The paper aimed at introduction of biographical research report elaborated by the Student's Scientific Circle of Pedagogues, Special Pedagogy Section at the Copernicus University in Torun. It is also an invitation to individual biography of Wanda Szuman, a special pedagogue and adult teacher, who lived 1890-1994 in northern Poland. The authoress concentrated on chosen aspects of pedagogical and andragogical concepts of Wanda Szuman, her pedagogical habitus and basic thoughts which influenced contemporary special pedagogy and andragogy especially in northern regions of Poland.

Micro-enterprises and self-employed individuals have been hit particularly hard by the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, but few studies have tackled the issue. This paper is based on four in-depth case studies of self-employed people from different sectors who have been greatly affected by measures taken to control the pandemic. By capturing shifts in the perception of institutional and economic pressures, as well as precarity after the outbreak of COVID-19, we gained profound insight into crisis management among entrepreneurs working in niche or marginalized fields of business. We found parallels in their biographies and attitudes, but their perceptions of the COVID-19 pandemic differ. We observed paradoxes and hybrid logic, as well as different ways of coping with the crisis. Having a “plan B” helped in some cases, while all of them benefitted from the solidarity of networks and communities.

Artykuł przedstawia biogramy cystersów jędrzejowskich, uwzględnionych na liście członków zgromadzenia klasztornego w czasie kasaty opactwa w 1819 r. Zawartość biogramów stanowią informacje dotyczące m.in. daty urodzenia i miejsca pochodzenia każdego z mnichów, czasu wstąpienia do klasztoru, złożenia profesji zakonnej i przyjęcia święceń kapłańskich oraz pełnionych funkcji klasztornych. Szczególną uwagę zwrócono na pokasacyjne losy zakonników. Podstawowy materiał źródłowy stanowiły akta ogólne i personalne duchowieństwa, schematyzmy diecezjalne i zakonne oraz akta parafialne i księgi metrykalne.
The article presents the biographies of the Jędrzejów Cistercians included in the list of members of the monastery during the dissolution of the abbey in 1819. The content of biographies includes information on e.g., the date of birth and place of origin of each monk, the time of joining the monastery, making their religious profession, and being ordained a priest, and performing monastic functions. Particular attention was paid to the post-dissolution fate of the monks. The primary source material included general and personal files of the clergy, diocesan and monastic schematics as well as parish files and record books.

Artykuł przedstawia losy cystersów jędrzejowskich po kasacie opactwa w 1819 r. W pierwszym etapie badań przygotowano kartotekę biograficzną zakonników, która posłużyła do przeprowadzenia analizy w zakresie ich pochodzenia społecznego i terytorialnego oraz liczebności i struktury wieku. Podstawowy materiał źródłowy stanowiły akta ogólne i personalne duchowieństwa, schematyzmy diecezjalne i zakonne oraz akta parafialne i księgi metrykalne. Po supresji opactwa niektórzy z zakonników pozostali dożywotnio w zabudowaniach klasztoru, inni przeszli do pracy na placówkach parafialnych. Niejednokrotnie były to ośrodki powiązane z klasztorem jędrzejowskim.
The article presents the history of the Cistercians of Jędrzejów after the dissolution of the abbey in 1819. In the first stage of the research, a biographical index was prepared, which was used to analyze the social and territorial origin as well as the numerical and age structure of the monks. The primary source material were general and personal files of the clergy, diocesan and monastic schematisms, as well as parish files and record books. After the suppression of the abbey, some of the monks stayed in the monastery buildings, others went to parish work. These were often centers associated with the Jędrzejów monastery.

Pierre’a Bourdieu jedynie w znikomym stopniu korzysta ze źródeł biograficznych, przez co obraz kultur ludowych (w tym obraz socjalizacji samego autora) pozostaje niepełny. Wykorzystanie źródeł autobiograficznych pochodzących z różnych kultur i okresów historycznych umożliwia omówienie relatywnie niezmiennych wzorów kulturowych klasy ludowej. Artykuł porównuje dwa oparte na autobiograficznych wspomnieniach obrazy wzorów kultury robotniczej (ludowej) pochodzące z klasycznej pracy Richarda Hoggarta na temat brytyjskiej klasy robotniczej w połowie XX wieku oraz portretu współczesnej klasy robotniczej w USA, który stworzył Alfred Lubrano. Porównanie tych prac pozwala wyodrębnić siedem grup wzorów kulturowych, związanych kolejno (1) ze wspólnotowym życiem skoncentrowanym wokół domu, (2) wartościami (pozornie paradoksalne współistnienie konserwatyzmu i tolerancji w klasie ludowej), (3) wykorzystywaniem ciała jako towaru, (4) przyjętymi sposobami komunikacji, (5) trzema rodzajami „praktycyzmu”, a także (6) gustem kulinarnym i (7) sposobami gospodarowania domowym budżetem. Materiał ten pozwala pokazać metodologiczne możliwości, jakie stwarza rozszerzenie perspektywy metodologicznej Pierre’a Bourdieu o podejście biograficzne.

