Opis:
Most historians studying the evolution of the concept of nation and national idea in East Central Europe, assume that through the nineteenth century the political meaning was gradually giving place to the ethnic understanding of ‘nation’. Without radically questioning this evolution of the meaning, I would like to stress that it is far from obvious. Starting with the Enlightenment, the term and concept of ‘nation’ were used so widely in the Polish public debates that it is relatively easy to find quotations to support any generalisation. Any decision about choosing some source materials and discarding some others is inevitably grounded in certain methodological and philosophical assumptions. Some assumptions have to be accepted (for otherwise, a historian would not be able to say anything), but we need to be conscious that their choice is, in the last resort, arbitrary.

By May 29, 2019, Nigeria’s Fourth Republic and democracy had achieved an unprecedented 20 unbroken years of active partisan politics and representative democracy. The First Republic had lasted barely three years (1963-1966); the Second Republic and its democratic institutions lasted just four years (1979-1983) while the Third Republic (19921993) could barely hold its head for one year. Hence, by mid-2019, not many analysts have congratulated Nigeria for its longest democratic experience since its independence from Britain in 1960, but hardly did any of them identify the core reasons for such a sustained rule of democratic ethos for two decades. In this paper, we show the origin and practice of political parties in Nigeria. We argue that the country had succeeded in its Fourth Republic as a democratic country because its law and constitution together with the political culture of the people had permitted multiparty democracy by which governments had been formed, political inclusion and popular participation ensured, and public policies initiated. We also present an analysis of party politicking in the country from its beginning in 1923 and conclude that Nigeria has achieved meaningful and sustainable dividends of democracy in her Fourth Republic because of a maturing culture of partisan politics.

Štefan Polakovič - slovak ideologue and theoretician of the nationŠtefan Polakowice is a leading representative of the philosophy of the people inSlovakia. The opinions of Š. Polakovič about the nation changed. In the early period of creativeness he characterized the nation in terms of the organism. In his late works he was examining the substance of the nation in terms of atomism and moderate individualism. The fundamental metaphysical thesis about the existence of the nation is the one that the nation, just like a man, is a creation of God. Hence, the nation has the tasks to be accomplished designated by God. It is the duty of creative members of the nation to recognize the will of God in relation to the nation. Š. Polakovič in connection with the diversity concept of the nation recognized the need for existence of philosophical science of the nation - nationology. Nationology is to examine fundamental issues metaphysical, epistemological and axiological of the nation as being incomparable with any other object. Štefan Polakovič - słowacki ideolog i teoretyk naroduŠtefan Polakovič jest czołowym przedstawicielem filozofii narodu na Słowacji. Poglądy Š. Polakovicia na naród zmieniały się. We wczesnym okresie twórczości naród charakteryzował on w kategoriach organizmu. W późnej twórczości analizował istotę narodu w kategoriach atomizmu i umiarkowanego indywidualizmu.

The article aims to analyse the physical practising of gender by women in Polish nationalist organisations to reflect on what vision of the nation is reproduced by these embodied gender practices. Using information obtained from interviews and observations, I seek an answer to how the physical gender practices correspond to the logic of the gendered presence of women as members of a national community (Anthias & Yuval-Davis, 1989). One of the main conclusions of the analysis is that the physical body and the gender practices involved in it are a significant stronghold of reproducing the roles that the nation imposes on women. This is related to justifying cultural differences by referring to the biological differences between genders. What is particularly interesting, however, is the fact that the body and its physical capabilities provide space for gender transgressions beyond established norms.

The author begins with the analysis of the place of globalization notion in currently happening social life transformations - universalization and emancipation. He takes note of replacing the notion of universalization by globalization despite the ambiguity of both notions and frequent opposition of their features. Then he presents analysis of social life in political, economic and cultural spheres, in order to draw attention to the relation between national state, nation and international corporation, being a representative of globalization. This analysis leads to the conclusion that globalization is not a complimentary process to universalization, but is one of the symptoms of emancipation processes. This results in the author's conclusion that globalization does not threaten the existence of national states and nations.

Opis:
The question of gentry and the Lithuanian national project: the example of the newspaper Litwa (1908–1914)At the end of the 19th and beginning of 20th centuries some national movements in the Eastern and Central Europe actualized the question of how to include the gentry into the process of the formation of modern nations. Similar initiatives were taken in Lithuania. During 1908–1914 in Vilnius, a highborn poet and publicist Mečislovas Davainis‑Silvestraitis (Mieczysław Dowojna-Sylwestrowicz, 1849–1919) also edited a periodical Litwa in Polish, which was aimed to welcome gentry into the Lithuanian national movement.Lithuanian and Polish historians who studied the relations between Lithuanian national movement and gentry, in general dealt with two questions, namely: how Polonization of the gentry evolved the issue and why major part of the gentry did not participate in the Lithuanian national movement. Otherwise, the question was the attitude of the ideologists of Lithuanian national movement had towards the gentry at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century in academic works. In this article, after using for research the ideological basement of Litwa that is to welcome gentry to Lithuanian national movement, three questions are studied: the attitude to that question of different Lithuanian parties and political groups during this period, circumstances that caused changes of these attitudes and the role in this process of returning gentry to Lithuanian nation played by the periodical Litwa. W latach 1908–1914 szlachetnie urodzony poeta i publicysta Mieczysław Dowojno-Sylwestrowicz (Mečislovas Davainis- Silvestraitis, 1849–1919) wydawał w języku polskim w Wilnie czasopismo „Litwa”, które dążyło do włączenia szlachty do litewskiego ruchu odrodzenia narodowego.

