The author sought to show the image of Podlasia, as it was described by young Stefan Żeromski in the years of 1887-1890 in his Diaries. The future great Polish writer was already then distinguished with an extraordinary ability to observe the surrounding world, therefore his reports can be regarded as a faithful description of the then reality. The excerpts from the Diary quoted here show, first of all, the fortunes of the people of Podlasia under Russian partition, thus various manifestations of the process of Russification and the persecution of Unites.

This article presents the views of the French clergy on the theological and on the political during the counter-revolutionary and traditionalist pontificate of Pius IX (1846-1878). Its aim is show the many parallels and similarities between theological thought and political thought. In the era of subsequent political revolutions and the secularization French clergy look for the defender of Church. After the collapse of the catholic monarchy, the only possible defender is the Papacy. Ultramontanism program is the concept of the recognition of the Pope for the last point of defense before the Satan's revolution. Therefore Ultramontanism is a counter-revolutionary movement. Politics and religion come together in the great synthesis of the Catholic counter-revolution. The head of this movement the ultramontanes see in the Bishop of Rome.

The article raises an issue of students’ cognition of literary texts from the nineteenth century included in the core curriculum. The author draws attention to the difficulties associated with understanding the literal and metaphorical language that varies from the everyday lan-guage of the students. The author also introduces methods to mitigate these problems and proposes a form of classroom exercises which facilitate the analysis and interpretations of literary works.

This article falls into the trend of restoring the memory of the so-called creators of minorum gentium, that is, „smaller format”. It contains basic biographical information which was obtained through the inquiry, concerning the forgotten Lviv writer Bolesław Eulenfeld, as well as a literary sketch of his work, along with its reception at the time (and contemporary). During his lifetime, Eulenfeld was an extremely prolific and popular playwright in Galicia, children’s literature writer, and even an actor for several years. Today he is mentioned rarely, hardly ever, so we decided to bring his profile closer and restore the memory of him.

The paper is devoted to the research on the nineteenth-century women’s diaries, memoirs, and epistolography, carried out in the years 2013– 2017 as part of the international project of the National Program for the Development of Humanities: “Memoirs and letters of Polish authors from the Western Krai (Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine) in the years 1795–1918”. It discusses the status and role of the nineteenth-century women’s egodocuments in contemporary humanities. The study refers to the importance of autobiographical reflection and cultural perspective, and the major point of reference are selected examples of collections of manuscript letters, memoirs, and diaries of Polish women authors from the so-called Taken Lands1 (Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine) in the nineteenth century, and those women who were associated with these areas only for a period of time, as well as those who only wrote about the Taken Lands. This article focuses primarily on the collections of manuscripts in Lithuanian and Ukrainian archives and libraries (Wróblewski Library of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences in Vilnius, Lithuanian State Historical Archives in Vilnius, Central State Historical Archives of Ukraine in Kiev, Vernadsky National Library, Central State Historical Archives of Ukraine in Lviv, V. Stefanyk National Scientific Library).
Artykuł poświęcony jest problematyce badań nad dziewiętnastowieczną literaturą pamiętnikarską oraz epistolografią kobiecą, jakie w latach 2013–2017 prowadzone były w ramach międzynarodowego projektu Narodowego Programu Rozwoju Humanistyki: „Pamiętniki i listy polskich autorów z Ziem Zabranych (Litwa, Białoruś, Ukraina) 1795–1918”. Dyskusji poddano status i miejsce dziewiętnastowiecznych kobiecych egodokumentów we współczesnej humanistyce. Odwołano się do znaczenia refleksji autobiograficznej i perspektywy kulturowej w tych badaniach, za punkt odniesienia przyjmując wybrane przykłady rękopiśmiennych kolekcji listów oraz pamiętników i dzienników polskich autorek pochodzących z tzw. Ziem Zabranych (Litwa, Białoruś, Ukraina) w XIX w. lub tych kobiet, które związane były z tymi terenami wyłącznie przez jakiś okres swojego życia, bądź piszących o Ziemiach Zabranych. W niniejszym artykule uwagę skoncentrowano przede wszystkim na zbiorach rękopiśmiennych litewskich i ukraińskich archiwów i bibliotek (Biblioteka Litewskiej Akademii Nauk im. Wróblewskich w Wilnie, Litewskie Państwowe Archiwum Historyczne w Wilnie, Centralne Państwowe Archiwum Historyczne Ukrainy w Kijowie, Biblioteka Narodowa im. W. In 2020, Chelion Begass published a book on impoverished nobility in Prussia at the turn of the nineteenth century. The aim of this discussion article is to assess the scholarly merits of this publication and to evaluate the new research approach proposed by the authoress. It should be emphasised that the very topic of the work is innovative in itself. Begass focuses on the impoverished nobility, i.e. this part of the social stratum that was not able to live a life suited for the nobility due to insufficient financial resources. Such nobles experienced contradictions that arose from the discrepancy between high social prestige and uncertain livelihood. The book identifies the causes and consequences of this situation. In the subsequent chapters, Begass discusses the policy of the Prussian State towards the impoverished nobility and then presents the results of her research on poverty experienced by the nobility. The authoress makes use of the approach of cultural anthropology and attempts to demonstrate the worldview of investigated nobles. Her studies indicate that the impoverished nobility had to face the new economic circumstances and the emerging bourgeois society as early as at the turn of the nineteenth century, i.e. much earlier than the aristocracy placed higher in the social hierarchy. Begass’s research demonstrates the necessity to take a different view of the history of Prussian nobility. One needs to take into account the heterogeneity of this social group, the economic condition of its members, their relations with the monarchy, and the different paths that led them to modernity.

