Opis:
The paper presents the results of the pitting resistance investigations of selected stainless steels in the chloride environment and the simultaneous impact of erosive factors using the cyclic polarization technique. Additionally, using electrochemical techniques, ie: electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and measurement of corrosion potential, the behavior of the passive layer of selected stainless steels in the environment of chlorides and erosion was examined. On the basis of the obtained results, the resist-ance of stainless steels 1.4301 and 1.4404 was found, both on the effect of chloride ions and erosive factors in the studied systems. Both tested steels are susceptible to pitting corrosion. It was found that a good measure of erosive impact on stainless steel is both impedance spectrum analysis and continuous monitoring of the corrosion potential of steel.

Opis:
The present paper deals with the influence of pitting corrosion on mechanical properties of mild and low alloy steels and strength of steel structures under static and quasi-static loads. Pitting corrosion is a very important phenomenon that influence local strength of ship hull members. The present paper is based mainly on Japanese publications. Analyzing the standard tensile diagrams one can see that that pitting corrosion reduces the load corresponding to yield stress (YS) and, even more markedly, tensile strength UTS, reduces almost to zero plastic flow strains at YS load level and dramatically reduces the total elongation to fracture. Nominal UTS load for uniformly corroded specimens is higher than that for pitted specimens at the same average thickness loss. The strength related to the true fracture surface area (i.e. reduced by pits, taking into account real path of the crack through the pits) is almost independent of the thickness loss and is almost the same as for uniform thickness loss. For wide specimens the tensile strength depends mainly on the local deformation ability, and the maximum loading ability for large members, predicted on the base of the total true fracture surface area, can be overestimated. Concept of equivalent thickness loss for plates under bending and compression and for more complex structural models as well as relation between the average and the equivalent thickness losses has been presented. Approach based on degree of pitting (ratio of pitted area to total plate surface area) has been shown as a real and more convenient than the approach based on the thickness loss.

In the paper has been discussed influence of stresses on general corrosion rate and corrosion pit nucleation rate and growth , whose presence has been questioned by some authors but accepted by most of them. Influence of roughness of pit walls on fatigue life of a plate suffering pit corrosion and presence of the so called „ non-damaging” pits which never lead to initiation of fatigue crack, has been presented. Possibility of prediction of pit-to-crack transition moment by two different ways, i.e. considering a pit a stress concentrator or an equivalent crack, has been analyzed. Also, influence of statistical distribution of depth of corrosion pits as well as anticorrosion protection on fatigue and corrosion fatigue has been described.

Opis:
Stainless steel 316L is one of the most common metallic biomaterials used for implants. Its passive surface provides a good corrosion resistance in the body environment, which can be reduced by surface mechanical damages. This is the reason why the bone screws made of stainless steel 316L were subjected to laboratory analysis in the initial state, after diversified implantation period and after mechanical damage of the surface. The mechanical damages were estimated on the basis of stereoscopic and scanning electron microscope (SEM). In order to estimate the pitting and crevice corrosion resistance, potentiodynamic and potentiostatic examinations were performed. On the basis of obtained results it can be stated that despite the visible damages on the surface, the investigated screws present a good pitting corrosion resistance. However, the way the screws were fastened caused frictional corrosion and existing cavities led to crevice corrosion. Moreover, clear correlation between magnitude of mechanical damages of the surface, implantation time and screws corrosion resistance was observed.

Opis:
Stainless steels are widely used for various automotive components. Some of them (e.g., parts of the exhaust system) are exposed to the external environment. In winter conditions, they are affected by chloride containing road salt solutions, which can lead to the local corrosion of these stainless steel parts. The presented paper is focused on the pitting corrosion resistance of two austenitic stainless steels (AISI 304 and AISI 316L) in 5 wt% and 10 wt% road salt solutions. The evaluation and comparison are based on the potentiodynamic polarization test method carried out at the temperature of 20 ± 2°C. The pitting potentials were determined from the polarization curves. Local corrosion damage of exposed surfaces caused by potentiodynamic polarization in the used solutions was observed by optical microscope. Experimental results confirmed a worse pitting corrosion resistance case, especially for AISI 304 stainless steel in 10 wt% road salt solution.

The paper presents the examples of damage of elements caused by incorrect assessment of pipeline work conditions. The presented damage cases resulted in the need to replace pipelines. This work is an analysis pertaining to the impact of chemical and microbiological synergy of corrosion on stainless steel pipelines. The paper investigates the corrosion mechanisms that may occur under normal operating conditions at each water treatment station, and the methods of counteracting the corrosion were indicated. The analysis of the corrosion mechanisms was formulated taking into account the design stage, – the correctness of the steel grade choice by the designer, the stage of implementation – the most common implementation errors, and the operational stage – optimization of the technological system work and the effects of the introduced changes. The analysis was carried out at a water treatment plant in Poland with a maximum flow of 20,000 m3 a day-1, which draws raw water from deep water intakes and from a surface intake. The treatment technology includes an aeration system (aeration) and a two-stage treatment process using sand and carbon filters. The disinfection process and prophylaxis in the water treatment plant is based on the use of chlorine gas.

The effect of rapid cooling by the vacuum suction casting method (VSC) on the microstructure and electrochemical response of the as-cast 5052 aluminium alloy is presented. The VSC method allowed us to obtain massive samples with a very high cooling rate (102 – 103)oC/s. The microstructure of the quick-cooled sample (QC) has been significantly changed. Finer grains and more-homogeneous intermetallic phase distribution has been observed. Corrosion potential (OCP) and polarization measurements (LSV) revealed a higher activity of the QC alloy than ingot (IN), which leads to a denser and thicker corrosion-product formation on the surface. Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) indicates higher resistance values, which suggests a greater thickness of the corrosion products.

