Opis:
This study presented a self-designed prompt gamma neutron activation analysis (PGNAA) model and used Fluka simulation to simulate the heavy metals (Mn, Cu, Hg, Ni, Cr, Pb) in soil samples. The relationship between the prompt gamma-ray yield of each heavy metal and soil thickness, content of heavy metals in the soil, and source distance was obtained. Simulation results show that the prompt gamma-ray yield of each heavy metal increases with the increase in soil thickness and reaches saturation at 18 cm. The greater the proportion of heavy metals in the soil, the greater the prompt gamma-ray yield. The highest content is approximately 3%, and the change in distance between the neutron source and soil sample does not affect the prompt gamma-ray yield of heavy metals.

We reconstruct palaeoenvironmental changes since the Late Holocene in the Orava-Nowy Targ Basin, with an emphasis on anthropogenic influence (Walker et al., 2018). This reconstruction employs multiproxy analyses of the Otrębowskie Brzegi poor fen. We combined radiocarbon and 210Pb dating with elemental geochemistry, stable lead isotopes, and palaeobotanical analyses. The core we investigated covers a period from 4200 ± 100 BC to the present, with a peat accumulation rate varying between 0.001 and 0.243 cm y-1. Heavy metal concentrations, Pb isotopic ratios, and a palynological analysis revealed a significant impact of human activities in the past. The highest concentration and accumulation rate of Pb, were found around 1950 AD. The 206Pb/207Pb quotient ranged between 1.168 and 1.223, with average value around 1.198. Most of the interpretation was based on Pb and its stable isotopes; however, other elements were also important indicators of natural and anthropogenic environmental changes. Our results revealed similarities between the geochemical composition of the peatland studied and other peatlands from the Orava-Nowy Targ Basin.

Opis:
The main purpose of this work was to determine the degree of negative impact of heavy metals accumulated in the water sediments to aquatic organisms. Samples of sediments were collected in winter 2013, from 4 layers of sediment (0-5, 5-10, 10-20 and 20-30 cm) at three points along the water reservoir. Sediments were prepared for analysis in accordance with the procedures applied in soil science. The analysis was carried out for the fraction with a particle diameter less than 1 mm. The total content of such elements as Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn, was determined by atomic absorption spectrometry (using the Thermo Scientific iCE 3000 series spectrometer) after digestion in a mixture (5:1) of concentrated acid HNO3 (65 %) and HClO4 (60%). The total Hg content was obtained by using the AMA 254 analyzer. Only the lead content in the analyzed samples of bottom sediments exceeded the contamination value given by polish law (the Regulation of the Minister of Environment). According to the classification of PGI samples of sediments are classified mainly as medium polluted sediments (Class II), with the exception of zinc and lead concentrations (Class III). Due to the value of the indicator of sediments ecological risk (Er) for cadmium, the examined sediments from small water reservoirs no. 1 and 2 should be classified as deposits with a higher rate of environmental contamination risk. The sediments from small water reservoirs no. 3 and 4 belong to the class of a much higher index of contamination risk. On the basis of the PER indicator (a degree of potential envi ronmental risk) the sediments from small water reservoirs located within the area of organic farming can be classified as contaminated by heavy metals to a moderate degree. On the other hand, the analyzed sediments of small water reservoirs no. 3 and 4 were classified as deposits with a severe degree of heavy metal contamination. On the basis of the LAW classification one can say that the bottom sediments of examined ponds were classified into different classes depending on the analyzed chemical element.

Opis:
Fluvial sediments accumulated in the bottoms of river valleys downstream from large cities are characterised by higher levels of heavy metal content, which poses a threat to the environment and humans. This study presents a comprehensive assessment of the degree of pollution of four alluvial sediment profiles (80 samples), collected from the bottom of the Bystrzyca river valley downstream from Lublin, conducted with the use of five geochemical indices. Channel deposits and sediments (alluvial soils) sampled from the floodplain were analysed. The content levels of the six heavy metals under study were as follows: Cd: 10.6–291.2 mg/kg, Cr: 53.1–292.4 mg/kg, Cu: 20.4–223.1 mg/kg, Ni: 2.9–19.3, Pb: 39.3–280.3, Zn: 108.9–991.4 mg/kg. The horizontal and vertical variation of the pollution level was linked with the history of anthropogenic pressure on the one hand, and the geomorphological location of a given profile on the other. Heavy metal content in the samples did not show any correlation with grain size composition, organic matter content, and Fe and Mn content. Cadmium was the element whose concentration levels were comparable with those in alluvial sediments of rivers in industrialised areas while the indices for the other metals showed varied levels of pollution: from low to high. However, the ecological risk is high for all samples as indicated by the synthetic potential ecological risk index, which takes into account the toxicity of all the metals under study.

