Opis:
The research goal was to develop an improved water purification technology for public reservoirs by adding the vibrocavitation purification before a reagent method with sodium hypochlorite, produced via electrolysis of salt. The main tasks of the research include the determination of vibrocavitation treatment efficiency and the development of a new low-frequency vibration resonance cavitation process for water purification, as well as equipment for this process. The vibroresonance method supporting the intensity of spatial displacements of cavitation exciters was developed on the basis of the theory of cavitation fields in liquids. While using this method, it was possible to establish the boundary conditions for stable support of the cavitation field created by low-frequency vibrations. The developed method is based on the formation of high intensive cavitation fields in liquids by vibratory decks. The advanced technological scheme of water purification for pools and public use reservoirs was proposed, which includes the addition of resonance vibrocavitators to a closed circulation cycle of water purification with the reagent method.

Opis:
Processes of water purification from phosphates using a low-pressure reverse osmosis membrane were studied. It was shown that the concentration of phosphates in the permeate largely depends on their initial concentration in the water and increases along with the degree of permeate selection. It was established that when using the Filmtec TW3–1812–50 membrane for phosphate concentrations up to 20 mg/dm3, their concentration in the permeate does not exceed 2.5 mg/dm3 with a degree of permeate selection up to 90% when cleaning solutions in distilled and artesian water. This value is below the permissible level for drinking water. When the concentration of phosphates increases to 100 and 1000 mg/dm3, their content in the permeate increases sharply to the values significantly higher than the permissible level in both drinking and wastewater. When sodium orthophosphate was added to artesian water, the effectiveness of its purification on this membrane with respect to chlorides, sulfates, hardness ions, and hydrocarbons was high. This indicates that the cartridges with these membranes can be used both in industrial installations and in households for further purification of artesian and tap water to drinking water quality.

The use of phytomeliorant plants is one of the promising trends in environmental biotechnology to purify waste water. The study was carried out to understand the phytomeliorative qualities of plants of the indigenous flora of the Turkestan Region under controlled conditions and to develop a method for treating wastewater. It was established that the use of a three-stage treatment of municipal wastewater using phytomeliorant plants: Ceratophуllum demersum L., Potamogeton trichoides Cha. Et Schlecht., Potamogeton pectinatus L., Potamogeton natans L.; Cardamine densiflora N. Gontsch., Sium sizaroideum DC.; Veronica beccabunga L, Veronica anagallis aquatica L. and Azolla caroliniana Willd for 30 days of the controlled experiment reduces the content of organic and mineral ingredients to the MPC values. A method for phyto-meliorative wastewater treatment of one of the sanatoriums in the south of Kazakhstan was developed and carried out in multi-stage bioponds, where water was purified from mineral and organic compounds by 94.9 ± 8.3 – 98.9 ± 7.8% in 12 days. In this study, first of all, nitrogenous compounds were utilized, then there was an active absorption of mineral ions and residual organic matter by plants. In conclusion, significant purification of wastewater was achieved by using indigenous phytomeliorant plants in much shorter time period.

Opis:
Carbon can form different structures with TiO2: carbon-doped TiO2, carbon coated TiO2 and composites of TiO2 and carbon. The presence of carbon layer on the surface of TiO2 as well as the presence of porous carbon in the composites with TiO2 can increase the concentration of organic pollutants on the surface of TiO2, facilitating the contact of the reactive species with the organic molecules. Carbon-doped TiO2 can extend the absorption of the light to the visible region by the narrowing of the band gap and makes the photocatalysts active under visible light irradiation. TiO2 loaded carbon can also work as a photocatalyst, on which the molecules are adsorbed in the pores of carbon and then they undergo the photocatalytic decomposition with UV irradiation. Enhanced photocatalytic activity for the destruction of some organic compounds in water was noticed on the carbon coated TiO2 and TiO2 loaded activated carbon, mostly because of the adsorptive role of carbon. However, in carbon-doped TiO2, the role of carbon is somewhat different, the replacement of carbon atom with Ti or oxygen and formation of oxygen vacancies are responsible for extending its photocatalytic activity towards the visible range.

The aim of the presented work was the removal of organic dye, Acid Red 18, from water using a novel reactor with the photoactive refill. Titanium dioxide was immobilized on the base material as a thin layer from the alcoholic suspension followed by thermal stabilization. The prepared coating exhibits high stability in repeated cycles of water treatment. The complete removal of colour was achieved in a relatively short time of 14 hours. The proposed reactor with the photoactive refill solves the problem of the necessity of the replacement of the reactor or parts of the reactor when the photocatalysts activity decreases. In the case of activity drop of the photocatalyst, only the photoactivve refill can be easily replaced.

