    The article concerns governmental crises and changes in the chancellor’s position that took place in the German Empire in the period between July and November 1917. It was possible to cover this issue thanks to the analysis of articles published in the Krakow daily newspaper “Głos Narodu”. This paper referred to direct correspondents from Berlin, German press agencies, or information from the German press. The author wants to show a few months of tensions in German internal politics and present various behind-the-scenes games of political parties in the government. The situation in the Empire was important for us, Poles, because the year 1917 and the reports from the fronts of World War I gave rise to more and more hopes for regaining independence.

    Modern physical culture was one of the many important processes that have taken over the political, social, and cultural life in Germany in the second half of the 19th century. At the turn of the 19th century in Germany, two big middle-class organizations have been formed to deal with physical activity affairs: the German Gymnastics Association (Deutsche Turnerschaft; the Turnverein) and dynamically-growing English sports. The paper demonstrates the relations between the Turnverein movement and the world of sport in Germany at the beginning of the 20th century. The German Gymnastics Association, an organization founded in the 60s of the 19th century, had long-time achievements initiated by the work of Friedrich Ludwig Jahn. Simultaneously, the world of sport in Germany was concentrated on the newly-founded in 1904 German Olympics Committee – primary organization bringing together several various federations of sport disciplines. It was an organization primarily brought into existence to coordinate the debut appearance of the German Empire in the restored by P. Coubertain Olympic Games.

    The article was devoted to the system of supporting families of soldiers fighting on the front, which was set up in Szczecin – the main city of the Prussian Province of Pomerania. The system was based on the legislation introduced in the Reich at the end of the 19th century. The research aim is to look for the specific nature of the actions undertaken by the authorities of the city as against other cities which also launched such similarities. The first part of the article is devoted to the principles according to which the system of supporting families of soldiers was founded with particular emphasis on its significance for inhabitants of German towns. The second part of the article deals with the practical side of the system, in particular with the forms and organization of the assistance offered by the authorities of Szczecin. According to the regulations included in the legislation, the state guaranteed allowances to the wife, children and other family members maintained by a conscripted soldier, but certain conditions had to be fulfilled. Allowances were financed by the budgets of the communes and counties with a reservation that the sums assigned for this purpose would be returned to them from the central budget. In the first days of August the authorities of Szczecin started to pay out the allowances guaranteed by the regulation. They also decided to pay to families of soldiers optional city allowances, which, despite the fact of being provided for in the regulation, were not reimbursed by the state. Those allowances were complemented with additional forms of assistance financed by the special civil budget and the city military social care established at the end of August 1914. In terms of organization, the association referred to as the National Service of Women, set up in Szczecin upon the Berlin pattern in the first days of the war, played a major role. In practice, the legislators’ intention to introduce allowances financed by the state was not carried out. The financial aid was financed mainly from the communes’ budgets and they would not have supported soldiers’ families properly without the allowances financed by the city. Additionally, new regulations enforced from the beginning of 1916 converted the allowances into a form of social aid for families of soldiers from the lowest social strata.

    The publication constitutes an analysis of the activation of Poles – citizens of the Kingdom of Prussia and the German Empire residing in the province of West Prussia (Eastern Pomerania) in the elections to the German parliament (Reichstag) in the 19th century (until 1914). On the one hand, it was demonstrated that every contemporary citizen of the German state had equal rights irrespective of their nationality; on the other hand, the author presented the process of shaping the national consciousness of Poles using the law to organize a network of their own electoral committees and elect their Polish representatives to the legislative institutions of that state, in the national rivalry with the German society in Eastern Pomerania. Statistically, a successive increase in activation in this area and its specific results in particular electoral districts were presented, depending not only on nationality statistics, but also on the organization of the electoral campaign and the level of the increasing social, national and political awareness. The article presents the organizational manifestations of the national independence of the Polish society of Eastern Pomerania, which was one of the basic factors justifying the inclusion of this region within the boundaries of the reborn Polish state.

