150th anniversary of Marx’s Das Kapital calls for yet another contemporary evaluation of Karl Marx’s legacy. The article argues that Marx’s most important and the longest standing contribution into social science is not „historical materialism” nor any particular form of “critical theory” – it is the concept of capital as a specific mode of creating value. The article seeks to extract the six major features of capital as described by Marx and demonstrate their conceptual originality and novelty. It also shows how numerous contemporary social scientist borrow and apply this category to the fields quite remote from Marx’s own research terrain. But the fact of multiplicity of capitals and quite remarkable homologies between them should not lead us to premature conclusion namely that the social world can be adequately represented as a system or hierarchy of capitals.

If several distributed and disparate computer resources exist, many of which have been created for different and diverse reasons, and several large scale computing challenges also exist with similar diversity in their backgrounds, then one problem which arises in trying to assemble enough of these resources to address such challenges is the need to align and accommodate the different motivations and objectives which may lie behind the existence of both the resources and the challenges. Software agents are offered as a mainstream technology for modelling the types of collaborations and relationships needed to do this. As an initial step towards forming such relationships, agents need a mechanism to consider social and economic backgrounds. This paper explores addressing social and economic differences using a combination of textual descriptions known as social profiles and search engine technology, both of which are integrated into an agent technology.

The purpose of this article is to demonstrate and illustrate the results of spending meas‑ ures in Poland of European Social Fund (ESF), which supports human resource develop‑ ment and, in particular, the systematic improvement of employee qualification. A start‑ ing point is the presentation of the European Social Fund in Poland. Then the Human Resource Development (HRD) is defined and analyzed from a few theoretical perspectives. In the following part of the article an analysis of progress is made in implementation of the strategic objectives of the Human Capital Operational Program (HCOP) and then the results of the implementation of the European Social Fund in Poland are presented. The final section shows conclusions and future research directions.

Individuals engaged in the labourmarket use a range of resources embedded in personal networks to improve their chances of getting a new job. Family, friends and acquaintances give access to various resources such as information, knowledge, trust, recommendation, money, etc. that may affect individual’s position on the labour market. Based on data collected with the Resource Generator tool among 9063 residents of Warsaw, we checked how embedded and mobilizable resources of family members, friends, acquaintances (social resources), as well as private resources owned by respondents (personal resources) affect individual’s perceived position on the Warsaw labour market. It was confirmed that chances of getting a job depend on the amount of embedded and mobilizable resources present in personal networks. However, relationship between embeddedness and usability of resources rely on the type of relation (family, friends, acquaintances) maintained by individual. We found that mobilizable resources are perceived as an asset on the labour market, while resources embedded in acquaintances network, that could be just accessed but not used, are considered a threat. At the same time, personal resources of respondents improve perceived chances of getting a new job inWarsaw. The observed dependencies between social and personal, embedded and mobilizable resources prompt a discussion on the shape and role of social capital in the urban labour market.

The purpose of this study was to identify the main ways to provide social assistance to restore the resource potential of victims of emergencies (military conflicts, the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, etc.), as well as to highlight the features of training future specialists in the social sphere to deal with new social risks. The study used methods of scientific analysis and generalization, as well as comparing the experience of domestic and foreign researchers and social practitioners who worked with vulnerable contingents in overcoming the consequences of emergencies. The focus is on generalizing the results of the experience of training future specialists in the social sphere to work within an environment of new social risks. Based on the conducted research, it was concluded that for the professional activity of social sector specialists in resource provision in the conditions of new social risks, it is important to direct social assistance to restore the physical, mental and social health of people at all six levels of health, taking into account the peculiarities of their age, social status, as well as ethnic features and the context of the social problem. The main directions of relevant social work with victims of emergency situations have been defined: work on strengthening the family’s potential, establishment of useful social connections in a new environment, the use of art therapy practices to normalize the psychosomatic state of clients, the use of ethnocultural means to increase the possibilities of social adaptation in new conditions. Very important in the preparation of future specialists for the relevant work is the practice-oriented training on the basis of specialized social institutions working with victims in emergency situations, as well as mastering special techniques of self-development and professional self-improvement to increase one’s own resource potential.

