The paper presents the key substantial and methodological aspects of motivation for work, with special attention paid to the analysis of classification of motivating factors. The selected, more important of them, have been described. A new approach to them has been presented in the form of the concept of trychotomy of motivating factors at work (i.e. in the environment, in the situation of work), which constitutes the evolution of the two-factor theory by Frederick Herzberg. This concept lists three groups of factors: "motivators" give satisfaction when present, "factors of hygiene" cause dissatisfaction when not present, and "demotivators" cause dissatisfaction when present. Their vectors of effect on satisfaction with work differ radically, although they are present at the same time in the work environment. That is why this concept constitutes the methodological directive which suggests expansion of the field of analysis of the conducted research by the factors which reduce motivation in the workplace.
W artykule przedstawiono węzłowe kwestie merytoryczne i metodyczne motywacji do pracy, ze szczególnym zwróceniem uwagi na analizę klasyfikacji czynników motywacji. Scharakteryzowano wybrane, ważniejsze z nich. Zaprezentowano nowe ich ujęcie w postaci koncepcji trychotomii czynników motywacji w pracy (tj. w środowisku, w sytuacji pracy), która stanowi rozwinięcie dwuczynnikowej teorii Fredericka Herzberga. W tej koncepcji wyróżniono trzy grupy czynników: "motywatory", które gdy występują, powodują zadowolenie; "czynniki higieny" - gdy nie występują, wywołują niezadowolenie; oraz "demotywatory" - gdy pojawiają się, powodują niezadowolenie. Ich wektory oddziaływania na zadowolenie z pracy różnią się diametralnie, chociaż występują one w środowisku pracy równocześnie. Dlatego też koncepcja ta stanowi dyrektywę metodologiczną sugerującą rozszerzenie pola analizy prowadzonych badań na czynniki zmniejszające motywację w pracy.

The problem of corporate governance and the connected executive remuneration system gains a special significance in relation to state-owned enterprises. A proper configuration of this system enables effective enterprise management, however, mistakes in its construction may be a source of negative behavior patterns of managers and may lead to disturbances on financial markets or even to financial crisis. The reasons for disturbances on the financial markets include the following: the manner in which the top management was operating and the oversight of public enterprises and especially, taking too much risk by the top management. This system should put the interests of shareholders and stakeholders first, while in many cases it prefers results achieved without tying them to long-term effectiveness criteria (European Commission 2004). Therefore, there is a need of looking for more effective mechanisms of motivating the managers. In Poland, the first steps were also made in the direction of improving the supervision system and especially, of creating an effective remuneration system for managers. The purpose of the hereby article is to diagnose the executive remuneration system in the state-owned enterprises and to analyze the tools verifying the efficiency of management and being a basis for bonuses. The publication presents the genesis and models of corporate governance taking into account various criteria for division. In addition, the conditions of remuneration of managers in companies with Treasury shareholding and assessment of managerial bonus systems were presented. The authors also present a proposal for optimizing assessment effectiveness regarding management for the purpose of constructing an efficient, measurable motivational system. Such a system should be based on shareholders’ value.
Problematyka corporate governance i związanego z nią systemu wynagradzania kadry menedżerskiej zyskuje szczególne znaczenie w odniesieniu do spółek z udziałem Skarbu Państwa. Właściwa konfiguracja tego systemu umożliwia efektywne zarządzanie przedsiębiorstwem, jednak błędy w jego konstrukcji mogą być źródłem negatywnych schematów zachowań kadry zarządzającej i mogą prowadzić do zakłóceń na rynkach finansowych, a nawet do kryzysu finansowego. Wśród przyczyn zawirowań na rynkach finansowych wymienia się między innymi: sposób sprawowania zarządu i nadzoru w spółkach publicznych, a zwłaszcza podejmowanie przez organy zarządcze nadmiernego ryzyka. System ten powinien preferować interesy akcjonariuszy i interesariuszy, tymczasem w wielu przypadkach bierze pod uwagę osiągane wyniki bez powiązania ich z długofalowymi kryteriami efektywnościowymi. Dlatego istnieje potrzeba poszukiwania skuteczniejszych mechanizmów motywowania menedżerów. Także w Polsce podjęto pierwsze kroki w kierunku poprawy systemu nadzoru, a zwłaszcza stworzenia skutecznego systemu wynagrodzeń dla menedżerów. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest diagnoza systemów wynagradzania menedżerów w spółkach z udziałem Skarbu Państwa wraz z analizą narzędzi weryfikujących efektywność zarządzania i będących podstawą do uzyskania premii. Publikacja prezentuje genezę oraz modele nadzoru korporacyjnego uwzględniając różne kryteria podziału. Ponadto pokazano uwarunkowania wynagrodzeń menedżerów w spółkach z udziałem Skarbu Państwa wraz z oceną systemów premiowania menedżerów. Autorzy przedstawiają również propozycję optymalizacji oceny efektywności zarządzania na potrzeby budowy skutecznego, parametrycznego systemu motywacyjnego. Taki system powinien opierać się na wartości dla akcjonariuszy.