Opis:
Carabid beetles are frequently used as the environment condition indicators. Main purpose of this study was to test if community structure parameters of carabids indicate the stress intensity of heavy metal contamination in the soil of temperate forests. Three geographic regions in Europe differing in both degree of accumulation of heavy metals and its quality were chosen. In Olkusz (southern Poland) the main stressor was zinc, in Głogów (western Poland) – copper and in Clydach (Wales, UK) – nickel. We found strong division between assemblages from contaminated and reference sites (fig. 2). Indicator species from pollution preferring areas in one region can avoid polluted sites in the other region (tab. 2). Species preferring contaminated soils were significantly smaller than those that avoid such ecosystems (F=5.46, p<0.05). Generalized linear model indicated that species richness and biomass decreased in each stressor gradient of contaminated forests. Mean individual biomass and mean abundance of assemblages were significantly lower along zinc gradient only. Species with broader ecological range replace habitat specialists as a response to resource unpredictability. Decreased species richness and biomass in polluted forests indicate degradation of habitat resources and forest ecosystem functioning.

The heavy metal pollution in seawater and sediment can damage mangrove ecosystems and accumulate in mudskipper (Periophthalmus spp.) that lives in mangrove forests. The accumulation of heavy metal in mudskipper can affect the structure of its gill tissue, liver, and muscles. This research aims at (1) analyzing the levels of lead, cadmium and cuprum heavy metals in mudskipper, sediment, and seawater and (2) analyzing the damage to the gill, liver, and muscle tissue of mudskipper due to the exposure to heavy metals. The mudskipper samples were collected from the mangrove forests of Poka, Waai, and Rutong from May to June in 2019. The heavy metal analysis was conducted using the AAS method, while the gill, liver and muscle tissue staining was carried out with the HE (Hematoxylin Eosin) staining method with 40x magnification. The data were analyzed using descriptive analysis and correlational analysis. The results of the analysis showed that based on the mangrove locations, the order of Pb and Cu accumulation in mudskipper was Rutong> Poka> Waai; while the order of the Cd accumulation was Rutong> Waai> Poka. The changes in the gill tissue structure due to the exposure to heavy metals were in the form of teleangiectasia, secondary lamellar edema, hyperplasia, epithelial desquamation, clubbing, and primary lamellar edema. The changes in the liver tissue structure due to the exposure to heavy metals involved hemorrhage and fat degeneration. The changes in the muscle tissue structure due to the exposure to heavy metals include changes in muscle fibers, edema, and necrosis. The highest accumulation of Pb and Cd was found in gills and muscles from seawater, while low level of heavy metal Cu was found in the liver.

Heavy metal pollution in freshwater ecosystems is a critical issue because it threatens the ecosystem as well as public health. Early detection of these pollutants is therefore essential, and biomarker analysis can be an ideal way to achieve this. Metallothionein (MT) protein is a widely-used molecular biomarker related to the physiological and biological changes which suitable bioindicators, like freshwater snails, undergo in stressful environments. The purpose of this research is to assess the relationship between the heavy metals lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd) and mercury (Hg) and MT levels in freshwater snails (Sulcospira testudinaria) in the Brantas River watershed. Heavy metals were assayed using an atomic absorption spectrophotometer, while MT levels were analyzed using indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Water quality parameters including temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), biological oxygen demand (BOD), ammonia concentration, and phenol concentration were also measured. Samples were obtained from ten sampling sites at Brantas River watershed. The results indicated that Pb concentration ranged from 0.001–0.006 mg/L, Hg from 0.001–0.005 mg/L, and Cd from 0.005–0.03 mg/L, while MT concentration ranged from 0.40–0.80 ng/g. Relationship analysis between heavy metals and MT level in this study revealed the significant effect of Pb concentration on MT values in Sulcospira testudinaria. Therefore, MT in this snail is a potential biomarker for Pb contamination.

We used different tests to assess the effect of high soil concentrations of heavy metals on pollen viability in plants from metallicolous (MET) and nonmetallicolous (NONMET) populations. The frequency of viable pollen depended on the test applied: MET plants showed no significant reduction of pollen viability by acetocarmine, Alexander, MTT and X-Gal dye testing, but a drastic reduction of pollen viability in MET flowers (MET 56% vs 72% NONMET) by the FDA test. There was no correlation between pollen viability estimated in histochemical tests and pollen germination in vitro or in vivo. We discuss the terminology used to describe pollen viability as determined by histochemical tests.

Wyniki badań prowadzonych w latach: 1998, 2001, 2003, 2005, obejmowały zawartości: Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd i Pb. Badania wykazały podwyższone wartości metali ciężkich w latach 1998 i 2001, stan taki wynika z wpływu wezbrań, w wyniku których nastąpiła intensywna akumulacja osadów wraz z zanieczyszczeniami wymytymi z obszarów objętych powodzią. Wyniki badań przeprowadzonych w późniejszych latach wykazują zmniejszanie się zawartości metali ciężkich w wierzchniej warstwie osadów. Ocena jakości osadów dennych wykonana według różnych kryteriów wykazała brak potencjalnego zagrożenia dla środowiska wynikającego z akumulacji w nich pierwiastków śladowych.
The paper presents variability in time of heavy metal concentrations in bottom sediments of small water reservoir at Zesławice, situated on the Dłubnia river. The presented results of research on the chemical properties of sediments conducted in 1998, 2001, 2003 and 2005 determined the sediment concentrations of chromium, nickel, copper, zinc, cadmium and lead. The analyses revealed elevated heavy metal concentrations in 1998 and 2001. This state might have been due to the effect of high water levels, which occurred in the period prior to the sample collection. The results of research conducted in the subsequent years show decreasing heavy metal content in the top layer of the bottom sediments. The assessment of the sediment quality did not reveal any potential hazard to the environment resulting from trace element accumulation in bottom sediments.

