Opis:
The article explores the problem of nursing as a practical discipline and suggests that there are several kinds of nursing science. Following the lead of Jacques Maritain and Yves R. Simon, the authoress begins with an account of the distinguishing characteristics of theoretical knowledge, to which the term “science” has historically been applied, and distinguishes it from practical knowledge or prudence. Next she reviews Maritain and Simon’s discussion of two intermediate levels of inquiry that share some characteristics of both science and practical knowledge. Finally, using the writings of several nurse theorists whose seminal ideas in this area have established a basis for nurse theorist’s discussion of these issues, she distinguishes four kinds of nursing inquiry which range from the very theoretical to the very practical.

MISSCARE Survey
Opis:
The main aims of the study were to explore the frequency of missed nursing care (MNC) among Czech hospital nurses, and to find the relationship between nurse’s job satisfaction and MNC.Material and MethodsThe sample consisted of 513 nurses from 9 hospitals in the Czech Republic. Data were collected in January–August 2019 using the standardized MISSCARE Survey questionnaire, complemented with items assessing nurse’s job satisfaction and demographic data.ResultsThe most frequently missed nursing activities were patient ambulation and emotional support to the patient and/or family. The surveyed nurses were most satisfied with being a nurse and least satisfied with the level of teamwork on their unit. The strongest correlation was found between satisfaction with the current position and satisfaction with being a nurse; there was a negative correlation between satisfaction with the current position and the overall level of MNC. There was a significant trend between the rating of satisfaction with the current position and MNC.ConclusionsNurse’s job satisfaction is associated with the level of nursing care provided; more missed care means more dissatisfaction among nurses. Opis:
Autorka podejmuje kwestie dotyczące osób starszych w zakresie potrzeb opiekuńczych. Proces starzenia się ludności doprowadził do przesunięcia do typowej struktury dla populacji starej. Według szacunków GUS w 2030 r. 800 tysięcy Polaków osiągnie wiek 85 lat i więcej, a wraz z wiekiem następuje pogorszenie stanu zdrowotnego ludności przez choroby przewlekłe, niepełnosprawności.
The concern of elderly people and theirs caring needs is elaborated in this paper. The aging process for humanity has led to the shift of typical structure towards the old population pattern. In 2030, according to the Polish Central Statistical Office, 800,000 Poles will reach the age of 85 and more, whereas the health state of humanity is worsening with age, i.e. chronic diseases, disabilities. Family and relatives provide support for elderlies, but they may not follow up with nursing duties all the time, because it collides with theirs family and professional life, as well as residential place. Informal support networks, friends and neighbours support the family or relatives in the provision of nursing services. People requiring all-day care as a result of age, disease or disability pursue the services of nursing homes. The aging process for humanity and small changes in the quantity of multi-municipal nursing homes has leads to still significant number of people expecting for location in such nursing homes. Nursing concerns of elderly people currently require a search for new institutional and organisational solutions, as well as another insight into the concern of the aging society.

Aim: To determine the problems that midwifery and nursing students face in a neonatal care unit. Materials and methods: The study was carried out with 179 third-year students, out of 204 in a Health Sciences Faculty, Department of Midwifery and Nursing, who agreed to participate in this study. The data were collected by using a sociodemographic information form and a questionnaire form. These forms included questions on the feelings that student nurses experienced in a neonatal care for the first time and the reasons behind them. Percentage, mean, median, and chi-square tests were used to evaluate the data. Results: In this study, 88.8% of the participants were female and 45.8% of them had chosen their departments at their own will. Among them, 73.7% were excited and 38.5% were frightened to provide care to a neonate for the first time. In addition, 66.5% of nursing students were afraid of causing harm to the neonate. Moreover, 54.7% of student nurses felt that a neonate was too small to handle. Furthermore, 43.6% of the participants had the fear of dropping the neonate, while 39.7% of them had never given care to a neonate before. A statistically significant number of participants did not feel like touching while giving care to the neonate (p < 0.05). These feelings were reported by following types of participants: male midwifery and student nurses, who had chosen their departments at their own will, and student nurses who were not willing to work in neonatal care units after graduation (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The results of this study showed that midwifery and nursing students have difficulties in handling and giving care a neonate for the first time. This is because they got excited and frightened during their neonatal practice.

As a major challenge of a social, economic, and institutional nature, the phenomenon of population ageing is the basis for concern in terms of the direction of further socioeconomic development. By the year 2050, the number of older people around the world will amount to more than 2 billion, constituting 22% of the total population. Over 75, people are faced with increased risk of disability (physical and mental), which can deprive of independent existence. The welfare system will not only have to meet the growing demand for nursing homes, but also the increasing requirements for the safety and quality of services. The innovation of nursing homes will be conditional on the learning of the units of this sector. The scientific goal of the pursued study was to evaluate the influence of learning orientation on the innovation of nursing homes in Poland. Learning orientation has been the subject of the Author’s interest in the context of four constructs: (i) commitment to learning, (ii) shared vision, (iii) open-mindedness, and (iv) intra-organisational knowledge sharing. The article presents the results of a quantitative research conducted on a sample of 169 nursing homes in Poland. The study aimed to examine relationships between the four constructs of learning orientation and organisational innovativeness of nursing homes in Poland. The regression model confirmed the existing statistically significant positive relationship between open-mindedness and organisational innovativeness.
