On May 20, 1921 during the ceremony of presenting a gram of radium to Maria Skłodowska-Curie, the President of the United States, Warren Harding, called the Polish scientist “the most noble of human beings, the best wife and a loving mother who could combine all the woman’s duties with the immense effort of her fabulous work.” It is unquestionable that scientific research in the field of experimental physics was the main aim and sense of Maria Skłodowska-Curie’s life. But this field of science, which a two-time Noble laureate has chosen, was, at those times, “exclusively male.”

The article discusses the idea of universities for children, particularly its foundation by Maria Skłodowska-Curie and the current condition of this initiative. Maria Skłodowska-Curie was not only an excellent scientist, but also a great teacher and an educational innovator. She was the first to show that university may be a great place for children to learn. She emphasised that universities should be responsible not only for teaching but also for students’ flourishing. Modern universities seem to draw on this inspiring idea developed by Skłodowska-Curie. The author describes how the Maria Skłodowska-Curie cooperative changed as well as how the idea evolved into the university for children as it is recognised today.

In this essay, author deals with the interpretation of a very original, new monodrama by Artur Pałyga, entitled In Radiance (2016), whose heroine is Maria Skłodowska-Curie. The author is interested in a poetic and performative dimension of Maria’s dozen monologues, which the author described as − completely unknown letters’ of the scientist. These monologues reveal the process of Maria’s spiritual development from the moment of attaining maturity, until her death due to excessive irradiation. Kopciński focuses on the aspects of Maria’s consciousness, which Pałyga has brought forth from the myth of Faust, which comprises the foundation of the scientific worldview. In this monodrama, Skłodowska-Curie is the Polish Faust, who is ready to break the moral rules and pay the price of her and others’ life for sheer possibility of revealing the mystery of the universe. Kopciński confronts this original literary image of a scientist with the history of her life and highlights the moments in her biography that can be read as an execution of the ‘Faustian bargain’. At the end of his work he compares the character of Skłodowska-Curie, who calls herself Faustina, with the figure of another, extraordinary woman who has also adopted this name − Maria Faustina Kowalska. The comparison of the scientist and the mystic woman allows us to see many similarities in the characters of both, their way of life and their relationships with other people, but also describe fundamental differences in the worldviews they represent. Finally, two Faustinas are two different symbols. The figure of a scientist symbolizes desire for intellectual control over the world, which is constantly changing like elements discovered by Maria Skłodowska. On the other hand, the figure of the mystic symbolizes desire for an inner union with loving God, which involves the sacrifice of one’s ‘self’ to gain eternal life of the immortal soul.

The purpose of the conference was to identify categories of women and their activities less recognized in the field of contemporary humanities. A number of representatives from academic centres and institutions of scholarly research from Poland and abroad took part in the event. Sprawozdanie z międzynarodowej konferencji naukowej „Kobieta niepoznana: od starożytności po czasy współczesne”Międzynarodowa konferencja naukowa „Kobieta niepoznana: od starożytności po czasy współczesne” została zorganizowana 22–23 września 2016 r. przez Zakład Historii Polski Średniowiecznej i Dziejów Gospodarczych Uniwersytetu Marii Curie-Skłodowskiej w Lublinie. Jej celem było wskazanie dotychczas słabo rozpoznanych w nauce kategorii oraz obszarów aktywności kobiet. W spotkaniu wzięli udział przedstawiciele licznych ośrodków akademickich oraz instytucji naukowo-badawczych z Polski i zagranicy.

The article is a continuation of the life story of Maria Skłodowska - Curie. (The first part of the article was published in the last issue of the journal). In the second part of the article the authors describe the life of the double Nobel Prize winner beginning from 1914 year. The process of creation of radiological centers on the French army activity territories during the first world war was characterized. Then the visit in USA and efforts of M. Skłodowska-Curie to establish the Radium Institute in Warsaw were mentioned. The authors underline the perserverance and determination of the Maria Skłodowska-Curie personality. She was active as a scientist and she participated in the many international conferences even her health condition was getting worse.

25 lat temu kilkoro pasjonatów podziwiających pracę, dokonania i osobowość Marii Skłodowskiej-Curie postanowiło utworzyć stowarzyszenie, którego zadaniem będzie propagowanie wiedzy na temat odkryć, pracy naukowej Uczonej. Dodatkowo postawili sobie za cel przypominanie czy wręcz informowanie świata o fakcie, że Maria Skłodowska-Curie urodziła się w Warszawie, że uważała się za Polkę i była dumna z tego faktu. Na początku lat 90. rzadko poza Polską można było przeczytać o Jej polskim pochodzeniu. Liczne spotkania, imprezy, wystawy organizowane przez Towarzystwo Marii Skłodowskiej-Curie w Hołdzie oraz bardzo wyraźnie podkreślona w statucie działalność edukacyjna była i jest obecnie w centrum działań Towarzystwa.
25 years ago, several enthusiasts admiring the work, achievements and personality of Maria Skłodowska-Curie decided to create an association whose task would be to promote knowledge about the discoveries and scientific work of the Scientist. In addition, they set themselves the goal of reminding or even informing the world about the fact that Maria Skłodowska-Curie was born in Warsaw, that she considered herself Polish and was proud of this fact. At the beginning of the 90s, it was rarely possible to read about her Polish origin outside Poland. Numerous meetings, events, exhibitions organized by the Maria Skłodowska-Curie Society in Homage and very clearly highlighted in the statute educational activity was and is now at the center of the Society\ u0027s activities.

