    Fado from Coimbra and World Heritage On 27 November 2011 fado – a traditional Portuguese music – was added to the World Site of Intangible Heritage UNESCO, which provided an opportunity to create this article. The following publication presents a history and origin of fado: the meaning of its name and its linguistic provenience. Article shows roots of this genre of music – its evolution from an African dance lundum to another called “fado”; its migration from Brazil to Portugal; its turning into a song full of melancholy and longing. The sense of Portuguese’s beloved word “saudade” is being explained, as well as the variations of fado music that have led it to the concert halls in the 21st century. The article, farther more, describes two common variations of this kind of music, i.e. fado from Coimbra and fado from Lisbon, concentrating on main differences, such as their subject matter, structure of pieces, key and manner of performance, the source of which can be found in their origin. The text considers whether “fado” is a proper name of a song of Coimbra, or not. The aim of the article is to introduce a dispute about the “real” fado, that has been going on between followers of both trends for years and to answer a question why the fado from Lisbon was added to the UNESCO list.

Stosownie do tego pierwszą część opracowania wypełni ogólny rys historyczny gatunku, drugą część natomiast poświęcimy omówieniu poetyki pieśni fado – rozpatrywanej od strony tekstu, cech muzycznych, z uwzględnieniem także roli najwybitniejszych śpiewaków.Fado – the Voice of PortugalSUMMARYFado – a characteristic genre of Portugal music which dates back to the mid-19th century – has gained importance and popularity for a several dozen years, not only in Portugal but in many other places in the world as well. Fado songs emanate with an emotional load and symbolic message especially due to the interpretations of expressive performers (such as Amalia Rodrigues or Mariza). Fado is, at the same time, one of the clearest genres in international circles of the world music and at the same time it is an image of the cultural identity of Portugal. It coexists with other genres of performative musical-poetic art, both popular and artistic ones; moreover as the matrix of identity of this country it is widespread among Portugal diaspora. The article presents the history of fado songs and their poetic-musical specifi city. The fi rst part of the study concerns historical description of the genre, the second part discusses the poetics of fado song – from the angle of its verbal text, music features, taking into consideration the most famous singers.

    The main objective of the article is to analyze the socio-political situation and the other factors determining the development of music types such as Fado and Copla during the dictatorship times in Spain and Portugal. These genres were used for the political and propaganda purposes. Many artists like for example Lola Flores or Amália Rodrigues have become famous exactly during the regime times, however, their real success can be measured with the arrival of democracy. Copla which represents the image of Franco’s Spain has been replaced by some new music genres and it has never been reborn as it had happened in the case of Fado. This Portuguese music genre was a subject of changes starting from 60’s. Significant modifications have been done in both: lyrics and accompaniment; Fado survived the anti-Fado period (1974-1975) and from the 90’s until present experiences an ongoing rebirth. Studies on Fado’s and Copla’s popularity may also prove to be crucial in understanding the phenomenon of transculturalism. All the factors that boosted the process of internationalization of this music in the twenty-first century should become an object of a multifaceted analysis.

