Opis:
The aim of this study was to determine an effect of myotonometric records’ number on stiffness measurements’ reliability in muscles at rest and contraction. Methods: Muscle stiffness was measured using Myoton-3 device. Twenty records were taken for: (i) biceps (BB) and triceps brachii (TB) at rest and for BB at 10% of maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) in healthy elderlies (HE) and in Parkinson’s disease patients (PD); and (ii) brachioradialis (BR) at rest and at 25, 50 and 80% MVC in healthy young (HY) subjects. Also, in HY group, the 3-records mode was used for BR’s measurements at maximal contraction. Each measurement taken with 20-records was classed into five records groups: the whole 20- and the first 15-, 10-, 5- and 3-records. Test-retest reliability for these records groups was analyzed. Results: In HE and PD group measurements’ reliability was excellent for all groups of records (20–3 records). In HY group, for the five groups of records taken at rest and submaximal levels of contraction (25, 50 and 80% MVC) the measurements reliability: (i) was mostly excellent or rarely average; and (ii) only in one per three 50% MVC conditions was unacceptable, i.e., for the 3-records group. The reliability of 3-records mode measurements at maximal contraction were unacceptable. Conclusions: Reliable myotonometric stiffness measurements in muscles at rest and during submaximal contractions can be achieved with less than 20 records (15, 10, 5 records) and even for the most of measurements with 3 records in HY and HE as well as in the PD patients. Myotonometric stiffness measurements with 3-records mode during maximal contraction were not reliable.

Opis:
Heightened tonic stretch reflex contributes to increased muscle tone and a more-flexed resting elbow joint angle (EJA) in patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD). Dopaminergic medication restores central nervous system (CNS) functioning and decreases resting muscle electrical and mechanical activities. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of dopaminergic medication on parkinsonian rigidity, resting EJA, resting electrical activity (electromyography, EMG) and mechanical properties (myotonometry, MYO) of elbow flexor muscles and the associations of EJA with these muscles resting electrical activity and mechanical properties in PD patients. We also evaluated a relationship between dopaminergic treatment dose and these outcome measures values. Methods: Ten PD patients (age 68 ± 10.1 years; body mass 70 ± 16.8 kg; height 162 ± 6.6 cm; illness duration 9 ± 4.5 years) were tested during medication on- and off-phases. Resting EJA, myotonometric muscle stiffness (S-MYO) and root mean square electromyogram amplitude (RMS-EMG) were recorded from relaxed biceps brachii and brachioradialis muscles. Based on the above parameters, we also calculated the EJA/S-MYO ratio and EJA/RMS-EMG ratio. Parkinsonian rigidity was assessed using the motor section of the Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale. Results: EJA, EJA/S-MYO ratio, and EJA/RMS-EMG ratio were increased and S-MYO, RMS-EMG, and parkinsonian rigidity were decreased during the medication on-phase compared with the off-phase. In addition, the dopaminergic treatment dose was negatively correlated with S-MYO and RMS-EMG, and positively correlated with EJA/SMYO and EJA/RMS-EMG ratios. Conclusions: We conclude that dopaminergic medication-induced improvements in resting elbow joint angle in tested patients with PD are related to changes in their muscle electrical and mechanical properties.

Opis:
Działanie wielu zabiegów fizykalnych stosowanych w medycynie wiąże się ze zmianami temperatury tkanek. Przeprowadzono badania dotyczące możliwości wykorzystania techniki termograficznej do oceny skuteczności zabiegu krioterapii miejscowej (kriostymulacji miejscowej) u pacjentów z reumatoidalnym zapaleniem stawów. Badanie przeprowadzono w celu określenia stopnia intensywności wymuszenia termicznego podczas zabiegów krioterapii miejscowej i czasu trwania odpowiedzi organizmu na zastosowane wymuszenie.
Many medical procedures cause the thermal changes of flesh and tissues. In the paper, the investigation on the possibilities of thermographic technique application for evaluation of the criotherapy procedure success (local criostimulation) have been described. The people with rheumathoid arthritis underwent the criogenic treatment in order to evaluate the degree of local thermal stimulation and the time of the organism response. The investigations have been based on the temperature distribution on the palm surface before the treatment with cooled air or liquid nitrogen, immediately after, and in certain time periods. The similar examination had been held in the investigations of the related variables after cellulitis treatment with creams. The organism reactions are very similar in both cases. The investigations have led to the optimization of procedures of thermal stimulation in rheumatology and cosmetology.

