The paper presents results of a numerical investigation on load capacity of the mixed bench and slab shallow foundations (often used in the process of the modernization of the old, antique buildings, which are suffering from lack of the load capacity). The main trouble with use of existing analytical approaches is a non-unique foundation level of the bench and slab, they could even be founded on different geotechnical layers. Proposed analytical model based on Brinch Hansen (EC-7) approach could deal with such a problem. Results of 2D and 3D numerical modelling (ultimate load of the foundation) are compared to the obtained by using the proposed approach. Influence of the soil above the foundation level is also investigated. Different width to length ratios of the foundation are analyzed (from "short" to "long" foundations). Usability of the proposed analytical model in engineering practice is proved by numerical simulations; the obtained results are on the safe side with quite acceptable margin of additional safety.

Opis:
Finite element modelling of elements connected in foundation bolted joints applied in the case of seating of heavy machines or devices is presented. The study is focused on joints made with the use of three different types of chocks: a steel chock, a polymer chock and a polymer-steel chock. Stiffness characteristics of the joined elements for the adopted models of the foundation bolted joint at the assembly stage are described and compared. Conclusions of paramount importance to the engineering practice are created.

In general, community archives are grass-roots documentary initiatives built around a broadly defined community, which collect, preserve, describe and provide access to historical sources concerning a previously chosen topic, e.g. local history and traditions, a social movement, a minority, an ethnic group, an event or a person. The phenomenon of community archiving is not new, but only several years ago it started to be described by scholars in Poland. The article describes educational activities performed by two biggest and most influential community archives in Poland: the KARTA Centre Foundation in Warsaw and the General Elżbieta Zawacka Foundation in Toruń. Actions of these archives are shown referring to general understanding of education in historical archives, as well as specific situation of Polish archives, especially their mission to promote historical knowledge and local identity. Also promotional qualities of educational endeavours in archives are stressed.

This paper presents selected aspects of buildings foundations on the example of contemporary implemented houses. There were discussed the main types of direct foundations and it was pointed to the selection of solutions which depend not only on soil parameters but also on the type of technology used to build a detached house.

Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie charakteru zależności zachodzących pomiędzy aktem fundacyjnym a statutem fundacji w kontekście procedury notarialnej. Omówiono w szczególności powinności notariusza obejmujące sporządzenie obu aktów. Opracowanie ma także na celu poddanie analizie obowiązku notariusza dotyczącego oceny, czy majątek wskazany w akcie fundacyjnym jest wystarczający do osiągnięcia celów działania fundacji.
The aim of the article is to present the nature of the relationship between the foundation act and the foundation's statute in the context of the notarial procedure. In particular, the duties of a notary public, including the preparation of both acts, were discussed. The study also analyzes the notary's obligation to assess whether the property indicated in the foundation deed is sufficient to achieve the foundation's goals.

The test loads are an indispensable part of quality control of the foundation piles. Typical examples of foundation piles settlements as presented in this paper are one of the four stages of interpreting the test load results. The remaining stages which accompany the interpretation, i.e. determination of maximum displacement for given load degrees, reparation of an auxiliary diagram, determination of maximum and limit load will be dealt with in the future.

In this study, a mathematical formulation for static bending analysis of a beam on a non-homogenous foundation is presented. The proposed method offers an accurate procedure for analysis and design of a beam resting on a varying soil bed. The Winkler foundation model is used and presented using discontinuous functions to account for the sudden change in the soil stiffness coefficient. The solution of the governing differential equation is then obtained using the Galerkin method with the help of approximation functions that satisfy the boundary conditions. A systematic approach for setting the approximation functions for different support and soil conditions is suggested. The accuracy of the proposed method is verified through two numerical examples, and they showed an excellent agreement with the finite element method (FEM) and available literature results.

Artykuł przedstawia porównanie dwóch technologii do tworzenia aplikacji desktopowych opartych o język C#. Analiza dotycząca wykorzystania procesora, pamięci RAM oraz czasu wykonywania operacji została przeprowadzona na technologiach Windows Presentation Foundation i Windows Forms. Do badań wykorzystano aplikacje o tej samej funkcjonalności w obu technologiach. W analizie porównawczej uwzględniono czasy danych operacji oraz wydajność aplikacji.
The article presents a comparison of two technologies for creating desktop applications based on C#. The analysis conserns the use of the processor, RAM and time of the operation was carried out on the technologies of Windows Presentation Foundation and Windows Forms. The research use applications with the same functionality in both technologies. The comparative analysis took into account the times of operations and application performance.

