The article discusses a range of common problems faced by international students while studying in Russia, drawing on the example of Ural Federal University (Ekaterinburg). Analysis of the sociological data has shown that international students have to deal with the following adaptation barriers: organizational barriers which students face when joining the educational process; socio-cultural barriers which mostly stem from the lack of language proficiency; getting accustomed to daily routines of living on the campus; informational barriers caused by a low awareness of the conditions of life and studying in Russia (Russian cultural norms and values, the climate of the Urals, etc.). The article reveals a correlation between the specificity of the countries international students come from and the main stages of their adaptation, providing guidelines for improvement of international student support at Ural Federal University.

This research investigated international undergraduate students’ needs when adjusting to their new campus, academic and social life. The results from a significant survey of international students provided us with an evidence base to understand the improved student experience this cohort may seek in what will likely be a competitive environment for attracting international students post-COVID-19. While this case study has focused on one faculty, our findings are relevant to higher education institutions across disciplines, domestically and internationally.

This research aims to identify and rank the problems which international students face during study in Belarus. The main method was descriptive research conceptualized within sojourner theory. Preliminary interviews followed by a survey (N=300) revealed that the sojourners’ problems were in the following order, from major to minor: (a) psychological and health-related challenges, primarily, homesickness and health disorders; (b) academic challenges, such as the new educational system and taking exams; (c) sociocultural challenges, especially communication with native speakers; (d) general living challenges. To prevent and solve these problems, the study provides experimentally based recommendations how to foster a supporting learning environment.

This article investigates practices and integration strategies implemented by a European network of universities with regard to refugees and international students, in particular, integration practices at two levels: governance and policies, regarding the institutional initiatives used and their relative success; second, the experience of such policies by international students. Our study revealed that in relation to refugee integration there is an overall lack of organisation, with too little, scattered information with respect to a bottom-up policy. In contrast, with regard to international students the system works fairly well, due to the top-down policy promoted by the EU. We propose that the EU put in place a specific program for refugee integration, such as ERASMUS+, focused on strengthening links with refugee families and schools with a high proportion of refugees.

Foreigners face certain barriers in accessing medical care, though international medical students are in many aspects privileged in this field. The aim of this study is to explore whether these students are facing problems in accessing healthcare. An original survey questionnaire was prepared and distributed online and on paper among students. In total 138 questionnaires were filled out. The results were analyzed using statistical methods. The main barriers faced by students are the lack of knowledge about the healthcare system and language problems. The study shows there is a need to start working on institutional solutions to provide information about access to healthcare and to overcome language barriers in healthcare institutions.

The aim of this paper is to explore the effectiveness of tandem classrooms in promoting intercultural communicative competence by comparing the competence of students before and after participation in tandem classes. This research is based on the descriptive statistics from a survey administered at a university in South Korea. The survey was conducted in 2016 during the second semester, and it used students who participated in tandem classrooms by employing a questionnaire to measure the effectiveness of the tandem classrooms in relation to intercultural communicative competence and the students’ perception of their own competence after completing the tandem classes. The result of the research shows that unlike the initial expectations, there is no meaningful sign that the surveyed students have developed intercultural communicative competence, which means that tandem classrooms did not actively help students improve this competence. In this study, an in-depth interview with students was also conducted in 2019 to find out why such a result occurred. Although tandem classrooms would be highly valuable as a language learning method, the approach may require redesigning and reimplementation in great detail to become a method for developing intercultural communicative competence. Therefore, this study highlights the underlying need for a revised curriculum for students attending tandem classrooms.

The paper addresses the issue of culture shock and the challenges met in the process of adaptation to a new culture, as experienced by international students studying in Poland. Until recently, Poland has not been regarded as a very attractive educational market. Poland joining the EU in 2004 contributed to a surge in various types of migrant arriving in the country, including international students. However, for the last few years the number of young people coming to Poland in order to study has been growing steadily. Yet, this growth does not mean that state, local or university authorities have any knowledge of how to resolve possible future conflicts which might and often do arise between overseas students and the society which receives them, or of how to help these students with their everyday problems. This dilemma is the result of a lack of studies regarding this group. Previous studies regarding migrants in Poland were only slightly focused on international students. In spite of the fact that international students are migrants, they differ significantly from other types of migrant – mostly those who are in Poland for economic or political reasons. The aim of the research presented in this article was therefore to carry out an initial exploration of the problems which this group encounters both at university and in society. The research was carried out in two stages with medical students in Łódź. The first stage was a paper-based questionnaire completed by international students studying at the Medical University of Łódź (N=74). The second stage involved three focus-group interviews conducted with some of these students.