    Opis:
    How to translate culturally infused words is indeed the question that becomes more complicated as the cultural turn in Translation Studies (TS) takes place. The task for translators has become not only to make a linguistic transfer but a cultural one as well. In this essay I shall discuss how to deal with some Portuguese words that may be regarded as crucial to defining Portuguese culture. I will focus on words and terms that ask for an understanding and reception mainly at the cultural level. One should keep in mind that knowledge is the key here, as it will be necessary to know something about both source and target culture to find out not only the best solution in translation for these words, but to understand them as well. I will study the process of translation as a process of making certain decisions. I will try to show not only that direct translation is complex, but also that the way we translate those words also differs between a historical book and a comedy film, between a poem translation and a juvenile book translation, etc. As a methodology I shall study this cultureoriented translatological phenomenon under the dominant in translations (as defined by Anna Bednarczyk), the elements that determine translation (loosely based on Werner Koller’s ideas), and the great classic Jiří Levý and his vision of translation as a process of making decisions. I will present different paradigms in order to work out the possible solutions.
    Sposób tłumaczenia słów nacechowanych kulturowo jest zadaniem, które skomplikowało się wraz z tzw. zwrotem kulturowym w translatoryce. Wraz z nim zadanie tłumaczy wykroczyło poza transfer językowy, obejmując również transfer kulturowy. W tym eseju skupię się na strategiach przekładoznawczych, które można zastosować dla wybranych portugalskich słów, kluczowych dla zdefiniowania portugalskiej kultury. Będą to słowa i terminy, które wymagają zrozumienia i recepcji przede wszystkim na poziomie kulturowym. Bez posiadania wiedzy o realiach portugalskich, która jest w tym wypadku kluczem do translatorskiego sukcesu, niemożliwe będzie zrozumienie, a co za tym idzie i przełożenie danych słów i terminów. Postaram się prześledzić proces przekładu jako proces podejmowania decyzji. Postaram się również wykazać, że nie tylko bezpośrednie tłumaczenie jest procesem złożonym, ale konkretne wybory są również determinowane przez gatunkową przynależność danego tekstu. Metodologicznie odwołam się do konceptu dominanty (w ujęciu Anny Bednarczyk), do czynników determinujących przekład (swobodnie opierając się na pomysłach Wernera Kollera) oraz do klasycznego modelu przekładu jako procesu podejmowania decyzji (Jiří Levý). W tym duchu zaprezentowane zostaną paradygmaty celem wypracowania możliwych rozwiązań translatologicznych.

    Kwestia kultywowania i eksponowania dziedzictwa niematerialnego w przestrzeni miejskiej, obecnie silnie stechnicyzowanej, jest rzadko poruszana w literaturze. Zastanawiający jest szczególnie sposób prezentowania tradycji umożliwiający ich poznanie turystom, którzy często są istotnym czynnikiem zachęcającym depozytariuszy do kultywowania zwyczajów. Autorki zakładają, że w tym celu w przestrzeni turystycznej miast powinny pojawić się stosowne obiekty, które byłyby elementem nie tylko przestrzennego, lecz także semiotycznego zagospodarowania miasta. W artykule zagadnienie to rozważano, analizując przykłady snycerstwa w Konjicu i fado w Lizbonie. Dostrzeżono tendencję przenoszenia się zwyczajów do przestrzeni medialnej i wirtualnej przy jednoczesnym zaniku ich obecności w przestrzeni fizycznej, rekompensowanym powstawaniem atrakcji turystycznych. Fado ponadto rozbrzmiewa w przestrzeniach turystycznych poza Lizboną, co pozbawia je oryginalności kontekstu terytorialnego. Płaskorzeźbione produkty drewniane z Konjica przechodzą za to transformację, dostosowując się do gustów potencjalnych nabywców: tracą ornamentykę typową dla regionu, w którym wciąż są wytwarzane, lecz przekształcenia te są immanentnym elementem zauważalnym od początku rozwoju tej tradycji. Nowe wzornictwo staje się jedynie signum temporis, który zapewnia trwanie przestrzeni semiotycznej konjickiej kultury.
    The issue of cultivating and showcasing intangible heritage in urban space, which currently is heavily technicised, is rarely addressed in the literature. Particularly intriguing is the way of presenting traditions to enable their understanding by tourists, who are often a significant factor in encouraging heritage bearers to cultivate their customs. The authors assume that for this purpose, appropriate objects should appear in the tourist space of cities, ones that would constitute not only elements of the city’s spatial development, but also its semiotic elements. The article considered this issue by analysing the examples of woodcarving in Konjic and fado in Lisbon. A tendency to transfer of customs to the media and virtual space and their absence in physical space were noted, compensated by the emergence of tourist attractions. Fado is also present in tourist spaces outside Lisbon, which deprives it of the originality of territorial context. Carved wooden products from Konjic are transformed, adapting to the tastes of potential buyers: they lose the ornamentation typical of the region where they are still produced, but these transformations are an inherent element noticeable from the beginning of the development of this tradition. The new design becomes only a signum temporis, ensuring the continuity of the semiotic space of Konjic culture.
