Opis:
The drastic increase in the emission of CO2 (carbon dioxide) during the last 30 years caused by fossil fuel combustion has been identified as the major reason for the climate change. Demand for fossil fuels has begun to decline in the developed world, however, demand in developing countries has been rising and will continue to rise. India in its developing phase has been risen as one of the major emitting nations since they hugely rely on fossil fuels. And opting alternate energy sources wouldn’t suffice for meeting the obligatory values of emission. While the global frameworks for climate change demands for limiting the temperature rise within 2 °C, more mitigation technologies other than renewable energy and energy efficiency are searched for, where Carbon Capture & Sequestration pitch in. In this paper we discuss about the capacity of CCS as a climate mitigation tool and additionally evaluates the feasibility of implementation in Indian market.

Many large cities in Europe are currently trying to reduce the amount of harmful substances for the residents. Road transport is also an important source of air pollution. One way to reduce pollutant production is to operate more environmentally friendly vehicles. The paper analyses data obtained during practical tests of a hybrid vehicle in urban traffic. The individual components of the exhaust gases are calculated in g/km and they are compared with the values for conventional vehicle propulsion. The data was obtained through a commercially available exhaust gas analyzer and a calculated amount of emissions produced from available data from the engine control unit. The results shown that using of this type of propulsion has its importance in cities with increased air pollution. During urban operation, the hybrid-powered vehicle was powered by an electric engine up to 67.70% (75.40% of the time). As a result of operating such a vehicle in the city, emissions of CO2, HC and NOx are significantly lower.

Adsorption of carbon dioxide on activated carbons has become extremely interesting in the field of energy and environment. Activated carbon is either used as a model to understand sorption processes on coals as a part of research on CO2 geological storage/Enhanced Coalbed Methane or as an adsorbent for processes such as natural gas treatment or CO2 separation from flue gas. The paper presents results of high-pressure CO2 sorption at the temperature of 318K on two similar activated carbons (Filtrasorb 400 and WAZ 0.6-2.4 mm) where one sample of WAZ was not subjected to any pretreatment procedure. Experimental results were fitted with three parameter Langmuir and therefore it was possible to calculate CO2 adsorbed phase densities. The WAZ activated carbon has a slightly lower sorption even though it was pretreated with the same procedure. The untreated sample of WAZ exhibited sorption which was lower over 15%. Calculated adsorbed phase densities differ between the activated carbons and the lowest value was obtained for the untreated WAZ sample (21.0 mol/dm3).

The aim of the study was to recognise the accumulation of organic carbon (SOC) in the soils of Polish grasslands (GL) and to consider the possibility of increasing its sequestration in these soils. The Tiurin method (mineral soils) and the mass loss method (soil of organic origin) were used. It was found that: (i) the average SOC content of mineral soils is 2.44% and of organic soils - 10.42%; (ii) according to the Polish criteria, approximately 84% of GL mineral soils are classified as classes with high and very high SOC content, and over 15% and 1% - in classes with medium and low SOC content, respectively; more than 99% of organic soils belong to two classes with the highest SOC content and less than 1% to the class with an average content; (iii) according to the European Soil Bureau, the share of GL mineral soils with a high SOC content is slightly over 4%, medium - slightly over 47%, and low and very low - around 50%; for organic soils they are 67, 29, and 4%, respectively; (iv) the reserves of organic carbon in the 0-30 cm layer on the entire surface of GL soils amount to 412.7 Tg of SOC. There is considerable scope for increasing the SOC stock in meadow-pasture soils.

Opis:
Silk is a distinctive and significant category of natural structural protein fiber. With a remarkable structure and versatility, silk has emerged as a topic of scientific study perennially because of its chemical, physical and biological properties. Meanwhile, in order to have an omnifaceted understanding of silk, the environmental performance of silk production is also worthy of attention. With the concern of global warming, efforts are increasingly focused on understanding and addressing carbon emission in the life cycle of silk products. However, the majority of current studies give priority to the carbon emission of either just one or a few stages of silk products’ life cycle, or to a specific type of silk product. On the basis of a review of literature on the life cycle assessment of silk products, this study presents a full-scale review of the quantification of the carbon emission and carbon neutrality of cocoon acquisition, industrial production of silk products, distribution, consumption, and recycling. The analysis revealed that the carbon sequestration by photosynthesis at the stage of cocoon acquisition could not be ignored. It is of importance to establish complete and unified system boundaries when quantifying carbon emissions in the industrial production of silk products. Reasonable models of washing times and washing modes are needed to assess carbon emissions in the domestic laundry of silk products. At the end of life phase of silk products, the positive impact on carbon emission in the phase of silk recycling is noteworthy. This study will help interested scholars, manufacturers and consumers to gain an in-depth understanding of the carbon emissions and carbon neutrality of silk products, and it is also of great value for exploring new production processes for reducing carbon emissions of silk products.

One of the wastes generated by PT Beton Elemenindo Perkasa is polystyrene foam waste. Processing of this type of waste is still done with open burning so it has an impact on health and the environmental quality degradation. One of the polystyrene foam waste processing technologies is by constructing a combustion furnace equipped with carbon filter. Activated carbon is one of the air filter media that can absorb harmful gases from the combustion process. The purpose of this research is to identify the effectiveness of carbon monoxide (CO) concentration reduction on active carbon contact system using variation of particle size. This research is a kind of an experimental study involving post test with control design. The number of samples was calculated based on the number of treatments and the number of repetitions in the study. This research used 2 kinds of treatment, including 20 mesh and 30 mesh in 9 repetitions. Independent T-Test statistical analysis showed a significant difference (p-value = 0.001) between the variation of particle size of activated carbon and the CO parameters with the average of the most effective reduction percentage on particle-sized active carbon of 30 mesh was 77.95%.

