Opis:
Although tracks of dinosaurs are well known from Upper Jurassic sediments, tracks of non−dinosaurian vertebrates are fairly rare. The Upper Jurassic Lastres Formations of Asturias in northern Spain contain many vertebrate tracksites that include footprints and trackways of non−dinosaurian tetrapods. Several of these tracks are natural casts of pentadactyl to tridactyl footprints with digits connected by arched structures. The digits are short with deep scratch marks oriented anteriorly. The Asturian tracks show a high degree of morphological similarity to other specimens previously described as possible turtle tracks. Observations from extant turtle trackways show some surprising similarities with the fossil material. The tracks are here interpreted as having been made by turtles partially buoyed by water or by turtles walking in a slightly wet subaerial environment.

Opis:
In this paper, explain the preparation of CaTiO3 ceramics synthesized by the solid-state reaction method. Calcium carbonate and titanium dioxide were high energy mixed in stoichiometric amounts, and the obtained mixture was calcined at different temperatures (800, 900, 1000 and 1300ºC) for 2h. The obtained samples were characterized by measurement of particle size, Energy Dispersive X-Ray (EDX) Analysis; differential thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction and SEM images. XRD patterns indicated that CaTiO3 ceramics with the structure of perovskite is obtained from calcined powders at 1,300°C for 2h. SEM images show the formation of a very fine and homogeneous morphology. The measured values of electrical resistivity were within the typical range of insulating materials and approach values corresponding to insulating ceramics.

Opis:
Root-knot nematodes, genus Meloidogyne, are among the most plant damaging pathogens worldwide. The action of natural products against plant pathogens has been investigated to assess their effectiveness in the control of diseases. Thus, the present study aimed to evaluate the phytochemistry potential of the Ficus species for the control of Meloidogyne javanica. In vitro inhibitory activity assays were performed with crude ethanolic extracts of leaves and branches from 10 Ficus species. Among these, Ficus carica extracts exhibited strong paralysis activity against second stage juveniles (J2) (EC50 = 134.90 μg ∙ ml–1 ), after 72 hours. In addition, high efficacy was observed in egg-hatching inhibition at different embryonic stages. Microscopy analysis revealed severe morphological alterations in the nematode tissues at the J2 stage, as well as immotility of juveniles released from eggs in the presence of F. carica extracts. The efficacy of the treatments for the other species was very low. These differences were supported by the variation in the compound classes, mainly for alkaloids and metabolite profiles by Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) when F. carica was compared with the other species. The results indicated that F. carica is a promising source for the isolation and identification of molecules capable of acting in the control of M. javanica.

An implemented impedance measuring instrument is described in this paper. The device uses a dsPIC (Digital Signal Peripheral Interface Controller) as a processing unit, and a DDS (Direct Digital Synthesizer) to stimulate the measurement circuit composed by the reference impedance and the unknown impedance. The voltages across the impedances are amplified by programmable gain instrumentation amplifiers and then digitized by analog to digital converters. The impedance is measured by applying a seven-parameter sine-fitting algorithm to estimate the sine signal parameters. The dsPIC communicates through RS-232 or USB with a computer, where the measurement results can be analyzed. The device also has an LCD to display the measurement results.

Opis:
Paramagnetic centers in the two exemplary synthetic and natural dental biocompatible materials applied in implantology were examined by the use of an X-band (9.3 GHz) electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. The EPR spectra were measured in the range of microwave power 2.2–70 mW. The aims of this work were to compare paramagnetic centers concentrations in different dental biocompatible materials and to determine the effect of microwave power on parameters of their EPR spectra. It is the very fi rst and innovatory examination of paramagnetic centers in these materials. It was pointed out that paramagnetic centers existed in both natural (~1018 spin/g) and synthetic (~1019 spin/g) dental biocompatible materials, but the lower free radical concentration characterized the natural sample. Continuous microwave saturation of EPR spectra indicated that faster spin-lattice relaxation processes existed in synthetic dental biocompatible materials than in natural material. Linewidths (ΔBpp) of the EPR spectra of the natural dental material slightly increased for the higher microwave powers. Such effect was not observed for the synthetic material. The broad EPR lines (ΔBpp): 2.4 mT, 3.9 mT, were measured for the natural and synthetic dental materials, respectively. Probably strong dipolar interactions between paramagnetic centers in the studied samples may be responsible for their line broadening. EPR spectroscopy is the useful experimental method in the examination of paramagnetic centers in dental biocompatible materials.