The paper aims to examine the Human Resource Development (HRD) in small and medium enterprises (SMEs) funded by the European Social Fund (ESF) in Poland between 2007 and 2013. The research is based on theories that support HRD investment specifically in SMEs, and uses the Human Capital Theory (HCT) with some extensions. The paper addresses the question of public support in HRD and international support for development purposes. Finally it stresses that the support may have national and international implications. The research methodology involved a series of computer assisted telephone interviews (CATI) in a sample of 44 SMEs that received EU funding for HRD. It also included computer assisted personal interviews (CAPI) with experts in the ESF, participant observation and analysis of the project documentation. The findings indicate that the ESF effort of international scope had a positive impact in Polish SMEs.

We analyse Give and Take, a multi-stage resource sharing game to be played between two players. The payoff is dependent on the possession of an indivisible and durable resource, and in each stage players may either do nothing or, depending on their roles, give the resource or take it. Despite these simple rules, we show that this game has interesting complex dynamics. Unique to Give and Take is the existence of multiple Pareto optimal profiles that can also be Nash equilibria, and a built-in punishment action. This game allows us to study cooperation in sharing an indivisible and durable resource. Since there are multiple strategies to cooperate, Give and Take provides a base to investigate coordination under implicit or explicit agreements. We discuss its position in face of other games and real world situations that are better modelled by it. The paper presents an in-depth analysis of the game for the range of admissible parameter values. We show that, when taking is costly for both players, cooperation emerges as players prefer to give the resource.

If a personality cannot, or has no time to adapt to change, his/her own algorithms of behaviour, a way of thinking, a way of life, it can result to exclusion, cognitive dissonance, physical and psychical diseases, as the result of such exclusion.

Research background: The sustainability of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) represents a significant scientific and professional problem in the current turbulent period because these enterprises play an important role in any country’s economic and social systems. Purpose of the article: This paper aimed to define the significant sustainability factors of small and medium-sized enterprises and to quantify their impact and importance on the sustainability of SMEs. The areas of Human Resource Management, Corporate Social Responsibility, and financial management were defined as significant sustainability factors. Methods: Empirical research, on which the scientific hypotheses were formulated and evaluated, was conducted in June 2022 in V4 countries (Czech Republic, Slovak Republic, Poland, and Hungary) using a structured questionnaire. The study accumulated a sample of 1398 respondents. Data collection was conducted through an external agency, MN FORCE, operating in Central European countries. The Computer Assisted Web Interview (CAWI) method was used to record respondents’ perceptions. Descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and linear regression analysis were used to evaluate the hypotheses. Findings & value added: The research showed that all defined factors in the areas of Human resource management (HRM), Corporate social responsibility (CSR), and financial management of the firm had an impact on defined sustainability attributes. The greatest impact was found on the firm’s financial management, followed by CSR and HRM. The empirical results confirm that the intensity of the independent variables varies across the V4 countries. These results also show that the intensity of the selected HRM, CSR, and financial management factors of a firm is higher in the integrated models than in the models for individual V4 countries. The research results have shown that a range of factors determine the right attitude towards the sustainability of companies. In this context, economic policymakers and entrepreneurs must perceive sustainable growth as complex and apply a systemic approach to its design and implementation.

This paper explores the multifaceted concept of social development within economically advanced countries, delving into the implicit assumption of technological advancement as a cornerstone for well-functioning economies. While digital technologies shape broad socio-economic processes, a counterfactual perspective emerges when examining social development through the lens of (nature-based) social welfare. The analysis encompasses the coexistence of advanced technologies with disparities in living standards, resource appropriation mechanisms impacting both populations and environments, and the underexplored negative consequences of techno-economic development. The article addresses the visible and invisible impacts of information technologies, emphasising issues of labour exploitation, resource extraction practices, and the environmental costs of digital production. Critically assessing optimistic scenarios, the paper suggests the need to broaden discussions beyond the positive aspects of technology, considering the challenges for sustainable welfare posed by exploitative labour, resource extraction, and inequitable benefits. The study advocates for an inclusive approach to (nature-based) social welfare, encompassing marginalised issues and proposing concepts such as degrowth as potential solutions to the rapid development of information technologies and their societal implications.

