    The present article discusses ethical aspects of the representations of (sexual) violence and (predominantly women’s) suffering in two recent television series, The Handmaid’s Tale and Dietland. It reflects on the uses and functions of violent imagery they contain and the manner in which this imagery contributes to the series’ perception as feminist shows. The primary question posed is whether this violence occasions engagement or disengagement: whether the role they cast their audiences in consists in gazing or witnessing.

    Opis:
    The Handmaid’s Tale is a story where women’s rights have been revoked, and thus women are back in gender roles taken to the extreme, with no rights, no opinions, and no cosmetics or beauty products of any kind. A once independent woman is turned into an object, a ‘vessel’ whose sole purpose is to bear children to save the population. It is a dystopian nightmare which subjugates and subdues women to the point of sexual slavery, language impacts and indoctrinates them in a psychologically-damaging manner, and denies them the basic freedoms which most women in Western civilization take for granted (Porfert 1). The aim of this paper is to arguing the representation of feminist dystopia and the issues related to female predicament, their submissiveness to men in the novels. It will draw a final picture of women’s struggle for freedom. It has been asserted that woman's identity is pushed aside and even erased in the patriarchal social structure of theocratic states.

    This article examines how audiences engage with popular culture in ways that forge political awareness and civic engagement. Through exploring the various levels of engagement of Hungarian women with the 2017–2020 television adaptation of The Handmaid’s Tale, this study answers questions such as: How do Hungarian female audiences engage with topics raised in The Handmaid’s Tale? How does their engagement with the show encourage cultural citizenship? Based on in-depth interviews with twenty-two Hungarian women, this qualitative empirical research sheds light on the role of television drama series in facilitating the manifestation of cultural citizenship as an arena of identity-construction and community-formation.

    The Handmaid’s Tale
    Opis:
    The article presents the results of a comparative analysis of Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale and essays written by Herta Müller, the most famous Romanian dissident and the recipient of the 2009 Noble Prize in literature. The point of departure for the analysis is the reference to the Romanian regime of Ceaușescu contained in the Historical Notes on The Handmaid’s Tale, which constitute an integral part of Atwood’s novel. Juxtaposing the aforementioned novel with Herta Müller’s essays, the article reveals conspicuous parallels between the actual experience of living under a regime, omnipresent in the texts of the Romanian-born German author, and the dystopian narrative of Offred, the protagonist of The Handmaid’s Tale. The article examines the texts through the lens of the poetics of experience, that is, it treats them as a record of an individual experience which has the power to influence the reader through emphatic involvement.

    Prawda i uczciwość – Boskie prawa a ludzka etyka w serialu Opowieść podręcznej. Fundament uczciwości pojmowanej w kategorii aksjologicznej stanowią trzy elementarne wartości: prawda, dobro oraz miłość. Z kolei normatywne znaczenie pojęcia „uczciwość” w ujęciu aksjologicznym, związane jest z etycznym postępowaniem jednostki w relacji z innymi ludźmi oraz względem siebie samej. Prawda i uczciwość uznawane są za nadrzędne wartości etyczne towarzyszące człowiekowi przez całe jego życie. Dzięki powyższym normom człowiek może prosperować zgodnie z przyjętymi zasadami postępowania, czyli tzw. kodeksem etycznym, w imię miłości, dobra, prawdy, piękna, wolności. Zgodnie z powyższą tezą, należy podjąć próbę odpowiedzi na pytanie: Czy drugi człowiek ma prawo, by odebrać bliźniemu nadrzędną wartość, jaką jest wolność? By odnaleźć odpowiedź na powyższe pytanie, należy skonfrontować widza z wizją destrukcji świata następującą w skutek katastrofy. Spowodowana jest ona sprawowaniem władzy przez uprzywilejowaną samozwańczą grupę rządzącą, która wykorzystuje jako narzędzie władzy: opresję, mechanizmy reżimu oraz wojsko. W tym świecie zniewolenie drugiego człowieka usprawiedliwia się realizacją woli boskiej, a usilna próba odebrania człowiekowi godności oraz autonomii jest wyrazem zniekształcania prawdy. Po wkroczeniu w futurystyczny, fikcyjny świat, odbiorca zostaje skonfrontowany z szeregiem sytuacji granicznych.
    Truth and integrity – God’s law and human ethics in the movie series The handmaid’s Tale. The basis of honesty understood in axiological terms consists of three elementary values: truth, good and love. On the other hand, the normative meaning of the notion of honesty is associated with the ethical behavior of the individual in relation to other people and to the individual him- or herself. Truth and honesty are considered as the superordinate ethical values that accompany a person throughout his or her life. Thanks to these norms, people have the opportunity to thrive in accordance with the accepted rules of conduct, or the so called code of ethics, in the name of, a.o: love, good, truth, beauty, freedom. Thus, an attempt should be made to answer the question: is one human being entitled to deprive another of the superordinate value of freedom? Confrontation of the viewer with the vision of the destruction of the world caused by the catastrophic exercise of power by the privileged self-proclaimed ruling establishment, which utilizes oppression, regime mechanisms and the army as an instrument of power. The enslavement of another human being justified by the carrying out of the divine will, as well as an insistent attempt to deprive people of dignity and autonomy, thus distorting the truth. A futuristic fictitious world which the viewer enters forces them to confront a number of borderline situations.

    This article is devoted to the interpretation of Margaret Atwood’s novel The Handmaid’s Tale. It depicts the changes that have taken place in the United States of America, where the political system has been transformed following a coup d’état and the seizure of power by religious fundamentalists. The writer devotes a great deal of space in the work to the situation of women, so the article uses the perspective of feminist criticism. This made it possible to describe the barbaric laws that particularly affected women. This optic opened up different levels of interpretation, such as the limitations of being a woman. Margaret Atwood’s take on the novel, however, not only undertakes a critique of the regime of power, but also points to the weaknesses of liberal democracy. Accordingly, the article devotes space to the issue of women’s economic oppression, an environmental issue. Furthermore, the diversity of women in terms of their position in the social hierarchy, age, sexuality or reproductive capacity is captured. It seems, therefore, that the writer takes an example from her female readers, which has been seen as a turn towards intersectionality.