Celem artykułu jest analiza procesu potwierdzania etykiety i utrwalania naznaczenia demoralizacją ucznia. Ponadto celem jest również pokazanie możliwości, jakie daje przyjęta perspektywa teoretyczno-metodologiczna w badaniu problemów demoralizacji nieletnich. Punktem wyjścia analiz podjętych w artykule są następujące pytania: jakie znaczenia nadają recydywiści działaniom szkoły na rzecz legitymizacji ich statusu zdemoralizowanego nieletniego? Po jakie taktyki autoprezentacji w interakcjach z nauczycielami sięgają uczniowie z etykietą demoralizacji? I w końcu: w jakie relacje ze zdemoralizowanymi uczniami wchodzą nauczyciele? Uczestnikami badań byli recydywiści, którzy w okresie dorastania mieli doświadczenie pobytu w placówkach resocjalizacyjnych. Materiał empiryczny stanowiły zapisy autobiograficznych wywiadów narracyjnych i pogłębionych z elementami narracji. Przyjęcie perspektywy poznania wykraczającej poza indywidualne biografie jednostek i dającej warunki odkrywania ogólnych wzorów i mechanizmów kształtujących sens działaniauczniów i nauczycieli umożliwiły procedury metodologii teorii ugruntowanej. Działania podejmowane przez nauczycieli na rzecz legitymizacji statusu ucznia zdemoralizowanego poprzez umieszczenie w placówce resocjalizacyjnej określono jako strategię „reguły drugiej szansy”. Oprócz opisu znaczeń, jakie przyjmuje dla zdemoralizowanych uczniów ta reguła, zaproponowano także typologięnauczycieli, których działania tworzą określone warunki autoprezentacji uczniów – kandydatów na wychowanków placówek resocjalizacyjnych. Badania w nurcie interpretatywnym oraz kierowanie się założeniami symbolicznego interakcjonizmu stwarza możliwość analizy i interpretacji wzajemnych interakcji (nauczyciele – naznaczeni uczniowie) i podejmowanych działań (przez obie strony). Przyjęta perspektywa poznawcza jest przydatna dla opisu dynamiki etykietowania ucznia. Umożliwia również zrozumienie warunków procesu negocjacji charakteru i zakresu jego dewiacji, a także sposobu definiowania przez ucznia zdemoralizowanego zaangażowania nauczycieli w rozwiązywanie jego problemów.
The aim of the article is to analyze the process of confirming and perpetuating the demoralization of students. Moreover, its aim is also to show the possibilities offered by the theoretical and methodological perspective adopted in studying the problems of demoralization of minors. The starting point for the analysis undertaken in the article are the following questions: What meaning do habitual offenders ascribe to the school’s actions to legitimize their status as a “minor offender”? What are the tactics of autopresentation in the interactions with teachers for students with the demoralization label? And finally: how do teachers relate to the demoralized students? The participants of the study were recidivists who experienced staying in social rehabilitation centers during their adolescence. The empirical material were the records of autobiographical narrative interviews and in-depth interviews with elements of a narrative. The adoption of the cognitive perspective going beyond the individual biographies and giving the conditions for discovering general patterns and mechanisms shaping the sense of action of students and teachers, were made possible with the pocedures of the grounded theory methodology. Actions taken by the teachers to legitimize the status of the demoralized student through the placement in a social rehabilitation facility were defined as the strategy of the “second-chance rule”. In addition to the description of meanings that this rule adopts for demoralized students, the article proposes a typology of teachers whose activities create specific conditions for the self-presentation of students – candidates for correctional institutions’ inmates. Relying on the interpretative trend and following the assumptions of symbolic interactionism creates the opportunity to analyze and interpret mutual interactions (teachers–marked students) and undertaken actions (by both sides). The adopted cognitive perspective is useful for describing the dynamics of confirming the label of students’ demoralization. It also enables understanding of the conditions of the negotiation process of the character and scope of its deviation, as well as the way in which the demoralized student defines the commitment of teachers to solving their problems.