The second half of the 19th century in the history of Polish music is a neglected period, both in the aspect of performance and the aspect of research on this music. Unfortunately, works of many composers from this period have been forgotten. One of such composers is undoubtedly Aleksander Zarzycki (1834–1895), a composer, teacher, virtuoso pianist; the author of over 40 opuses and the composer of many solo songs with piano accompaniment, which were often compared to the songs of Stanisław Moniuszko. Similarly to the most famous Polish composer of songs, Zarzycki created two songbooks that are part of the trend of egalitarian songs. He was also renowned for his short piano pieces, written in a salon style with virtuoso elements. One of his most famous works was the Mazurka in G major, which was popularised by the Spanish virtuoso violinist Pablo Sarasate. Also noteworthy is his Piano Concerto in A flat major Op. 17, referring to the Piano Concerto in A minor by Fryderyk Chopin and the Concerto in G minor by Józef Wieniawski. Zarzycki’s works are characteristic of his era, including references to folklore, national style, virtuosity and the socalled "Romantic mood".

This article concerns the book Prus. Śledztwo biograficzne [Prus. A biographical investigation] by Monika Piątkowska, a new biography of the nineteenth-century writer that enjoys great readership. However, it contains many superficial interpretations and simplifying applications. Piątkowska argues that in his stories and novels, Bolesław Prus included many autobiographical elements. This interpretation key fails. The schematic depiction of the psychological layer of literary works, the lack of references to previous studies of the work and life of Prus, disregarding the intellectual dimension of his biography – these are the most significant drawbacks of this book. The author of the review shows examples of the researcher’s simplifications and lack of competence.

The article’s aim is to present Bolesław Prus’s [Aleksander Głowacki’s] early literary endavours in the light of the reception of Hippolite Taine’s psychological studies at the turn of the sixties and seventies of the nineteenth century. The Author challenges the common conviction of the fact that Taine’s work has not been a strong point of reference for Prus before 1880 and shows how the strategies of gaining knowledge described by the French philosopher are reflected in the structure and peculiar fragments of Prus’s Warsaw sketches. The syncretism of those literary pieces, that join Prus’s column writing style with journalistic interventionism on the one hand and romantic musings of the literary wanderer, a figure at the core of the stories, on the other allows to show writer’s indecisiveness as a sign of positivistic doubt in approachableness of the nature of reality and of every singular experience.

The article reviews Agata Seweryn’s book titled Between the Worlds. Studies in the Literature of the Enlightenment and Romanticism, accounting for the composition of the book, examining research problems raised in it in greater detail, and discussing essays included in the publication as supplementing existing interpretations of selected Romantic works. Seweryn is argued to draw attention to those aspects that reveal the richness inherent in the discussed works, which are demonstrated as not having been exhausted yet. These works are analysed in the reviewed book by pursing references to the baroque tradition, or by reflecting on their relationship with normative poetics and rhetoric.