Opis:
The photocatalytic process of phenol oxidation and Cr(VI) reduction in the presence of nano-silica modified titania was carried out. The activity of composites was tested using two different light sources. The photocatalysts with 10% of nanosilica showed the highest activity. The calcination temperature (200–800 °C) significantly determined the sensitivity of the obtained materials to the light source used. Photocatalysts alternately adsorbed and desorbed Cr(VI) ions from the reaction mixture during irradiation. In the one-component mixture, complete oxidation of phenol was observed using material calcined at 650 °C, after 3 h of UV-VIS irradiation. In the reaction mixture of Cr(VI) and phenol, the highest activity was demonstrated by photocatalyst calcined at 300 °C. The concentration of phenol decreased in proportion to the decrease of chromium ions. The obtained titania-silica composites showed oxidizing properties towards phenol and reductive properties toward Cr(VI) ions.

This work is devoted to mine wastewater purification from metal ions, such as copper, zinc, lead, cadmium, iron, and manganese. The rationale was provided for the possibility to purify the wastewater from metal ions with nonactivated and ultra-dispersed natural sorbents. The adsorption capacity of bentonite clay from Tagan deposit and shungite from Koksui deposit of the Republic of Kazakhstan was studied on the basis of its fraction composition. It was found that the most effective method of sorbents modification was mechanical activation. The comparative studies of metal ions adsorption efficiency were carried out with mechanically activated and ultra-dispersed bentonite clay and shungite. The experiment enabled to find out that ultra-dispersed bentonite clay is prospective for use in order to deeply purify multicomponent mine wastewater. The highest degree of metal ions extraction was achieved due to 30-minutes contact of wastewater.

The study was conducted with the purpose of experimentally developing the method of water purification from ions of cadmium (II) using a new design of a bio-plateau, which is based on the use of terrestrial plants. In order to construct the bio–plateau, the following chemically inert floating materials were used as the substrate: perlite, expanded clay, granular foam, vermiculite, cork, on top of which the seeds of higher terrestrial plants were placed. The experimental data showed that foam was the best of the tested substrates, and of plants – barley, oats, corn and rye. The constructed bio-plateau was placed into tanks with a solution of cadmium on the 9th day of incubation to study the cleaning efficiency of terrestrial plants on the aquatic environment. Determination of the residual concentration of cadmium was performed with the method of AAC at λ=228.8. As a result, it was found that rye showed the best sorption properties of the tested plants. The influence of additional aeration and pH of the medium on the degree of water purification was established. The highest treatment efficiency was observed in the variant of a bio-plateau with aeration and at a pH of 8-9. The study shows the possibility of using terrestrial plants for the phytoremediation of water bodies.

Opis:
The process of extracting nitrates from water by the methods of reverse osmosis and ion exchange was investigated in the paper. In the formation of reverse osmosis, low-pressure membranes were used, and in ion-exchange processes, highly alkaline anionite AB–17–8 was applied in salt form. The dynamics of changes in the concentration of nitrates in the permeate and the concentration with an increase in the degree of permeate selection from 9 to 90% at initial nitrate concentrations of 18, 50 and 100 mg/dm3 were determined. The indicators of selectivity and productivity of membranes were calculated depending on the degree of permeate selection. It was shown that the low-pressure reverse osmosis membrane is characterized by low selectivity values at high productivity values in the selected part of the nitrate concentration. It was established that the ion exchange method is significantly more effective than reverse osmosis in removing nitrates from water. It ensures the reduction of nitrate content in purified water to a value of less than 1 mg/dm3 when the degree of their extraction is reached at the level of 99%. As the ionite is saturated with nitrates, the efficiency of their extraction decreases. Anionite sorbs nitrates effectively enough, being both in the chloride mixture and in the sulfate form. Nitrates are effectively desorbed by 2H solutions of sodium chloride and sodium or ammonium sulfate.