The article is an analysis of a single case-a biographical narrative of a Tri-City resident who enters adulthood at the beginning of political transformation in 1989, and whose life path turns out to be an unintentional, dynamic journey between various professions, social worlds and structural positions. This creates a complicated and ambiguous biographical pattern which does not fall into either the socio-economic promotion of the “winner” or into the degradation of the transformation “loser.” The reconstruction of this pattern reveals the hero’s great resourcefulness and entrepreneurship, but also the fragility of the structures stabilizing his life and the volatility of life orientation points. The binder of this biography turns out to be, above all, reflexivity and, what I suggest calling, the narrative agency of the narrator, who can transform his structurally dispersed and chaotic life experiences of the time of transformation into a very original story, making him a strong subject of his own fate. This, however, creates the inevitable tension between the experienced or lived life, life history and the narrated life, life story, prompting us to again pose the question about the commonly assumed, although differently defined, correspondence between the level of reality and the level of its linguistic (in this case-autobiographical) representation.

This article presents the findings from a biographical study of repeat offenders serving prison sentences. It focuses on the experiences of male participants, particularly the turning points in the ways in which the offenders evaluated their lives. The starting point for the analyses were the following questions: How do repeat offenders construct turning points which so dramatically transform their perceptions of themselves and their identity in the eyes of others? What role does blind chance play in the process of rehabilitation and what role is played by institutional interventions? Four types of turning points were identified and discussed in this study: a change of social roles in the family, love for a woman, religious conversion, and participation in addiction therapy. These turning points triggered strong emotions and led to biography work aimed at breaking away from habitual offending.
W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań biograficznych przeprowadzonych wśród recydywistów odbywających karę pozbawienia wolności. Zainteresowaniem objęto doświadczenia mężczyzn (punkty zwrotne), które stanowiły wyraźny przełom w realizowanym stylu życia w więzieniu i sposobie myślenia o swoim życiu w ogóle. Punktem wyjścia dla analiz uczyniono następujące pytania: w jaki sposób rekonstruowane są przez recydywistów doświadczenia stanowiące punkty zwrotne, które drastycznie transformują ich wizję „siebie” i ich tożsamości widziane oczami innych? Jaką rolę odgrywają w tym procesie tzw. przypadkowe okoliczności życiowe, a jaki jest udział intencjonalnie organizowanych przez personel wydarzeń w obrębie resocjalizacji instytucjonalnej? Charakterystyce poddano cztery przełomowe doświadczenia, którym towarzyszyły silne emocje oraz które uruchomiły pracę biograficzną i działania nastawione na zerwanie z przestępczym stylem życia. Są to: reorientacja układu pozycji i ról społecznych w rodzinie, miłość do kobiety, nawrócenie religijne oraz udział w terapii uzależnień.

Artykuł skupia się na studium przypadku dotyczącym osoby biograficznie doświadczającej życia w dwóch kulturach, tym samym ukształtowanej przez życie i wychowanie w dwóch państwach, w wyniku migracji rodziców z PRL-u do Stanów Zjednoczonych na początku lat 80. Analiza oscyluje tutaj pomiędzy próbą wpisania narracji rozmówcy w refleksyjność bliską koncepcji człowieka marginalnego a kwestią poszukiwania, definiowania, konstruowania i rekonstruowania przez narratora jego tożsamości. Tekst ma także na celu dostarczenie kolejnego wglądu w problematykę złożonej tożsamości migrantów.
The article is focused on the case study concerning the person biographically experiencing living in two cultures, in that process formed by living and bringing up in two countries, as a result of the migration of parents from the People’s Republic of Poland to the United States at the beginning of the 80s. The analysis oscillates here between an attempt to write down this narration into the reflectiveness close to the concept of marginal man and the issue of seeking, defining, constructing, and reconstructing the narrator’s identity. The text also aims to provide further insight into the complex issues migrants’ identity.

The author presents the problem of the importance of education, adult learning for the construction of their identity. To achieve that she analyses educational experiences of four different women - nontraditional students, who came from working-class families in the light of their biographies. In the study she discovers to what extent their current social and economical status determines the way of thinking about education and their learning process as limited to compensating for deficiencies and ‘attachment to their school desk’. In the methodological sense, the author shows a biographical study as an element which becomes a part of public discourse, not devoid of economical and political connotations.

The article is devoted to an issue of shaping and evolution of convictions in aggressive behaviors. Convictions, as quite stable cognitive structures, do not change easily under influence of experiences. However, their influence on a person’s behavior depends above all on the way of interpretation of an event and a role played in an aggressive event. In order to illustrate the described issue, we chose a narrative (case study). On the basis of autobiographical narrative interview, experiences were reconstructed, which were influencing a shaping of convictions connected with aggressive behaviors, as well as variability, depending on a role undertaken in an aggressive behavior.