Od kilkunastu lat stopień umiędzynarodowienia polskich uczelni systematycznie wzrasta. Niewątpliwymi katalizatorami tego zjawiska były wstąpienie Polski do Unii Europejskiej oraz przystąpienie do Procesu Bolońskiego i Europejskiego Obszaru Szkolnictwa Wyższego. Jaką rolę w tym procesie mogą spełniać lub pełnią akademickie książnice? W artykule podjęto próbę określenia zadań biblioteki akademickiej w kontekście umiędzynarodowienia uczelni. Zasygnalizowano również działania, które biblioteka akademicka powinna podejmować w celu własnego rozwoju, budowania kompetencji międzykulturowych pracowników czy inteligencji kulturowej organizacji.
The place of an academic library in the process of internationalization of a university. The degree of internationalization of Polish higher education institutions has been systematically increasing for several years now. Poland’s accession to the European Union, the Bologna Process, and the European Higher Education Area have undoubtedly been catalysts for this phenomenon. What role in this process can play or already play academic libraries? This paper attempts to summarize the tasks of an academic library in the context of the internationalization of teaching and research. There are also mentioned activities that an academic library should undertake for its own development, such as developing the intercultural competences of its employees or the cultural intelligence of the organization.

Although acculturative stress (AS) studies have been conducted for five decades, we still know little about it. Moreover, we do not have a specific framework for international student population. The purpose of this paper is to explore how to use theories and research methods in different contexts and develop a framework. We systematically review articles related to this field, particularly 92 studies published until 2020. There are common variables in AS, comprising social, cultural, psychological, communicative, and demographic factors which managers and decision makers should properly understand and administer in organizations. This article also confirms a link between AS and mental and behavioral outcomes. We have elaborately developed a framework including antecedents and outcomes of AS. Suggestions have also been offered for future research.
Badania nad stresem akulturacyjnym (AS) są prowadzone od pięciu dekad, niemniej nadal wiemy niewiele na jego temat. Dodatkowo, do dziś nie udało się opracować jednolitych ram badawczych dla populacji studentów międzynarodowych. Z tego też względu celem tego artykułu jest próba opracowania takich ram badawczych oraz ustalenie, w jaki sposób optymalnie korzystać z teorii i metod badawczych w zależności od kontekstu badania. W artykule dokonaliśmy systematycznego przeglądu literatury dotyczącej AS, skupiając się na 92 badaniach opublikowanych do 2020 roku. Udało nam się ustalić, że w przypadku AS można wyróżnić powtarzające się zmienne, obejmujące czynniki społeczne, kulturowe, psychologiczne, komunikacyjne i demograficzne. Dzięki tej wiedzy menedżerowie i decydenci powinni móc lepiej zrozumieć organizacje i zarządzać nimi. Ponadto w niniejszym artykule potwierdziliśmy związek pomiędzy AS a wynikami psychicznymi i behawioralnymi oraz opracowaliśmy szczegółowo ramy badawcze obejmujące uwarunkowania i skutki AS. Dodatkowo zaproponowano również kierunki dla przyszłych badań.

International exchanges programs are one of the most important directions of contemporary European universities development. The quality level of the international exchange of students and academic staff determines not only the quality level of the education, but it also creates directions of the future research through the prism of international cooperation between universities and students. Papers presents research findings on the international exchange students’ mobility under Erasmus+ programme between Polish and Czech universities in 2000 – 2014. The main objective of the research is to identify the most important elements of the Erasmus+ mobility results as advantages and disadvantages of the international cooperation between analyzed countries.