The article discusses linguistic and non-verbal features of 19th-century savoir-ivre. Babie lato [Indian Summer] by Stefania Ulanowska (1839–?), the source text under scrutiny, is a 21-page short story, which has most probably never come out in print. There are four conversation situations in the text: 1) a symmetrical setup (the interlocutors have equal social status and comparable pragmatic rank), 2) a symmetrical setup with asymmetrical features, related to the conversation between a man and a woman, 3) a less distanced asymmetrical setup, where the participants of the conversation are the mother and children, 4) a full asymmetric setup, in which the mistress of the house addresses the maid. The short story moreover features non-verbal etiquette features, such as a man tipping over his hat when he sees a woman and a man kissing a woman’s hand. The characteristics of etiquette observed in Babie lato are a supplement to the deliberations on savoir-vivre in the 19th century and confirm the changes that took place at that time in terms of courtesy in comparison with the old Polish period. They are also a testimony to the old culture of the nobility, transferred to bourgeoisie houses.

The present text outlines the school reforms carried out in the first half of the nineteenth century. As the timeframe suggests, these reforms were launched and implemented by the then authorities of the Duchy of Warsaw and the Russian authorities administering the Russian part of partitioned Poland. The author attempts to indicate the most important goals and assumptions of thereforms as well as their immediate educational and social consequences. The text is far from being a comprehensive description of the problem but rather serves as an introduction to the substance of the issue under investigation and its political and economic conditioning.

Artykuł przybliża relacje XIX-wiecznych ojców (Wincenty Pol i Gustaw Zieliński) z dziećmi. Analiza ich korespondencji wydaje się potwierdzać tezę, że uczestniczyli w życiu swoich najbliższych nieco korespondencyjnie. Obaj ojcowie, osoby-instytucje, postaci ważne w polskim społeczeństwie, zaangażowane w obowiązki publiczne nie mieli wystarczająco dużo okazji, aby w pełni uczestniczyć w dorastaniu dzieci. Pobyty z bliskimi, czego świadectwem (opublikowana w przypadku Pola i ogłaszana po raz pierwszy w przypadku Zielińskiego) korespondencja – wypełnione były przygotowaniami do kolejnych podróży, wypraw i prac badawczych, organizowanych uroczystości. Brak ten rekompensowali więc systematyczną korespondencją.
This article approaches the relationship of the 19th century fathers (Wincenty Pol and Gustaw Zieliński), with their children. The analysis of their correspondence, supports the theory, that they both participated in the lives of their loved ones, rather only by letters. Both fathers, men-institution, figures important in the Polish then society, involved in public duties, did not have enough chances to fully participate in reaching adolescence by their children. Stays with their families, about which testimony can be found (in already published corrspondence of Wincenty Pol, and for the first time being made public Gustaw Zieliński’s letters) – were filled with preparations for further journeys, expeditions, research works, and planned events. Such lack of their presence was compensated by regular correspondence.

The aim of the article is to present the linguistic image of Polish scholars and research- ers whose profiles, biographies and obituaries were published in the Warsaw weekly newspaper Wędrowiec (Traveller) in the second half of the nineteenth century. Ana- lysing the collected texts, the author distinguished a set of seven aspects which were taken into account by the journalists of Wędrowiec to present the profiles of the schol- ars. Those aspects are the following: the subject of research, scientific achievements, journalistic and publishing activities, didactic and educational activities, science-pro- moting activities, organisational activities, awards and distinctions. They were deter- mined by the points of view adopted by the authors of the texts. There are three domi- nant points of view: the one of an expert, a Pole and a positivist. These points of view coexist and complement each other. The expert and specialist informed the reader in detail about the scientific career and achievements of the scholars. The Polish publi- cist expressed his joy at the international success of his countrymen. He observed their research and scientific achievements with attention; especially those that influenced the development of fields important for the country. The positivist and journalist noticed and emphasised the utilitarian dimension of the scientific and research activities of the scholars.