Globalization is a multithreaded and complicated process, but nowadays necessary to understand modern cultural reality. With globalization are connected such terms as: "flow space", "shrinking of time and distance", "diffusion of cultural features". Globalization is a multidimensional process of interaction between different factors: from economical to social and cultural. In many situations the traditional perceiving culture in categories like "we-they" looses its importance. All specific places and "their" culture is currently a part of global "we", figuratively created by pop culture. It is pop culture what absorbed many motives and essences of many national cultures of the world.

Opis:
The paper looks at the role of traditional foodways and related cultural practices in Oneida’s contemporary food sovereignty efforts, and the various understandings of the continuity of food and agricultural traditions in the community. The tribe’s Tsyunhehkw^’s (joon-hen-kwa) farm, whose name loosely translates into “life sustenance” in English, serves important cultural, economic and educational purposes. It grows Oneida white flint corn, which is considered sacred by the tribe and is used for ceremonial purposes, it grows the tobacco used for ceremonies and runs a traditional Three Sisters Garden. The Three Sisters – corn, beans and squash, are an important part of the Oneida creation story, as well as the vision of Handsome Lake – a Seneca prophet from the turn of the 19th century, who played an significant role in the revival of traditional religion among the People of the Longhouse.[1] They inform the work done at Tsyunhehkw^ to provide healthful food for the Oneida community. [1]The Oneida form part of the Iroquois Confederacy (as called by the French), referred to as the League of Five Nations by the English, or the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, as they call themselves. Haudenosaunee translates into the People of the Longhouse. The Confederacy, which was founded by the prophet known as Peacemaker with the help of Hiawatha, is made up of the Mohawks, Oneidas, Onondagas, Cayugas, and Senecas. It was intended as a way to unite the nations and create a peaceful means of decision making. The exact date of the joining of the nations is unknown and it is one of the first and longest lasting participatory democracies in the world (“About the Haudenosaunee Confederacy” 2019).

Opis:
The Belgrade Waterfront real estate development project has attracted a considerable amount of interest among scholars from various disciplines in a short period of time. Nevertheless, these works are limited in scope. This paper draws upon existing literature on nation building by first contextualizing it before adding insights from party strategies and cultural studies (with a particular focus on identity issues) research streams. It thus aims to contribute to the nascent debate about how the new ruling elite of Serbia uses such urban projects to emancipate from the nationalist rhetoric and supporting symbols of the 1990s. The main argument of this paper is that state narratives, media coverage and branded icons of Belgrade Waterfront illustrate political regime’s switch to the global to contain the national in order to build and publicize its own ‘revitalized’ idea of the nation and legitimize its take on power. The underlying strategy consists in manipulating individuals’ preferences by marginalizing opposition parties. The research design relies on a multi-method approach crossing participant and ethnographic observation over a period of 7 years, as well as a critical analysis of the Serbian regime’s discursive strategies and project’s branding efforts using an original visual material.

In this perspective, the discussion focuses on historical and theoretical aspects of functioning of translation in community making process. The discussion also explores relations between translation and imagination, especially in the context of the notions of imagined communities by Benedict Anderson, and cultural translation by Homi Bhabha. Both notions stress the dimensions of translational and translatological activity, which can be discussed in the categories of critical activity and a sort of political activity.

In recognition of national and ethnic life phenomena and processes Caucasus is a specific reality. It is assessed that Caucasian space of 440000 km2 is inhabited by over 100 nationalities and ethnic groups. Their historical fate, including national politics created specific way of their appearing, functioning social-political attitudes, aims and aspirations. The feature which distinguishes nationalities and ethnic groups of Caucasus is strong relation to the space they come from. Because of its numerical force they did not manifest the tendency to conquer and gaining new spaces. But in the reality of superpower's reign they had been resettled and dispersed. These phenomena had mostly appeared in XX century during so called Soviet ethnic politics. Caucasus is still a place of constant disagreements, contradictions and conflicts. Processes of ethnic transformations in Caucasus are the biggest challenge of political life. All ethnic groups must be concerned as subjects, attention must be drawn to the basic criterion that generates them and stimulates them to cultural development. In reality the language is an important mater - it is perceived as one of the fundamental parts of the development of institution of nationality and ethnic group and also as a trouble spot, next to religion and contradictory national interest.

The discussion about nation and ideas connected with it has a long tradition, tremendously multithreaded and varied in interpretations. We are practically unable of counting all attempts to create the definition of a nation. They are all more or less precise, for understandable reasons reflects their author's social and cultural experiences, reaching for specific metaphors, and sometimes being a form of intellectual provocation. A conception of a nation is strongly tied to the category of minority, especially the ethnic minority. Both those definitions are often used in turns. A very interesting issue is analyzing the connections between nationalism and religion.