    Od połowy XIX wieku i pojawienia się nowoczesnego życia politycznego, wschodniopruska wieś znajdowała się w dużej mierze pod kontrolą pruskiej Partii Konserwatywnej (Konservative Partei), a potem jej następczyni Niemieckiej Partii Konserwatywnej (Deutschkonservative Partei), która, jak wskazuje jej nazwa, miała charakter bardziej ogólnonarodowy, pomimo silnych pruskich korzeni. Mocna pozycja konserwatystów w Prusach Wschodnich nie była w zasadzie niczym nowym, jednak często przesłaniała istnienie innych partii politycznych. Celem niniejszej pracy będzie zatem wskazanie w jaki sposób konserwatyści zdołali utrzymać swoje wpływy na wschodniopruskiej wsi, mimo, że socjaldemokraci przyjęli ofensywną strategię, aby do niej dotrzeć. Najpierw skoncentrujemy się na dominacji ruchu konserwatywnego na wschodniopruskiej wsi, następnie na szybkim wzroście popularności SPD i wreszcie na ambiwalencji drobnego oraz średniego chłopstwa między tymi dwiema przeciwnymi opcjami.

    The Slavs came from the steppes of Eastern Europe to Balkan Peninsula in the firsthalf of the 1st millennium A.D. At the turn of the 6th century some of the tribes,looking for new places to settle, arrived at the area between the Elbe and Oder– occupying an area abandoned by Germanic tribes, who moved to the ScandinavianPeninsula – and were called Wends. Southern Slavs invaded and settledin Lusatia and reached the Saale. In the middle of the 9th century there were almost 50 Slavic settlements in Lusatia under the rule of Prince Derwan, an ally of Samo. At the turn of the 10th century, the Sorbs came under the influence of the Great Moravia (822–895), which adopted Christianity as early as the 9th century(831), and then Bohemia (895–1018), and from 1002 Poland (Christian since 965) tried to take control over the area. Boleslaw I of Poland invaded Lusatia and won it in the Peace of Bautzen (1018). In the Reformation period, Sorbian peasants and common people massively supported the teachings of Martin Luther, although he was opposed to translating the Bible into Slavic. Evangelicalism proved to be beneficial for the Sorbian national culture. It influenced its revival and strengthening. The University of Wittenberg became Sorbian cultural center, with its rector between years 1559–1576 being a doctor of Sorbian origin – Kasper Pauker from Bautzen. What strengthened the Sorbian national identity at the turn of the 19th century was the activity of Moravian Church (seeking to transform Lutheranism in people’s church), which was then settled in Upper Lusatia in Herrnhut, Niesky and Kleinwelka. At the turn of the 20th century the number of Sorbs in Germany decreased to about 157 000 people, out of whom as many as 10 100 lived outside Lusatia (including 4147 in Saxony – but without Lower Lusatia, 2687 in Westphal ia, 1521 in Rhineland, 847 in Berlin and 898 in other areas of the German Empire). The language widely used in Lusatia was Sorbian with its Lower and Upper dialect. The basis of the national activities of the Sorbs in Germany was “Serbian House” founded on 26 September 1904 in Bautzen to serve as a library, museum, bank, bookshop and publisher. The outbreak of World War I in the summer of 1914 gave hope to the Slavs to establish their own countries.

В конце пятого и шестого веков некоторые из этих племен, ища новых мест для поселения, прибыли в районе между Эльбой и Одрой – занимая территорию заброшенную германскими племенами, которые переселились в Скандинавский полуостров – и назывались Вендами (Sorben). Южные славяне вторглись и поселился в Лужице и достигли реки Зале [Saale]. В Лужице (южное Полабье) в середине девятого века были почти 50 славянских городов, которых правитель, князь Дерван, признавал начальство Государства Само. А в конце девятого и десятого веков сербы нашлись под влиянием Великоморавской державы (822–895) – которая приняла христианство еще в девятом веке (831) и чешской (895–1018) – а с 1002 польское государство (христианское с 965 г.) пыталось взять контроль над территорией. Болеслав Храбрый отправлялся в Лужицу и получил их в Будишинском мире (1018). Он повлиял на возрождение и укрепление. Центром лужицкой культуры стал университет в Виттенберге, ректором которого в годы 1559–1576 был врач лужицкого происхождения Каспер Паукериз Баутцен. На укрепление лужицкого национального самосознания на рубеже восемнадцатого и девятнадцатого веков влияние имела деятельность братьев моравских (стремящихся превратить лютеранство в народную церковь), поселившихся в Верхней Лужицы в Охранове, Нижнем и Малом Велкове. На рубеже веков число лужичан в Германии снизилось до примерно 157 000 человек, из которых больше чем 10 100 проживали за пределами Лужицы (из которых 4147 в Саксонии – но без Нижней Лужицы, 2687 в Вестфалии, 1521 в Рейнланде, 847 в Берлине и 898 в других областях имперского германского рейха). На Лужице широко использовался лужицкий язык, прежде всего диалекты нижний и верхнелужицкий. Основой национальных деятельности лужичан в Германии был основан в 26 сентября 1904, в Баутцене – «Сербский дом», в котором находились библиотека, музей, народный банк, библиотека, издательство и типография. Начало пер вой мировой войны летом 1914 года было для славян надеждой на создание своего собственного национального государства.