In present work, the results of corrosion analysis of pitting and general corrosion of austenitic duplex 2205 (EN 1.4462) stainless steel in Ringer's solution, are presented. The corrosion rate was studied using potentiodynamic polarisation method by means of the ATLAS 98 potentiostat with POL 98 software. For these measurements the platinum EPT-101 and calomel reference EK-101P electrodes were used. For each run, the electrolytic cell made of glass was used, containing up to 500 ml of the electrolyte. The specimens used for the studies were obtained from a cold-rolled sheet of steel in three forms: as received (without any pretreatment), after abrasive polishing, and after electrochemical polishing. Some of them were passivated for 15 and 30 minutes, respectively, in 20% HNO3 by volume. The study results show clearly that the samples of duplex 2205 stainless steels after electropolishing and passivation for 15 minutes in 20% HNO3 by volume revealed the highest corrosion resistance.

Opis:
This paper presents results of pitting corrosion resistance of TIG (autogenous and with filler metal) and A-TIG welded lean duplex stainless steel S82441/1.4662 evaluated according to ASTM G48 method, where autogenous TIG welding process was applied using different amounts of heat input and shielding gases like pure Ar and Ar+N2 and Ar+He mixtures. The results of pitting corrosion resistance of the welded joints of lean duplex stainless steel S82441 were studied in as weld conditions and after different mechanical surface finish treatments. The results of the critical pitting temperature (CPT) determined according to ASTM G48 at temperatures of 15, 25 and 35°C were presented. Three different surface treatment after welding were applied: etching, milling, brushing + etching. The influence of post weld surface treatment was studied in respect to the pitting corrosion resistance, basing on CPT temperature. Research on TIG welding of lean duplex stainless steel S82441/1.4662 showed a clear influence of the applied shielding gas mixtures, where the addition of 5 to 15% N2 to Ar virtually no effect on the level of resistance to pitting corrosion, only 5% N2 addition has a positive effect, while use of a mixture of 50% Ar + 50% He compared with welding at 100% Ar atmosphere, can significantly reduce the resistance to pitting corrosion. Definite good results were obtained during TIG welding with the participation of activation flux (A-TIG). The weld surface of lean duplex stainless S82441/1.4662 obtained in A-TIG welding without the addition of filler metal has a much lower tendency to pitting corrosion than traditional welds made by TIG method. Pitting corrosion resistance of welds made by A-TIG improved with the increase of the heat input in the tested range of welding current 100-200 A. It was also found that the intensity of the occurrence of pitting does not affect the method of cleaning welds after welding, but the mechanical removal of a thin surface layer of metal significantly reduces their intensity.

Growing demands imposed on passenger car producers concerning the reduction of exhaust emission to the environment are forcing a search for new materials and design solutions. One of the most-important factors that can reduce this emission is the low mass of a vehicle, leading to a decrease in its average fuel consumption. A reduction in weight can be obtained by the use of aluminum elements instead of steel; e.g., in air conditioning pipes, decreasing the specific weight of the construction by nearly three times. In the present study, the influence of the SWAAT corrosion test on A/C piping made from 3xxx, 5xxx, and 6xxx series aluminum alloys was investigated. The study focused on changes in the mechanical properties of samples before and after a SWAAT test determined by a tensile test and Vickers hardness measurements. Additionally, microstructure examinations were performed with the use of optical and scanning microscopy. Corrosion products on the surface of pipes were identified by Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy. Pipes made from the EN AW 6063 alloy revealed an almost 50% decrease in its strength properties after the tests. The largest decline in plastic properties was observed in pipes made from the EN AW 6060 alloy.

Opis:
Temperature is considered a complicated external factor of the susceptibility of stainless steels to the pitting. This paper deals with the corrosion behaviour of AISI 316Ti stainless steel in temperature range 22 - 80°C in aggressive chloride environments (3 and 5% FeCl3 solutions). The corrosion resistance of tested steel is evaluated on the base of results of exposure immersion tests and cyclic potentiodynamic tests. According to the obtained results the resistance of AISI 316Ti to the pitting is markedly affected by temperature changes in the range 22 - 80°C. Intensity of corrosion attack increases with the rise of Cl¯ concentration. Gentle changes of temperature and Cl¯ concentration cause significant differences in character of local damage. The appearance of pitted surfaces changes with the rise of the temperature (a density of pitting increases, a size of pits decreases). The strongest change in appearance is observed between 40 and 50ºC.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to compare the pitting corrosion resistance of two austenitic stainless steels, AISI 304L and AISI 316Ti, which are often used for agricultural machinery building. For the corrosion experiments, animal slurry from a pig farm was used. The results obtained from electrochemical corrosion experiments were proceeded by significance tests in Statistica software. The average value of the pitting corrosion potential of AISI 304L stainless steel in the animal slurry is equal 1044.3±146.6 mVSCE whereas the average potential for AISI 316Ti SS equals 1058.4 ±28.3m mVSCE. Corrosion potential of AISI 304L SS is equal 549±80.5 mVSCE, while for AISI 316Ti SS it equals 425.9±80.5 mVSCE. The range of pitting corrosion potentials of AISI 304L SS (364 mVSCE) was over four times higher than that for AISI 316Ti SS (84 mVSCE); the minimum values of pitting corrosion potential for AISI 304L SS (779 mVSCE) was lower than that obtained for AISI 316Ti SS (1012 mVSCE). On the basis of the results it may be concluded that AISI 304L stainless steel is less resistant in case of pitting corrosion resistance than AISI 316Ti SS. For this reason, austenitic AISI 316Ti stainless steel should be used for the transportation or storage of animal slurry.
