Opis:
One of the phonetic curiosities of the modern Spanish language is the occurrence of a group of voiced allophones [ ß, R, y] in its phonetic and phonological system, at present defined by Spanish specialists in phonetics as "aproximantes" which are the realisation of /b, d, g/ phonemes inside words and between words. The paper presents the acoustic and articulatory basis for their detachment from the group of the fricative allophones and a detailed way of articulation. The issue of their articulatory stabilisation within the system of standard and non-standard Spanish is also raised. Additionally, the author of the paper pays special attention to problems of articulation in the process of teaching the above-named allophones in phonetics classes designed for the students of the Spanish philology.c

In the paper, an attempt has been made to describe the cultural and linguistic contacts between the local Maya civilization and the Spanish conquistadores. The consequences of that contact for the local culture and Mayan-Spanish interrelationships have been discussed. The authors emphasize that as a result of this intensive and long-time contact, the Spanish culture has not been completely imposed on the Maya culture, nor has Spanish language completely subjugated the Mayan language.

Terminological study of Nueba ymbención y demonstración de la quadratura del círculo of Diego Arias de Tavoada (1646) This geometrical treatise, entitled Nueba ymbención y demonstración de la quadratura de el círculo, was inspected in the files and catalogues of the Brussels Royal Albert I Library. Its first value is that has not been described by specialists. This work also proves the contribution of the Flemish publishers to spread the scientific production about various aspects during the 16th and 17th centuries, not only of literature or dictionaries and grammars, but the scientific works that were attended by the typesetter from Antwerp. With the study of this treatise we intend to show the enormous interest that the analysis of the scientific language acquire for the history of the Spanish language.

This paper stands up for the defence of writing as a hugely valuable resource for teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language or a Second Language. Specifically, it pursues two general targets: a) to highlight the importance of considering writing into the classroom of Spanish as a Foreign Language as a process that has to be constantly coached and developed; b) to emphasise how this way of teaching provides pedagogical benefits that go further the development of the writing ability itself, since it has an impact on other students’ general cognitive features. Methodologically, this text begins with a literature review that theoretically underpins the proposed targets, and, subsequently, our didactic proposal is exemplifiedby the use of a specific type of text (the match report). Then, a practical teaching resource is obtained as final result, which is supported by the recent literature on this issue. Finally, this contribution aspires to be implemented in different educative contexts by teachers of Spanish as a Foreign Language.

Over the past several years the number of students learning Spanish as a foreign language has doubled in Poland. The present article is an attempt at answering the following questions: Why is Spanish so popular in Polish schools and what are the reasons for choosing this language by Polish students? The authors wish to analyze the situation from the point of view of two types of motivation: internal (integral) motivation and external (instrumental) motivation. The results of our study have been compared to the results of corresponding studies carried out among Polish students learning German. At the opening of our deliberations we present the definitions and typical features of motivation. Next the typology and origin of motivation is discussed, which incorporates both the cognitive and affective approach. Finally, we submit the results of a pilot study performed among Polish middle school and high school students who learn Spanish.

The large number of words from Arabic found in modern Spanish is proof of the deep influence Arabic has had on the Spanish language. Historical sociolinguistic processes which have lasted to the present day indicate that the influence of Arabic culture has been neither brief or superficial. Instead, it has, and continues to have great significance for the language situation of Spain. Much linguistic research has shown how loans from Arabic have been assimilated as they have become part of the lexical resources of modern Spanish. Arabic culture and civilization in the Iberian Peninsula (711-1942) above all involved the sciences, literature, art, architecture, engineering, agriculture, the military, medicine. At that time, Al-Andalus was one of the most influential European centers of science and cultural exchange in Europe. Contacts between Arabic and the Romance languages found in the Iberian Peninsula resulted in numerous loans both from Arabic to the Romance languages and from the Romance languages to Arabic. These topics have been the subject of extensive research conducted from historical, cultural and linguistic points of view. Despite the existence of numerous works concerning Arabic loans, this area requires, further, deeper research. In this article, selected issues concerning Arabic loans in Spanish are analyzed as are the adaptive processes they have undergone and the level of their integration into Spanish. The basis of the analysis is made up of oral and written texts collected in the Corpus de Español del Siglo XXI [CORPES XXI, RAE] – a corpus of contemporary Spanish from the 21st century.

