Opis:
The paper discusses preparation and characteristics of silica hydrophobic layers deposited on the plasma-modified glass supports. The surfaces were investigated using wettability measurements, profilometry, photoacoustic and infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy as well as scanning electron microscopy. The wettability measurements showed that the obtained surfaces are hydrophobic – the water contact angle was in the range of 140-150 degrees. The photoacoustic and infrared spectroscopy as well as X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy disclosed the surface compositions, particularly that of the hydrophobic alkyl groups deposited on them. They were methyl groups introduced during hydrophobization by hexamethyldisilazane. In addition, it was found that the number of groups on the surface depends on the kind of plasma by which the supports were activated. The optical profilometer showed differences in the surface roughness which affects their hydrophobicity. Moreover, the surface free energies were determined using the contact angle hysteresis method. They disclosed differences in each surface, depending on the way of supports activation. The largest hydrophobicity was obtained on the layer deposited on the support activated by the argon plasma. However, support activation by the air plasma resulted in a decrease of hydrophobicity compared to that of the non-activated surface.

Opis:
The mixed $SiO_2$-$TiO_2$ oxide obtained by the pyrogenic method with the silica:titanium percentage ratio equal to 20:80 (ST80) was used in the experiments. The influence of azo dye C.I. Direct Yellow 142 (DY) adsorption at the mixed oxide-solution interface on the electrokinetic properties of solid particles was studied. To determine solid surface charge density and zeta potential of examined suspensions the potentiometric titration and Doppler laser electrophoresis techniques were applied. The changes in structure of electrical double layer formed on the mixed oxide surface in the dye presence were specified as a function of DY concentration, inorganic salt addition and surfactant introduction. The effects of surfactant type and its concentration were determined. Three surfactants of different ionic character (anionic SDS, cationic CTAB and nonionic Triton X-100) were used in measurements. The obtained electrokinetic characteristics of ST80 mixed oxide dispersed in aqueous solutions with various adsorbate compositions is essential for such suspensions stability.

Opis:
Two aspects of interfacial phenomena were discussed in the manuscript. The first one concerns the adsorptive removal of two azo dyes such as C.I. Acid Yellow 219 (AY219) and C.I. Direct Yellow 142 (DY142) as well as the phtalocyanine C.I. Reactive Blue 21 (RB21) on the alumina silicatitania oxide (4% wt. $Al_2O_3$ – 8% wt. $SiO_2$ – 88% wt. $TiO_2$; AST88) in the ionic surfactants presence. The second one deals with the determination of interaction mechanism in the dyes-AST88, dyes-surfactant-AST88 systems using the data obtained from the surface charge density and zeta potential studies. The sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) with anionic character and hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) with cationic ones were used. The adsorption capacities of 205.2 mg/g for AY219, 36.5 mg/g for RB21 and 18 mg/g for DY142. The potentiometric titration and Doppler laser electrophoresis methods enable determination of sign and magnitude of charge located in both the surface and the slipping plane layers around the solid particles. The structure of electrical double layer was determined in the AST88 systems without as well as with dyes and with mixed dye + surfactant adsorbates.

Opis:
A series of mixed oxides was synthesized by deposition of a guest phase on a highly dispersed oxide matrix. Fumed nanooxides SiO2, Al2O3, SiO2/Al2O3, and SiO2/Al2O3/TiO2 with the specific surface area of 65-91 m2/g were selected as highly dispersed matrices. NiO/FexOy was deposited as a guest oxide using solvate-stimulated modification of a surface of fumed nanocarriers with nickel nitrate and iron(III) formate and subsequent heat treatment up to 600 °C to form NiO/FexOy. The aim of this work was to study the influence of the composition and structure of fumed oxide matrices and deposited guest phase on the behavior of the composites in gaseous and aqueous media using XRD, nitrogen adsorption and SEM/EDX, and quasi-elastic light scattering (QELS) methods. The lowtemperature nitrogen adsorption isotherms have a sigmoid shape with a narrow hysteresis loop characteristic of mesoporous materials. The specific surface area of composites varies from 65 to 120 m2/g. SEM data show denser aggregate structure of nanocomposites compared to the initial carriers. The primary particle size was in the 30-60 nm range. According to QELS data, there is a tendency to form aggregates of 100 nm - 10 µm in size in the aqueous media. The XRD method shows that the deposited metal oxides are in the form of crystalline phases of NiO with crystallites of 7-23 nm in size, but the iron oxide reflexes were not identified for NiO-containing composites.
