Innovation in business is the key to its development, and a decisive factor as regards the level of market competitiveness. The “life” of every enterprise consists of many interdependent processes. Occupational health and safety is an area which accompanies all of those workplace processes. Innovation, i.e. broadly understood organisational and process-related changes are one way of improving the health and safety at work. Innovation in the fi eld of OHS involves ideas on how to improve the existing, and how to introduce new solutions aimed at enhancing the quality of work. Opis:
The concept of corporate social responsibility has taken hold in contemporary business discourse. It is a concept which denotes a readiness on the part of an organisation to take and bear responsibility for the effects of their decisions and actions in the society and natural environment. As part of the concept, enterprises increase the level of investment in environmental protection, human resources, and relationship with the stakeholders. Ensuring healthy and safe conditions in a workplace as well as taking care of employee health is undoubtedly part of any company’s social obligations, and as such might be considered an integral element of corporate social responsibility. In the light of the corporate social responsibility concept, occupational health and safety is an investment which increases the competitiveness of the enterprise involved.

The main problems in occupational health and safety (OHS) system in Estonia (a postcommunist new European Union Member State) are analyzed and the implementation of a simple, flexible risk assessment method is presented. The study aimed to assess the working environment, the employers’ possibilities and willingness to carry out risk assessment, ways to manage risks and the steps being taken towards progressive improvement in OHS. The role of the Estonian Labour Inspectorate in the risk observatory is that of the main key authority in data collection and information dissemination in OHS.

Niniejszy artykuł to próba odpowiedzi na pytanie: „Dlaczego szkolenie w dziedzinie bezpieczeństwa i higieny pracy jest traktowane przez pracowników jako nudny obowiązek?” Przedstawione zostało w nim prawodawstwo dotyczące szkoleń bhp w Polsce, podstawowe definicje związane z przedmiotowymi szkoleniami, elementarny pierwiastek procesu dydaktycznego jakim jest komunikacja z grupą oraz osobisty pogląd autora, poparty kilkunastoletnim doświadczeniem trenera w dziedzinie bhp.
The main aim of that case study is the answer to the question ”Why is a training in a master of OSH (Occupational Safety and Heath) treated as a dull duty by the employees?” In the case study there was introduced the legislation concerning OSH trainings in Poland, main definitions dealing with the subject and elementary matter of the didactic process, which is communication with the group as well as a personal attitude of the author argued by a great experience of a trainer in the subject of OSH.

Organizacje często używają systemu zarządzania bezpieczeństwem i higieną pracy. Podstawowe kompetencje menedżera w organizacji powinny także zawierać znajomość tego obszaru. Artykuł porównuje normalne modele kompetencji z podstawowymi zasadami higieny i bezpieczeństwa pracy, a także z zasadami podejścia procesowego. Wynikiem jest rekomendacja, żeby zwiększyć kompetencje w procesie zarządzania. Jednostka będzie uczyć się szerokiego zakresu specjalistycznej wiedzy przez długi czas.

The intense development of nanotechnology in recent years poses the basic question about the safety of employees who work with nanomaterials. The study attempts to determine how employers should regulate health protection when working with nanoparticles. Employers should be aware of the importance of the risks associated with nanotechnology and their responsibility for worker health and safety. The study is a continuation of the author’s previous analyses of ways to regulate occupational safety and health in the use of nanomaterials. The author examines the theory of responsive regulation in the context of health and safety with nanomaterials and the importance of dialogue in this regulatory process. The regulatory agencies should intervene in this area depending on the attainment of the assumed objectives of the law. The sense of responsibility for the effect could improve the quality of OH&S with nanomaterials.

This was a baseline study on occupational exposure and health problems among women workers in export processing zones. Physical, chemical, and ergonomic hazards were evaluated and measured through workplace ambient monitoring, survey questionnaires, and interviews with 500 respondents in 24 companies (most were female at 88.8%). The top 5 hazards were ergonomic hazards (72.2%), heat (66.6%), overwork (66.6%), poor ventilation (54.8%), and chemical exposure (50.8%). The most common illnesses were gastrointestinal problems (57.4%), backache (56%), headache (53.2%), and fatigue/weakness (53.2%). Logistic regression showed an association between certain work-related factors and occupational illnesses, and psychosocial problems. Highly significant associations were hearing loss with years spent in the company (p = .005) and gender (p = .006), headache and dizziness with poor ventilation (p = .000), backache with prolonged work (p = .003). These results will have implications for policy and program formulation for women workers’ concerns and issues in export zones.

Ze względu na ograniczone ramy artykułu autorzy w sposób bardzo ogólny ukazują główne kierunki dokonywania się zmian, o których mowa. Jak wynika z treści, są one wielopłaszczyznowe i zachodzi między nimi bardzo często sprzężenie zwrotne. Jednak - jak podkreślają autorzy - fundamentem wszelkich działań na rzecz ochrony życia i zdrowia pracowników jest świadomość społeczna ponoszenia odpowiedzialni za losy pracujących i ich rodzin.
Progress has accompanied humanity since its beginning. One of the areas in which this is manifested is in the improvement of working conditions in order to make them safe, healthy and decent. Due to the limited scope of the article, the authors show in a very general way the main directions the changes referred to have been introduced. As it clearly ensues from the content, the changes are multifaceted and overlap among them frequently occur. However, as emphasized by the authors, the foundation of any action to protect the lives and health of workers is the social consciousness of bearing the responsibility for the fate of the workers and their families.