Yiddish and Judeo-Spanish as Determinants of Identity: As Illustrated in the Jewish Press of the First Half of the Twentieth CenturyThe paper shows an image and functions of Yiddish and Judeo-Spanish languages among Jewish Diaspora groups – the Balkan Sephardim and the Ashkenazim (the Ostjuden group) – in the period from the beginning of the twentieth century until the outbreak of World War II. The study is based on the articles from Jewish weeklies, magazines and newspapers from pre-war Bosnia and Hercegovina and from Germany/Poland. It demonstrates a double-sided attitude towards the languages. On the one hand – an image of the languages as determinants of Jewish identity. Touching on this theme, the authors of the paper also try to highlight the images of Yiddish and Judeo-Spanish and as determinants in a narrower sense – of the Sephardi/Ashkenazi identity in that period. On the other hand, the paper shows a tendency to treat the languages as “corrupted” and “dying” languages, and as factors slowing down the assimilation of Jewish groups and also as an obstacle for Zionist ideologies. Języki jidysz i żydowsko-hiszpański jako wskaźniki tożsamości – na przykładzie żydowskich tekstów prasowych pierwszej połowy XX wiekuArtykuł ukazuje obraz i funkcje języków jidysz i żydowsko-hiszpańskiego wśród żydowskich grup diasporowych – bałkańskich Sefardyjczyków oraz Aszkenazyjczyków (Ostjuden) – w okresie od początków wieku XX do wybuchu II wojny światowej. Opis oparty jest na artykułach z żydowskich magazynów, tygodników, prasy codziennej z przedwojennej Bośni i Hercegowiny oraz Niemiec/Polski. Ukazany jest ambiwalentny stosunek wobec języków. Z jednej strony – obraz języków jako wskaźników żydowskiej tożsamości, jak również obraz jidysz i żydowsko-hiszpańskiego jako wskaźników tożsamości w węższym ujęciu: tożsamości sefardyjskiej/aszkenazyjskiej w omawianym okresie. Z drugiej strony zaś – artykuł zwraca uwagę także na to, że oba języki były traktowane jako „zepsute”, „umierające” i stanowiące czynniki spowalniające asymilację grup żydowskich oraz przeszkodę dla idei syjonistycznych.

Place names referencing the material traces of past cultures are relatively common in the microtoponymy, of Spanish-speaking areas. Since they were created by rural speech communities completely lacking in historical and archaeological culture, they make it possible to reconstruct how realities of archaeological interest (fragments of tools and building materials, ruins of buildings, dolmens, menhirs, tombs, old coins, inscriptions, engraved or painted cave art, among others) were popularly perceived and interpreted long before becoming objects of scientific study. Taking an extensive toponymic corpus as its starting point, this paper presents an exhaustive classification of such names, differentiating those of a purely descriptive nature from those intended to provide answers to questions concerning the origins, age, and purpose of the enigmatic discoveries. This toponomastic analysis facilitates the rigorous study of the process of onymic creation and its underlying motives.

In the present article the subjectification process is being discussed in relation to the concept of interactional dynamics. It is suggested that to encode various semantic-pragmatic profiles can lead to changes at the level of communicative behavior patterns, which, for their part, are dominated by a particular order of socio-cultural conventionalization. The scope of conversational markers or nominal forms of address (NFA), which are submitted to analysis in the present study, indicates that the routinizing language use, together with an explicit grammatical manifestation, covers areas that appear to be semantically and pragmatically important in a given speaking community.