Zaprezentowano rezultaty badań nad wykorzystaniem adsorpcyjnych właściwości wybranych pylistych węgli aktywnych do usuwania z wody zemulgowanego oleju maszynowego Mixol S metodą koagulacji. Osady uzyskiwane w wyniku prowadzonych testów z koagulantem podstawowym i węglami, w przeciwieństwie do osadów pochodzących tylko z samodzielnie stosowanych koagulantów, były o dużo większej gęstości i mniej uwodnione. Tworzyły szlam, łatwy do usunięcia i możliwy do regeneracji poprzez odwodnienie, wysuszenie i wyprażenie.
The paper presents the results of research related to removal of oil emulsion (on base of 'Mixol S') from water solution in coagulation process. The selected powdery activated carbons were used as aid reagents by reason of adsorptive properties refer to organic compounds. The research was realized on model emulsion. Carried microscopic observation has showed that oil drops were smaller than 3.0 μm. It testified that objective emulsion could be described as fine-dispersion emulsion. The solutions have pH values in the range 6.5÷7.0. The following reagents were applied in the research tests: powdery activated carbon Organosorb 200-1 Wi (PWA 1), Organosorb 100-1 (PWA 2), as well as basic coagulants - i.e. iron(III) chloride FeCl3 · 6H2O and aluminum sulfate, Al2(SO4)3 · 18H2O. The tests were conducted in series, depending on the dose of powdery activated carbon and the type of basic coagulants. In case of PWA 1 (powder wood carbon) employment, removal of oil from water solution was considerable but not completely satisfactory. Final concentration of oil Mixol in water has amounted to C = 26 mg/dm3. It gets it at dose aluminum D = 90 mg/dm3 and 0.5 g/dm3 active carbon. When both coagulants were used the 'Organosorb 100-1' (PWA 2) powdery activated carbon exhibited higher effectiveness in removal of Mixol oil from water. The highest oil reduction, i.e. 97% (Ck = 12 mg/dm3), from its initial concentration of C0 = 360 mg/dm3, was obtained for 150 mg/dm3 of Al2(SO4)3 and for PWA 2 powdery activated carbon dosed at 0.2 g/dm3. Coagulation assisted by the adsorption process appeared to be a more effective method of water purification from oil emulsions, while aluminum salts were better coagulants. The big advantage of using powdery activated carbon (i.e. the combination of coagulation and adsorption processes), was a better quality of post-coagulation sediments. Unlike the sediments formed from coagulant used alone, the sediments obtained as a result of tests with basic coagulant and carbons had much higher density and contained less water. The sludge formed by the latter was easy to remove and could be regenerated by dewatering, drying and roasting.

Anthropogenic eutrophication is the greatest threat to surface waters not only in Poland, but also in Europe and around the world. Facing the fact that economic and biospheric functions of aquatic eco-systems are inevitably endangered, measures have been taken to search for effective solutions of reducing the nutrients content in surface waters, which would inhibit the eutrophication processes. The awareness of the vast and underestimated role of small watercourses and reservoirs in rural areas and their natural functions, where a contribution to undertake research on the use of filtration systems using natural zeolites to improve the biochemical parameters of these waters. Taking into considera-tion the recent development of adsorption techniques the authors’ attention was directed to analyzing porous minerals including natural zeolites, such as clinoptilolite. Tests were carried out using the im-mersed reactor system with biomass immobilized on the surface of clinoptilolite – a natural zeolite. Water used for the tests came from a model, biologically active reservoir. Chemical tests using the colorimetric method, revealed the concentration of nitrogen compounds in the water, allowing the au-thors to estimate the effectiveness of nitrogen compounds extraction. Based on the conducted studies, it was found that clinoptilolite can be used as bed material in the process of removing nitrogen com-pounds, in order to restore self-purification capabilities of surface waters.

Opis:
One of the most important technological processes of water treatment is the process of filtration. Scientists and producers keep on searching new filtration materials which allow for better water purification, are simple in exploitation and do not add chemical substances to the treated water. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to analyze physical and chemical parameters of two unknown porous masses X1 and X2. Such physical parameters as color, granulation, bulk density, the equivalent diameter, the coefficient of uniformity and the porosity of the material were measured and determined. Additionally, the possibility of water treatment was studied during the filtration process in the laboratory tests. Chemical parameters were examined in the water flowing through the mass, such as pH, conductivity and COD-Mn as a general indicator of the content of organic substances in the water. Both studied porous masses were characterized by uniform size of particles. But they were not efficient enough in satisfactory reduction of oxygen consumption. Mass X2 slightly better adsorbed organic substances. It was found that the tested unknown mass filter slightly increase the pH of the filtered water.
