    The article presents the role of Polish clergy in the Russo-Japanese war of 1904-1905 on the basis of press publications of the time. Tens of thousands of Poles took part in this conflict. Their engagement in this war is still little known. Even less known is the involvement of Polish Catholic priests in this war. The author has analyzed about 50 Polish-language magazines published in Polish territories under the Russian partition. The work contains memoirs from the war front, included in letters written by Polish Catholic priests, their opinions and accounts. These men played a great role at the war front. They provided spiritual support and raised the morale of Polish soldiers. They helped to treat the wounded and performed daily field-duties. Catholic priests were treated with great respect and recognition.

    This article starts from the European misgivings, founded or not, about a foreign invasion. It underlines how this fear has always been present in the old continent and how it can be observed from a different point of view. In fact this short essay deals with the fear of “yellow people” in Europe between 1800 and 1900 and with the role played in influencing Europeans’ imaginary and fears by missionaries and war correspondents in the Far East. History that should be magistra vitae ends up being a lesson we never learn. The main events analyzed in this paper are the Boxer rebellion and the Russian-Japanese war.

    In the Russian-Japanese war in 1904–1905 about 50,000 Polish soldiers took part in the ranks of the Russian army. During the journey to the front of the Trans-Siberian Railway they had the opportunity to see Siberia for the first time. In letters to relatives and loved ones, they described their impressions of this trip. Unfortunately, very few of them have been preserved in the original, but fortunately many of them were reprinted by the Polish press during the war. Thanks to this, we can see what Polish soldiers remembered about this journey. The soldiers, mostly peasants, described the Siberian nature – mountains, forests, rivers, climate, Siberian cities and villages, the appearance and customs of their inhabitants. Separate fragments were also devoted to local food and prices of food products that increased significantly during the war. A lot of space is also occupied by descriptions of the Trans-Siberian Railway itself, especially bridges and tunnels that made a great impression on the soldiers. A separate place in the letters is occupied by fragments concerning the attitude of the soldiers themselves, religious life and meetings with the Poles living in Russia.

    This paper presents the problem which the Japanese Government had in gaining financial support for the war with Russia (19041905). It is based on the private correspondence and diaries of Jacob Schiff and Takahashi Korekiyo, which provide a closer look at the problem of conducting the war. It also shows the first moment when Japan confirmed its position as a world power, becoming the first Asian country which was treated as an equal partner by the Western powers.

    Generał Lucjan Żeligowski pochodził z polskiej rodziny szlacheckiej, herbu „Bończa”. Jego przodkowie walczyli ze Szwedami w XVI wieku, a jego ojciec brał udział w powstaniu styczniowym w 1863 roku. Jedna z najbardziej kontrowersyjnych postaci w korpusie generałów II RP. Walczył w wojnie rosyjsko-japońskiej (1904-1905). Podczas Wielkiej Wojny, po zgodzie władz rosyjskich na tworzenie polskich formacji wojskowych, był współorganizatorem Brygady Strzelców Polskich, walczył w szeregach Polskiej Dywizji Strzelców i w Pierwszym Korpusie Polskim W ostatnim okresie wojny współorganizował 4. Dywizję Strzelców Polskich, z którą dotarł do Polski przez Odessę i Besarabię. Walczył z wojskami Zachodnioukraińskiej Republiki Ludowej i w wojnie polsko-radzieckiej - na Froncie Północnym (10 DP) oraz w walkach pod Radzyminem (podczas bitwy warszawskiej). Po wojnie na czele 1. Dywizji Piechoty Litewsko-Białoruskiej zajął Wilno i doprowadził do powstania Republiki Litwy Środkowej. „Bunt Żeligowskiego” zaowocował przyłączeniem tego obszaru do Polski. W Wojsku Polskim był dowódcą Inspektoratu Wojskowego nr 2 w Warszawie i Ministrem Spraw Wojskowych. Po zamachu stanu Piłsudskiego (zamachu majowym) stanął na czele Komisji Likwidacyjnej powołanej w celu wyjaśnienia okoliczności i przebiegu wydarzeń majowych w 1926 r. Był także inspektorem armii w Generalnym Inspektoracie Zbrojnym Siły. 31 sierpnia 1927 r. przeszedł na emeryturę. W 1928 r. został przewodniczącym Kapituły Orderu Odrodzenia Polski i członkiem Trybunału Stanu. W 1935 r. został wybrany posłem na Sejmu IV kadencji z listy Bezpartyjnego Bloku Współpracy z Rządem - przewodniczył Komisji Wojskowej Parlamentu, a następnie był posłem na Sejm V kadencji z listy bezpartyjnej. Podczas II wojny światowej był członkiem Rady Narodowej Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej, przewodniczącym Komitetu Wojskowego i kanclerzem Orderu Virtuti Militari. Zwolennik słowianofilstwa. W okresie powojennym opowiadał się za współpracą z ZSRR. Zmarł w Londynie w 1947 r. Spoczywa na Cmentarzu Wojskowym na Powązkach w Warszawie.
    General Lucjan Żeligowski came from a Polish noble family, the coat of arms “Bończa”. His ancestors fought against the Swedes in the sixteenth century and his father participated in the January Uprising in 1863. He is one of the most controversial figures in the corps of generals of the Second Polish Republic. He fought in the Russian-Japanese War (1904–1905). During the Great War, after the consent of the Russian authorities to create Polish military formations, he was a co-organizer of the Polish Riflemen Brigade, he fought in the ranks of the Polish Rifle Division and the Polish First Corps. In the final period of the war he co-organized the 4th Polish Rifle Division, with which he reached Poland via Odessa and Bessarabia. He fought with the armies of the Western Ukrainian People’s Republic and in the Polish-Soviet War – the Northern Front (10 DP) and in the fighting at Radzymin (during the Battle of Warsaw). After the war, the 1. Lithuanian-Belorussian Infantry Division took Vilnius and led to the creation the Republic of Central Lithuania. „Żeligowski’s Mutiny” resulted in joining this area to Poland. In the Polish Army he was the commander of the Army Inspectorate No. 2 in Warsaw and the Minister of Military Affairs. After Piłsudski’s coup d’état (the May coup), he stood at the head of the Liquidation Commission set up to clarify the circumstances and course of May events in 1926. He was also an Inspector of the Army in the General Inspectorate of the Armed Forces. On August 31, 1927, he retired. In 1928 he became the president of the Chapter of the Order of Polonia Restituta and a member of the State Tribunal. In 1935 he was elected a member of the Parlament (Sejm) of the 4th term from the list of the Non-Partisan Block of Cooperation with the Government – he chaired the Parlament Military Commission, and then the Parlament (Sejm) of the 5th term from the non-party list. During World War II, he was a member of the National Council of the Republic of Poland, chairman of its Military Committee and Chancellor of the Order of Virtuti Militari. A supporter of Slavophile in the postwar period, he was in favor of cooperation with the USSR. He died in London in 1947. He rests at the Military Cemetery in Powązki in Warsaw.