    The paper discusses a scheme for a landing operation in the Kaiser Wilhelm Canal area (German Kaiser-Wilhelm-Kanal, from 1948 the Nord-Ostsee-Kanal, the Kiel Canal in international terminology), whose aim was to capture and destroy the Germanbuilt transportation route that connected the Baltic Sea with the North Sea. The canal bore a strategic importance after the outbreak of World War I, as the German navy had to operate both in the North Sea against its main adversary, the British fleet, and to ensure Germany’s strategic control in the Baltic. The scheme, which has received little attention in literature to date, was developed after the outbreak of World War I, in the autumn of 1914, by Captain 2nd Rank (Commander) Alexander Bubnov, an officer in the Staff of the Commander-in-Chief of the Imperial Russian Army, Grand Duke Nicholas Nikolaevich. The article proposes an analysis of the assumptions of Bubnov’s scheme, the question of who it was inspired by, and discusses the reasons why the scheme was not implemented, also in the context of the cooperation between the Allies (Russia and Great Britain) at the beginning of the war.

    Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie podstaw porządku prawnego obowiązujących na terenach kolonialnych Cesarstwa Niemieckiego. W pierwszych dwóch częściach artykułu przedstawiono uwarunkowania międzynarodowe dla rozwoju niemieckich kolonii oraz podstawy prawne ich powstania. W trzeciej części omówiono status prawnoustrojowy, jaki posiadały one w niemieckim porządku prawnym. Szczegółowo przeanalizowano przede wszystkim rozwiązania prawne dotyczące problematyki stanów nadzwyczajnych. W czwartej części omówiono natomiast kwestie prawne związane z utratą kolonii. W artykule analizie poddano w pierwszej kolejności postanowienia Konstytucji Rzeszy z 1871 roku, które znalazły zastosowanie podczas tworzenia obszarów kolonialnych. Omówiono także inne akty prawne. Szczegółowo przeanalizowano również rozkazy cesarskie dotyczące problematyki stanów nadzwyczajnych. W opracowaniu wykorzystano także dorobek niemieckojęzycznej doktryny, która szczegółowo zajmowała się poszczególnymi zagadnieniami prawnymi.
    The aim of this article is to present the basis of the legal order in force in the German Empire colonial areas. The first two parts of the article outline the international conditions for the development of German colonies, and the legal basis of their establishment. The third part discusses the legal status they had in the German legal order. Here the author thoroughly analyses the legal solutions employed for the states of emergency. The fourth part presents the legal issues concerning the loss of colonies. The article includes the analysis of the provisions of the German Empire Constitution of 1871, which were applied when the colonial areas were formed. The paper also discusses other legal acts. Furthermore, the emperor’s orders for declaring the states of emergency were part of the detailed analysis. The paper also explored the attainment of German doctrine, which studied the particular legal issues in depth.