Celem badań była ocena zanieczyszczenia metalami ciężkimi (Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd i Pb) rumianku lekarskiego (Matricaria chamomilla L.) i babki lancetowatej (Plantago lanceolata L.).
The aim of the study was to evaluate the heavy metal contamination (Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd and Pb) of Matricaria chamomilla L. and Plantago lanceolata L. Within passive biomonitoring, samples of medicinal plants and soil samples were taken. Heavy metals were determined using atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS). On the basis of the conducted research it can be stated that the herbs used in the study differed in terms of concentrations of heavy metals, depending on the place of their collection. All herb samples were contaminated with high concentrations of manganese, iron and zinc. The tested soil samples from groups B and C according to the Regulation of the Minister of the Environment didn’t exceed the maximum permissible concentrations of individual heavy metals. The conducted biomonitoring studies indicate the possibility of using both species of these medicinal plants as bio-indicators to assess the level of heavy metals pollution in the natural environment.

The study was carried out on forest soils in the vicinity of a copper ore tailings facility and a copper smelter in Lower Silesia, Poland. Soil and litter samples were collected in the surroundings of the tailings facility under pine stands different in age (50, 18 and 11 years old) and under poplar stands (same age as the pine stands) located at an increasing distance from the copper smelter (0.5 km, 1.5 km and 2.1 km). The purpose of the study was to describe the effect of copper mining and smelting on forest soils. The following were determined in the collected soil and litter samples: pH in distilled water electrometrically with a pH meter and total concentrations of Cu, Zn and Pb after digestion with perchloric acid (1:10) using the ICP-ES technique. Very high pH values were found in all organic horizons, which can evidence the alkalizing effect of dusts from the objects. In all the forest soils, the highest total concentrations of all the analyzed elements were found in humus layers, decreasing in deeper horizons of the soil profile. The total concentration of Cu, Pb and Zn was much higher in forest soils under poplar stands in the vicinity of the copper smelter. The concentration of all the elements decreased rapidly with the distance from the smelter. The concentration of Cu, Pb and Zn was higher than found in the vicinity of the objects on the arable soils. This can indicate a secondary rise in heavy metal concentration in the topsoil caused by the presence of a tree stand.
W ektopróchnicach wszystkich badanych gleb stwierdzono najwyższą całkowitą zawartość Cu, Zn i Pb, a zawartość pierwiastków malała w głąb profilu glebowego.

To explore methods for a comprehensive assessment of the treatment effect of heavy metal pollution in the sewage sludge from China’s industrial parks, we studied the wastewater treatment plant of the Nanjing MV Industrial Park as an example. Eight common heavy metals in sewage sludge – Zinc (Zn), Copper (Cu), Lead (Pb), Mercury (Hg), Chromium (Cr), Nickel (Ni), Arsenic (As), Cadmium (Cd) were studied. The treatment effect of these containments was comprehensively assessed using the absolute niche fitness model, the relative niche model and the spatial niche fitness model. All three models showed that Pb > Cu > Ni > Hg > Cd > Cr > Zn > As in the samples. However, they produced – different numerical values – the absolute niche suitability model < the spatial niche suitability model < and the relative niche suitability model. Therefore, we concluded that special attention should be paid to the carcinogenic risk of As and Cr heavy metals to the person exposed to the sewage sludge.

Opis:
Heavy metal pollutants in the leachate of waste landfill are a potential threat to the environment. In this study, the feasibility of using municipal sewage sludge as barrier material for the containment of heavy metal pollutants from solid waste landfills was evaluated by compaction test and hydraulic conductivity test concerning compaction property, impermeability and heavy metal retardation. Results of the compaction test showed that the maximum dry density of 0.79 g·cm−3 was achieved at the optimum water content of about 60%. The hydraulic conductivities of compacted sewage sludge permeated with synthetic heavy metal solutions were in the range of 1.3×10−8 – 6.2×10−9 cm·s−1, less than 1.0 ×10−−7cm·s−1 recommended by regulations for barrier materials. Chemical analyses on the effluent from the hydraulic conductivity tests indicated that the two target heavy metals, Zn and Cd in the permeants were all retarded by compacted sewage sludge, which might be attributed to the precipitation and adsorption of heavy metal ions. The results of this study suggest that specially prepared material from sewage sludge could be used as a barrier for waste landfills for its low permeability and strong retardation to heavy metal pollutants.

Opis:
