The liturgy of the Church is an expression of his life with Christ, it uses natural signs such as: wine, water, light, fire, smoke, oil, salt, and ash. It is through Christ, that they are given new meaning. This meaning is to glorify God and sanctify man. The sacramental ordinances are determined by ecclesiastical law which follows the nature and life of the Church. The ordinances of the Church, through the visible, direct us to the invisible. Behind what is visible there is no action or God's grace. These signs of God's presence are symbols, which St. Augustine calls the encounter between God and man in the world of signs and symbols, a Sacrament. The sacraments of the Church are graces given by God to man for his sanctification. In sacramental rites, the Church can change form, but never in essence and matter. The matter of the sacrament of marriage is between a woman and a man. The rites of the sacrament of marriage, were announced in 1969, are used in Poland, however, it has been adapted to the new Code of Canon Law of 1983. Jesus instituted the sacrament of marriage. Marriage should be celebrated at Holy Mass and is characterized by unity and indissolubility. During the rites of the sacrament of marriage, the Church then asks what is the will of the person is for getting married. The couple then join their right hands and place the wedding rings on each other’s ring finger. The effects of the sacrament of marriage, which express the Rites of the Sacrament of Marriage, are: marriage community, grace and family. The liturgy with the sacrament of marriage speaks of the sanctity of marriage through the beauty of its celebration.

The sacrament of penance and reconciliation constitutes an integral part of the Christian life. It restores the state of sanctifying grace lost by man as a result of mortal sin. Confession also plays a major role in the preparation of prospective spouses for being joined in the sacrament of matrimony. No mandatory duty is imposed at this point by the legislation yet the sacrament of penance is strongly recommended before the holy matrimony takes place in order to render it more fruitful. The priest preparing the prospective spouses for the holy matrimony is obliged to raise the question of premarital confession and be of help should the need arise.The confessor of the prospective spouses should be characterised by appropriate spiritual and intellectual formation. He should demonstrate particular tactfulness and thoughtfulness when asking questions, especially those concerning premarital sex. The minister’s teaching ought to result in providing positive guidelines for the future married life.The prospective spouses are supposed to fulfill all the acts of the penitent: repentance, disclosure of sins and reparation. A careful examination of conscience is yet another significant component paving the way for a good confession and fruitful matrimony.

Church Fathers tried to combat the legacy of paganism and made tireless efforts towards Christianising family events, recalling the teaching of the Bible. Tertullian, for example, complained that the Christians of Carthage didn’t marry in the church. The article discusses Carmen XXV of Paulinus of Nola († 431), written for the occasion of marriage of Julian and Tysia. The poem contains one of the oldest descriptions of the ceremony of Christian marriage. Bishop of Nola pays attention to the spiritual dimension of the sacrament – specifically to its rich, full of symbols rite as well as to fact that the Christian meaning of the marriage ceremony should become the main focus for wedding preparations.

This article analyses the text of the draft document for the upcoming Great and Holy Synod entitled: „The Sacrament of Marriage and Its Impediments.” This document is one of the six topics that will be addressed by future Synod. The first version of this document was accepted in 1982, however the final draft text was significantly expanded and approved by the Synaxis of the Primates in January 2016.