    Hutten-Czapskis Denkschrift über die Zustände in Russisch-Polen nährte in den Führungszirkeln des Deutschen Kaiserreichs die Hoffnungen, die polnische Bevölkerung werde sich im Falle eines deutsch-russischen Krieges auf die deutsche Seite stellen und so den Vormarsch deutscher Truppen erheblich begünstigen. Das Anliegen des deutsch-polnischen Adeligen, einen Ausgleich zwischen Deutschen und Polen zu initiieren, lag zwar nach wie vor in weiter Ferne, doch schien ein deutsches Entgegenkommen Anfang der 1890er-Jahre durchaus möglich zu sein. Dieser „Frühling” in den deutsch-polnischen Beziehungen war indes nur von kurzer Dauer. Sichtbar wird zudem, welch großes Interesse die deutsche Heerführung um den preußischen Generalstabschef Alfred von Schlieffen den innerpolnischen Auseinandersetzungen entgegenbrachte. Hutten-Czapski schilderte die harten Depolonisierungsmaßnahmen der zarischen Verwaltung ungeschminkt und zeigte so das Konfliktpotenzial im Land östlich der Weichsel auf, das sich das Deutsche Reich zunutze machen konnte. Schlieffen zeigte sich derart beeindruckt, dass er Hutten-Czapski weitere Fragenkataloge zukommen ließ, um die Stimmung in Russisch-Polen evaluieren zu können.
    Bogdan Graf von Hutten-Czapski’s memorandum regarding the conditions in the Russian partition fuelled hopes in the leadership circles of the German Empire that the Polish population would side with Germany in the event of war with Russia, and thus significantly facilitate the entry of German troops. The PolishGerman nobleman was far from initiating an agreement between the Germans and the Poles, but the possibility of German concessions seemed quite likely in the early 1890s. This „thaw” in Polish-German relations, however, was short-lived. It is also visible how much the German command, centered around the Prussian Chief of the General Staff, Alfred von Schlieffen, was interested in intra-Polish disputes. Hutten-Czapski bluntly described the harsh depolonization measures of the tsarist administration and thus showed the potential for conflict east of the Vistula, which the German Reich could have exploited. Schlieffen was so impressed that he sent Hutten-Czapski further questionnaires to assess the mood in the Russian partition.
    Memorandum Bogdana Grafa von Hutten-Czapskiego w sprawie sytuacji w zaborze rosyjskim podsyciło w kręgach decyzyjnych Cesarstwa Niemieckiego nadzieje na to, że ludność polska stanie po stronie niemieckiej w przypadku wojny z Rosją, a tym samym znacznie ułatwi wkroczenie wojsk niemieckich. Polsko- -niemiecki szlachcic był daleki od propozycji zainicjowania porozumienia między Niemcami a Polakami, ale możliwość niemieckich ustępstw wydawała się całkiem prawdopodobna na początku lat dziewięćdziesiątych XIX w. Ta „odwilż” w stosunkach polsko-niemieckich była jednak krótkotrwała. Widać również, jak bardzo niemieckie dowództwo, skupione wokół pruskiego szefa sztabu generalnego Alfreda von Schlieffena, interesowało się wewnątrzpolskimi sporami. Hutten-Czapski bez ogródek opisał surowe środki depolonizacyjne carskiej administracji i tym samym pokazał potencjał konfliktu w kraju na wschód od Wisły, który Rzesza Niemiecka mogła wykorzystać. Schlieffen był pod takim wrażeniem, że wysłał Hutten-Czapskiemu kolejne kwestionariusze w celu oceny nastrojów w zaborze rosyjskim.

    In the early 1780s, the St. Petersburg court decided to establish a new Russian diplomatic post in Frankfurt am Main; the mission in the German Reich was entrusted to a young diplomat, Nikolai P. Rumyantsev. Attempts to clarify the purpose of establishing a new legation have been made since mid-nineteenth century. Prussian historians wanted to see it as an instrument of support for the Berlin court, Austrian authors, on the other hand, the Viennese Burg. According to Russian historiography, on the other hand, the establishment of a diplomatic post in Frankfurt was to manifest the achievement of a significant position in the Reich by the St. Petersburg court. These judgements were pronounced without considering the primary source: the instructions received by the minister. The article is based precisely on that Russian diplomatic correspondence stored at the Foreign Policy Archive of Imperial Russia in Moscow. An analysis of the instructions sent to Rumyantsev proves that Russian plans for expansion in the Holy Roman Empire, to gain supremacy over the “Third Germany” i.e. the lesser and middle states of the Reich, were but political wishful thinking. The Russian domination in the empire, especially over the lesser states of the Reich, was completely unattainable for the empress. The expansion model tried in Courland, Poland and Sweden did not work in Germany.