W artykule skupiam się na próbie rekonstrukcji klasowej pozycji przedstawiciela klasy średniej – jego biograficznej drogi oraz napięć wynikających z zajmowania określonego miejsca w strukturze społecznej. Tę swoistą analizę wspieram ujęciem badawczym wywodzącym się z tradycji metody biograficznej, a w szczególności tradycji szkoły analizy autobiograficznych wywiadów narracyjnych Fritza Schützego. Główna argumentacja skupia się na pokazaniu zalet metody biograficznej w analizowaniu problematyki klas społecznych.
The main focus of the article lies in describing the class position of an individual from the Polish middle class, his biographical path, and tensions connected with his actual place in social structure. Background of the analysis is rooted in Fritz Schütze’s methodology of autobiographical narrative interview. One of the main goals is to show the advantages of using biographical methodology in analysing class structure.

Based upon the original application to the European Commission, this article gives insights into the thinking of the Euroidentities team at the point that the project began. The question: Is the European ‘identity project’ failing? is posed in the sense that the political and economic attainments of the European Union have not been translated into a sense of identity with or commitment to Europe from the populaces that have benefited from them. The urgency of European ‘identity work’ is asserted with a number of levels for the construction of European identity being hypothesized. Euroidentities is intended to break conceptual ground by bringing together on an equal footing two apparently antagonistic views of identity – the collective and institutional and the individual and biographical – to give a more anchored and nuanced view of identity formation and transformation than either can provide on its own. Rather than following the dominant approaches to research on European identity that have been macro-theoretical and ‘top-down’, retrospective in-depth qualitative biographical interviews are planned since they provide the ideal means of gaining insight into the formation of a European identity or multiple identities from the ‘bottom up’ perspective of non-elite groups. The reliability of analysis will be buttressed by the use of contrastive comparison between cases, culminating in contrastive comparison across the national project teams between cases drawn from different ‘sensitized groups’ that provide the fieldwork structure of the project. The paper concludes with a summary of some of the more significant findings.
Artykuł powstał na podstawie aplikacji złożonej do Komisji Europejskiej przez zespół Euroidentities. Punktem wyjścia było tu pytanie o aktualny status „projektu“ tożsamości europejskiej w sytuacji gdy proces integracji obejmujący sfery ekonomiczną i polityczną nie przekładał się na budowanie poczucia tożsamości europejskiej. Propozycja badawcza pokazywała, iż odgórnie zaprojektowane z perspektywy elit (top down) działania, których celem jest tworzenie tożsamości europejskiej nie znajdują odzwierciedlenia w potocznym doświadczeniu zwykłych obywateli budujących poczucie identyfikacji przez biograficzne doświadczanie Europy. Artykuł przedstawia najważniejsze założenia projektu oraz sposób jego realizacji.

The starting point of these considerations in the form of a case study are two issues: intermediality as a distinguishing mark of contemporary hybrid art forms and numerous references to famous films in the latest Polish theatre. The article concerns the performance Between the mouth and the edge of the cup (directed by Remigiusz Brzyk, Zagłębie Theatre in Sosnowiec, 17.05.2019). This performance, inspired by the biography of Maria Rodziewiczówna, is an example of the corelation of various media and an autothematic show whose theme is the writer's biography, popular novel, film and their reception.

Artykuł poświęcono problematyce kształtowania się i zmienności przekonań w zachowaniach agresywnych. Przekonania jako dość trwałe struktury poznawcze nie ulegają łatwym zmianom pod wpływem doświadczeń. Jednak ich wpływ na zachowanie jednostki zależy przede wszystkim od sposobu zinterpretowania zdarzenia i odgrywanej roli w zdarzeniu agresywnym. Do zilustrowania poruszanej problematyki posłużyła wybrana narracja (case study). Na podstawie autobiograficznego wywiadu narracyjnego zrekonstruowano doświadczenia życiowe wpływające na kształtowanie się przekonań związanych z zachowaniami agresywnymi, jak również ich zmienność w zależności od podejmowanej roli w zachowaniu agresywnym.
The article is devoted to an issue of shaping and evolution of convictions in aggressive behaviors. Convictions, as quite stable cognitive structures, do not change easily under influence of experiences. However, their influence on a person’s behavior depends above all on the way of interpretation of an event and a role played in an aggressive event. In order to illustrate the described issue, we chose a narrative (case study). On the basis of autobiographical narrative interview, experiences were reconstructed, which were influencing a shaping of convictions connected with aggressive behaviors, as well as variability, depending on a role undertaken in an aggressive behavior.