The last decade is the time of numerous cultural changes, globalization of societies and development of technology. Considering the new challenges of civilization the younger generation often has difficulty defining their own way of life. Every person, especially a young one, makes many choices. Among them is the decision about the common life with another person. Pedagogy cannot remain indifferent to the issue of educating young people to cultivate the traditional Christian model of family life. Hence it is important to identify engagement as the period prior to the conclusion of sacramental marriage. More and more young people are shifting from the stage of friendship immediately to the role of spouses. Blessed John Paul II shows the three stages of preparation for the sacrament of marriage: closer, further and more direct one. It is worth undertaking these issues in order to lead to the development of specific indications of youth and bride couples that will help them to spend their future life in peace and harmony.
Ostatnie dziesięciolecia to czas licznych przemian kulturowych, globalizacji społeczeństw, a także rozwoju technologii. Młode pokolenie wobec nowych wyzwań cywilizacyjnych często ma trudności z określeniem własnej drogi życiowej. Każdy człowiek, szczególnie młody dokonuje wielu wyborów. Wśród nich jest decyzja o wspólnym życiu u boku drugiej osoby. Pedagogika nie może pozostać obojętna na wychowanie młodzieży do pielęgnowania tradycyjnego, chrześcijańskiego modelu życia rodzinnego. Stąd ważne jest wskazanie narzeczeństwa jako okresu poprzedzającego zawarcie sakramentalnego małżeństwa. Coraz częściej młodzi ludzie przechodzą z etapu relacji koleżeńskich od razu do roli małżonków. Błogosławiony Jan Paweł II wskazuje trzy etapy przygotowania do sakramentu małżeństwa: bliższe, dalsze i bezpośrednie. Warto podejmować te kwestie, aby doprowadzić do wypracowania konkretnych wskazań dla młodzieży i narzeczonych, które pomogą im spędzić przyszłe życie w zgodzie i harmonii.

Sakrament małżeństwa, wzorowany na ścisłym związku Chrystusa i Kościoła oraz realizujący to przymierze miłości, stanowi przestrzeń życia, modlitwy i dawania świadectwa o miłości Boga wobec małżonków. Jako taki jest skałą, o którą rozbijają się ataki sił ciemności.
Marriage, elevated by Christ to the rank of a sacrament, is not only God’s response to the split initiated by the devil’s temptation in the Garden of Eden, the restoration of the original unity and indissolubility, but it reflects the inner life and love of the Holy Trinity, which enables spouses to live in an attitude of total self-giving. The relationship of a woman and a man, based on faith, hope and love, is sanctified by the presence and constant accompaniment of the Spirit sent by the Father and Son, thanks to which their daily existential hardships and difficulties in spiritual struggle become possible to overcome. The sacrament of marriage, modelled on the close relationship between Christ and the Church and implementing this covenant of love, is a space for life, prayer and witness to God's love for spouses. As such, it is a rock against which the attacks of powers of darkness crash.

Artykuł odpowiada na pytanie o specyfikę urzeczywistniania się egzystencji Jezusa w życiu małżonków sakramentalnych. Sakrament małżeństwa tworzy nową komórkę wspólnoty eklezjalnej. Małżonkowie sakramentalni wdrażają w swoje życie naukę Jezusa przez naśladowanie Jego etosu miłości. Dlatego zasadne jest stwierdzenie, że konkretyzacja egzystencji Jezusa w życiu małżonków sakramentalnych jest działaniem „in Persona Ecclesiae”.
The article answers the question for the specificity of the coming true of the existence of Jesus in the life of sacramental spouses. The sacrament of matrimony creates a new cell in the ecclesial community. The sacramental couple initiate into their own life Christ learning through the imitation of His love ethos. Therefore, it’s reasonable to conclude that the concretisation of Jesus’ existence in the sacramental-spouses’ life is “in persona Ecclesiae”.

