Opis:
In the era of dynamic climate change, it is important to have knowledge on the interactions between climatic factors and processes occurring in the soil environment. The present study aimed to determine how slope aspect and altitude above sea level influence carbon and nitrogen accumulation and dehydrogenases activity of forest soils. The study was conducted in the Beskid Żywiecki in the south-facing part of Poland. Soils of the same texture, with similar vegetation species composition, in different altitude variants (600, 800, 1000 and 1200 m above sea level) and different north-facing and south-facing slope aspect were selected for the study. For each height and slope aspect variant, samples were collected from the surface horizons of soils for further analyses. The basic chemical properties and dehydrogenases activity of the soil samples were determined. Carbon and nitrogen stocks in the surface horizons of the soils were calculated. The analyses confirmed the influence of location conditions on the carbon and nitrogen stocks in mountain forest soils. The stock of carbon and nitrogen increased with the height up to 1000 m a.s.l. In the soils at the highest altitude, the reserve of carbon and nitrogen decreased regardless of the slope aspect variant. There were no statistically significant differences in carbon and nitrogen stocks between slope aspect variant. The highest dehydrogenases activity was associated with the organic horizons of the soils at the lowest altitude in height gradient. In our study, higher dehydrogenases activity was observed in the north-facing slope soils, and this finding can be explained by more stable thermal conditions.

The aim of the study was to present the main characteristics of the “Glinki” research area together with results of the first measurements on tree number, density, distribution and species composition carried out in 2011. The research was conducted in a free-of-forest management part of the Toruń military area which is located in one of the biggest inland dune fields of Europe. The “Glinki” research area was established in 2011 and consists of two plots (together 26.3 ha), which are in close proximity to each other. After the last fire in 1991, secondary succession has been the main factor shaping vegetation on both plots. For every plot, the location of all trees of at least 1 m height (560 in plot I and 292 in plot II) was determined. These measurements were subjected to spatial analysis in ArcGIS 9.3 with special emphasis on the exposure of the dune slopes. The main tree species on both plots were Scots pine, Pinus sylvestris, and birch, Betula pendula, (82 % and 17 % of all trees respectively). Tree density 20 years after the last fire was very low (32 trees/ha), which mainly resulted from the lack of a sufficient source of seeds in the close vicinity of the plots during the first years after the fire. We also found that tree distribution was related to the main direction of seed inflow and land relief. Tree density was much higher on dune slopes with a northern exposure when compared to other slope exposures, which resulted from different site conditions on the different slopes.

Long distance dispersal is a key process occurring in plant communities and is particularly important for pioneer species like sea-buckthorn (Hippophaë rhamnoides L.) which survival strongly depends on colonizing newly created post-disturbance habitats. Sea-buckthorn, a cluster-forming shrub, is commonly used in Poland in the reclamation of soil-less areas devastated the by mining industry and for these areas a generative expansion of planted populations is usually observed. The main objective of this study was to assess the long-distance dispersal of this species in areas previously disturbed by industrial activity. Our observations were made on a 223.75 ha large section of the internal waste heap of the Bełchatów lignite mine, Central Poland. The area was colonized by sea-buckthorn specimens originating from a population planted on the nearby external waste heap. During the search for newly established sea-buckthorn clusters, their position and size were recorded and the preferences for specific site conditions were assessed using the Ivlev's electivity index. New specimen were observed at distances between 600 m and 3600 m from their potential seed source. The mean cluster density was 1.37 ha-1. The observed pattern of long distance dispersal is linked with to behavior of frugivorous birds. The largest cluster densities were observed along ditches (9.83 ha-1) and on open areas with less developed plant cover, while the lowest cluster density occurred in afforested areas (0.51 ha-1). Poor sandy substrate reduced the probability of plant establishment compared to richer loamy sands. There appeared to be no influence of slope aspect on the probability of sea-buckthorn establishment.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to determine the impact of land relief on site index and growth parameters (height, diameter, slenderness) of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) stands on inland dunes in the Toruń Basin (N Poland). The study was conducted on 150 plots situated on north− and south−facing dune slopes (54 pairs of twin plots) as well as in intra−dune depressions (42 plots). Height and diameter of ten the thickest pines per 0.1 hectare was measured, and next site index as a potential height of a stand at the age of 100 years was calculated. As the results of the used equation, site index was strongly (R²=0.58) negatively biased to age, so the bias was removed using an elaborated regression model. For stands older than ca. 20 years, the clear higher site index values as well as higher heights and diameters were found for intra−dune depressions than for slopes of the two studied aspects. This was explained by the occurrence of much more fertile and moister soils in depressions. The only age class for which the advantage of site index and growth parameters was not stated for depressions was the youngest class (≤20 years old). This was likely caused by the competitive impact on young pines of Calamagrostis epigejos which prefers intra−dune depressions on inland dunes and forms in forest floor usually dense cover in this position. Impact of contrasting slope aspect was clearly related in the study to age of a stand. For the youngest studied age class both site index values as well as heights and diameters were lower on north− than on south−facing slopes. This was explained by the effect of weeds which form more dense cover on slopes of this aspect than on sunny slopes. For older stands; however higher site index values as well as heights and diameters were revealed for north−facing slopes, due to pines likely took advantage of higher moisture of soils occurring in this place. With reference to slenderness, regardless stand age the parameter was regularly the highest for north− than both for south−facing slopes and depressions. Because of the revealed distinct higher productivity of intra−dune depressions in normally dry and poor in nutrients dune landscape, it could be reasonable to use the depressions to introduce admixtures of broadleaved tree species into pine monocultures on inland dunes.

