- The development of the eleven languages taught in the Language Centre at Gdańsk University of Technology mirrors the historical, political, social and economic changes in Poland, Pomerania and the Tri–City. The multilingual policy of the Language Centre follows these changes and, through enriching language learning opportunities, initiates new possibilities of international cooperation for Gdańsk University of Technology. The author identifies the social history of language as a starting point for the presented topic. The lecture presents a brief outline of the development of foreign language teaching at the technical university in Gdańsk to the year 1945, together with current achievements of the Language Centre at Gdańsk University of Technology in the sphere of didactics and promoting multilingualism. The author presents selected examples of the initiatives taken with regard to language teaching, with particular emphasis on most recent experience such as teaching Asiatic languages.
