Opis:
Energy efficiency is one of most critical parameters in photovoltaic (PV) systems. Overall PV system efficiency improvement may be achieved by such means as topological changes, new generations of transistor switches and/or planar magnetic components use. But on the other hand whole system must follow the wheather changes such as solar energy delivery variation due to cloud shading as well as temperature fluctuations. In such conditions a driver should dynamically track maximum power point (MPPT) of a PV array. For the purposes of better understanding PV array performance the paper shows MatLab simulation of 3.2 kWp PV array. The driver discussed works with a range of different step up DC-DC converter topologies such as bridge based topologies as well as interleaved ones. The ASCII protocol which can be implemented in PC application is responsible for working parameters settings carrying and output data logging as well as current software status check. The paper presents practical implementation of the driver as a part of larger PV system where the interleaved DC-DC converter works with 3.2 kWp PV array of ten PV modules connected in parallel. Described MPPT algorithm takes advantage of modified Perturb and Observe (P&O) method. Presented are microcontroller hardware resources utilization, functional software architecture and developped MPPT algorithm which performance is shown on the plot.

Opis:
Low voltage photovoltaic (PV) array delivers electric power to the renewable energy systems which utilize step-up DC-DC converters. The performance of PV array is strictly dependent on environmental conditions such as solar radiation and ambient temperature. In this paper presented is MATLAB model of low voltage 3.2 kWp PV array composed of ten PV panels connected in parallel. The model itself is based on photodiode model and is supported by datasheet parameters of examined PV panels. Presented P-V curves show an influence of solar radiation and temperature on electric power produced by the array. The model simulation results were verified on computer aided laboratory test setup built upon LabVIEW environment. The test setup comprised PV array connected to 6 kW electronic DC load which was controlled by LabVIEW application. Since test conditions should be steady during test time each measurement of real PV array full P-V curve has to be done as quick as possible. This can be assured by computer aided measurement approach where time consumming tests can be easily automated and shortened. This paper presents PV array model, describes test setup and discusses laboratory test results.

Opis:
In low-voltage photovoltaic (PV) systems high-efficiency high voltage gain step-up DC-DC converters are required as the interface between the PV panel and the load. Therefore overall performance of the PV system is essentially affected by the efficiency of step-up DC-DC converter itself. This paper presents the results of PSpice simulation of high-efficiency interleaved step-up DC-DC converter. The converter integrates boost and flyback topologies. Interleaved approach minimizes the current stress on the switches as well as allows reducing a sizes of the inductors but also decreases input current ripples. The other advantage of interleaving structure is flexibility of number of working phases extension. The number of working phases can be dynamically determined depending on the power requirements of the load. High efficiency assured by boost-flyback topology is achieved by the means of recycling the energy from input leakage inductance and relatively low voltage stress across the transistor switches which enables low drain-to-source resistance transistors application. The simulation carried out will present transient and performance characteristics of interleaved step-up DC-DC boost-flyback converter.

Opis:
In the work, the authors explain the concept of operation of an autonomous photovoltaic system with particular focus on the role of battery charging controllers. Didactic experiments that complement the theoretical knowledge on the construction and the principles of operation of photovoltaic systems of the “off-grid” type were conducted. The laboratory set described provides the capabilities to analyze the operation of small autonomous photovoltaic systems which are analogous to complex systems that are used in real settings. The systems are especially popular in Poland and that is why it is important to deepen the knowledge on them. Particular attention is put in the article on the cooperation of photovoltaic elements with energy storage devices (condensers and batteries) and with the load points with the use of battery charging controllers (serial and shunt) and of a module protecting the energy storage devices against discharging. The review of different solutions is complemented with sample measurement tests and with the test results for the tested system of the “off-grid” type.

Opis:
The major goal of electric power companies is to give the quantity of electricity claimed by each consumer. This does not function without posing problems because consumption increases with time and the production will not be adequate to cope with the need for electricity. Besides, we may face environmental issues such as the increase of CO2 in the world, the conditions of producing energy, the difficulty of easily, quickly and economically storing large quantities of electricity. One of the solutions that could restrict and solve the problems is the production of renewable energy. In this paper, we focus on photovoltaic products; we present the photovoltaic conversion chain such as modeling, adaptation and control systems, as well as photovoltaic characteristics and system analysis methodology and planning of a photovoltaic system based on the OOPP method (Objectives Oriented Project Planning).

Results of infrared research conducted on a photovoltaic system which works in an on-grid mode for over a year are presented in the article. The installation described is regularly shadowed by a cooling system. Thermograms of photovoltaic modules in strong and light shadow were conducted. These images show that even in very weak shadow the PV cells are overheated. This has led to small point damages in the amorphous panels and in the future it may also lead to the destruction of polycrystalline modules.

Paper shows an overview of the basic algorithms of maximum power point tracking (MPPT) in the photovoltaic systems, ie the direct and indirect methods. This issue is very important in modern photovoltaic systems because it allows to optimize the energy yield for given input parameters (irradiation, weather conditions, temperature, etc.). Paper shows how the different algorithms work, and for selected models gives equations describing their results. Also examines the strengths and weaknesses of selected methods and their applicability in modern photovoltaic systems.

This article addresses the problem of fault early detection in photovoltaic systems. In the production field, solar power plants consist of many photovoltaic arrays, which may suffer from many different types of malfunctions over time. Hence, fault early detection before it affects PV systems and leads to a full system failure is essential to monitor these systems. The fields of control and monitoring of systems have been extensively approached by many researchers using various fault detection methods. Despite all this research, to early detect and locate faults in a very large photovoltaic power plant, we must, in particular, think of an effective method that allows us to do so at the lowest costs and time. Thus, we propose a new robust technique based on the inverse of the belonging individual Gaussian probability (IBIGP) to early detect and locate faults in the power curve as well as in the Infrared image of the photovoltaic systems. While most fault detection methods are well incorporated in other domains, the IBIGP technique is still in its infancy in the photovoltaic field. We will show, however, in this work that the IBIGP technique is a very promising tool for fault early detection enhancement.

This paper presents a dual inductor-fed boost converter with an auxiliary transformer and voltage doubler for sustainable energy power converters. The new topology integrates a two-phase boost converter and a dual inductor-fed boost converter. The energy stored and transferred by both inductors can attain a wide input-voltage and load range which uses a constant switching frequency, by controlling the time duration of the simultaneous conduction of the two switches. Among other current-fed type boost converters the presented topology is attractive due to the high voltage conversion ratio, less stress on the components and less switch conduction loss. To verify the feasibility of this topology, the principles of operation, theoretical analysis, and experimental waveforms are presented for a 1 kW prototype.