This paper is about four Japanese university students majoring in international studies, who participated in a two-year study examining changes in their motivation. Using monthly interviews and a 29-item questionnaire on Dörnyei’s (2005) L2 motivational self system that was administered alongside each interview, the trajectories of learner motivation were investigated, based on both quantitative and qualitative data. First, changes in the participants’ motivation were identified using quantitative data. Next, a variety of motivators and demotivators that learners experienced both inside and outside of their classrooms were analyzed using the qualitative data. With the data obtained, this study focuses on how four learners’ language learning motivation and contexts adapt to each other, and how the dynamics of the four learners’ motivation changes due to their learning experiences. Each learner was different in their trajectory of motivation and the kinds of motivators and demotivators that they experienced in their particular contexts. The four learners underwent unique motivators and demotivators, and reacted differently. While participants identified their ideal L2 selves, or ought-to L2 selves, these self-guides were not strengthened by their L2 experiences over time. Based on these findings, the importance of studying the rich experiences of language learners in motivation research is discussed.

Motivation is widely accepted to be a crucial aspect of language learning, and a variety of models of motivation have been proposed over the years. The L2 Motivational Self System is a particularly interesting model that reconceptualizes motivation as a function of possible future self-guides, and has far-reaching pedagogical implications. Critics have pointed out that there is little evidence connecting L2 Motivational Self System to attainment, as it is inconsistently correlated with L2 proficiency and is only a weak predictor of results. However, as this paper details, these criticisms ignore the correlation between the L2 Motivational Self System and other behaviors and attitudes associated with attainment, such as willingness to communicate, self-efficacy, persistent learning, and low L2 anxiety.

Vision, that is, the mental representation of the sensory experience of a future goal state (involving imagination and imagery), is currently at the forefront of motivational innovation, and in recent years it has been seen increasingly more often in the motivational tool kit of practicing language teachers. Theories such as Dörnyei’s L2 motivational self system have explored the power that creating effective visions can harness (see, e.g., Dörnyei & Kubanyiova, 2014) and when viewed in conjunction with other current research avenues, such as future time perspective and dynamic systems theory, vision offers exciting potential. A Directed Motivational Current is a new motivational construct that we suggest is capable of integrating many current theoretical strands with vision: It can be described as a motivational drive which energises long-term, sustained behaviour (such as language learning), and through placing vision and goals as critical central components within this construct, it offers real and practical motivational potential. In this conceptual paper, we first discuss current understandings of vision and of Directed Motivational Currents, and then analyse how they may be optimally integrated and employed to create effective motivational pathways in language learning environments.

When we examine the empirical investigations of motivation in second and foreign language learning, even those drawing upon the latest theoretical paradigms, such as the L2 motivational self system (Dörnyei, 2009), it becomes clear that many of them still fail to take account of its dynamic character and temporal variation. This may be surprising in view of the fact that the need to adopt such a process-oriented approach has been emphasized by a number of theorists and researchers (e.g., Dörnyei, 2000, 2001, 2009; Ushioda, 1996; Williams & Burden, 1997), and it lies at the heart of the model of second language motivation proposed by Dörnyei and Ottó (1998). It is also unfortunate that few research projects have addressed the question of how motivation changes during a language lesson as well as a series of lessons, and what factors might be responsible for fluctuations of this kind. The present paper is aimed to rectify this problem by reporting the findings of a classroom-based study which investigated the changes in the motivation of 28 senior high school students, both in terms of their goals and intentions, and their interest and engagement in classroom activities and tasks over the period of four weeks. The analysis of the data collected by means of questionnaires, observations and interviews showed that although the reasons for learning remain relatively stable, the intensity of motivation is indeed subject to variation on a minute-to-minute basis and this fact has to be recognized even in large-scale, cross-sectional research in this area.

