The article deals with the images of Lithuania found in Czesław Miłosz’s poetry. The novels and essays have only been used to confirm the conclusions drawn from the interpretation of selected poems. Despite the frequently-declared unwillingness of the author of Dolina Issy (The Valley of the Issa) to accept and use any autobiographical elements in literature, the land of his childhood has always been present in all the poet’s works. The explanation of this fascination with nostalgia seems to be unsatisfactory. The author of the article perceives the poetic images of Lithuania created by the uprooted immigrant as a symbol of his inner, not purely geographical, settlement. The subject of the discussion is the ever-changing perception of the Eastern-Borderland, which corresponds to particular stages of the protagonist’s journey through life. The starting point is the experience of eviction. It modifies the originally idealized vision of the “little homeland” and makes the hero’s attempt to reject or “amputate” it. The poems from the Światło dzienne (Daylight) collection surprise the reader by a hostile attitude towards the poet’s youth spent in Lithuania and the perception of those early memories as some destructive forces threatening the artist. It is only after a many years’ quest that the borderland heritage is appreciated and conquered again. Now, however, it acquires a different, more symbolic form. The cycle Miasto bez imienia (A Town without a Name) and the poem Gdzie wschodzi słońce i kędy zapada (Where the Sun Rises and Sets) are evidence of a gradual transformation. The faithful recreation in the poet’s memory of particular places and people changes into the construction of some outside religious space, built from the traces of the real world. Lithuania changes into a perfect reality, a Super-Land, capable of retaining the past and combining it with the present. It is a prop freeing the poet from the waste land of Urizen.

This article begins with addressing the 19th century relationships between the detective story and classical music, which were found, for example, in Charles Dickens’ or Arthur Conan Doyle’s works. Against this background, two of Jan Antoni Homa’s novels, Altowiolista (The Altoviolist) and Ostatni koncert (The Last Concert) are discussed as forming a separate musical detective story stream in the Polish literature. Further analysis concerns chosen aspects of these stories, the aspects which determine their musical nature, such as: the structure of the literary characters, the world depicted, the composition, the journalistic or essayistic digressions. A question is posed about the purpose of these works and about their potential readers.
Artykuł wychodzi od przypomnienia jeszcze dziewiętnastowiecznych związków prozy detektywistycznej i muzyki klasycznej, realizowanych np. w utworach Charlesa Dickensa i Artura Conan Doyle’a. Na tym tle omówione zostają dwie współczesne powieści autorstwa Jana Antoniego Homy: Altowiolista i Ostatni koncert, które na gruncie polskiego piśmiennictwa tworzą odrębny nurt kryminału muzycznego. Dalsza analiza dotyczy wybranych aspektów tychże powieści, decydujących o ich muzycznym charakterze, np.: konstrukcja bohaterów i świat przedstawiony, schemat kompozycyjny, dygresje publicystyczno-eseistyczne. W zakończeniu stawiane jest pytanie o cel, jaki można przypisać wymienionym tekstom, oraz o ich potencjalnego odbiorcę.

This article has a nature of a record. It was inspired by the 200th anniversary of the birth of Stanisław Moniuszko, and its main goal is to reference selected celebratory poems created in the 19th century in order to commemorate the composer. The author of this article indicated how different authors interpreted the ideological expressions of Moniuszko’s music, its sources, and the functions it fulfilled. She also discussed the directions of the evolution regarding how the composer was depicted in poetry, as he was initially perceived as a “native busker”, a Vilnius lyrnik, and a compatriot, and he gradually gained the rank of a folk minstrel and a prophet able to reproduce the “lyrical genius of the nation”.

This article presents several examples of illustrations inspired by Slowacki’s poetry which were issued in 1909. They are based on four different methods and styles in the art of illustration. The present author discusses the advantages and disadvantages of these paintings, their artistic value and the public’s reception. The focus is also on the mutual connection between the literary work and its artistic interpretation. The analysis shows the difference between the paintings which created an independent vision of Slowacki’s poetry and the popular art, whose main aim was to popularise the works of this romantic author. The paper also raises the question as to which of these trends have existed most in the culture and have proved to be more popular among readers.

Celem artykułu jest przypomnienie powstałej w 1843 r. robinsonady Pauliny Krakowowej pt. Wspomnienia wygnanki i wskazanie możliwych kierunków jej współczesnej lektury. Analizie podlegają występujące w powieści postaci kobiece, stosowane przez nie strategie radzenia sobie w obliczu niesprzyjających okoliczności, a także podejmowane już na opuszczonej wyspie działania procywilizacyjne. Ich opis, zdaniem autorki artykułu, dla polskiej pisarki mógł mieć podwójne znaczenie: tak emancypacyjne, jak i patriotyczne. Odrębną kwestią sygnalizowaną w szkicu jest usytuowanie utworu Krakowowej w kontekście innych zachodnioeuropejskich kobiecych robinsonad XIX w. omawianych m.in. przez takich badaczy, jak Jeannine Blackwell, Thomas Fair, Michelle J. Smith.
The aim of the article is to remind Paulina Krakowowa's robinsonade Memories of the exile created in 1843, and to indicate the possible directions of its contemporary reading. The analysis covers the female characters appearing in the novel, their strategies accepted in the face of unfavorable circumstances, as well as the pro-civilizational actions undertaken already on the abandoned island. According to the author of the article these descriptions could have a double meaning for the Polish writer: both feminist and patriotic. A separate issue indicated in the sketch is the positioning of Krakowowa's work in the context of the Western European female Robinsonades of the nineteenth century which have been already the subject of attention of such researchers as e.g.Jeannine Blackwell, Thomas Fair, and Michelle Smith.

