    Na wstępie autor wyjaśnia przyczyny podjęcia tytułowego zagadnienia mimo obfitości literatury naukowej na ten temat – jedną z przyczyn jest Rezolucja Europejskiej Federacji Narodowych Instytucji na rzecz Języka (EFNIL). Po przypomnieniu historycznych prolegomenów kultury języka (werdyktów normatywnych) skupia się na dwu społecznych zadaniach językoznawstwa: krzewieniu kultury i poprawności językowej oraz popularyzacji wiedzy językoznawczej. W odniesieniu do pierwszego z tych zadań rozpatruje kwestie warunków skuteczności werdyktów normatywnych oraz podstaw naukowych tych werdyktów.
    In the introductory part of this paper, the author explains the motives for undertaking the topic despite the abundance of scientific literature on the subject, one of the reasons being the Resolution of European Federation of National Institutions for Language (EFNIL). Following a review of the historical introduction to the culture of language (normative acts), the author focuses on two social functions of linguistics: propagation of culture and linguistic correctness plus dissemination of linguistic knowledge. As for the first abovementioned task, the author analyses the conditions of the effectiveness of normative acts and the scientific foundations of these acts.

    This article aims to create parallels between the Italian Questione della lingua and modern-day debates on linguistic globalization. In doing so, it identifies some important commonalities between the two phenomena which, though of different magnitude and occurring in different historical circumstances, are quite analogous in nature. By highlighting the important nexus between language and culture, this analysis observes linguistic standardization as a process that can have deleterious consequences on cultural diversity. By considering the ascension of a Florentine-based variety to the status of national language in Italy a process encouraged by hegemonic aspirations rather than motivated by objectives of communicative efficiency, this work attempts to show how linguistic standardization is not always beneficial, and that, instead of having levelling or equalizing effects it can, instead, continue to perpetrate oppressive trends. The article, though characterized by eco-critical undertones, weighs both the risks and benefits of the various possible outcomes of the need for linguistic globalization: the designation of an artificial language (namely, Esperanto) as a global lingua franca; the takeover of an existing natural language (such as English) or of modified versions of natural languages (Basic English, Latino sine flexione); the deculturalization/dehistoricization of an existing language (Anna Wierzbicka’s research on Natural Semantic Metalanguage). By exploring and acknowledging the aftermath of the Italian Questione della lingua, and comparing the Questione to current debates on linguistic globalization, one can make important generalizations and observations on such processes and their potential consequences.
    L’obiettivo di questo articolo è quello di tracciare dei paralleli tra la questione della lingua italiana e gli odierni dibattiti che riguardano la globalizzazione linguistica. L’analisi identifica delle similitudini fra i due fenomeni i quali, nonostante siano di dimensioni diverse e appartenenti a periodi storici diversi, presentano una simile natura. Evidenziando l’importante nesso fra lingua e cultura, la presente osserva la standardizzazione linguistica come un processo che può avere conseguenze deleterie sulla diversità culturale. Considerando l’ascesa della variante fiorentina al trono di lingua nazionale un processo motivato da pretese egemoniche piuttosto che dall’efficacia comunicativa, l’articolo tenta di dimostrare che la standardizzazione linguistica non è sempre vantaggiosa e che, piuttosto che offrire risultati che incoraggino l’eguaglianza può, piuttosto, perpetuare delle attitudini oppressive preesistenti. Quest’analisi, pur se caratterizzata da sottotoni di natura ecolinguistica, valuta i rischi e i benefici dei possibili esiti del bisogno di una globalizzazione linguistica: l’elezione di una lingua ausiliare (ad es., l’esperanto) come lingua franca globale; la presa del potere da parte di una lingua naturale (come l’inglese) o di versioni modificate di una lingua naturale (il Basic English o il latino sine flexione); la deculturalizzazione/destoricizzazione di una lingua esistente (riferendosi alla ricerca di Anna Wierzbicka sul metalinguaggio semantico naturale). Riconoscendo ed esplorando i risultati della “questione della lingua italiana” e comparandola ai dibattiti odierni sulla globalizzazione linguistica, si possono fare importanti generalizzazioni su questo tipo di processi e sulle possibili conseguenze da essi causate.

    Language imperialism and political correctnessIn the times of general globalization, in its part that considers languages, especially the so-called small languages, we can talk not only about an uncontrolled inroad of mainly English words into all walks of life within a society, but also about elements of linguistic imperialism.That imperialism has come about through technology, not by arms and blazing swords, as was mostly the case in history. In addition, the USA – the exporting country of the above mentioned language-imperialistic phenomena around the world, is considered to be the cradle of the much advocated political correctness, which should include basic human rights, one of which is undoubtedly the right to a proper name.It could be argued whether this right is always respected: I will show some examples of proper names of immigrants who had to/wanted to renounce their names in order to be Americanized (‘‘cooked in the American melting pot’’). Thus, the Croatian Krešo became Chris, Eva is spelled Eve on the other side of the pond (pronounced /I:v/), and in the global (American) news Michael Stich, a German, is pronounced /majkl stits/, and so on.I will also provide an example of political correctness which is not far from sheer stupidity.Political correctness itself changes with time, which will be illustrated by the Croatian example Ciganin – Rom (Gipsy – Roma(ny)).

    The questions of protecting native African languages and cultures as the main components of ethnocultural identity in Sub-Saharan Africa are dealt with. Language policies in relation to the languages of former metropolises depending on the language of state governance are compared. The reasons and causes of failures connected with attempts by newly independent African regimes to replace European languages in the main spheres of state and public life with native African languages are considered. The role of education in maintaining and developing local languages and cultures is shown.

    The main purpose of this article is to show the influence of globalization-related social and cultural changes on the language and linguistic perception of the world presented by the oldest inhabitants of a contemporary village. The research material contains the informal utterances of respondents aged 65+, which were collected during geographical research from 2011 to 2020 in the area of Wręczyca Wielka municipality near Klobuck in the north of Silesia Province. The first part of the article is a short description of the traditional rural community. Next, the author describes the changes which have been seen in Polish villages since 1945. In the second part, on the basis of the respondents’ utterances, the author shows the influence of the aforementioned changes on the language and linguistic perception of the world of the oldest inhabitants of Wręczyca Wielka municipality.
    Głównym celem artykułu jest próba ukazania wpływu globalnych zmian społeczno-kulturowych na język i językowe postrzeganie świata przez najstarszych mieszkańców współczesnej wsi. Materiał badawczy stanowią nieoficjalne wypowiedzi informatorów powyżej sześćdziesiątego piątego roku życia, zgromadzone podczas badań terenowych w latach 2011–2020 w gminie Wręczyca Wielka na północy województwa śląskiego w powiecie kłobuckim. W pierwszej części artykułu scharakteryzowano pokrótce tradycyjną społeczność wiejską. Przybliżono także szeroko pojęte przemiany, które dokonały się na polskich wsiach po roku 1945. W drugiej części – na podstawie wypowiedzi informatorów – omówiono wpływ wspomnianych przemian na język i językowe postrzeganie świata przez najstarszych mieszkańców gminy Wręczyca Wielka.