    A National “Struggle for Survival”? – The Badeni Crisis of 1897 in Cisleithania’s German-language PressThis article observes the role of Cisleithania’s (i.e. the Austrian “half” of the Austro-Hungarian dual monarchy) Germanlanguage press in the so-called Badeni Crisis of 1897 which was triggered by the issuance of two language ordinances designed to make Czech, together with German, an equally valid language in the inner administration of the Crownlands of Bohemia and Moravia. By comparing the reporting style of two newspapers from different regions – the Viennese newspaper Neue Freie Presse and the Bohemian newspaper Prager Tagblatt – this essay explores how interpretations of this serious political crisis differed in the periphery and the centre of the Habsburg empire. The author shows that, even though the Badeni Crisis directly affected mainly German-speaking Bohemians, the reporting style of the Prager Tagblatt was less sensationalist and its choice of words less nationalistic and militaristic than the coverage of the same events by its Viennese counterpart, the Neue Freie Presse. In a second step, reasons for this surprising discrepancy are traced. Narodowa „walka o przetrwanie”? Kryzys Badeniego 1897 roku w niemieckojęzycznej prasie PrzedlitawiiArtykuł poświęcony jest roli niemieckojęzycznej prasy w Przedlitawii (czyli austriackiej „połówce” Monarchii Austro-Węgierskiej) podczas tzw. kryzysu Badeniego w 1897 roku, wywołanego przez wydanie dwujęzycznych ordynacji, co miało sprawić, że język czeski, obok niemieckiego, stanie się równorzędnym językiem wewnętrznej administracji Królestw Czech i Moraw. Poprzez porównanie sposobu przekazu informacji w ukazujących się w dwóch regionach gazetach – wiedeńskiej „Neue Freie Presse” i czeskiej „Prager Tagblatt” - autor docieka, w czym interpretacja tego poważnego kryzysu politycznego różniła się na peryferiach i w centrum imperium Habsburgów. Pokazuje, że choć kryzys Badeniego bezpośrednio dotknął przede wszystkim niemieckojęzycznych Czechów, to ton przekazu w „Prager Tagblatt” był mniej sensacyjny, mniej nacjonalistyczny i militarystyczny w doborze słownictwa, niż to miało miejsce w relacjach o tych samych wydarzeniach, które ukazywały się w wiedeńskim odpowiedniku gazety, „Neue Freie Presse”. Następnie autor prześledził powody tej zaskakującej rozbieżności.

