculated (9.398 Bq/kg, 0.0355, 0.0249, 0.037, 0.0123, 4.959 nGy/h, 0.0065 mSv/y). But the maximum and minimum values of activity concentration were found in sample O.2 and O.4, respectively. The results of Rad Eye-B20 portable detector showed that the maximum (0.415 Bq/cm2, 0.17 µSv/h, and 1.055 Cps) and the minimum (0.255 Bq/cm2, 0.13 µSv/h, and 0.485 Cps) values of surface contamination, Dose Rate, and General Count Rate per second were respectively found in samples O.2 and O.4; all they were slightly higher than background measurements (0.21 Bq/cm2, 0.12 µSv/h, and 0.44 Cps). Measurements of NaI(Tl) detector were matched and confirmed by Rad Eye-B20 detector. All measurements of the radiological hazard to consumers were less than the recommended limits.

Opis:
In the present study, the activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th, 40K in some building and raw materials used in Croatia were measured by using a gamma-ray spectrometer with the HPGe detector. The average activity concentrations of the studied different building and raw materials ranged from 11.6 š 1.7 (concrete) to 251.2 š 25.7 Bqkg-1 (GBFS), 14.0 š 2.7 (concrete) to 54.4 š 8.3 (coal fly ash) and 147.2 š 19.0 (concrete) to 773.7 š 82.0 Bqkg-1 (tuff) for 226Ra, 232Th and 40K, respectively. Radium equivalent activity, activity concentration index, absorbed gamma dose rate indoor due to the external exposure and corresponding annual effective dose were determined to estimate the exposure risk arising due to the use of these building and raw materials.
