Opis:
Inquiring Aristotelian conception of rhetoric as an art of persuasion, the author of the article aims in presenting rhetorical ethos and rhetoric itself in reference to practical disciplines, politics and ethics. Understanding rhetoric’s autonomy as a theoretical postulate this inquiries introduce a demand of functionality and axiological awareness: to treat art of rhetoric as an organon for the practical disciplines and to acquire attention of normative problems concerning particular features of rhetoric and rhetorical ethos. The article investigates Aristotle’s original conception of rhetoric and the troubled but essential connection between techne and praxis. Proposing a solution, the author initially puts forward a project of establishing a new normative conception of rhetorical ethos meeting the demands of contemporary praxis (especially in the field of education) on the basis of a concept of uprightness.

Opis:
The article addresses the issue of one of the parts of rhetoric – memory (memoria) in relation to fine arts (beaux-arts), a term invented by Charles Batteux. In the classical understanding of the rhetorical discourse, memoria is a set of rules allowing the speaker to remember his speech and then to deliver it in the best possible way. In terms of aesthetics and art, the mentioned term takes on many new meanings, to the extent that Diderot’s Encyclopedia does not use it at all. In order to explain the role of memory as a creative process, the French theoreticians of the Age of Enlightenment (Batteux, Dubos, Voltaire) use many other terms, which only shows the complexity of the term memoria. The aim of the article is to show the adaptation of the rhetorical term to the area of poetics and theory of art, and to present how this rhetorical concept becomes one of the foundations of the fine arts.

Wim Wenders’s report is devoted to the output of the world-renowned photographer Sebastião Salgado. The presentation of his works in the documentary employed the text within a text composition, or rather „photography within a documentary”. The director emphasised the photographs and the statements by the photographer in such a way that the viewers could learn about Salgado as the author of his works and as a human, a humanist concerned about the fate of contemporary human beings. The analysis and the interpretation of the report enabled me to reflect theoretically on the definition and the specificity of photography.

Opis:
The article is an attempt to analyse the rhetorical ways of constructing the scientific qualities of three publications in the field of marketing communication: Scientific Advertising from 1923 (author: Claude C. Hopkins), 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing from 1994 (authors: Al Ries and Jack Trout), and How Brands Grow from 2010 (author: Byron Sharp). Scientific qualities of the general approach and specific findings are built primarily on the basis of the concept of marketing laws: exact, universal and unchanging principles/patterns (as reconstructed in the chapter What are the laws of marketing?), derived from a wide range of data and appropriate methodological procedures (What should marketing be based on?), ensuring business effectiveness for market entities (What are the effects of relying on the laws of marketing?). Authors define their perspective in opposition to the lack of empirical grounding of marketing principles and false premises they are derived from (What shouldn’t marketing be?). The approaches presenting marketing as a science are thus opposed to the alternative approaches, which are describing marketing (and in particular: advertising and the process of its creation) as an art.

Opis:
Teresy odkrywane w nowych kontekstach historycznych, do czego zachęca m.in. Sobór Watykański II w swojej koncepcji aggiornamento polegającej na dostosowaniu Kościoła do przemian współczesnego świata.
St. Teresa of Ávila, a mystic, Doctor of the Church, an extraordinary woman of deed and contemplation, and a reformer of the Carmelite order, has exerted an enduring influence on subsequent generations for centuries, reflected not only in theological reflection but also significantly impacted the imagination of artists. The article presents works inspired by the figure of St. Teresa from various fields of art: painting, sculpture, film, photography, and music. A particular focus is placed on the discussion of one of the occasional motets by M.-A. Charpentier: Pour Sainte Thérèse. The conducted analyses provide evidence that, through artistic creation, we are given the opportunity to contemplate the legacy of St. Teresa in new historical contexts, encouraged, among other sources, by the Second Vatican Council in its principle of aggiornamento, aimed at adapting the Church to the transformations of the modern world.

Opis:
Members of the Society of Jesus, as didacticians (and humanists), were aware of the importance of the memoria for the delivery of speech. For this reason, they did not omit this opus oratoris in rhetorical studies intended for their students. An example of this is the textbook De arte rhetorica libri tres ex Aristotele, Cicerone, et Quintiliano praecipue deprompti by the Portuguese Jesuit Cipriano de Soarez (1524–1593). The aim of the research was to trace the influence of Rhetorica ad Herennium, De oratore by Marcus Tulius Cicero and Institutio oratoria by Marcus Fabius Quintilian on the rhetorical theory presented by Soarez concerning ars memorativa. An attempt was also made to determine what the teaching of rhetoric looked like in Jesuit colleges, which was helped by the Ratio studiorum treatise (1599). In the course of comparative analysis, it was found that the Portuguese teacher mainly drew on Marcus Fabius Quintilian’s Institutio oratoria.

Opis:
Screenplay is a multifunctional project written by screenwriter or screenwriters for preparing next phases of film production. Changing and many times transformed forms of screenplay belong to the nature of screenwriting. Literary vision of film changes several times being result of synergy and typical work in progress: from general idea and high concept, through story, treatment, scalette, first draft and certain number of drafts, to final draft, director’s draft and shooting script. Marek Hendrykowski’s study describes and explains these terms as forms of literary film creation in three complementary aspects: creative re-vision, rewriting and remodeling.

Opis:
This article argues that, strictly speaking, from its inception with the ancient Greeks and for all time, philosophy and science are identical and consist in an essential relationship between a specific type of understanding of the human person as possessed of an intellectual soul capable of being habituated and a psychologically-independent composite whole, or organization. It maintains, further, that absence of either one of the extremes of this essential relationship cannot be philosophy/science and, if mistaken for such and applied to the workings of cultural institutions, will generate anarchy within human culture and make leadership excellence impossible to achieve. Finally, it argues that only a return to this “common sense” understanding of philosophy can generate the leadership excellence that can save the West from its current state of cultural and civilizational anarchy.

Opis:
Since most pressing today on a global scale is to be able to unite religion, philosophy, and science into parts of a coherent civilizational whole, and since the ability to unite a multitude into parts of a coherent whole essentially requires understanding the natures of the things and the way they can or cannot be essentially related, this paper chiefly considers precisely why the modern world has been unable to effect this union. In so doing, it argues that the chief cause of this inability to unite these cultural natures has been because the contemporary world, and the West especially, has lost its understanding of philosophy and science and has intentionally divorced from essential connection to wisdom. Finally, it proposes a common sense way properly to understand these natures, reunite them to wisdom, and revive Western and global civilization.
