Opis:
The relationship between two sets of real variables defined for the same individuals can be evaluated by a few different correlation coefficients. For the functional data we have one important tool: canonical correlations. It is not immediately straightforward to extend other similar measures to the context of functional data analysis. In this work we show how to use the distance correlation coefficient for a multivariate functional case. The approaches discussed are illustrated with an application to some socio-economic data.

Opis:
The paper presents a novel approach to Canonical Correlation Analysis (CCA) applied to visible and thermal infrared spectrum facial images. In the typical CCA framework biometrical information is transformed from original feature space into the space of canonical variates, and further processing takes place in this space. Extracted features are maximally correlated in canonical variates space, making it possible to expose, investigate and model latent relationships between measured variables. In the paper the CCA is implemented along two directions (along rows and columns of pixel matrix of dimension M x N) using a cascade scheme. The first stage of transformation proceeds along rows of data matrices. Its results are reorganized by transposition. These reorganized matrices are inputs to the second processing stage, namely basic CCA procedure performed along the rows of reorganized matrices, resulting in fact in proceeding along the columns of input data matrix. The so called cascading 2DCCA method also solves the Small Sample Size problem, because instead of the images of size MxN pixels in fact we are using N images of size M x 1 pixels and M images of size 1 x N pixels. In the paper several numerical experiments performed on FERET and Equinox databases are presented.

Opis:
Dimension reduction is an important topic in data mining and machine learning. Especially dimension reduction combined with feature fusion is an effective preprocessing step when the data are described by multiple feature sets. Canonical Correlation Analysis (CCA) and Discriminative Canonical Correlation Analysis (DCCA) are feature fusion methods based on correlation. However, they are different in that DCCA is a supervised method utilizing class label information, while CCA is an unsupervised method. It has been shown that the classification performance of DCCA is superior to that of CCA due to the discriminative power using class label information. On the other hand, Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) is a supervised dimension reduction method and it is known as a special case of CCA. In this paper, we analyze the relationship between DCCA and LDA, showing that the projective directions by DCCA are equal to the ones obtained from LDA with respect to an orthogonal transformation. Using the relation with LDA, we propose a new method that can enhance the performance of DCCA. The experimental results show that the proposed method exhibits better classification performance than the original DCCA.

Canonical correlation analysis generalized eigenvalue problem reproducing kernel Hilbert space
Opis:
Classical canonical correlation analysis seeks the associations between two data sets, i.e. it searches for linear combinations of the original variables having maximal correlation. Our task is to maximize this correlation. This problem is equivalent to solving the generalized eigenvalue problem. The maximal correlation coefficient (being a solution of this problem) is the first canonical correlation coefficient. In this paper we construct nonlinear canonical correlation analysis in reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces. The new kernel generalized eigenvalue problem always has the solution equal to one, and this is a typical case of over-fitting. We present methods to solve this problem and compare the results obtained by classical and kernel canonical correlation analysis.

An indication of correlation between dependent variable and predictors is a crucial point in building statistical regression model. The test of Pearson correlation coefficient – with relatively good power – needs to fulfill the assumption about normal distribution. In other cases only non-parametric tests can be used. This article presents a possibility and advantages of permutation tests with the discussion about proposed test statistics. The power of proposed tests was estimated on the basis of Monte Carlo experiments. The investigations were carried out for real data – a sample of refinery process parameters, where the indication of changes in correlation, even for sample with small size is very important. It creates an opportunity to react to changes and update statistical models quickly and keep acceptable quality of prediction

The author studies the correlation between the chosen financial ratios. The 46 ratios are calculated for 219 companies listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange or on the alternative trading system New Connect. Each ratio is computed on the base of the annual financial statement for the year 2008 and 2009. As a result, it can be stated that many of the chosen financial ratios are correlated. There are 8 of them, which are not correlated with others. Moreover the ordering compliance of companies in the rankings is analysed, when rankings are created on the base of financial ratios with different level of correlation.

The application of sewage sludge as a fertilizer in podzols soil ambiguously affects the peculiarities of the accumulation of certain chemical elements in various organs of the Jerusalem artichoke plants. Experimental factors in the study were different doses of sewage sludge from sludge maps of wastewater treatment plants and its compost with cereal straw, included together with the compensatory dose of mineral fertilizers to the norm N90P90K90 in the Jerusalem artichoke plantation. Determination of the content of chemical elements in soil and plants was carried out by X-ray fluorescence analysis. According to the results of research, it was established that the change of mineral nutrition conditions of Jerusalem artichoke causes significant changes in the chemical composition of its tubers and vegetative mass. Studies have shown a clear positive effect of increasing doses of SS on increasing the content in tubers: K – to 7.9%, Ca – to 1.9, Fe – to 1.9, in green mass: O – to 31.8%, K – to 31.6, Ca – to 24.9, Mg – to 5.9, Mn – to 0.7, Fe – to 0.4 and K – to 34.5%. The coefficients of biological absorption for most chemical elements are more than 1, but for O, Al, Si, Fe, these figures were less than 1. Regression models of phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium content in the vegetative mass of Jerusalem artichoke indicate a high and moderate dependence of these indicators on their content in Jerusalem artichoke tubers and soil.

Air quality is closely related to people’s health and life. In addition to being directly affected by social activities and atmospheric emissions, the impacts of meteorological factors are also significant. Based on daily Air Quality Index (AQI) data and various meteorological parameters in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD), this paper summarized the spatiotemporal evolution characteristics of AQI over YRD, and quantitatively analyzed the contribution of different meteorological elements to air quality. We also evaluated different spatial interpolation methods to produce surface distribution of AQI, and noted that the Ordinary Kriging outperformed other methods. The spatial distribution of AQI in YRD showed seasonal and annual variations. However, the days with AQI over 100 (level ii) were mostly observed in winter. Generally, more severe air pollution was observed in the northern part of YRD than in the southern ones, for example the air quality of the Ningbo metropolitan area was the best, while in Hefei it was the worst. It was found that meteorological parameters have spatially varying effects on AQI. For instance, pressure has a significant positive effect on AQI, and others showed negative correlations. We also predicted AQI by exploiting different machine learning-based models. Through model comparison, it was found that the Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average Model – ARIMA (0,1,2) has higher prediction accuracy for AQI than Multiple Linear Regression (MLR). The findings of this research can be used in future forecasting of air pollution, and also in air pollution controlling programs.

Small sample properties of unrestricted and restricted canonical correlation estimators of cointegrating vectors for panel vector autoregressive process are considered when the cross-sectional dependencies occur in the process generating nonstationary panel data. It is shown that the unrestricted Box-Tiao estimator is slightly outperformed by the unrestricted Johansen estimator if the dynamic properties of the underlying process are correctly specified. The comparison of performance of the restricted canonical correlation estimator of cointegrating vectors for the panel VAR and for the classical VAR applied independently for each cross-section reveals that the latter performs better in small samples when the cross-sectional dependence is limited to the error terms correlations, even though it is inefficient in the limit, but it falls short in comparison to the former when there are cross-sectional dependencies in the short-run dynamics and/or in the long-run adjustments
