This article contains a selection of notions from the Guidebook to the Novels of the West Slavs (a working title). The Guidebook is addressed predominantly  at researchers involved in comparative studies of the literatures of the West Slavs and it will cover fifty years (1945–1995) of novels written by West Slavic authors: Kashubian, Polish, Slovak (from Slovakia and the so-called  Lower Land), Czech as well as Upper and Lower Lusatian, and how they changed. Each entry will consist of a brief presentation of a novel’s content, bibliographical information (the subsequent editions, possible translations;  reception in the other languages will be limited exclusively to the West Slavs area), interpretation, a novel’s significance to a writer’s achievements,  specific national literature and, finally, the West Slavs’ novels as a whole, a selection (maximum five items) of the most important literature on the subject.

The article shows the transformation that Grodno underwent in the 18th century in the light of accounts of peregrinates from Western Europe. In the first half of the century, a provincial, uninteresting Lithuanian town reluctantly visited by Western European travelers, in the second half of the century gained significantly a power of attraction. To a large extent, the city owed its transformation to Lithuanian Court Treasurer Antoni Tyzenhauz, which the travelers emphasized unanimously. The change in the face of the city was also reflected in eighteenth-century Western European publications.

The object of research is the trust problem in the relations of the East and the West. The author in detail analyzes the phenomenon of trust, its principles and distinctive signs. Special attention is paid to conditions of formation of trust as on micro (between individuals) and at the macro level (between societies). The author connects the trust problem with a categorization “friend-or-foe”, considered in the civilization aspect of the subject. Thus, the author in the research used the case study method and content analysis. The novelty of research consists in approach to understanding intensity between civilizations of the East and the West through a problem of the possibility of confidential relations between them. The author comes to a conclusion that in the modern international relations there is a paradoxical situation: the trust measure between the countries decreases, in volume time as it is possible to cope with new calls and threats only through consolidation of the world community on the basis of mutual trust.

The article is a translation into Polish Semyon L. Frank’s review of Vladimir F. Ern’s famous work entitled A few words about Logos, the Russian philosophy and scientific spirit. Because of the new philosophical journal „Logos”. The author of this review regards Ern’s article as a eulogy of Russian philosophical thought. Ern rejects the whole “modern Western philosophical awareness.” It is – as he claims – imbued with the principle of ratio, hostile to the idea of Logos, expressed in Russian philosophy and the Orthodox Church. First and foremost, Frank accuses Ern of a vague outline of the concept of ratio. According to the author of the review, the principle of ratio is a fundamental feature of the concept of philosophy as such, and the history of ancient philosophy is the history of the origin of rational science. He stresses that Ern blurs the difference that exists between philosophy and religion and Ern’s hidden thought is the belief that religion better replaces philosophy. According to him, Ern is a conceited and blind nationalist who lacks a proper perspective on the assessment of his native philosophy and, at the same time, he impertinently tramples on the eternal values of European thought. Ultimately Frank supports the development of philosophical culture in Russia not writing off the meaning of the relations of thought with Western heritage.

On “Man ceaselessly seeks happiness”, a travel diary of an eco-theologian Tatiana Goricheva The author faces the main task of a comprehensive – to its possible extent – overview of Man ceaselessly seeks happiness. He approaches the text from the perspective of its genre and the subject matter. By taking into consideration the main thought behind the title of the book, he examines what the search for happiness means to the writer. The notions of poetics intersect with remarks on the essay-like narration of the diary, in which the writer shares her thoughts on religions and cultures of the West, the East, South Asia, Russian migrants scattered around the world, the contemporary state of the Church and Christians in Europe and outside  it, individual and collective ways of searching for God or human approach towards animals. The author reaches a conclusion that “Man ceaselessly seeks happiness” is not a traditional travel diary and Tatiana Goricheva’s musings present a deeply individual outlook on the notions of Christianity and faith.

