    The article presents a series of five cultural renaissances which took place in the Western World from the 3rd century BC to the 15th–16th centuries AD. One feature which all these renaissances had in common was a type of technological turn which either triggered or helped to spread renewed interest in literature. The end of the 20th century and especially the beginning of the 21st century has been witness to a major technological revolution. Some signs of literary and philological renewal can also be observed, especially in the field of classical studies. All this has led some scholars to believe that we are currently heading for the sixth Renaissance.

    Jerzy Starnawski asserted the existence of the so-called “third generation of modern histori- ans of literature or, more broadly, “modern Polish representatives of the humanities with substan- tial merit in various fields.” He added that he referred to the generation born in the last decades of the nineteenth century, who then attended higher schools in the early twentieth century and be- came professionally active in the interwar years. Starnawski’s argument did not rely on meticulous prosopographic analyses and, apart from that, it was almost exclusively concerned with the scholarly achievement of the individuals he mentioned. This paper aims to verify Starnawski’s opinion based on a case study, i.e. the biography of Stanisław Dedio, a little known figure in the annals of the Polish humanities. The author argues that if Dedio did belong to the aforementioned “third generation of the modern representatives of the humanities”, then an immanent trait of the generation – besides scientific achievement – was deeply patriotic social and political activism, which peaked in the diffi- cult period of building the Second Republic of Poland.

    Artykuł jest wynikiem krytycznej lektury opublikowanej niedawno książki Philology. The Forgotten Origins of the Modern Humanities. Jej autor, James Turner, amerykański historyk, przedstawia genezę i rozwój współczesnych nauk humanistycznych. Filologia, która przez kolejne stulecia uchodziła za królową humanistyki, utraciła swą uprzywilejowaną pozycję w momencie, gdy poszczególne gałęzie dziedziny podstawowej zaczęły wyodrębniać się w niezależne dyscypliny badawcze. Autor polemizuje z panującą powszechnie opinią, że ten kierunek rozwoju był nieuchronną konsekwencją nadmiaru informacji we współczesnej nauce. Argumentuje, że renesansowi humaniści, zmagając się z podobnym problemem, potrafi li rozwiązać go, stosując odpowiednie narzędzia i mnemotechnikę. Z tej perspektywy szczegółowa specjalizacja, charakterystyczna dla współczesnej humanistyki, zdaje się być niewygodnym filtrem, który ogranicza wiedzę zamiast ją porządkować.
    This article is an outcome of a critical reading of a recently published book Philology. The Forgotten Origins of the Modern Humanities. Its author, James Turner, an American historian, outlines the origins and history of modern humanities. He shows that for many centuries philology was regarded as the pillar of the multi-layered humanities but lost its privileged status when individual branches started to acquire an independent status as distinct scholarly disciplines. Turner contests the widespread view that “information overload” was directly responsible for this course of development in the area of modern humanities. He argues that Renaissance scholars faced similar problems but solved tchem differently by applying technologies that helped to manage the fl ood of information. Thus, hyperspecialization, characteristic for modern humanities, is merely a cramping fi lter, which constrains knowledge rather than organizes it.

    This article aims to explore the phenomenon of “classical crossover,” a contemporary music trend that blends “high” and “low” elements. In addition to analyzing the genre’s main features and cultural preconditions for its emergence, the article will examine its historical origins and development. The second part of the article focuses on examples of classical crossover in Russian and Ukrainian music, with an analysis of several artists who have ventured into this new type of production, including the Terem Quartet, Anna Netrebko, Olga Chubareva, and Arina Domski. By applying historical and cultural methodology, the article suggests that classical crossover has a broad audience in Russia and Ukraine, allowing musicians to introduce elite classical music to the masses. Although some may view the genre as a dilution of classical music’s distinctive qualities in order to cater to popular tastes, it also provides musicians with the opportunity to create original pieces that merge tradition with innovation. Considering all of the above, the author of this article aims to explore the cultural significance and impact of classical crossover in the music industry.
    Artykuł jest analizą zjawiska classical crossover obecnego we współczesnej muzyce, a polegającego na łączeniu elementów „wysokich” i „niskich”. Celem artykułu jest opisanie głównych cech tego gatunku i okoliczności kulturowych, które doprowadziły do jego powstania, a także zbadanie jego historycznej genezy i etapów rozwoju. Druga część artykułu skupia się na przykładach classical crossover w muzyce rosyjskiej i ukraińskiej. Analizie poddano twórczość wybranych rosyjskich i ukraińskich artystów, którzy reprezentują ten nurt, takich jak Terem Quartet, Anna Netrebko, Olga Chubareva i Arina Domski. Wykorzystujący metodologię historycznokulturową artykuł sugeruje, że classical crossover ma szeroką publiczność w Rosji i w Ukrainie, ponieważ oswaja ją skutecznie z elitarną muzyką klasyczną. Chociaż niektórzy dostrzegają w tym trendzie tendencję do rozmywania charakterystycznych cech muzyki klasycznej w celu zaspokojenia popularnych gustów, daje on również muzykom możliwość tworzenia oryginalnych utworów, które łączą tradycję z innowacją. Uwzględniając powyższe elementy, autorka stara się zbadać kulturowe znaczenie gatunku classical crossover i jego wpływ na przemysł muzyczny.