The influence of slope exposure and altitude on the height of trees in the stands of the Carpathian beech forest Dentario glandulosae-Fagetum in the lower montane zone in the Bieszczady National Park. The aim of the study was to investigate the influence of slope exposure and elevation above sea level on the average height of trees in the stands of the Carpathian beech forest Dentario Glandulosae-Fagetum in the lower montane zone of the Bieszczady National Park. The research material consisted of measurements made as part of a grid of permanent research plots of the Bieszczady National Park with a size of 4 ares, arranged in a grid of squares with a spacing of 500 x 500 m. Using a two-factor analysis of variance, the average height of beech trees in two height zones (600-800 and 800-1000 m above sea level) and at two slope exposures (north and south) were compared. The influence of the interaction between the two factors was also studied. The height of beech stands was mainly determined by the altitude and the interaction between the exposure of the slope and the altitude. It was not found that the exposure of the slope significantly differentiated the average heights of beech trees in the lower montane zone in the Bieszczady National Park.

Nie stwierdzono by ekspozycja stoku istotnie różnicowała średnie wysokości buków w reglu dolnym w Bieszczadzkim Parku Narodowym.

Opis:
Geographic Information Systems offer many algorithms that allow analysis of digital elevation models. They work with both GRID and TIN data, but they are limited to 2.5D models, where one planar (X,Y) position refers to only one vertical (Z) value. In mountainous regions, however, many steep, vertical and even overhung parts of rock walls and slopes occur. GRID and TIN models in a standard projection are not capable to deal with such a relief as they are not able to capture all complexity of steep slopes that can be observed from the terrestrial perspective. Such a perspective can be introduced into GIS via computer graphics software that allows 3D surface modelling by means of mesh, e.g. 3D triangular network. The paper presents a concept that implements 3D mesh in GIS and utilizes vector algebra to analyze such a surface. The idea is based on using normal vectors to compute slope and aspect of each triangle in a mesh. The computed values are saved as their attributes. Complete procedures are written in Python programming language and implemented into popular GIS software to work as a plug-in tool.

The impact of coal exploitation on the geological layers of the earth is closely related to mining activities and this activity has been quite pronounced considering the topographical changes of the green space together with the vegetation that would directly affect the degradation of agricultural lands. The soil is the environmental medium with irreparable damages from the activity of coal exploitation for the location where the Sibovc mine is located, which is characterized by the physical disappearance of the pedological profile of the soil such as the ecosystem, etc. and that represents the most serious form of damage to her. The purpose and importance of this paper is the biological recultivation of the area degraded by coal exploitation, based on the height of the scale H and the angle α° of the slope of the clay layers with the safety factor allowed for determining the humus layer for the cover of the degraded area, physical and chemical analyzes were performed based on the samples that were taken in the open profiles in the field, it was planned to plant saplings (trees) that will have a positive effect on the prevention of soil erosion, the enrichment of the air with O2, the reduction of the amount of CO2 in the air, the prevention of the distribution of dust in the environment, the size of the passage and from the geotechnical point of view, the prevention of humus soil landslides. The planned recultivation of the plot will start from the level of quota 570, 580 and 590 m, covering an area of about 17 hectares.

Opis:
Do porównania przyjęto ponadto następujące wielkości pikseli (oczek rastra): 1, 5, 10, 25, 50 i 100 m.
Digital terrain models (DTM) have become one of the basic and most commonly used sources of data describing the shape of the Earth. Numeric terrain models are only reality models, not the ideal projections. Inseparable elements of terrain models, like in all other groups of spatial data, are mistakes, which exist in the data. There are different methods of acquiring DTM that contribute errors. Some of the most popular methods are: photogrammetric measurements, contour lines, laser scanning (LIDAR), and interferometric (InSAR). Each of them changes data in some other way, using various algorithms. An additional source of mistakes in terrain models using the raster format is the size of the smallest field for which the specified altitude has been defined. The raster model resolution is one of the main features determining the accuracy of terrain projection. The aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of chosen terrain models to their application in environment geography studies. This analysis has been used to show the influence of resolution and models of data acquisition for NTM on the accuracy of the terrain model itself, and also on terrain slopes and expositions calculated on its basis. Created models used for the above-mentioned methods were compared. Moreover, the following raster pixels sizes were used for this comparison: 1, 5, 10, 25, 50 and 100 m. The maximal resolution (1 m), is close to the real accuracy of laser measurements. The minimal resolution (100 m) is close to the resolution of the SRTM model. Such a variation of analyzed resolutions makes it possible to observe quite “fluently” how the size and character of mistakes change in separate models. The study area is a 2×2 km test polygon covering part of the Vistula river and its valley and is located near Torun, Poland. The obtained results show the method of collecting data has an essential influence on the accuracy of DTM, especially for high resolution models. Along with a decrease in resolution, differences between models created using separate methods also decrease. For slope models, the collected results show that models with the biggest possible resolution should be used, not smaller than 10 meters. The most essential errors in the definition of aspect are connected with areas with the smallest slopes and are relatively flat.