    The author focuses on one of the finest Russian admirals of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries – Stepan Osipovich Makarov. The text is split into three parts, presenting several topics discussed in “Kurier Warszawski”, based on historical contents. The Polish press presents, for example, biography of the fallen Russian, and short reports of church devotions dedicated to him. Also included are simultaneously interesting and frightening descriptions of his reactions on losing his family. Another element of the work are his messages concerning the battle between Russian and Japanese fleets and the tragic death of the Russian admiral. The data on the casualties of the officers are the same as historiography presents. In case of navy, the number of the fallen differs from the number presented by Olender and Dyskant. Technical parameters of the sunken Russian ship match the observations made by researchers, although the moment of sinking differs from the findings made by this field’s professionals in the following decades.
    B этих соображениях автор обращает внимание на профиль одного из самых выдающихся русских адмиралов рубежа XIX и XX веков – Степана Осиповича Макарова. Текст состоит из трех основных частей, в которых представлены несколько вопросов, поднятых на страницах «Курьера Варшавского», а также литературы по этой теме. Польская пресса включает, среди прочего, биографию павшего русского, а также краткие репортажи со служб, отмеченных в его честь. Представлены также интересные, но и пугающие описания первых реакций на смерть командира самых близких ему людей. Еще одним важным элементом являются сообщения о битве между российским и японским флотами, последующае трагическаю гибель россиянина. Данные о потерях соответствуют указанным историографией, но только в отношении к количеству погибших офицеров. Число погибших моряков отличается от представленного, например, Олендером или Дискантом. Технические параметры затонувшего русского корабля представлены в соответствии с наблюдениями более поздних исследователей, хотя сам момент погружения на дно царской единицы отличается от выводов сделанные в последующие десятилетия профессионалами, работающими в этот исторический период.

    Erazm Piltz (1851–1929), one of the leaders of the realist fraction thought that after the January Uprising of 1863 there was no chance that Poland would regain sovereignty. All attempts to defend, and later to regain, independence had ended with a defeat. Each and every next uprising brings a threat of an extermination of the nation, especially that Western countries would not militarily help, since they would not want to start a war with the countries that had partitioned Poland. There is also no chance of a conflict between those countries. That is why Piltz was convinced that legal methods should be used to try to ensure the best possible conditions for the nation’s existence in each of the partitions. He saw a chance to ameliorate the situation of the Poles in the Kingdom of Poland only in reforming Russian political system, especially during the 1905–1907 revolution that was an effect of the war between Russia and Japan. Similarly during the First World War he argued in favour of such a solution. In time his views evolved and starting from the 1917 revolution he noticed a chance for Poland’s sovereignty, yet still under Russia’s protection. He abandoned this view after the Bolshevik revolution of November 1917. From that moment, as a part of the Polish National Committee, he acted in favour of regaining independence. During the period of the Second Republic of Poland he exercised numerous functions as a diplomat and tried to enforced Poland’s international position.
    Erazm Piltz (1851–1929), jeden z liderów stronnictwa „realistów”, zaliczany do tzw. nurtu „ugody” z Rosją uważał, że po powstaniu 1863 r. nie ma szans na suwerenność Polski. Wszystkie próby obrony, a następnie jej odzyskania środkami militarnymi skończyły się klęską. Każde kolejne powstanie zagraża zagładą narodu, a państwa zachodnie nie udzielą pomocy militarnej, gdyż nie zdecydują się na wojnę z zaborcami. Nie dojdzie też do konfliktu między nimi. Dlatego był przekonany, że należy legalnymi środkami starać się o zapewnienie jak najlepszych warunków bytu narodu w każdym z zaborów. Szanse na jego poprawę w Królestwie Polskim widział jedynie w przypadku zreformowania ustroju Rosji, szczególnie w czasie rewolucji 1905–1907, będącej efektem wojny rosyjsko-japońskiej. Podobnie w latach I wojny światowej opowiadał się za takim rozwiązaniem. Z czasem jego poglądy zaczęły ewoluować i od rewolucji 1917 r. dostrzegał szansę na odbudowę suwerenności, lecz także pod egidą Rosji. Opcję tę porzucił po przewrocie bolszewickim z listopada 1917 r. Od tej pory w ramach Komitetu Narodowego Polskiego działał na rzecz uzyskania niepodległości, a w II Rzeczypospolitej, pełniąc szereg funkcji w dyplomacji, starał się wpływać na umocnienie jej pozycji międzynarodowej.
