Opis:
The main subject of research involves the global freight market in the sector of container shipping, and in particular the mechanism for setting up freight rates. The aim of research is to identify and analyse the features and characteristics typical of this market, resulting from the character of market mechanism, as well as to indicate factors which determine market fluctuations and evaluate its impact for the carriers and shippers. Moreover, the causes and effects of fluctuations in effective demand and potential supply in the sector of freight market were identified in terms of their impact on freight rates. The analysis includes three main types of container markets, existing today on a global scale, and characterizes the strategies and modes of behaviour of global container operators undertaking activity on these markets. By applying the theory of mass random service and queueing theory to examine the container freight market mechanisms the method of freight rates short-term forecasting was presented which can be used as an instrument for taking decisions in the sector of global maritime logistics.

Globalization poses new challenges, while also providing development opportunities for strong and dynamic enterprises and new sectors which shape the world markets and economy and contribute to a more global approach to business activities. The business activities undertaken in each country depend on a number of factors, and these factors are often similar due to globalization, though their impacts appear to vary. In addition, changes in economies progress at different speeds, thus this article aims to determine how the impact of change in the global economy influences transformations in ownership in container shipping. The organization and operation of global container shipping is shaped by numerous external factors, i.e. economic, geographical, and political factors. The impact of these factors varies depending on the specific aspect of the container shipping industry being discussed. This paper was motivated by the need to determine the container fleet size and ownership structure in container shipping, and whether these are changing as the industry evolves. The stated aim of this research requires the use of statistical methods and a literature review to allow for a comparative study of the size and ownership relations in container shipping.

In the last two years, the global maritime trade, and in particular container throughput, has been growing, although more slowly than in the exceptional year 2010, after a rapid collapse in 2009. Container fleet has also been growing well, but financial results achieved by the majority of leading container carrier companies (TOP 20) are very bad. When in 2009 their losses amounted to several billions dollars, carriers explained that it was an exceptional year because of the economic crisis and unusual collapse of container throughput accompanied by increasing expenses (especially on fuel). However, looking at financial results for the four years period of 2008-2011, year 2010 appears to be exceptionally profitable and the sum of financial results for the entire period for fifteen carriers from the TOP 20 group is 5.5 billion dollars loss. Debt of carriers is already over 90 billion dollars. Many of them are actually on the verge of bankruptcy and the prospects are not the best.

By developing possible solutions for Saudi ports to limit the increase in damage to the marine ecosystem, the random system for estimating the waiting time of ships in Saudi ports has been developed as a model to guide the application of the multiple benefits to the beneficiaries such as ship owners, shipping companies and port authorities so that it is applied to create multiple economic and environmental savings. An imperative optimization model for solving container slot allocation problems for time-sensitive commodities under the dynamics of port congestion pricing. The proposed new pricing mechanism has proven to be effective when compared to a generic slot allocation model that does not take into account shipping time limits and port congestion, with results showing that the proposed pricing scheme can significantly improve ship companies' revenues and improve customer satiation. In terms of reducing carbon emissions from the ship's stay for a longer period at the docks.

Opis:
Recently, technological advancements, globalization, ongoing mergers and acquisitions, and intense competition have dominated the container shipping industry. This situation has led to the formation of major container shipping lines with similar technologies, offering the same service. In such an environment, a strategic competitive advantage is no longer entirely dependent on the basic features of the service provided and customer relationships, which is more difficult to replicate, has gained importance. Container shipping lines must develop customer-centric relationship marketing strategies that cover the whole organization and marketing activities to survive, and maintain their profitability, in the current competitive environment of the industry. However, these strategies and their implementation are not precisely defined in the container shipping industry. Therefore, this study explores the relationship marketing strategies that are practiced in the container shipping industry. Data is collected via 22 semi-structured interviews with container shipping partners (i.e. container shipping lines and freight forwarders). Loyalty programs and relationship pricing are the most often mentioned relationship marketing strategies that foster customer loyalty in these interviews.