Opis:
In this study, the electrospray deposition (ESD) method was used to deposit carbon nanotubes (CNT) onto the surfaces of carbon fibers (CF) in order to produce hybrid carbon fiber-carbon nanotubes (CF-CNT) which is rarely reported in the past. Extreme high-resolution field emission scanning electron microscopy (XHR-FESEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to analyse the hybrid carbon fiber-carbon nanotube (CF-CNT). The results demonstrated that CNT was successfully and homogenously distributed on the CF surface. Hybrid CF-CNT was then prepared and compared with CF without CNT deposition in terms of their tensile properties. Statistically, the tensile strength and the tensile modulus of the hybrid CF-CNT were increased by up to 3% and 25%, respectively, as compared to the CF without CNT deposition. The results indicated that the ESD method did not cause any reduction of tensile properties of hybrid CF-CNT. Based on this finding, it can be prominently identified some new and significant information of interest to researchers and industrialists working on CF based products.

Opis:
Carbon accounting has become a valuable tool for expressing the fossil energy demand of products, organizational entities, or entire countries. About a decade ago, cities also began accounting their carbon emissions. The first major city to do so was London in 2009, stating a carbon footprint of 4.84 tCO2eq/(year*capita) for 2008. Nowadays, multiple rankings compare the carbon emissions of cities. For example, the Urban Land Magazine lists São Paulo as the city with the world’s lowest carbon emissions (1.4 CO2eq/(year*capita)). Such listings typically present the depicted emission values as scientifically indisputable numbers. However, a closer look at the applied methodology frequently reveals a wide range of implicit, often undisclosed assumptions at the foundation of the calculations. This paper analyses the uncertainties of carbon accounting on the city scale, using the example of the Red Sea resort town of El Gouna. The estimated value of El Gouna’s carbon footprint for the year 2014 is 14.3 tCO2eq/(year*capita). Third Scope emissions constitute the majority of El Gouna’s carbon footprint. Varying their underlying assumptions only slightly can lead to alterations of the results of more than 50%, questioning the robustness of the findings. To increase the robustness and the comparability of carbon accounting across cities, this paper suggests emphasizing Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, while limiting the role of Scope 3 emissions.
Carbon-13 fractionation in the oxidation of sodium propionate of natural isotopic composition with permanganate in water solution and with manganate in alkaline solution has been investigated and compared with carbon-14 kinetic isotope effects in the oxidation of (3-14C) – and (2-14C) propionate with permanganate. The experimental carbon-13 isotope ratios, R(13C/12C)cumul., corrected for dilution of R(13C/12C)a by carbon dioxide derived from all external sources and by carbon dioxide derived from (C-1) and from (C-3) of propionate at its complete and partial oxidations, used for calculation of 13C alfa KIE, provided the carbon-13 isotope effects corresponding to initial oxidation of alpha carbon, which correlate well with (2-14C) KIE determined previously, (k12/k13 -1)?100 ? 1/2(k12/k14 -1)?100 ? 1/2(4.6š0.3) at 373 K. The possibility of extension of isotope ratio measurements, using modern double collector mass spectrometers, from geochemical, biomedical, agriculture and environmental research to carbon-13 isotope effects studies in chemical organic reactions is briefly discussed.

A two-year field trial on maize (Zea mays L.) production was established to determine the influence of biochar, maize straw, and poultry manure on soil aggregate stability, aggregate size distribution, total organic carbon (TOC), and soil microbial biomass carbon (MBC). Seven treatments with four replications, namely CK, control; S, 12.5 Mg ha-1 straw; B 1 , 12.5 Mg ha-1 biochar; B 2 , 25 Mg ha-1 biochar; SB 1 , straw + 12.5 Mg ha-1 biochar; SB 2 , straw + 25 Mg ha-1 bio- char; and M, 25 Mg ha-1 manure were tested at four soil depths (0–10, 10–20, 20–30, and 30–40 cm). Aggregates were grouped into large macro-aggregates (5–2 mm), small macro-aggregates (2–0.25 mm), micro-aggregates (0.25–0.053 mm) and silt + clay (<0.053 mm). Biochar, straw, and manure applications all had significant effects (p < 0.05) on aggregate stability, with B 2 at 20 cm soil depth showing the greatest increase (62.1%). SB 1 of small macro-aggregate fraction showed the highest aggregate proportion (50.59% ± 10.48) at the 20–30 cm soil depth. The high- est TOC was observed in SB 2 (40.9 g kg-1) of large macro-aggregate at 10–20 cm soil depth. Treat- ment effects on soil MBC was high, with B 1 showing the greatest value (600.0 µg g-1) at the 20–30 cm soil depth. Our results showed that application of biochar, straw, and manure to soil increased aggregate stability, TOC as well as MBC.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to determine the effect of soil management systems of Brunic Arenosols on the total content of organic carbon and its fraction susceptible to oxidation in comparison with the soils under forests. The samples for study were taken from the humus horizon at the sites located in the forests and soils from little midforest cultivated fields (hunting plots). The agrotechnical treatments increased the content of the plant-available forms of P, K and Mg in the soils of most hunting plots in comparison to the forest soils. In the arable horizon of the hunting plots, t a varied total content of organic carbon and its fraction susceptible to oxidation was found. The cultivation of soil in the hunting plots caused a decrease in the content of total organic carbon as well as its labile and non-labile fraction. In order to evaluate the carbon transformation in the soil of the cultivated plots against the forest (reference soil), the Carbon Management Index (CMI) was used. The decay rate of soil organic matter in a natural forest was lower than in the agricultural fields. A long-term tillage of Brunic Arenosols contributed to the degradation of the pool of organic carbon in sandy-textured soil.