Opis:
Last time we have noticed still more studies confirming the relation between emotional intelligence and various aspects of human behavior. Professional soldiers are a group which includes primarily commanders of various levels. Commanding need not only special kind of military knowledge, but suitable social skills as well. Goal of the study: Does and how the emotional intelligence influence the types of behavior and experience connected with occupational stress among the professional soldiers? The research was conducted using two questionnaires: INTE Questionnaire describing the emotional intelligence and AVEM Questionnaire describing four types of behavior and experience connected with job. The sample consisted of 141 professional soldiers. The results show the correlation between emotional intelligence and the types of behavior and experience connected with job in the group of professional soldiers: higher level of emotional intelligence is connected with the healthy behavior – Type G, but lower level of emotional intelligence is connected with the burnt-out behavior – Type B.

Opis:
The treatment of comminuted tibial shaft fractures in canine patients is burdened by significant risk which involves bone healing complications, such as delayed bone union. Complications may result from iatrogenic damage to blood vessels during fracture stabilization. To minimize this risk, treatment methods increasingly often rely on the concept of biological osteosynthesis. One of such methods involves the treatment of fractures with the use of new hybrid fixator consisted of an interlocking nail connected with type I external fixator. Connection of the nail with external fixator has been recently developed to maximize treatment efficiency. This manner of stabilization increases bone-fixator construct strength on forces acting in the place of fracture. It also enables fracture fixation with minimal damage of the blood supply of bone fragments. This article describes surgical procedure of stabilization of comminuted tibial bone fractures in four dogs by the use of interlocking nail connected with external fixator type I, discusses and evaluates the results of clinical treatment with the involvement of the said fixator. To control bone consolidation process the radiograms were taken in 6 and 8 week of healing. In all cases, the reviewed methods of clinical treatment were successful in producing bone union after eight week of healing. During the whole period of observations no complication was observed. In all cases the intramedullary nail were left in the medullary canal after the healing process was finished. The fixator supported quick restoration of limb function after treatment.

Opis:
This paper presents the results of a study of the treatment of transverse tibial shaft fractures in six sheep with the use of interlocking nails and type I extemal fixators. During surgery, tibial osteotomy was performed to induce an experimental fracture which was stabilized using a type I extemal fixator. Osteosynthesis was monitored for nine weeks by performing clinical tests, observing the degree of lameness and subjecting the patients to weekly radiological examinations. After nine weeks, the animals were euthanized, and samples of bone callus were sampled for histopathological analyses. Weight bearing on the fractured limb began on day 2 to 4 after treatment. Limb function was fully restored around five weeks after surgery. Radiograms taken during the observation period revealed gradual hyperplasia and progressing mineralization of bone callus at different stages of healing. The histopathological picture of the bone callus was characteristic of the phase of bone turnover and remodeling.

Opis:
Magnetic resonance imaging is the best imaging modality for the brain and spine. Quality of the received images depends on many technical factors. The most significant factors are: positioning the patient, proper coil selection, selection of appropriate sequences and image planes. The present contrast between different tissues provides an opportunity to diagnose various lesions. In many clinics magnetic resonance imaging has replaced myelography because of its noninvasive modality and because it provides excellent anatomic detail. There are many different combinations of sequences possible for spinal and brain MR imaging. Most frequently used are: T2-weighted fast spin echo (FSE), T1- and T2-weighted turbo spin echo, Fluid Attenuation Inversion Recovery (FLAIR), T1-weighted gradient echo (GE) and spin echo (SE), high-resolution three-dimensional (3D) sequences, fat-suppressing short tau inversion recovery (STIR) and half-Fourier acquisition single-shot turbo spin echo (HASTE). Magnetic resonance imaging reveals neurologic lesions which were previously hard to diagnose antemortem.