One of the first decisions of the Polish Committee of National Liberation [Polski Komitet Wyzwolenia Narodowego] during the Second World War was the establishment of Maria Curie-Skłodowska University. It was supposed to be a secular college created from scratch. Over the seventy-five years of its operation UMCS has been constantly developing. One of the reasons is the fact that it has been managed by such rectors as Wiesław Skrzydło. He held this function from 1972 to 1981. It was the second longest term of office of one rector in the university’s history, after the ten-year rule of Professor Grzegorz Leopold Seidler. The purpose of this article is to present the profile of Professor Wiesław Skrzydło as the rector of Maria Curie-Skłodowska University. It contains an outline of the biography as well as a presentation of the development of the university and the objectives for the term of office of Rector Skrzydło. It also describes his achievements at the didactic, scientific and organizational level.
Jedną z pierwszych decyzji Polskiego Komitetu Wyzwolenia Narodowego, jeszcze w trakcie II Wojny Światowej, było utworzenie Uniwersytetu Marii Curie-Skłodowskiej. Miała być to świecka uczelnia stworzona od podstaw. Przez siedemdziesiąt pięć lat funkcjonowania UMCS stale się rozwija. Między innymi dlatego, że kierowali nim tacy rektorzy jak Wiesław Skrzydło. Sprawował on tę funkcję w latach 1972-1981. Był to drugi co do długości trwania okres urzędowania jednego rektora w historii uniwersytetu, zaraz po dziesięcioletnich rządach profesora Grzegorza Leopolda Seidlera. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest przedstawienie sylwetki profesora Wiesława Skrzydły, jako rektora Uniwersytetu Marii Curie-Skłodowskiej. Zawarto w nim zarys biografii, przedstawiono rozwój uczelni i cele kadencji Rektora Skrzydły, a także scharakteryzowano jego dokonania na płaszczyźnie dydaktyczno-naukowej i organizatorskiej.

The paper is of a review character and in historical terms, it contains an overview of research on polonium from the time of its discovery in 1898 (125 years ago) to the present time. The article contains a description of the state of knowledge about the chemistry of polonium, taking into account its physicochemical properties, as well as methods of its production and the radioactivity of its isotopes, as well as its current scientific and industrial applications. The issue of strong radiotoxicity of polonium and the dangers associated with research on it, as well as numerous example of diseases and death from its absorption into the human body, are described in detail. Despite the passage of 125 years since the discovery of polonium, it still fascinates researchers with its mysteries that have not been fully understood, revealed and explained. The sources of this peculiarity should be sought in the fact that although it is classified as a metal, it also has non-metallic properties and can form a number of different chemical compounds. Several chemical compounds of polonium have been tested, which are very easy to get into the human body, where it causes terrible havoc. Alpha particles emitted from decay of 210Po can cause damage to proteins and DNA that load to cell death or such changes in the body that consequently initiate the development of cancer. So you could say that polonium not only has a rich past, but also has an undeniably interesting future.

W bieżącym roku przypada 85 rocznica otwarcia Instytutu Radowego przy ul. Wawelskiej 15 w Warszawie. W 1932 r., była to bliźniacza tak nowoczesna placówka leczenia chorych na nowotwory obok Instytutu Radowego w Paryżu. Był to dar uczonej dla społeczeństwa polskiego, które z własnych funduszy zbudowało Instytut niejako w darze dla Marii Skłodowskej-Curie. Uroczystości, które odbyły się przed pomnikiem uczonej na ul. Wawlskiej 29 maja 2017 r. potwierdziły jak ważne jest miejsce zarówno z punktu widzenia historycznego, jak i medycznego.
This year marks the 85th anniversary of the opening of the Radium Institute at Wawelska Street in Warsaw. In 1932, it was a twin modern cancer treatment facility besides the Radium Institute in Paris. The Radium Institute was the scientist’s gift to the Polish society, which built the Institute from its own funds, as a tribute to Maria Skłodowska-Curie. The celebrations which took place in front of the Monument to the scholar at Wawelska Street on 29 May 2017, confirmed the importance of this place both from historical and medical point of view.