Przedmiotem artykułu jest refleksja nad duszpasterskim towarzyszeniem osobom przygotowujących się do zawarcia ślubu w Kościele katolickim proponowanym w najnowszym dokumencie Drogi wtajemniczenia katechumenalnego do życia małżeńskiego z 2023 r. Dokonana ona została na tle dotychczasowych dokumentów Magisterium oraz praktyki duszpasterskiej w zakresie przygotowania do sakramentu małżeństwa na przestrzeni ostatniego stulecia. Dla zrealizowania tak postawionego celu przeprowadzono analizę dokumentów Kościoła powszechnego, a także dokumentów Konferencji Episkopatu Polski odnoszących się do tego zagadnienia, przeanalizowano ponadto wypowiedzi poszczególnych papieży. Sobór Watykański II przyniósł istotną zmianę w spojrzeniu na sakrament małżeństwa. Konsekwencją refleksji soborowej były późniejsze wytyczne dotyczące sposobu przygotowania narzeczonych zawarte w adhortacji Familiaris consortio Jana Pawła II. Najnowszy dokument Dykasterii ds. Świeckich, Rodziny i Życia powstały po publikacji adhortacji Amoris laetitia papieża Franciszka, proponuje zmiany w towarzyszeniu narzeczonym i młodym małżonkom. W myśl założeń tego dokumentu powinno być ono realizowane poprzez drogę wtajemniczenia katechumenalnego, której pierwszym celem jest przybliżenie narzeczonych do Kościoła i rozbudzeniem wiary, a dopiero drugim bezpośrednie przygotowanie do ślubu.
The purpose of this article is to refl ect on the pastoral accompaniment of those preparing for marriage in the Catholic Church proposed in the latest document Catechumenal Pathways for Married Life presented in 2023 by the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life. It was done against the background of previous Magisterium documents and pastoral practice in the preparation for the sacrament of marriage over the last century. In order to achieve this aim, the documents of the universal Church and the documents of the Polish Episcopal Conference dealing with this issue have been analysed, as well as the statements of individual popes. The Second Vatican Council brought a significant change in the view on the sacrament of marriage. A consequence of the Council’s reflection were the later guidelines on the manner of preparation of fiancées contained in John Paul II’s exhortation Familiaris consortio. The most recent document of the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life, written after the publication of Pope Francis’ exhortation Amoris laetitia, proposes significant changes in the accompaniment of fiancées and young married couples. According to the guidelines of the document, this should be carried out through the path of catechumenal initiation, the first aim of which is to bring the engaged couples closer to the Church and to awaken their faith, and only the second is direct preparation for marriage.

Prawo do ochrony dobrego imienia i własnej intymności zagwarantowane jest w Kościele katolickim ustawowo wszystkim wiernym. Realizacja przedmiotowych praw może jednak zostać ograniczona przez władzę kościelną. Zważywszy, że każdego roku na terenie Polski około dwustu tysięcy osób uczestniczy w bezpośrednim przygotowaniu do małżeństwa, którego najistotniejszym elementem jest „egzamin przedślubny”, w artykule przeanalizowano podstawy prawne ograniczenia nupturientom w trakcie „egzaminu przedślubnego” prawa do ochrony dobrego imienia i własnej intymności. Wskazano również osoby kompetentne do zadawania pytań oraz określono zakres przedmiotowy tych pytań. W publikacji nie zabrakło rozstrzygnięcia wątpliwości, czy prawo duszpasterzy do stawiania pytań narzeczonym w trakcie spisywania protokołu implikuje obowiązek udzielania odpowiedzi na nie.
The right to protect one’s good reputation and privacy in the Catholic Church is guaranteed by statute to all the faithful. The exercise of these rights may, however, be restricted by ecclesiastical authority. Considering that about two hundred thousand persons participate in immediate preparation for marriage in Poland every year, the most essential element of which being “premarital enquiry”, the article analyzes the legal grounds for restricting the betrotheds’ right to protect their good reputation and privacy in the course of premarital enquiry. It also identifies persons competent to ask questions, and defines the subject-matter scope of such questions. The paper further addresses the issue of whether the right of pastors of souls to ask questions of the betrothed while drawing up minutes of the enquiry implies their obligation to provide answers.

The present article relates to the disposal of sewage. 1065 § 1 The Code of Canon Law, which requires the adoption of the sacrament of Confirmation of the Catholics who want to enter into the sacrament of the marriage. The author has developed an article based on open questions - maneat questio - the shape of this regulation, not giving clear answers to his conclusions, but provoking or inviting to the necessary scientific discussion and, consequently, to the good pastoral resolutions. It is reflected in so close connection of canon with the practical theology. This first becomes a source of applications for the solutions of the second. In this way, the first part is a presentation of the evolution of law regulations on the basis of canon law either universal or particular and presents a canonical and theological trials to explain the operation of the relevant canon of fairness as well as certain risks of its application to the specific cases. The second, which is a consequence of the questions raised in the first part, relates directly to the opinion of canonists and theologians attempt to justify taking a broad spectrum of the candidate's age for the Confirmation.

