Opis:
This paper presents simulation and laboratory test results of an implementation of an infinite control set model predictive control into a three-phase AC/DC converter. The connection between the converter and electric grid is made through an LCL filter, which is characterized by a better reduction of grid current distortions and smaller (cheaper) components in comparison to an L-type filter. On the other hand, this type of filter can cause strong resonance at specific current harmonics, which is efficiently suppressed by the control strategy focusing on the strict control input filter capacitors voltage vector. The presented method links the benefits of using linear control methods based on a space vector modulator and the nonlinear ones, which result in excellent control performance in a steady state as well as in a transient state.

Opis:
Frequency based methods developed to detect an islanding condition in modern power grid structures have been discussed. The condition may occur in power grid lines to which additional energy sources with power electronic converters have been connected such as solar panels or wind turbines. It is a hazardous operating state for grid workers and devices connected to the islanded part of the grid. Such a state results from the inability to control amplitude and frequency of basic harmonic of the grid voltage. An islanding problem in a power grid with additional small energy sources has been discussed. A basic passive and active islanding detection method have been presented and compared with known frequency based algorithms, namely active frequency drift and active frequency drift with a positive feedback algorithm. Finally, a laboratory test of the proposed islanding detection methods in a three-phase grid with an AC-DC converter has been conducted. To demonstrate differences between the tested methods, total harmonic distortion injected into the output converter current and detection time of islanding state have been measured.

An X-ray scanning and image processing have a vast range of applications in the security. An image of a content of some package being passed for example to an airplane or to the court house may help to figure out if there are any dangerous objects inside that package and to avoid possible threatening situation. As the raw X-ray images are not always easy to analyze and interpret, some image processing methods like an object detection, a frequency resolution increase or a pseudocolouring are being used. In this paper, we propose a pseudocoloring improvement over material based approach. By addition of the edge detection methods we fill and sharpen colour layers over the image, making it easier to interpret. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the methods using real data, acquired from a professional dual energy X-ray scanner.

Opis:
A method for manufacturing of Al-Si alloy (EN AC-44200) matrix composite materials reinforced with MAX type phases in Ti-Al-C systems was developed. The MAX phases were synthesized using the Self-propagating High-Temperature Synthesis (SHS) method in its microwave assisted mode to allow Ti2AlC and Ti3AlC2 to be created in the form of spatial structures with open porosity. Obtained structures were subjected to the squeeze casting infiltration in order to create a composite material. Microstructures of the produced materials were observed by the means of optical and SEM microscopies. The applied infiltration process allows forming of homogeneous materials with a negligible residual porosity. The obtained composite materials possess no visible defects or discontinuities in the structure, which could fundamentally deteriorate their performance and mechanical properties. The produced composites, together with the reference sample of a sole matrix material, were subjected to mechanical properties tests: nanohardness or hardness (HV) and instrumental modulus of longitudinal elasticity (EIT).

Opis:
Two methods were evaluated in terms of manufacturing of MAX phase preforms characterized with open porosity: microwave-assisted self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) and spark plasma sintering (SPS). The main purpose of fabrication of such open-porous preforms is that they can be successfully applied as a reinforcement in metal matrix composite (MMC) materials. In order to simulate the most similar conditions to microwave-assisted SHS, the sintering time of SPS was significantly reduced and the pressure was maintained at a minimum value. The chosen approach allows these two methods to be compared in terms of structure homogeneity, complete reactive charge conversion and energy effectivity. Study was performed in Ti-Al-C system, in which the samples were compacted from elemental powders of Ti, Al, C in molar ratio of 2:1:1. Manufactured materials after syntheses were subjected to SEM, XRD and STEM analyses in order to investigate their microstructures and chemical compositions. As was concluded, only microwave-assisted SHS synthesis allows the creation of MAX phases in the studied system. SPS technique led only to the formation of intermetallic secondary phases. The fabrication of MAX phases’ foams by microwave-assisted SHS presents some interesting advantages compared to conventional manufacturing methods. This work presents the characterization of foams obtained by microwave-assisted SHS comparing the results with materials produced by SPS. The analysis of SPS products for different sintering temperatures provided the better insight into the synthesis of MAX phases, supporting the established mechanism. Dissimilarities in the heating mechanisms that lead to the differing synthesis products were also discussed.