The figure of the Patriarch has always had a great importance in the life of the Church over the centuries. Furthermore, the patriarchal institution has its roots in the experience lived by the Church since the time of the Apostles, indeed, even before the Ecumenical Councils which recognized it and sanctioned it. The Patriarch, according to the discipline of Eastern Canon Law, is a bishop who presides over a “sui iuris” church of patriarchal rank, who has authority over the bishops, metropolitans and all Christian faithful of the Church he governs, according to the approved law by the Supreme Authority of the Church. He presides over his Church as “pater et caput” and this expression indicates the collegial nature of the patriarchal government in some Eastern Churches, where all the ecclesiastical and civil powers in a country with a Christian minority are concentrated in the person of the Patriarch. The root of the Pentarchy dates back to the first millennium. It refers to the collegiality of the five Patri-archs, precisely, the bishops of Rome, Constantinople, Alexandria, Antioch and Jerusalem in the government of the universal Church. In 2006 Pope Benedict XVI renounced the title of “Patriarch of the West” and this was the cause of a controversial debate on the theory of the “Pentarchy” between Catholics and Orthodox. A strong debate, very similar to that, was the debate concerning the patriarchal institution in relation to the Primacy of the Roman Apostolic See. Unfortunately, this debate has sometimes caused deep wounds such as the schisms between East and West. Today, however, this institution, rediscovered with new light of Vatican II, could contribute to the ecumenical journey towards the perfect union of all Christians.

Quantum Leap 2.0 or the Western gaze on Russian homophobiaThis paper analyzes recent discourses about Russian homophobia within Anglophone media. It argues that western liberal media, supranational institutions such as the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), and gay rights activists create discourses that center gay issues in the midst of an East-West oppositionality. Such a binary construction creates the image of a just, democratic and homophile West in opposition to an undemocratic, unjust, homophobic East, dominated by Russia. It attaches the notions of progress, equality and freedom not only to a homo-tolerant or homo-inclusive legislation and society, but actually binds all these aspects to the global territory of Western nations. Russia, Eastern Europe and Eurasia, on the other hand, become attached to the notion of homophobia, hence backwardness, and anti-modern conservatism. The key figures and visual representations of all these discourses, that simultaneously signify western homo-tolerant progress as well as Russian anti-gay backwardness are white young gay men, who became victims of anti-gay violence. In using images of frightened, beaten or otherwise harmed young white men, liberal media, supranational institutions, and gay rights activists render the gay subject not only as vulnerable, and without agency, but also as globally uniform and carrier of western insignia. In this way, gays are symbolized by western signs, and become symbols themselves, standing in for western progress, modernity and development. Somehow paradoxically, such a focus on gay men allows for ignorance towards lesbians, transgender, intersex and other queers as well as the troubling nationalism, homophobia and racism within Western, Anglophone countries, such as the USA or the UK. Moreover, it allows for what Kulpa calls “leveraged pedagogy,” a condemnation or reprimand of Russian policies, from a point of moral and ethical (western) superiority. „Zagubiony w czasie” 2.0 albo zachodnie spojrzenie na rosyjską homofobięPrzedmiotem niniejszej analizy są dyskursy o rosyjskiej homofobii obecne we współczesnych mediach anglojęzycznych. Autorka stwierdza, że zachodnie liberalne media, aktywiści gejowscy oraz organizacje ponadnarodowe, takie jak Europejski Trybunał Praw Człowieka, budują dyskurs umieszczający kwestię gejowską w centrum opozycji Wschód-Zachód. Taka binarna konstrukcja tworzy obraz praworządnego, demokratycznego i przyjaznego homoseksualistom Zachodu przeciwstawionego niedemokratycznemu, niesprawiedliwemu i homofobicznemu Wschodowi, zdominowanemu przez Rosję. Łączy ona idee postępu, równości i wolności nie tylko z tolerancyjnym i włączającym prawodawstwem, ale wiąże te aspekty z samym terytorium państw zachodnich. Z drugiej strony Rosja, Europa Wschodnia i Eurazja zostają skojarzone z ideami homofobii, zacofania i antynowoczesnego konserwatyzmu. Kluczowymi postaciami i reprezentacją wizualną tych dyskursów, która ukazuje zarówno zachodni tolerancyjny dla homoseksualizmu postęp, jak i rosyjskie antygejowskie zacofanie, stają się młodzi biali mężczyźni, którzy padli ofiarą homofobicznej przemocy. Wykorzystując obrazy przerażonych, pobitych, czy w inny sposób skrzywdzonych młodych białych mężczyzn, liberalne media, instytucje międzynarodowe i aktywiści gejowscy nie tylko przedstawiają gejów jako bezbronnych i pozbawionych sprawczości, ale również jako jednolitą grupę nosicieli zachodnich wartości. W ten sposób utożsamieni z symbolami Zachodu geje sami stają się symbolami zachodniego postępu, nowoczesności i rozwoju. Paradoksalnie, skupienie się na homoseksualnych mężczyznach pozwala lekceważyć lesbijki, osoby transpłciowe, interseksualne czy w inny sposób nieheteronormatywne. Pozwala również przemilczeć kłopotliwy nacjonalizm, homofobię i rasizm w państwach anglojęzycznego Zachodu, takich jak USA i Wielka Brytania. Umożliwia ono wreszcie potępianie przez Zachód rosyjskiej polityki z pozycji moralnej i etycznej wyższości, które Robert Kulpa określa mianem „pedagogiki nacisku”.