Niniejsze studium stanowi prezentację myśli teologicznej i praktyki liturgicznej związanej z małżeństwem w tej czcigodnej i starożytnej tradycji Kościoła. Analiza obejmuje kolejno kwestię rozumienia małżeństwa jako sakramentu, krótką historię rozwoju obrzędu, prezentację struktury ceremonii oraz kanoniczną dopuszczalność rozwodu. Najwięcej miejsca poświęca się liturgicznemu obrzędowi małżeństwa, który jawi się jako jeden z najbardziej rozbudowanych spośród wszystkich liturgii ślubnych Kościoła. W ostatniej części, podsumowującej całość studium, znajduje się kilka refleksji, które mogą stać się przyczynkiem do podjęcia dyskusji nad wizją małżeństwa we współczesnym świecie.
Marriage seen as union between man and woman, which was constituted by the will of the Creator Himself, is held in high esteem by every liturgical and theological tradition. The Assyrian Church of the East is no exception, even if in her canonical discipline the marriage is not included in the list of the sacraments. This study is a presentation of the theological thought and liturgical practice of marriage in the venerable and ancient Christian tradition. The analysis concerns: the issue of the sacramental understanding of marriage; the brief history of the development of the rite; the presentation of the structure of marriage ceremony; the canonical possibility of divorce. The main part of this article refers to the liturgical rite of marriage, which in the Assyrian Church of the East appears as one of the most complex among all the Christian marriage liturgies. In the last part we put some reflections, which can become a humble contribution to the further discussion on the vision of marriage in the contemporary world.

Księgi pokutne, które powstały w epoce późnej starożytności chrześcijańskiej i wczesnego średniowiecza, są świadectwem kształtowania się praktyki pokutnej w Kościele. Celem artykułu jest ukazanie w świetle dziewiętnastej księgi Dekretu biskupa wormackiego Burcharda niewłaściwych zachowań godzących w sakrament małżeństwa, które powodowały obciążenie winnych dotkliwymi karami – pokutami wymagającymi odpowiedniego zadośćuczynienia, często trudnego do realizacji. Biskup z Wormacji, dostrzegając szerzący się upadek obyczajów w kwestii wierności małżeńskiej, zobowiązał spowiedników, aby w czasie spowiedzi zwracali uwagę na sprawę nierozerwalności małżeństwa – zdarzały się bowiem przypadki wielożeństwa, czy nawet małżonkobójstwa w celu zawarcia nowego związku. Duszpasterze mieli także dążyć do tego, by poprzez pokutę wyeliminować niewłaściwe zachowania seksualne penitentów z członkami rodzin (współżycie ze szwagierką lub macochą), czy też namawianie współmałżonka do zdrady. W czasie sprawowania sakramentu pokuty odnoszono się ponadto do zagadnień związanych z przeszkodami do zawarcia małżeństwa, do których zaliczano chociażby przeszkodę pokrewieństwa, powinowactwa, czy też uprowadzenia kobiety w celu zawarcia z nią związku małżeńskiego oraz podkreślano znaczenie zaręczyn jako ważnego etapu do zawarcia małżeństwa.
Handbooks of penance created in the late ancient Christianity period and early Medieval times are proofs of a forming penance practice in the Church. The aim of this article is to show inappropriate practices related to entering into and fulfilling the sacrament of marriage, in the light of the Decree of Bishop Burchard of Worms who was known for the codification of the canon law. These practices caused significant penalties for those who committed them – penances requiring appropriate atonement which were often difficult to fulfill.The bishop of Worms who noticed an increasing breakdown of morality in regards to marital fidelity, obliged confessors to be vigilant during the sacrament of confession and point out the indissolubility of marriage, which deteriorated at the time – there were cases of plural marriage or even murder of the spouse in order to enter into another marriage. Through penance, priests were also obliged to help eliminate inappropriate sexual practices with members of families (sexual intercourses with sister in law or stepmother) or such acts as encouraging the spouse to cheat.During the sacrament of confession, priests also referred to impediments to marriage which included consanguinity, affinity or abduction of the woman in order to enter into marriage with her. They also highlighted the importance of engagement as an important period leading to marriage.

