Opis:
This is a biography of an eminent representative of the Promnitz baronial family – one of the most prominent aristocratic families of Silesia and Lower Lusatia between the 16th and 18th century. From 1703, Erdmann II held two state countries in fee tail: Księstwo Pszczyńskie (the Duchy of Pless) and the Żary-Trzebiel state in Lower Lusatia. During the first years of his reign, he maintained a magnificent court. Between 1705 and 1708, the court’s kapellmeister was Georg Filip Telemann, then a budding baroque composer. The Count (Reichsgraf), being the heir of a Lutheran family, tried (unsuccessfully) to restore Protestant churches, but that only became possible after Prussia conquered Silesia in 1742. Earlier, in 1709, after the Treaty of Altranstädt (1707), he sought to found one of the six Protestant so-called Grace Churches in Pszczyna. The church was however established in the nearby town of Cieszyn (the Jesus Church). Erdmann II helped finance its construction. He also financially supported one of the pastors, as well as several dozens of boys who came from his estates to study in the parish school. He founded many schools in Lower Lusatia and one in Pszczyna. The count maintained a close relationship with August Hermann Francke, a professor at the University of Halle. Ermann II was also a leading patron of the Pietist movement in Silesia and Saxony. In 1718, he was awarded the Order of the White Eagle (Poland’s highest decoration). He was also a member of the secret council of Frederick Augustus I (king of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth Augustus II the Strong). The biography also covers his diverse business endeavours (construction, first industrial investments) and military career.

Opis:
The first years of a reconstituted Polish state were one of the landmark moments in the history of Bielsko and Biała. At that time, the two towns already constituted one urban organism on the border of Cieszyn Silesia and Galicia – a single industrial and cultural-educational center, multi-ethnic and multiconfessional. However, while in the case of Biała 1918 brought quite a natural return to the situation from before 1772 (when it was under Austrian rule), Bielsko entered the borders of the new Poland after almost six hundred years of Czech and Austrian rule. The preserved archival legacy regarding events between 1918 and 1922 is not very extensive, hence Polish and German press of that period is a crucial sources. One of them is the then most widely read Polish newspaper in Cieszyn Silesia – Gwiazdka Cieszyńska, a publication created by the Association of Silesian Catholics and its prominent leader, Fr. Józef Londzin. The author analyzes its contents in terms of the subject of Bielsko-Biała, which, although it was only a fraction of the content of the paper’s pages, provides a lot of valuable source information. This information is arranged thematically and presented in the following sub-chapters: political life, the Upper Silesian issue (the plebiscite), social conflicts and trade unions (along with descriptions of riots caused by food shortages in 1919), national relations (marked by the Polish-German conflict), the Administrative Commission of Bielsko (which managed the city in the years 1921-1922), economic issues, church and religious matters, educational situation in Bielsko, and cultural life.

Opis:
The article deals with a mysterious conflict that occurred in 1497 over the town of Bielsko and adjacent villages, between the Upper Silesian princes Casimir II of Cieszyn (a fiefdom of Czech kings) and Jan V of Zator (a fiefdom of Polish kings). Casimir II demanded that Jan V return this territory, as well as a certain sum of money and family jewels. John V came into possession of the "Bielsko territory" after 1489, in unknown circumstances. Probably around 1494 the case was brought before the arbitration court of the Bishop of Wrocław, Jan Roth, who on 28 November 1497 issued a judgment favourable to Casimir II. Nevertheless, the Duke of Zator neglected to relinquish Bielsko and the money for quite some time. He eventually followed the ruling in 1498. Because of the scarcity of historical sources, the origins of the conflict remain mysterious. The author puts forward several hypotheses in this respect: the disputed territory may have been a pledge by Casimir II in favour of the lender Jan V. Another hypothesis concerns the matter of reclaiming the dowry after the unexpected, childless death of the wife of Jan V, Barbara, who was also the sister of the Duke of Cieszyn, who paid the dowry. The period of Jan V's rule over Bielsko was also the next stage in the emergence of a new administrative creation from the Duchy of Cieszyn – the Duchy of Bielsko, and the future smaller state country of Bielsko.