Attitudes, including beliefs, values, and motivation are within the scope of interest of numerous fields of study such as psychology, philosophy, sociology, and anthropology. In psychology, attitudes related to affective, cognitive and, in particular, behavioral reactions are studied. It is believed that attitudes do not only affect the behavior of the individual, but also their ways of evaluating specific actions. At the same time, empirical research in this area is extremely problematic and conditioned by many individual differences (e.g. age, gender, place of residence, personality traits, etc.). On the other hand, in glottodidactics, the common trend in this type of research is analysis of students' attitudes (including motivation) towards a foreign language and its culture(s). The purpose of the article is to briefly present the methodology of research on attitudes towards learning different languages. First, we review the concepts of attitudes, beliefs, values, and motivation from a psychological and didactic perspective. We also focus our attention on the types of attitude measurement used (which include motivation). Finally, we present some results of research conducted for the first time in Poland in the field of attitudes and motivation of secondary school students towards learning Spanish.

Con el inicio de la pandemia por COVID-19, la gente necesitó la información sobre la nueva enfermedad. Los periodistas en seguida la facilitaron en los portales de información. Por falta del conocimiento especializado, usaron muy a mendu la metonimia, pues aparecieron varios sinónimos populares adquiridos por consecuencia por los lectores. En el texto analizamos como el nombre COVID-19 (tomando en cuenta también todos sus sinónimos posible) que pertenece a la categoría de <enfermedades infecciosas> están actualizados en los textos que se pueden consultar en los portales de información de lengua española. Presentamos los determinantes y los verbos soporte usados por los periodistas hispanohablantes, lo que permite conocer mejor la combinatoria del nombre en cuestión, pero también de todos los nombres predicativos de la misma clase. Como los textos estudiados se caracterizan por un cierto nivel de especialización, los análisis de otros textos, más o menos especializados, pueden llevar a otras conclusiones.
With the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, people needed information about the new disease. The journalists immediately facilitated it in the information portals. Due to lack of specialized knowledge, they frequently used metonymy very often, so as a result several popular synonyms acquired by readers appeared. In the text we analyze how the predicative name COVID-19 (also considering all possible synonyms) belonging to the category of <infectious diseases> is actualized in the texts of the Spanish language press online. We present the determinants and light verbs which are mentioned used by Spanish-speaking journalists, and this allows to know better not only the syntax of the name in question but also the combinatory inventory of all the predicative names of the same class. As the texts studied are characterized by a certain level of specialization, the results of the study may do not correspond to the analysis of other, more or less specialized, texts., more or less specialized.

This work offers a description of the main lexical characteristics found in the Mexican Spanish variety by focusing on the language use of official exclusively male text producers in multiethnic and multilingual Oaxaca de Juárez from 1890 to 1911. Relevant works of Spanish linguistic historiography still postulate the beginning of an “español modern” from the 18th/19th century onwards. But the present qualitative study shows, based on a corpus, that diverse lexical variation was still realized in official documents in the 19th/20th century, as rubio and claro to characterize exclusively foreign sex-workers or as a limited lexeme repertoire to describe nose(shape), whereas a broad repertoire to characterize skin color is conspicuous. Furthermore, the data helps us to consider a variety that is still conspicuously absent in Spanish language history.
Der Beitrag analysiert lexikalische Merkmale der sprachlichen Varietät des mexikanischen Spanisch, indem sie sich auf den Sprachgebrauch offizieller ausschließlich männlicher Textproduzenten im multiethnischen und mehrsprachigen Oaxaca de Juárez zwischen 1890 und 1911 konzentriert. Während einschlägige Werke der spanischen Sprachgeschichtsschreibung den Beginn eines „español moderno“ ab dem 18./19. Jahrhundert postulieren, kann die vorliegende qualitative Studie unter Rückgriff auf ein eigens erstelltes Korpus vielfältige lexikalische Variationen aufzeigen, wie bspw. rubio und claro zur Beschreibung ausschließlich ausländischer Prostituierter oder ein limitiertes Lexemrepertoire zur Bezeichnung der Nasen(form), wohingegen ein breites Repertoire zur Charakterisierung der Hautfarbe auffällt, die in offiziellen Dokumenten realisiert wurden. Darüber hinaus helfen uns die gefundenen Daten, eine Vielfalt zu berücksichtigen, die in der spanischen Sprachgeschichte bislang immer noch zu wenig berücksichtigt wird.