Przymierze między mężczyzną a kobietą nie jest jedynie przedmiotem układu prawnego lub jakiegoś kontraktu. W Kościele katolickim zostało bowiem podniesione do godności sakramentu. Nauka Kościoła jest więc jednoznaczna: małżeństwo pochodzi z ustanowienia Bożego. Dlatego też określane jest ono mianem przymierza, w miejsce dawnego określenia umowa. Ze względu na to, że jest sakramentem, którego udzielaniu towarzyszy odpowiednia forma zewnętrzna – wymaga obrzędu liturgicznego. Dlatego też ustawodawca kościelny sformułował zasadę dotyczącą formy zawierania małżeństwa. Opierając się na badaniach socjologiczno-pastoralnych autora, ukazana została strona praktyczna zawarcia małżeństwa w diecezji Wiłkawiszskiej na Litwie po odzyskaniu niepodległości od 1991 r. do 2012 r., a także zmiany zachodzące w latach późniejszych.
The matrimonial covenant by which a man and a woman establish between themselves a partnership of the whole of life is not a legal arrangement. In the Catholic Church it has been raised to the dignity of a sacrament between the baptized. The teaching of the Church is unambiguous that marriage is a divine institution. It is therefore referred to as ‛covenant’ instead of the former ‛contract’. This is a sacrament, which to assist at marriage must be an appropriate external form – requires a liturgical rite. Therefore, the ecclesiastical legislator formulated a rule regarding the form of the celebration of marriage. Based on the author’s sociological and pastoral research, the study explores the practical side of celebration of marriage in Wiłkawiszska Diocese.

Celem artykułu, jest ukazanie w świetle księgi pokutnej Discipulus Umbriensium Biskupa Canterbury Kościoła brytyjsko-irlandzkiego i jego problemów prawnych, jak i moralnych, które ta wspólnota napotkała na swojej drodze. Duszpasterze mieli czuwać, aby poprze spowiedź, która polegała także na odpowiadaniu przez penitenta na zadawane pytania przez spowiednika, a zwłaszcza przez nakładanie drobiazgowych i długoczasowych pokut, wyeliminować niewłaściwe postawy wśród członków Kościoła. Zdarzały się bowiem wśród nich przypadki wielożeństwa, czy też rozwiązanie małżeństwa za obopólną zgodą. Spowiedź była także okazją do zweryfikowania, czy wierni mimo przeszkody impotencji lub przeszkody wieku zawarli małżeństwo, zawierając go w sposób nieważny. Księga pokutna podejmowała również bardzo aktualne wówczas zagadnienie przywileju Pawłowego, wskazując okoliczności, kiedy wolno go aplikować. Analizowany penitencjał porusza także temat przyjmowania komunii świętej przez małżonków, wskazując pewne ograniczenia, jak i sugestie, kiedy małżonkowie powinni jak najczęściej przystępować do Stołu Pańskiego.
The article aims to show the British-Irish Church and the legal and moral problems encountered by this congregation in the light of the Discipulus Umbriensium handbook of penance written by the Bishop of Canterbury. Priests were to ensure that inappropriate behaviors of the members of the Church were eliminated through the sacrament of confession, during which the penitent was also expected to answer the questions asked by the confessor, as well as through meticulous and long-term penance. Such inappropriate behaviors included cases of plural marriage or dissolution of marriage based on mutual consent. The sacrament of confession was also an opportunity to verify if the penitents entered into marriage despite the impediment of impotence or age, and therefore entered into it in an invalid way. The handbook of penance also referred to the then very popular Pauline privilege and the circumstances in which it could be applied. It also spoke about receiving the Communion by the spouses and specific limitations and suggestions when it should be received by them as often as possible.