The conceptual model of a medium of popular science content was implemented with consideration of its functional features. The algorithm of development, the architectonics peculiarities, the representation forms of designed model involve to take into account the requirements for the functioning of a modern competitive information product. The purpose of creating the conceptual model of medium of popular science content is implementation of the concept of mass media, which will ensure compliance with such system of interconnected requirements: presentation of scientific content in popular form; segmentation of the purpose-oriented audience; achievement of commercial success of the project; availability of an evolutionary perspective. During the research, the following methods of scientific knowledge were used: comparative-historical, analytical methods of classification and grouping, methods of modelling, foresight and SWOT-analysis, descriptive method. The comparative-historical method was used to analyze and systematize data on the formation and development of popular science content; classification and grouping – to specify the thematic and typological features of popular science content; the method of comparison – to identify the common and distinctive features of different models of medium of popular science content; descriptive method – for presenting and substantiating the research results. The basis of the concept of modelling the medium of popular science content is the opinion that the successful functioning and competitiveness of the content medium is the result of strategic design as a mechanism of social management. The use of foresight methodology in the development of the conceptual model of a medium of popular science content gave the opportunity to take full account of the features of its stylistic and typological characteristics, based on the potential of integration of journalistic skills, innovative marketing and information technology. The creativity has the highest potential because of ability to strengthen all the basic principles: both during the formation (modification) of the creative concept, and during the formation and development of informative and artistic content, and during the implementation of convergence processes. This testifies that a creative approach is a necessary component of success in all areas of the functioning of a medium of popular science content, because it is directed to design original, innovative forms and methods of journalistic art, which in its integrated summary is capable to generate a qualitatively new mass-media product.

The aim of the study was to describe the implementation of socially responsible business actions addressed to employees in five areas. The two hypothesis has been assumed: 1. The analyzed company acts in social responsibly way towards the employees shaping their quality of work life; 2. Social responsible actions aimed to employees are infl uencing their quality of life and are important factor of financial success of the company. The original internal data from enterprise and data from other research were analyzed. The main method of research was case study. Data have been obtained through in-depth interviews. Elements of human resource management (HRM) in the enterprise have been characterized. The research found the level of implementation of the concept of corporate social responsibility (CSR) towards internal stakeholders and its importance in shaping the quality of work life.
W pracy poruszono kontynuowany od niedawna problem badawczy, którym jest jakość życia zawodowego. Celem opracowania był opis realizacji działań odpowiedzialnego społecznie biznesu skierowanych do pracowników w podziale na pięć obszarów. Sformułowano dwie hipotezy: 1. Przedsiębiorstwo stosuje społecznie odpowiedzialne działania skierowane do pracowników i wpływające na jakość ich życia; 2. Społecznie odpowiedzialne działania firmy są istotnym elementem wpływającym na sukces finansowy przedsiębiorstwa. W badaniach analizowano pierwotne dane wewnętrzne pochodzące z przedsiębiorstwa oraz wyniki badań innych autorów. Główną metodą badawczą było studium przypadku. Dane uzyskano za pomocą wywiadu pogłębionego. Scharakteryzowano elementy zarządzania zasobami ludzkimi w przedsiębiorstwie. W wyniku badań ustalono poziom realizacji koncepcji odpowiedzialności społecznej biznesu wobec interesariuszy wewnętrznych i jej istotność w kształtowaniu jakości życia zawodowego.