    Kolorystyczne możliwości gitary klasycznej są cechą, która fascynowała kompozytorów zarówno w minionych epokach (F. Sor, Method for the Spanish Guitar, Cocks & Co, London 1832, s. 16), jak i w XX i XXI wieku. Wzrost zainteresowania barwą dźwięku w ostatnim stuleciu realizowany jest także w solowej literaturze gitarowej. Przykładem tego jest między innymi cykl etiud na gitarę solo Sette studi Maurizia Pisatiego. Dzieło to obrazuje, w jaki sposób sonorystyczne traktowanie instrumentu przekłada się na uzyskiwanie nowych jakości ekspresyjnych i artystycznych. W artykule zdefiniowane zostanie pojęcie „sonorystyki”, zasygnalizowana zostanie rola cyklu w dorobku kompozytora oraz przedstawione zostaną różnice pomiędzy procesem interpretacji opisywanych etiud a innymi kompozycjami tego typu. Opisane zostaną wyzwania techniczne i artystyczne, z którymi mierzy się wykonawca na każdym etapie pracy nad utworem – zapoznawanie się ze skomplikowanym tekstem muzycznym i z bogatymi oznaczeniami wykonawczymi; odczytanie i realizacja zamysłu kompozytora; wyostrzenie ekspresji, która ułatwi wciągnięcie słuchacza w oryginalny świat brzmieniowy. W artykule zostaną również zaprezentowane przykłady kilku innych utworów, których opanowanie i interpretację ułatwić może doświadczenie zdobyte podczas pracy nad Sette studi
    The tone colour capabilities of the classical guitar have fascinated composers of earlier periods (F. Sor, Method for the Spanish Guitar, Cocks & Co, London 1832, p. 16) as well as those of the 20th and 21st centuries. The growing interest in timbre in the past century is also apparent in solo guitar music. An example of this is a collection of studies for guitar solo entitled Sette studi by Maurizio Pisati. This work illustrates how the sonoristic approach towards the instrument allows to achieve new expressive and artistic qualities. This article aims to define the concept of “sonoristics”, indicate the role of the cycle among the composer’s works, and present the differences between the interpretation of the described studies and other works of the same type. Furthermore, the author shall describe the technical and artistic challenges the performer is faced with at each stage of working on the piece: familiarizing oneself with a complex music score and abundant performance markings; understanding and performing the composer's intentions; sharpening the expression to help draw the listener into an original soundscape. The article will also present several examples of other works, the learning and interpretation of which can be facilitated by the experience gained while working on Sette studi.

    The article is placed in the scope of research of classical studies, drama and theatre studies, and cultural studies. It is an attempt of social interpretation of Aristophanes’ Assemblywomen. Utopia, matriarchy, cultural identity of sex or stereotypes of women and men are the main questions raised in the article. An utopian project of matriarchy created in the old-Greek comedy is a basic object of interpretation. The author employs propositions of interpretation submitted by Angus M. Bowie, Gwendolyn Compton-Engle, Jerzy Łanowski, Kenneth M. De Luca, Kenneth S. Rothwell. Assemblywomen shows that a big idea which could create wealth of society can be easily metamorphosed into its opposition. It should be said that Aristophanes’ theatre achievements supplement modern social and cross-cultural research and are important and attractive texts for demanding readers/spectators of any time.

    Im September 1976 begann die Tätigkeit des Verfassers als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter an den Nationalen Forschungs- und Gedenkstätten der klassischen deutschen Literatur in Weimar. Sie brachte Begegnungen mit ‚westlichen‘ Fachkolleginnen und Fachkollegen mit sich, und es entstanden Einzelkontakte, die sich als dauerhaft erwiesen. Auch Einladungen zu Symposions- und Vortragsreisen konnten schließlich wahrgenommen werden. Im nachfolgenden Text wird von alledem berichtet.
    Działalność autora artykułu, jako współpracownika Narodowego Centrum Badań i Pamięci niemieckiej literatury klasycznej w Weimarze, datuje się od września 1976 roku. Wynikiem tej działalności były spotkania z ‚zachodnimi‘ specjalistami z dziedziny literatury a także trwałe kontakty osobiste. Realne stały się wreszcie zaproszenia na sympozja oraz gościnne wykłady. Niniejszy tekst jest sprawozdaniem z wydarzeń tamtego okresu.
    September 1976 begun the author’s function as research assistent at Nationale Forschungs- und Gedenkstätten der klassischen deutschen Literatur in Weimar. Hereby he increasingly came into contact with ‚western‘ experts; as a consequence it came to individual contacts with colleagues which were proved to be lasting. Finally, he was even able to accept invitations to symposiums and lecture tours.