Podjęta przez Tadeusza Kuncewicza i jego oddział próba dotarcia do amerykańskiej strefy okupacyjnej w lipcu 1945 r. jest powszechnie znana. Jednakże opracowania naukowe utrzymują, że jego działania miały związek z Brygadą Świętokrzyską stacjonującą w lecie 1945 r. w zachodnich Czechach. Co więcej, działalność Kuncewicza i jego współtowarzyszy na terytorium Czechosłowacji była owiana tajemnicą, a w wydanych dotychczas opracowaniach można napotkać wiele błędów. Niedawno odkryte archiwalne dokumenty pozwalają nam odtworzyć, co rzeczywiście się wydarzyło po dotarciu oddziału Kuncewicza na terytorium Czechosłowacji. Wiadomo, że Kuncewicz i jego ludzie znaleźli się w niewielkim miasteczku Šluknov (zachodnie Czechy) przypadkowo i prawdopodobnie nawet nie zdawali sobie sprawy, że są na terytorium Czechosłowacji. Niestety natknęli się tam na porucznika czechosłowackiej armii, Josefa Šindelářa, który postanowił sprawdzić tożsamość Polaków w pobliskim posterunku sowieckim. Ponieważ dla Kuncewicza i jego towarzyszy oznaczałoby to koniec podróży na Zachód, w drodze na posterunek Polacy podążający za samochodem Šindelářa postanowili udać, że ich pojazd się zepsuł. Šindelář oraz jego kierowca Vlastimil Malina zostali następnie rozbrojeni i zastrzeleni w lesie. Kochanka Šindelářa, Margit Maschke, która podróżowała wraz z nim, została przez Polaków uprowadzona, a później wypuszczona w pobliżu miejscowości Klášterec nad Ohrzą. Polacy dotarli do amerykańskiej strefy okupacyjnej w zachodnich Czechach Amerykańscy urzędnicy, dowiedziawszy się, że Kuncewicz i jego ludzie zamordowali dwóch czechosłowackich żołnierzy, wydali ich w ręce czechosłowackiego kontrwywiadu. Polacy zostali oskarżeni o współpracę z nazistowską organizacją Werwolf. W drodze do więzienia podjęli nieudaną próbę ucieczki. W rezultacie ośmiu z nich zostało zastrzelonych; dziewięciu schwytano, a tylko pięciu udało się uciec. Dziewięciu Polaków – w tym Kuncewicza – torturowano podczas przesłuchania (dwóch z nich zmarło w niewoli) i zmuszono do przyznania się do zabójstwa Šindelářa we współpracy z Werwolfem. Oczywiście wszyscy później odwołali swoje zeznania. Przesłuchanie prowadził kapitan Vilém Dovara, który został potem skazany za popełnione w tamtym czasie na czeskim pograniczu zbrodnie przeciwko niemieckiej ludności cywilnej. Polacy byli przetrzymywani w więzieniu (bez procesu) przez niemal dwa lata. Po pewnym czasie udało im się skontaktować z polską ambasadą w Pradze. Ponieważ żaden z nich nie był bezpośrednim sprawcą morderstwa, czechosłowackie władze odesłały ich do Polski, gdzie wszyscy zostali skazani na karę więzienia za wcześniejszą antykomunistyczną działalność w Polsce.

Since the first half of the thirteenth century follows the locations of cities in West Pomerania under German law. They arise mainly from the economic motives and are related to the privileges granted to cities. The townspeople are becoming more independent of feudal power. The result of obtaining the independence is creation of the City Council - a local authority.