    Artykuł dotyczy zagadnienia stosunków najstarszego władztwa piastowskiego w X w. do cesarstwa Ottonów. Saski kronikarz Thietmar z Merseburga w swej relacji o bitwie stoczonej w 972 r. przez polskiego księcia Mieszka I z saskim margrabią Hodonem napisał (lib. II, cap. 29), że Mieszko był „wierny cesarzowi i płacił mu trybut aż do rzeki Warty” („inperatori fidelis tributumque usque in Vurta fluvium solvens”). Zdanie to było od dawna przedmiotem sprzecznych interpretacji. Historycy niemieccy przyjmują przeważnie, że chodzi o całą zachodnią część władztwa piastowskiego (patrząc od zachodu). Historycy polscy natomiast próbowali zawsze zminimalizować znaczenie trybutu i wykazywali w związku z tym, że chodziło o jakieś cząstkowe terytorium, przy czym przeważnie wskazywano Pomorze (które leżało jednak już za Wartą) lub niewielki obszar domniemanego plemienia Lubuszan (u ujścia Warty do Odry). Autor artykułu, nawiązując do pomysłów niektórych historyków niemieckich, stara się dowieść, że dla właściwego zrozumienia rozważanego zdania trzeba je interpretować z punktu widzenia Mieszka. Chodziło zatem o całość jego władztwa, patrząc od jego centrum do Warty, i.e. rzeki pełniącej tu rolę granicy zewnętrznej. Na rzecz takiej wykładni świadczy fakt, że trybuty nakładano wówczas z zasady na całe państwa lub ludy, nie zaś na ich sztucznie wyodrębnione części. Warta rzeczywiście stanowiła orientacyjną granicę dzielącą władztwo Piastów od Pomorza. Proponowana interpretacja znakomicie pasuje do kontekstu relacji Thietmara. Tło starcia Mieszka z Hodonem stanowiła ekspansja polska na Pomorze. Komentarz, że Mieszko płacił trybut z terytorium do granicznej Warty, służył wyjaśnieniu, że Hodo miał prawo zaatakować wiernego cesarzowi księcia, skoro ten wykroczył poza wskazaną granicę. Stosunek trybutarny nawiązany został zapewne w 963 r., kiedy to (zgodnie z relacją Thietmara, którą historycy polscy często kwestionują) margrabia Gero narzucił Mieszkowi cesarskie zwierzchnictwo. Można to sobie wyobrazić w ten sposób, że gdy Gero po zwycięstwach nad Łużyczanami zbliżał się do Odry, zaniepokojony Mieszko sam mu się poddał i zaoferował trybut.
    The article is about relations between the oldest Piast rulers (tenth century) and the Ottonian Empire. In his account of the battle waged in 972 by the Polish Duke Mieszko I and the Saxon Margrave Hodo, the Saxon chronicler Thietmar of Merseburg wrote (II, 29) that Mieszko was “loyal to the emperor and paid him a tribute all the way to the river Warta” (inperatori fidelis tributumque usque in Vurta fluvium solvens). This sentence has been for long the object of contradictory interpretations. As a rule, German historians maintain that it refers to the entire Western part of the Piast dominion (looking from the West). On the other hand, Polish historians always attempted to minimalize the significance of the tribute and consequently indicated that the chronicler had in mind a certain fragmentary territory; as a rule, they pointed to Pomerania (which, however, was located already beyond the Warta) or a small region of the supposed Lubuszanie tribe (at the mouth of the Warta flowing into the Odra). By referring to conceptions launched by certain German historians the author of the article tries to prove that a proper comprehension of the examined sentence calls for its interpretation from the viewpoint of Mieszko. In other words, it pertains to his whole dominion, seen from its centre towards the Warta, i.e. a river playing the part of an outer frontier. Such an interpretation is supported by the fact that at the time tributes were, as a rule, imposed on a whole state or a people and not their artificially distinguished parts. True, the Warta did constitute a rough boundary separating the Piast state from Pomerania. The proposed approach matches the context of the Thietmar account. The background of the clash between Mieszko and Hodo was Polish expansion in Pomerania. The commentary claiming that Mieszko paid a tribute from a territory up to Warta, a frontier river, was used to explain that Hodo was entitled to attack a duke loyal to the emperor since the former had crossed the boundary. The tribute-based relation was established probably in 963 when (according to Thietmar’s account, often questioned by Polish historians), margrave Gero imposed imperial supremacy over Mieszko I. Presumably, when after a victory over the Lusatians Gero moved towards the Odra, alarmed Mieszko voluntarily surrendered and offered a tribute.

    W artykule podjęto próbę odpowiedzi na pytanie, co sprawiło, że chłopi niemieccy chwycili za broń i postanowili szukać poprawy swojego losu poprzez udział w Wielkiej Wojnie Chłopskiej. Niniejsze rozważania należy zacząć od przedstawienia sytuacji, w jakiej znajdowało się ówczesne Święte Cesarstwo Rzymskie Narodu Niemieckiego – mowa o rozdrobnieniu politycznym. Było ono przyczyną odmiennej w różnych rejonach Niemiec kondycji najniższych warstw społeczeństwa feudalnego. Autor stara się pisać skomplikowaną sytuację życiową włościan i ubogich mieszczan już u progu XVI stulecia. Ludzie wywodzący się z tych warstw społecznych w największej liczbie zasilali insurekcje chłopskie. Przedstawiono niewątpliwy związek między powtarzającymi się co jakiś czas na terenie Niemiec rebeliami chłopskimi a hasłami o charakterze religijnym, które cyklicznie zapisywano na powstańczych sztandarach, szukając w nich usprawiedliwienia dla prób wyzwolenia się spod feudalnego ucisku. Analizie poddano również wpływ, jaki wywarła reformacja protestancka i pojawienie się nowych poglądów religijnych na ruch chłopski. Szczególne znaczenie – gdy mowa o stworzeniu podwalin ideologicznych Wielkiej Wojny Chłopskiej – miała postać Tomasza Müntzera. Jego poglądy religijno-społeczne starano się przedstawić w sposób jak najbardziej dokładny, przeciwstawiając je jednocześnie przekonaniom Marcina Lutra. Dało to możliwość porównania poglądów obu reformatorów, zauważenia dzielących ich różnic nie tylko w podejściu do porządku społecznego, ale także doktryny religijnej. Poglądy Tomasza Müntzera bez wątpienia miały kluczowe znaczenie dla zasięgu terytorialnego i masowego udziału chłopów w insurekcji chłopskiej z lat 1524-1526. Autor przedstawił również pokrótce przebieg całego zrywu chłopskiego wraz ze sposobem organizacji zgrupowań chłopskich i zasięgiem terytorialnym insurekcji, a także metodami walki obu wrogich sobie obozów – chłopskiego i feudalnego.
    The article attempts to answer the question of what caused German peasants to take up arms to try to improve their lives during the Great Peasants’ War. This would be impossible without presenting the situation of political fragmentation in which the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation then found itself. The fragmentation was the political reason for the different situation of the lowest layers of feudal society in different regions of Germany. The author portrays the complicated living situation of the peasants and poor townsfolk at the dawn of the 16th century. People from these social strata fed the peasant insurrections in the greatest numbers. An undeniable link is presented between the recurring peasant rebellions in Germany and the religious slogans which appeared on the insurgents’ banners as justification for struggles for liberation from feudal oppression. The impact of the Protestant Reformation and the emergence of new religious views on the peasant movement has also been analysed. A person of particular importance in laying the ideological foundations for the Great Peasants’ War was Thomas Müntzer. The article tries to present his religious and social views as accurately as possible, while contrasting them with Martin Luther’s ideas. This provided an opportunity to compare the views of the two reformers, noting the differences between them not only in their approach to the social order, but also to religious doctrine. Thomas Müntzer’s views were undoubtedly central to the territorial extent and mass participation of the peasants in the revolt of 1524-1526. Furthermore, the course of the entire peasant uprising is briefly outlined, including how peasant groups were organised and the territorial extent of the insurrection, as well as the methods of struggle between the two hostile camps – peasant and feudal.

