Opis:
In this work, we describe a new method for assessing the refractive correction error in power corrected ophthalmic lenses. The ideal power distribution map corresponding to the lens design to be measured is initially obtained. Then, using some known techniques, the real power distribution map of the lens under test is obtained. Finally, the difference between the two distributions is computed, obtaining a distribution map of the refractive correction error of the lens under analysis. In the paper, we describe the implementation of the proposed method using the Hartmann test to analyze a corrected power ophthalmic lens. The technique is analyzed, and its effects on measurement resolution discussed. This method can be useful to verify the designing errors in the lab or to verify manufacturing errors of ophthalmic lenses during mass production.

Opis:
The effect of copper stress on betacyanin accumulation and guaiacol peroxidase (GPOD) activity in leaves of different age was evaluated in red beet (Beta vulgaris L. var. Crosby Egyptian) plants. In hydroponic culture, plants were treated with 0.3 μM (control), 50 μM, 100 μM, and 250 μM of CuSO4 for 6 days. Copper was taken up and accumulated in old roots but was not translocated to leaves. However in young leaves, the increase of lipid peroxidation and reduction of growth were evident from day 3 of copper exposure; whereas in old leaves, the lipid peroxidation and growth were the same from either copper-treated or control plants. In response to copper exposure, the betacyanin accumulation was evident in young leaves by day 3, and continued to increase until day 6. Betacyanin only were accumulated in old leaves until day 6, but the contents were from 4 to 5 times lower than those observed in young leaves at the same copper concentrations. GPOD activity increased 3.3- and 1.4-fold in young and old leaves from day 3 of copper treatment respectively, but only in the young leaves was sustained at the same level until day 6. Old roots shown betacyanin in the control plants, but the betacyanin level and growth were reduced with the copper exposure. In contrast, young roots emerged by copper effect also accumulated copper and showed the highest betacyanin content of all plant parts assayed. These results indicate that betacyanin accumulation and GPOD activity are defense responses to copper stress in actively growing organs.

Opis:
The highly infectious African swine fever virus (ASFV) is currently the only known DNA arbovirus within the Asfarviridae family which primarily infects domestic pigs and wild boars. African swine fever (ASF) leads to a mortality rate of up to 100% which has caused massive socio-economic losses worldwide. Previous research indicates that ASFV’s virulence can be attributed to polyprotein pp62, which plays a crucial role in viral assembly and core maturation. This particular study utilized in silico analysis to identify highly conserved cytotoxic T-cell epitopes in pp62 that can potentially serve as key components for future ASFV vaccines. To achieve this, the researchers retrieved, clustered, and aligned the peptide sequences of pp62. Subsequently, the aligned sequences were analyzed to identify epitopes that bind promiscuously to the swine major histocompatibility complex I (MHC I) alleles and exhibiting MHC IC50 values < 500 nM. Additionally, peptide sequences with positive proteasome and TAP scores were considered. Potential cross-reactivity was assessed by comparing the peptide sequences against available proteome sequences of Sus scrofa domesticus in various databases. Furthermore, molecular docking was conducted to evaluate the binding of candidate epitopes with swine leukocyte antigen-1*0401 (SLA-1*0401). The dissociation constants, binding energies, root mean square deviation, and root mean square fluctuation values for the SLA-epitope complexes were compared with a positive reference. In the course of the study, 21 highly conserved CD8+ epitopes were identified, out of which four were further assessed for their potential immunogenicity. The results demonstrated that the highly conserved CD8+ epitopes discovered in this study are promising for integration into future ASFV vaccine formulations. As preliminary data, it is anticipated that these findings will subsequently undergo in vitro and in vivo studies in the future.

Nowadays we are continuously bombarded with a lot of information, and because of it we have serious problems with accessing the relevant information, that is, we suffer from the information overload problems. Recommender systems have been applied successfully to avoid the information overload in different domains, but the number of electronic resources daily generated keeps growing and the problem rises again. Therefore, we find a persistent problem of information overload. In this paper we propose an improved recommender system to avoid the persistent information overload found in a University Digital Library. The idea is to include a memory to remember selected resources but not recommended to the user, and in such a way, the system could incorporate them in future recommendations to complete the set of filtered resources, for example, if there are a few resources to be recommended or if the user wishes output obtained by combination of resources selected in different recommendation rounds.

We re−describe the type material of the tiny African tragulid “Dorcatherium” moruorotensis from the early Miocene of Kenya, and erect the new genus Afrotragulus, the first African Miocene tragulid that does not belong to Dorcatherium. This new taxon is characterized by its elongated and stretched lower molars with a unique morphological dental pattern that strongly contrasts with that of Dorcatherium. We additionally include the former “Dorcatherium” parvum, also a small species from the early Miocene of Kenya, into the new genus Afrotragulus as Afrotragulus parvus, figuring it for the first time. We discuss the usefulness of body size as the main taxonomical criterion for studying the Tragulidae. And finally we comment on the taxonomical and morphological diversity of tragulids in the moment of their sudden early Miocene re−apparition and expansion in the Old World.