Opis:
The main problem in the flotation of Cu-Mo sulfide ores in seawater is poor floatability of molybdenite at pH>9.5. Froth stability plays a very important role in determining concentrate grade and recovery in flotation operations and in this paper both floatability and frothability have been tested. The frothability have been studied by measuring froth equilibrium layer thickness in a modified laboratory flotation cell. Two chemical aspects of seawater need to be considered: the content of NaCl (around 87% of salinity), and the concentration of secondary ions (around 13%) (sulfate, magnesium, calcium, bicarbonate ions, etc.). Seawater, NaCl solutions, and seawater’s ions were found to depress frothability. The effect of pH on frothability over the pH range from 9.5 to 11, which is very strong in freshwater, becomes negligible in seawater and the tested electrolyte solutions. The analysis of the relationship between the mechanisms of molybdenite depression and the loss of frothability in seawater implies that the effects of the studied ions on molybdenite floatability and on pulp frothability are different. While depression of molybdenite floatability could be tracked down to magnesium hydroxide precipitation as a main culprit, the depression of frothability is a much more complicated issue.

In this work, the influence of both characteristics of the lens and misalignment of the incident beams on roughness measurement is presented. To investigate how the focal length and diameter affect the degree of correlation between the speckle patterns, a set of experiments with different lenses is performed. On the other hand, the roughness when the beams separated by an amount are non-coincident at the same point on the sample is measured. To conclude the study, the uncertainty of the method is calculated.

Opis:
Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) examinations of free radicals formed in diclofenac heated at 180°C were performed. EPR spectrum for the non-heated sample was not obtained. Asymmetrical EPR lines were measured for the studied heated drug. Properties and free radicals concentration in heated diclofenac during storage of the sample were studied. High amount of free radicals (∼10(19) spin/g) characterizes diclofenac after heating of the sample. Free radicals concentration in heated diclofenac increases with increasing storage time of the sample. Free radicals - tissues interactions may be accompanied by toxic effects in organisms and changes of biomaterial's structure, so thermal sterilization is rather rejected as sterlization process for diclofenac. Influence of microwave power on lineshape, amplitudes and linewidth of EPR spectra was described. Continuous microwave saturation of EPR lines points out that slow spin-lattice relaxation processes exist in the heated diclofenac.

Opis:
A negative impact of radicals on human’s health is responsible for growing research interest in antioxidant properties of substances, which protect organisms from the damaging influence of these reactive species. Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACE-I) are the most popular drugs used in cardiovascular diseases. There are a lot of clinical reports that ACE-I have antioxidant properties, due to the fact, that prolonged use improves conditions of patients with neurodegenerative disorders and slow inflammatory processes. The paper shows the antioxidant properties of a selected ACE-I: cilazapril, ramipril, imidapril, lisinopril, perindopril, and quinapril. Among numerous methods for antioxidant activity estimation, DPPH reduction is the most popular and commonly used one due to its ease, speed, sensitivity and the usage of stable radicals. UV-Vis spectrophotometry was used to examine interactions of chosen ACE-I with model-free radicals. Absorption of UV-Vis spectra of DPPH (reference), and DPPH interacting with the tested ACE-I were compared. For all tested ACE-I kinetics of their interaction with DPPH, up to 30 minutes, were obtained. The strongest interaction with DPPH was observed for imidapril and cilazapril and the lowest interaction for lisinopril. Studies have shown usefulness UV-Vis spectrophotometry for obtaining information on interactions of ACE-I with model-free radicals.

A model for an artificial hydrogen molecule consisting of two positive on-axis Coulombic centers and two electrons coupled to them inside a double concentric quantum ring is considered. Such a nanostructure is assumed to be under the influence of external probes like hydrostatic pressure and magnetic field. By using the adiabatic approximation, the ground state energy is calculated as a function of the outer center line radius and the impurity Coulombic center separation, for different values of the hydrostatic pressure and magnetic field strength. In contrast to the single properties imposed by nature on the actual hydrogen molecule, our model allows us to explore a great variety of properties of the artificial hydrogen molecule by changing the ring dimensions. The artificial hydrogen molecule energy structure may be tuned by changing the external field strengths.

In this work we investigate the energy states in a $D_2^+$ complex formed by the coupling of a conduction band electron and two donor centers in a quantum ring with rectangular cross-section. The influences of externally applied probes like electric and magnetic fields and hydrostatic pressure together with the change in the relative position between the two Coulombic centers are particularly studied, highlighting the important contribution of the repulsive inter-center interaction. The destruction of the Aharonov-Bohm oscillations of the ground state associated with the localization of the electron states in the system is discussed.

Using a variational procedure within the effective mass approximation, we have calculated the hydrogenic impurity binding energy as well as the impurity-related nonlinear optical absorption in a single quantum ring with axial n-type delta-doping. The delta-like potential along the z-direction is analytically modeled with a Hartree-like confining profile fitted to a one-dimensional Thomas-Fermi-based potential in the local density approximation. Both on-center and on-edge impurity positions are considered and the energies of the impurity states are examined as functions of the vertical size of the ring. It is found that the effect of changes in the geometry of the quantum ring leads to a shifting of the resonant peaks of the intra-band optical spectrum.