The formation of a pile in the existing foundation and soil creates a new foundation construction which has a structure of foundation-pile-soil. This construction must be able to transfer loads from the foundation to the pile and from the pile to the soil. The pile structure has to transfer an imposed load. From the point of view of continuum mechanics determination of the capacity of such a system is preceded by the analysis of contact problem of three contact surfaces. Each of these surfaces is determined by different pairs of materials. The pair which creates a pile anchorage is a material from which the foundation is built (structure of stone and grout, brick and grout, concrete or reinforced concrete and grout. The pile structure is formed by grout and steel rebar. The pile formed in soil is created by a pair of grout and soil. What is important is that on contact surfaces the materials adhering to one another are subjected to different deformation types that are controlled by mechanical properties and geometry of these surfaces. In the paper, additional conditions that should be fulfilled for the foundation-pile-soil system to make load transfer from foundation to soil possible and safe are presented. The results of research done by the author on foundation-pile contact surface are discussed. The tests were targeted at verifying the bearing capacity of anchorage and deformation of piles made of grout and other materials from which foundations are built. The specimens were tested in tension and compression. The experiments were conducted on the amount specimens which is regarded as small sample to enable the statistical analysis of the results.

This paper discusses a list of information and issues that causes of structural failure in the foundations and footings of a building. When a load is gradually applied on a foundation, settlement occurs which is almost elastic to begin with. Opis:
Soil-steel composite structures are usually designed with the use of analytical methods presented in such standards as SDM, CHBDC, or ASHTOO. Nevertheless, none of those standards introduces an analytical method for designing flexible foundations. Therefore, such foundations are usually designed with the use of time consuming and labor intensive full FEM analysis. In this paper the author makes an attempt at using classical foundations engineering solutions and models a corrugated steel plate foundation as an elastic beam on Winkler foundation. Moreover, he tries to find a method that takes into account layered configurations of geological substrates. Subsequently, the obtained values are compared against corresponding FEM analysis results. Likewise, the author evaluates the usefulness and accuracy of the presented computational approach.

It is rather unusual that as many as four German museums within the remit of three independent institutions are devoted to one artist – Ernst Barlach (1870–1938), a representative of modernist art, sculptor, graphic artist and writer, whose life and work significantly influenced 20th-century art history. His life and works have been commemorated in four places, two of which are museums in Wedel (the artist’s birthplace) and in Ratzenburg (where he spent his youth), managed by the Ernst Barlach Association in Hamburg. Meanwhile, the Ernst Barlach House in Hamburg preserves the collection once created by the manufacturer Hermann F. Reemtsma (1892–1961), which is exhibited in a museum in Jenisch Park (Hamburg– Nienstedten) designed by the architect Werner Kallmorgen (1902–1979). The Ernst Barlach Foundation stores the artist’s legacy, the world’s most comprehensive set of his works from the years 1888–1938, in Güstrow in Mecklenburg–Western Pomerania. The creation of the Foundation immortalised the artist’s history and creative development. He died in Rostock in September 1938 and Nikolaus Barlach (1906–2001), his son and only heir, inherited not only the artist’s estate but also his legacy. The son preserved the collection with the help of experts on Barlach’s work. He managed to keep it undamaged even during the Nazi period. After 1945, he delegated the task of preserving his father’s legacy to Friedrich Schult (1889–1978), a drawing teacher from Güstrow, whose major achievement was publishing the first catalogues of Barlach’s works between 1958 and 1971. However, in the East Germany formed in 1949, Barlach’s works were widely controversial. Once both German states had been united in 1990, the political order changed and after some negotiations, the whole legacy preserved in Güstrow together with the house–workshop was sold by the heirs to trustees from the Foundation of Culture of Federal States in 1993, who recommended at the same time that the goods form part of a foundation for the public benefit. The Federal Republic of Germany, the Foundation of Culture and the federal state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania were deeply involved in this purchase. The Foundation deals with Barlach’s life and work, but its main field of activity are museum works: storing, collecting, preserving, researching and promoting the artist’s output. It also functions as a research centre for Barlach’s work, arranges international cooperation in its projects with other museums and institutions, organises exhibitions and issues various publications.

This paper reports results from 1g model tests carried out under single gravity on a skirted foundation installed in sand and subjected to a rapid uplifting force. The effects of displacement rates ranging from 5 mm/s to 450 mm/s on the ultimate capacity, suction pressure inside the skirt compartment, and time of extraction were investigated. Test results indicate that the displacement rate significantly affected the magnitude of uplift resistance, as well as the magnitude of suction under the foundation lid, but had little effect on the relationship between stress and the displacement of the foundation. The shapes of the uplift capacity-displacement curve and the suction-displacement curve were similar for all experimental displacement rates.