Investment casting combined with the additive manufacturing technology enables production of the thin-walled elements, that are geometrically complex, precise and can be easy commercialized. This paper presents design of aluminium alloy honeycombs, which are characterized with light structure, internal parallel oriented channels and suitable stiffness. Based on 3D printed pattern the mould was prepared from standard ceramic material subjected subsequently to appropriate heat treatment. Into created mould cavity with intricate and susceptible structure molten AC 44200 aluminium alloy was poured under low pressure. Properly designed gating system and selected process parameters enabled to limit the shrinkage voids, porosities and misruns. Compression examination performed in two directions showed different mechanisms of cell deformation. Characteristic plateau region of stress-strain curves allowed to determine absorbed energy per unit volume, which was 485 or 402 J/mm3 depending on load direction. Elaborated technology will be applied for the production of honeycomb based elements designated for energy absorption capability.

Opis:
Many plant species respond to the climate change reported in the recent decades, which is confirmed by the results of phenological and aerobiological investigations. This paper presents characteristics of the pollen seasons of Acer spp. revealed by aerobiological analyses performed with the volumetric method in Lublin, Poland in 2001-2015. Additionally, phenological observations of flowering of four Acer species, i.e., A. negundo, A. platanoides, A. campestre, and A. pseudoplatanus, were carried out in 2011-2012. The results indicate a slight upward trend in the annual totals of Acer pollen grains. Over the last 10 years, the annual totals of Acer pollen grains have increased in comparison to the previous 5-year period. Acceleration of the onset of pollen seasons and the dates of peak days was noted. The comparison of the pollen seasons and flowering phenology of four Acer species indicates that A. negundo and A. platanoides produce the highest concentrations of pollen grains, whereas the pollen of A. campestre and A. pseudoplatanus accounts for a significantly lower proportion of the pollen content in the air of Lublin.
Wiele gatunków roślin wykazuje reakcje na zmiany klimatyczne, które rejestrowane są w ostatnich dziesięcioleciach. Potwierdzają to wyniki badań fenologicznych i aerobiologicznych. W pracy przedstawiliśmy charakterystykę sezonów pyłkowych Acer ssp. na podstawie badań aerobiologicznych, przeprowadzonych metodą wolumetryczną w Lublinie w latach 2001-2015. Ponadto wykonaliśmy obserwacje fenologiczne, dotyczące kwitnienia w latach 2011-2012 czterech gatunków Acer: A. negundo, A. platanoides, A. campestre i A. pseudoplatanus.

Formation of self-assembling nanohills induced by irradiation of nanosecond Nd:YAG laser pulses on the Si0.7Ge0.3/Si hetero-epitaxial structures is reported. The atomic force microscope study of the irradiated surface morphology has shown a start of nanohills formation after laser irradiation of the intensity I=7.0 MW/cm2. The giant "blue shift" of photoluminescence spectra with maximum intensity in region of 700-800 nm (1.76 - 1.54 eV) is explained by the Quantum confinement effect in the nanohills. The maximum of this photoluminescence band slightly shifts to shorter wavelengths with the increase of the intensity of laser pulses used for sample treatment. Appearance of the 300 cm-1 Ge-Ge vibration band in Raman scattering spectra for sample irradiated with I=20.0MW/cm2 is explained by Ge phase formation. Formation of the Ge-rich phase is explained by localization of Ge atoms drifting toward the irradiated surface under the thermal gradient due to strong absorption of laser radiation.

Opis:
Introduction: Exercise at various durations and intensities impact on blood and stem cells. This pilot study examined the effects of 30 minutes of treadmill walking on hematological indices and progenitor stem cells CD34+ in healthy subjects. Materials and methods: A total of 17 non-smoking, healthy students, aged 20 to 22 years participated. Hemoglobin, hematocrit, white blood cells, platelets, and stem cell CD34+ numbers were assessed before and after moderate exercise. Statistical analyses examined the relationships between CD34+ cells versus hematological indices, age, and body mass index. Results: Following exercise, significant increases were observed in leukocytes, neutrophils, eosinophils, and CD34+ cells numbers. For CD34+ cells, a fourfold increase was seen. Significant correlations between CD34+ cells, white blood cells, and neutrophils were found. Conclusion: Our results suggest that moderate exercise has a physiological impact on hematologic parameters and stem cells CD34+ in healthy subjects. Furthermore, our findings suggest that brief treadmill exercise may enhance tissue repair mechanisms so important in physiotherapy.