    Artykuł traktuje o partycypacji „stanu baronów” (Herrenstand, Freiherrenstand) w zgromadzeniach reprezentanckich Rzeszy Niemieckiej oraz krajów dziedzicznych Habsburgów od XVI do XVIII w. Dokonano w nim wartościowania udziału baronów w urzędach i najważniejszych gremiach Świętego Cesarstwa Rzymskiego Narodu Niemieckiego, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem pierwszych, najważniejszych urzędów w takich instancjach, jak sąd kameralny Rzeszy, rada nadworna Rzeszy, sąd dworski, a z drugiej strony przedstawiono rolę, jaką odegrali baronowie w życiu urzędniczym ziem dziedzicznych. Starano się w ten sposób, poprzez połączenie obu wątków, zwrócić uwagę na trudną do przecenienia wartość tej grupy dla istnienia państwa oraz wskazać jej szerokie aspiracje i zaangażowanie w życie publiczne. Taka bowiem samorealizacja odegrała niebagatelną rolę w wyznaczaniu kierunków polityki cesarzy, na trzy stulecia, tworząc częściową supremację baronów na urzędach centralnych i lokalnych.
    The article deals with the participation of the "state of barons" (Herrenstand-, Freiherrenstand) in the representative assemblies of the German Reich and the Habsburg Hereditary Countries, which collectively constituted the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation in the period of the 16th-18th centuries. Similarly, the participation of barons in the offices of the most important bodies has been evaluated including such instances as the Reich Chamber Court, Reichs Court Council, Court Court, and on the other hand, the role played by the barons in the clerical life of the Hereditary Lands. In this way, by combining the two images, we attempt to draw attention to the value of this group, which is difficult to overstate, for the existence of the state and indicate its broad aspirations and involvement in the public life of the state. For such self-realization played a significant role in the directions of the emperors' policy for three centuries, creating a partial supremacy of barons in both central and local offices.

    After the Austro-Hungarian compromise in 1867 the Galician parliament and provincial administration gained extensive privileges and prerogatives, especially in education. Galicia was the first crownland that had a school council, which was sanctioned already in 1867. After almost a century the ongoing process of Germanization ended as in the following years the majority of German speaking public officials were replaced by Poles and the Polish language became the main administrativ language and the main language of instruction in school. The article describes changes in the school system and shows the role of the Polish language in primary and secondary education during this so-called epoch of Galician autonomy. A comparison of historical documents and memories from schooldays from former Galician school children allows a realistic insight on the role which the Polish language played in the lives of young Galicians. The analysis shows that the Polonisation of the Galician school system effected the development of Polish national consciousness within young Galicians very slowly and not until the beginning of the 20th century.