This paper offers an analysis of ideological discourse from a constructivist perspective, according to which reality is interpreted as the socially constructed product of different agents interacting on an individual, subjective basis in a particular socio-political context, and in relation to a specifi c social action. This theoretical and methodological approach also highlights the importance of the relationship between the fi eld of discourse analysis and those of rhetoric and argumentation (and semiotics, where the discourse is multimodal), and complexity studies. The paper uses data from an ethnographic study of a social collective created a year before the 15M movement: the Cooperativa Integral Catalana (‘Catalan Integral Cooperative’), an eco-social economic initiative based on a new form of self-managed cooperativism.

The Anchitheriinae are a group of browsing horses with a widespread distribution throughout the Miocene. The subfamily includes the genera Hypohippus, Megahippus, Kalobatippus, Anchitherium, and Sinohippus. In the present paper we compare the remains of a giant anchitherine from the Spanish site of Nombrevilla−1, “Anchitherium” sampelayoi, with other species of Anchitherium from Europe, the North American genera Megahippus and Hypohippus, and the Asian genus Sinohippus. These comparisons allow us to suggest the inclusion of this large Spanish browsing horse in the Asian genus Sinohippus, rather than in Anchitherium. This proposal is made on the basis of some morphological traits from the upper cheek teeth of the Nombrevilla−1 fossils, and their large size, which clearly is outside the range of all other known European Anchitherium.

We describe the most complete and best−preserved materials assigned to Simocyon from Spain. Specimens come from the late Miocene (Vallesian) locality of Batallones−1, Province of Madrid and are assigned to Simocyon batalleri. Cranial, mandibular and dental anatomy of S. batalleri from Batallones−1 is described and compared with those of known species of Simocyon. We review the systematic status and the definition of the species of Simocyon and we analyse the morphological variation within Simocyon. Three species are recognized as valid. S. batalleri is known from several Vallesian localities (mainly MN 10) of Spain. S. diaphorus, from the early Vallesian of Germany (Mammal Zone MN 9), is the geologically oldest European species. The type species S. primigenius is Turolian in age and known from several localities of Europe, North America, and China. The species includes the junior synonyms S. zdanskyi and S. marshi. The status of Simocyon hungaricus is not resolved. Simocyon simpsoni is excluded here from Simocyon and reassigned to its original generic name Protursus. On the basis of the material described here, we propose a differential diagnosis for Simocyon batalleri. This species is morphologically intermediate between the more primitive S. diaphorus, which has a less reduced p3; and the more derived S. primigenius, characterized by a modified mandible (e.g., more vertical and more expanded coronoid process, longer angular process). The evolution of the genus Simocyon is characterized by a trend toward a more crushing adaptation involving at least a modification of the posterior part of the mandible. A reconstruction of the skull and life appearance of Simocyon is proposed.

The aim of the presented study is to identify the attitudes of future teachers (in pre-service teacher education) toward Augmented Reality (AR) applications. The innovation experience was carried out in the academic year 2016/17. For the collection of data, the Augmented Reality Applications Attitude Scale (ARAAS), by Küçük, Yilmaz, Baydaş & Göktaş (2014), was adapted to the Spanish context. It is a Likert scale grouped into three dimensions that determine the attitudes of future teachers toward the use of AR applications in education, which are Relevance, Satisfaction and Reliability. In order to analyse data, the statistical software SPSS 23.0 was used. The Bartlett test of sphericity and the Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) test for sampling adequacy were also conducted. Results of the study led to the following conclusions: the students developed a favourable attitude in their role as future teachers toward the use of AR applications as learning tools, which have also provided deep learning.

By using the effective mass and parabolic band approximations, the nonlinear optical rectification and the second harmonic generation are calculated in a two-dimensional quantum ring under the simultaneous effects of perpendicularly applied magnetic field and in-plane applied electric field. The geometry of the ring is modeled via the combined influences of a parabolic and inverse square confining potentials. The exact solutions for the two-dimensional motion of the conduction band electrons are used as the basis for a perturbation-theory treatment of the static electric field effect. The variation of one of the different potential energy parameters, for a fixed configuration of the remaining ones, leads to either blueshifts or redshifts of the resonant peaks as well as to distinct rates of change for their amplitudes.

We report the theoretical calculation of the electronic states in a $Al_{x}Ga_{1-x}As$-based quantum well with inverse parabolic confinement under the combined effects of the intense laser field and hydrostatic pressure. Calculations are in the effective mass and parabolic band approximations and using a variational procedure and the so-called Floquet method in order to obtain the energies and wave functions for the conduction band states. We use the obtained information to investigate the intersubband-related nonlinear optical absorption and optical rectification coefficients.