W artykule scharakteryzowano wolontariat pracowniczy jako narzędzie CSR, podkreślając jego rolę w zarządzaniu zasobami ludzkimi. Przedstawiono wybrane definicje wolontariatu pracowniczego i jego formy. Przeanalizowano dobre praktyki wolontariatu pracowniczego z lat 2016-2018 pod kątem realizacji Celów Zrównoważonego Rozwoju oraz wskazano określone korzyści z jego stosowania w organizacjach. Ponadto opisano wyniki własnego badania empirycznego przeprowadzonego wśród wybranej grupy wolontariuszy, dotyczącego kompetencji rozwijanych w trakcie działalności wolontaryjnej.
The article characterizes corporate volunteering as a CSR tool, emphasizing its role in human resources management. Selected definitions of corporate volunteering and its form are presented. Good practices of corporate volunteering were analyzed from 2016-2018 in terms of achieving the goals of sustainable development and specific benefits from its use in organizations. In addition, the results of own empirical research conducted among a selected group of volunteers regarding the competences developed during voluntary activities are described.

Permanentne dostosowywanie się rodzin do dokonujących się przemian społeczno-normatywnych w Polsce sprawia, że wiele z nich nie nadąża za realizacją swoich potrzeb. Mimo, że większość z nich niczym specjalnym nie różni się od swoich poprzedniczek, to coraz częściej obserwuje się, że w sytuacji kryzysowej radzą sobie coraz gorzej, a pojawienie się kolejnej uniemożliwia codzienne funkcjonowanie. Pośród wielu przyczyn takiego stanu rzeczy wskazuje się na zmiany kulturowe, wysoki poziom urbanizacji, rozwój technologii informatycznych, izolację i indywidualizację życia. W rodzinach wielopokoleniowych, przy silnych więzach sąsiedzkich, łatwiej było o wsparcie. Szybciej zauważano rodzące się problemy. Dzisiaj, pozbawione wzorców młode rodziny, wyalienowane ze swoich naturalnych rodzin pochodzenia, mogą korzystać z różnych instrumentów polityki społecznej, dedykowanych rodzinie i jej poszczególnym członkom. Niniejszy artykuł nosi znamiona przeglądowego; popularyzującego dostępne formy pomocy rodzinie w ramach krajowej polityki społecznej. Wskazane zostaną potencjalne zagrożenia, które niesie z sobą polityka socjalna, postrzegana jako wsparcie niemalże bezwarunkowe, zwłaszcza przy braku permanentnej ewaluacji świadczeń i elastycznej modyfikacji udzielanej pomocy.Rekomendacje skutecznej i nieuzależniającej pomocy opierają się na pracy na zasobach własnych rodziny. Background: Permanent adaptation of families to the social and normative transformations occurring in Poland makes many of them unable to fulfil their needs. Regardless of the fact that most of them are no different from their predecessors, it has been observed increasingly more often that they are coping much worse in a crisis situation, what is more, the occurrence of another crisis, makes everyday life impossible. Among many reasons for this phenomenon are cultural changes, high level of urbanization, development of information technologies, isolation and individualization of life. In multi-generational families, alongside strong neighbourly ties, it was easier to obtain support. The emerging problems were noticed more quickly. Objectives: Today, young families, which are devoid of models and alienated from their natural families, can benefit from various social policy instruments, dedicated to the family and its individual members. The potential risks of social policy, seen as almost unconditional support, will be indicated, particularly, in the absence of permanent evaluation of benefits and flexible modification of the rendered assistance. Methodology: This article constitutes a review of the available forms of family support within the national social policy. The author refers to studies by researchers, reports commissioned by the MRPiPS (Ministry of Family, Labour and Social Policy), as well as data available in databases of GUS (Statistics Poland) or CBOS (Centre for Public Opinion Research). Recommendations for assistance that is both, effective and does not cause dependency, are based on the method of the use of the family's own resources. Conclusions: There is a constant need to make the employees of the social support system more sensitive to the fact that persons/families benefiting from a wide offer of institutional assistance are at risk of partial and, in time, total dependence on this assistance. Working with families with multiple problems should be based on the experiences of their members and reinforcing their sense of agency in shaping the future of life.