Risk and safety management are very important issues in healthcare systems. Those are complex systems with many entities, hazards and uncertainties. In such an environment, it is very hard to introduce a system for evaluating and simulating significant hazards. In this paper, we analyzed different types of hazards in healthcare systems and we introduced a new fuzzy model for evaluating and ranking hazards. Finally, we presented a developed software solution, based on the suggested fuzzy model for evaluating and monitoring risk.

The concept of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has a tremendous impact on the Human Capital Management, which is manifested in new trends in rewarding, such as responsible rewarding or total rewards approach. These approaches based on the assumptions of Corporate Social Responsibility promote the need for a holistic view on a human and therefore emphasize the working environment as an important aspect of the comprehensive employee rewarding policy within an organization. The aim of this paper is thus to raise awareness of the role that a supportive working environment and occupational health and safety (OSH) in particular play today in the effective and responsible employee management. The authors show an integrated view of OSH as a part of employee responsible rewarding. In this context, responsible rewarding takes into account the important issue of healthy and safe working conditions. This broad perception of employee rewarding allows the creation of a supportive work environment and strengthens the safety culture within the organization.

The article discusses criminal law regulations whose task is to protect employees from imminent dangers to life and health and resulting from the violation of health and safety at work. Therefore, the key offenses of art. 220 (Act - Penal Code, 1997) from the point of view of criminal responsibility were subject to analysis, as well as the premises that determine it. In this way, an attempt was made to define the protection and responsibility framework both in the subjective and objective dimension. In the further part of the study, the regulations protecting the life and health of employees with other penal regulations of a general nature were discussed, also in the context of criminal threat dimensions, as well as the premises for not being punished by the perpetrator.

The construction industry in India is the second most important contributor to its gross domestic product. However, high rate of accidents and fatalities have tarnished the image of industry in India. Although the industry contributes significantly to the Indian economy, safety management is the primary concern alongside with frequent workplace accidents. The role of safety management is vital to improve safety performance of an organization. The functions of safety management include planning, organizing, staffing, directing, controlling and coordinating safety activities with an aim to minimize accidents/injuries. Safety trainings, employee participation, compliance of safety procedures and motivational schemes are part of safety management which influences the overall safety performance. Several metrics were developed to measure the safety performance of an organization but not a single measure will reflect the overall performance. The present study considered parameters pertaining to the safety management which have influence on the safety performance of a construction organization in India. The parameters are analyzed by formulating a goal programming model. The results of the study suggests that much improvement is needed in the area of safety trainings and the revised targets were established.

The article describes modern kinds and types of floors – structural elements that play an important part in the occupational safety and health of human. It discusses the kinds of threats workers are exposed to when laying floors in industrial and public utility buildings, the kinds and forms of pollutants that are emitted and the ways the negative consequences of those pollutants on the human body can be counteracted.

The experience of economically developed countries proves that the quality of actions undertaken in the realm involving the management of the occupational health and safety may substantially contribute the attainment of higher OHS standards. A significant role in the improvement of OHS management quality is played among others by audit surveys of the management system of OHS which is viewed as a form of controlling tool. One of the first solutions of that type was applied in the mining industry in Poland, and they were based on the MERIT survey (Management Evaluation Regarding Itemized Tendencies). The mathematical model applied within the scope of that survey makes it possible to determine assessment indexes (final index WZBP and partial indexes WOPi). The results obtained from the survey carried out on a group of respondents – employees of departments of mining coal – were then used for the prediction of the assessment of the quality of actions undertaken in the area of OHS management (the linear discriminant function was applied as the prediction method).
Doświadczenia krajów rozwiniętych gospodarczo są dowodem na to, iż jakość działań podejmowanych w obszarze zarządzania bezpieczeństwem i higieną pracy może stanowić ważny element w procesie podnoszenia standardów bhp. Istotną rolę w tym zakresie spełniają m. in. badania audytowe systemu zarządzania bezpieczeństwem i higieną pracy będące formą i narzędziem kontrolingu. Jednym z pierwszych rozwiązań tego typu zastosowanym w przemyśle wydobywczym w Polsce były badania oparte na ankiecie MERIT (Management Evaluation Regarding Itemized Tendencies). Zastosowany w ramach ankiety model matematyczny pozwala na wyznaczenie wskaźników ocenowych (wskaźnika końcowego WZBP i wskaźników cząstkowych WOPi). Przedstawione w artykułem wyniki badań ankietowych przeprowadzonych na grupie respondentów – pracowników oddziałów górniczych kopalni – zostały następnie wykorzystane w procesie prognozowania oceny jakości działań podejmowanych w obszarze zarządzania bezpieczeństwem i higieną pracy (jako metodę prognozowania wykorzystano liniową funkcję dyskryminacyjną).