W niniejszym artykule przedmiotem uwagi jest kilka sposobów uobecniania się motywu wolności lub jej braku w powieściach Pauliny Wilkońskiej, reprezentantki literatury popularnej XIX wieku. Zagadnienie to omówiono w odniesieniu do trzech sfer. Pierwsza z nich wiąże się z tematyzacją pragnienia wolności i doświadczania niewoli narodowej. Druga dotyczy ograniczeń swobody podmiotu w przestrzeni społeczno-obyczajowej, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem sytuacji młodych ludzi poddanych przemocy przesądów i naciskom finansowym. Trzeci wymiar analizy obejmuje strategie wolności odautorskiej, wyrażające się w przyjemności pisania i jego autoterapeutycznej funkcji oraz wybranych zabiegach podtrzymujących więź z czytelnikiem. Bowiem to właśnie czytelnik jest tu traktowany jako niejawny, ale niezwykle ważny bohater prozy Wilkońskiej.
The main subject of this article is the several ways in which the motif of freedom, or the lack of it, is made present in the novels of Paulina Wilkońska, a representative of the 19th-century popular literature. The issue is discussed in relation to three aspects. The first is related to the thematization of the desire for freedom and the experience of national bondage. The second issue concerns the limitations of subjectivity in the social space, with particular attention to the situation of young people, enslaved by prejudices and financial pressures. The third dimension of the analysis includes strategies of authorial freedom, expressed in the pleasure of writing and its self-therapeutic function, as well as selected treatments that sustain the bond with the reader. For it is the reader who is treated here as the implicit but extremely important protagonist of Wilkońska's fiction.

The article is a description of an extensive novel by a Galician writer, Maria Pomezańska née Chłędowska, entitled Gertruda Komorowska and published in 1853 in Lviv. The analysis is based on a few issues. Firstly, the sources determining a particular variant of the story of the marriage between Szczęsny Potocki and Gertruda Komorowska and the crime committed against a young woman. Secondly, the way the heroes were created and their mutual emotional and psychological relationships. Thirdly, the motivations that prompted the writer to deal with the topic which was already known and described in literature at that time. The article leads to the conclusion that Pomezańska’s work refers to women’s historical anecdotes of the 18th and 19th centuries, but its goals are essentially feminist, also because the past is used to build a kind of female supplement to official history. Its widely known canvas was filled with the voice of women, overlooked or marginalized by male writers.

The subject of the article is a review of images of Venice recorded in Polish poetry between the years 1829–1870. The paper deliberately stops in the 1870s in the selection of the literary material to be analysed, focusing on the Romantic and post-Romantic tradition. Due to the different artistic value of the works, the author adopted the formula of a historical and literary “catalogue” ordered chronologically and partly problematicised according to the functions which Venetian scenery or culture perform in them. Attention is drawn to the fact that Venetian motifs present in the poetry of Polish artists tend to be related to particular phenomena and topics, such as Byronism, Gothicism, political and national camouflage, love and existential masks, conflict between people and power. The authors referred to in the paper include, among others, Adam Mickiewicz, Józef Ignacy Kraszewski, Zygmunt Krasiński, Edward Dembowski, Edmund Chojecki, Karol Baliński, Mieczysław Gwalbert Pawlikowski, Teofil Lenartowicz, Feliks Wicherski, Teofil Nowosielski, Aleksander Michaux and Wiktor Gomulicki.

The aim of the article was to describe the collection of manuscripts preserved in the family archives as a memorial to Sabina Grzegorzewska née Gostkowska, a 19th‑century writer, which are currently in the possession of The Scientific Library of the PAAS and the PAS in Cracow. That analysed archival legacy consists of various documents, which include a few letters, several rough drafts with notes and quotations on Grzegorzewska’s philosophical and religious lectures, excerpts from her dissertations, and drafts and fair copies of novels and memoirs. The article presented their content and material condition. The prospects for further processing of that legacy were also discussed. An important issue is the question on the importance of the task for the history of Polish literature of the 19th century, especially with regard to the creator of minorum gentium. According to the author of the article, it would be reasonable to link the methods of the analysis of avant-textes, adopted in genetic research, with the proposals of the so-called cultural genetics.
Celem artykułu jest prezentacja dokumentów rękopiśmiennych stanowiących spuściznę dziewiętnastowiecznej pisarki, Sabiny Grzegorzewskiej. Zespół materiałów, na który składają się listy, notatki z lektur, brudnopisy i czystopisy rozpraw, powieści oraz pamiętników, znajduje się aktualnie w zbiorach Biblioteki Naukowej PAU i PAN w Krakowie. Artykuł przedstawia wstępnie ich zawartość, stan materialny, związki z wersjami drukowanymi za życia autorki i tuż po jej śmierci, a także omawia perspektywy dalszych etapów opracowywania tej spuścizny. Ważną kwestią jest pytanie o znaczenie podjętego zadania dla historii polskiego piśmiennictwa XIX wieku, zwłaszcza w odniesieniu do twórcy minorum gentium. Zdaniem autora artykułu, zasadne byłoby powiązanie metod analizy przedtekstów, przyjętych w badaniach genetycznych, z propozycjami tzw. genetyki kulturowej.