The main research issue refers to the identification and analysis of the key features and trends revealed on the global maritime container transport market in the years 2020-2022, as well as its general assessment in terms of the effects that such a highly concentrated market's supply side can cause for shippers and container shipping operators. The research is aimed at determining the main premises and factors stimulating the consolidation processes of the container shipping operators and ongoing market vertical and horizontal integration, as well as assessing the risks and effects resulting from maintaining the current system of regulation of this oligopolistic market. While conducting this research, the following methods were applied: factor analysis (FA), market analysis (MA) based on statistical data concerning the supply side, as well as desk research (DR), i.e. in-depth analysis of many reports, opinions, bulletins and data issued by international maritime organisations as well as research institutes. The obtained research results indicate that:1. the very advanced consolidation processes among the leading container shipping operators and, consequently, further integration of the container market, radically changes the balance of power in favour of shipping operators and creates the potential to generate serious disruptions in this market and other links in the global supply chains, 2/ regulatory antitrust authorities need to take appropriate regulatory action to limit their market power via legal measures regarding competition.

The research addresses the problem of an ultra-large container ship mathematical model adjustment based on sea trials. In order to verify the model’s adequacy, simulated data had to be compared to the trial report data, which was obtained in ballast condition with significant trim. In such circumstances, model coefficients cannot be calculated by known methods and have to be corrected as per trial data. It is proposed to determine translational motion coefficients first. To get optimal results, it was also proposed to divide the objective function into kinematic and dynamic components, with each component being assigned a weighting factor. A separate objective function component was assigned to the zig-zag maneuver, which includes the first and second overshoot angles.

Along with changes in customer expectations, the process of ordering a house, especially one built with the most modern technology from prefabricated HQ 40-foot shipping containers, should take place in an atmosphere of free-flowing, customer-friendly conversation. Therefore, it is important that the company producing such a solution has a tool supporting such offers and orders when producing personalized solutions. This article provides an original approach to the automatic processing of orders based on an example of orders for residential shipping containers, natural language processing and so-called premises developed. Our solution overcomes the usage of records of the conversations between the customer and the retailer, in order to precisely predict the variant required for the house ordered, also when providing optimal house recommendations and when supporting manufacturers throughout product design and production. The newly proposed approach examines such recorded conversations in the sale of residential shipping containers and the rationale developed, and then offers the automatic placement of an order. Moreover, the practical significance of the solution, thus proposed, was emphasized thanks to verification by a real residential ship container manufacturing company in Poland.

Opis:
Unlike in other ship types, the container ships cannot offer their services without containers and the shipping space become ineffective. Therefore, containers and slots are complimentary and indispensable service component in liner container shipping. The virtual container yard (VCY) is a modern concept and an effective CIM solution that underpins the collaboration between carriers. Carriers already have common platforms to interchange slots thus it is just one fine step away from implementing the similar strategy for containers. It is, through these findings, expected to change the carriers’ myopic view about the container interchange. The actual container statistics in Sri Lanka was extracted from the industry as the source of input for the study. The paper reveals that the VCY could reduce the inventory management cost by 19 percent. Carriers opted to interchange the container slots in cellular ships more than three decades ago. This paved the way for strong collaboration between carriers and provided many financial advantages. It helped in securing economic advantages through scale of economies in highly completive shipping industry. This paper provides empirical evidences of the financial savings of container interchange under different container sizes and types.

During ship design, service speed is one of the crucial parameters in determining the operational economy of the vessel. As sufficiently exact calculation methods applicable to preliminary design stage are lacking, the so-called contract speed, the speed which a ship reaches in calm water, is usually cited. Żelazny (2015) developed a parametric method for calculating total ship resistance under actual weather conditions (wind, waves, sea current). This paper presents a parametric model of a ship’s propulsion system (screw propeller – propulsion engine) as well as a method, based on both the resistance and propulsion system models, of calculating the mean statistical value of a ship’s service speed under the seasonal weather conditions occurring on shipping lines. The method makes use only of basic design parameters, and may be applied in preliminary design phase of container ships.