In the growing globalization in the sector of higher education, every school must have a clearly defined strategy on how to recruit and retain international students. Many times these strategies vary among the regions and countries where the students are from, some students need a more personal approach, whereas others prefer a less engaged process. For some students moving to another country or even continent can be a very stressful experience. International students not only have to face a new academic rigor but also many times a new society and culture. The universities that make international students feel welcome contribute greatly to their academic success. International students who have support from a dedicated service can easily immerse into the local society and adapt rapidly. The universities constantly need to work on new strategies that allow students to adapt to the academic environment and familiarize them with administrative procedures and campus life. Access to a committed service that caters to the needs of international students proves that such an engaging approach leads to satisfactory results in students’ success to adapt to a new school and new community. The article analyses best practices, such as orientation specifically targeted at international students, high-quality students’ services, and a successful university Buddy program. Such approaches prove to facilitate the most effective results. The analysis demonstrates that international students adapt better to academic structures and requirements as a consequence of engagement with the offered services. Such strategies allow international students to make the best of their internationalization experience.
W obliczu postępującej globalizacji w sektorze szkolnictwa wyższego każda uczelnia musi mieć jasno określoną strategię pozyskiwania i utrzymania studentów zagranicznych. Bardzo często te strategie są różne w zależności od regionu i kraju, z którego pochodzą studenci. Niektórzy studenci potrzebują bardziej osobistego traktowania, podczas gdy inni wolą mniej zaangażowane podejście. Dla części z nich przeprowadzka do innego kraju lub nawet na inny kontynent może być bardzo stresującym doświadczeniem. Studenci zagraniczni muszą nie tylko skonfrontować się z nowym akademickim rygorem, ale również w wielu wypadkach z nowym otoczeniem i kulturą. Uniwersytety, w których studenci zagraniczni czują się mile widziani, znacznie przyczyniają się do ich sukcesu akademickiego. Studenci zagraniczni korzystający ze wsparcia w postaci usług przeznaczonych specjalnie dla nich mogą łatwiej dostosować się do lokalnej społeczności. Uniwersytety muszą stale pracować nad strategiami ułatwiającymi studentom przystosowanie do środowiska uniwersyteckiego i zapoznanie z procedurami administracyjnymi oraz życiem studenckim. Dostęp do odpowiednich usług, które zaspokajają potrzeby zagranicznych studentów, świadczy o tym, że takie zaangażowane podejście prowadzi do zadowalających rezultatów i ułatwia adaptację do nowej uczelni i nowej społeczności. W artykule przeprowadzono analizę najlepszych praktyk, takich jak dni adaptacyjne dla studentów zagranicznych, wysokiej jakości usługi na rzecz studentów i skuteczny program wsparcia ze strony lokalnych studentów (tzw. „Buddy program”). Takie podejście zapewnia najlepsze wyniki. Analiza pokazuje, że studenci zagraniczni lepiej adaptują się do struktur i wymagań akademickich w wyniku aktywnego korzystania z oferowanych usług. Taka strategia pozwala studentom zagranicznym jak najlepiej wykorzystać doświadczenia w zakresie internacjonalizacji.

W artykule zbadano podejścia zastosowane w celu przyciągnięcia międzynarodowych studentów w trzech krajach leżących na obrzeżach Europy (Europejskiego Obszaru Gospodarczego): Norwegii, Polski i Portugalii. Kraje te, uważane za półperyferyjne pod względem rekrutacji studentów z zagranicy, mają mniejsze tradycje w zakresie mobilności przyjazdowej niż kraje, które są głównymi rekrutującymi i które były przedmiotem wcześniejszych badań dotyczących przyciągania studentów z zagranicy. W artykule przeanalizowano krajowe polityki i strategie, koncentrując się na ich powstawaniu, racjonalnych rozwiązaniach i instrumentach. Badanie ma charakter porównawczy i ma na celu znalezienie podobieństw i różnic w podejściu tych krajów do zmieniającego się globalnego środowiska szkolnictwa wyższego. Głównym wynikiem analiz jest ustalenie, że kraje półperyferyjne wydają się stosować inne strategie i uciekać się do innych przewag komparatywnych niż najwięksi rekrutujący. Wyniki podkreślają potrzebę określenia przez te kraje ich szczególnych zdolności przyciągania i atutów, a także celowego wyboru regionów, w których będą rekrutować studentów.
The paper investigates the approaches employed for attracting international full-degree students in three countries on the periphery of Europe/the European Economic Area: Norway, Poland and Portugal. These countries, considered semi-peripheral regarding international student recruitment, have shorter traditions for incoming mobility than countries that are major recruiters and which have been the focus of previous research on attracting international students. The paper analyses national policies and strategies, focusing on their emergence, rationales and instruments. The study is comparative, aiming to find commonalities and differences in the approaches of these countries further to the changing global environment in higher education. The major finding is that semi-peripheral countries appear to employ different strategies and resort to other comparative advantages than the largest student recruiters, exploiting political, cultural or geographical aspects rather than educational assets. The findings highlight the need for these countries to identify their distinctive attraction capacities and assets, as well as to be purposeful in choosing their target recruitment regions.