Celem niniejszego opracowania jest zdefiniowanie dysfunkcji procesu motywacyjnego oraz przedstawienie towarzyszącym temu zagadnieniu przyczynom i skutkom. Patologie systemu motywacyjnego w dzisiejszych czasach są dosyć często występującym zjawiskiem w polskich firmach. Towarzyszy temu coraz częściej niewiedza pracodawców w obszarze motywacji, niekompetencja bezpośrednich przełożonych w dziedzinie zarządzania personelem, jak również postępujący poziom bezrobocia. Pracownicy oceniani są przez pryzmat taniej siły roboczej i tak też są traktowani. Brak motywacji i odpowiedniego sposobu przeciwdziałania przejawom mobbingu czy dyskryminacji w miejscu pracy powoduje u podwładnych zanik poczucia własnej wartości i zaangażowania w wykonywane obowiązki służbowe. Tym samym prowadzić to może do nadmiernego stresu czy tzw. wypalenia zawodowego, niekiedy nawet do śmierci pracownika.
The aim of this study is to define the dysfunction of the motivational process and the presentation accompanying this issue causes and effects. Pathologies of the incentive system in this day and age are quite a frequently occurring phenomenon in Polish companies. This is accompanied by increasing ignorance of employers in the area of motivation, incompetence immediate superiors in the field of personnel management, as well as advancing the level of unemployment. Employees are evaluated through the prism of cheap labour and so they are treated. Lack of motivation and appropriate way to combat forms of harassment or discrimination in the workplace causes subordinates loss of self-esteem and commitment to duties performed. Thus, this could lead to excessive stress or so burnout, and sometimes even the death of the employee.

The theoretical emphasis within the L2 Motivational Self System has typically been on the two future self-guides representing possible (ideal and ought-to) selves, leaving the third main dimension of the construct, the L2 Learning Experience, somewhat undertheorized. Yet, this third component is not secondary in importance, as evidenced by empirical studies that consistently indicate that the L2 Learning Experience is not only a strong predictor of various criterion measures but is often the most powerful predictor of motivated behavior. This paper begins with an analysis of possible reasons for this neglect and then draws on the notion of student engagement in educational psychology to offer a theoretical framework for the concept. It is proposed that the L2 Learning Experience may be defined as the perceived quality of the learners’ engagement with various aspects of the language learning process.

The article focuses on written narratives of 51 Finnish university students who study German, Swedish or French as their major or one of their minors at an advanced level. The study aims to find what keeps these students motivated to study their L2. The data have been analyzed using analysis of narratives (Polkinghorne, 1995). Dörnyei’s (2009a, 2009b, 2014) L2 motivational self system (L2MSS), built around the concepts of ideal L2 self, ought-to L2 self and L2 learning experience, is used as the theoretical framework. The results indicate that perceived social pressure (ought-to L2 self) may be important when the study decision is made, but its importance diminishes during the studies. Instead, a future L2-related vision (ideal L2 self) as well as peers, teachers, course contents, and learning atmosphere (L2 learning experience) become increasingly important during the studies. The role of the emotional dimension of possible selves seems to be central in developing and preserving study motivation. At the end of the article, some implications of the results for higher education programs of languages other than English (LOTEs) are presented.

Two concepts of multilingualism that relate to the selves aspect of Dörnyei’s (2009) L2 motivational self system (L2MSS) are highlighted in this article: Thompson’s concept of perceived positive language interaction (PPLI) and Henry’s notion of the ideal multilingual self. With the dynamic model of multilingualism informing both concepts (Herdina & Jessner, 2002; Jessner, 2006, 2008), the intangible advantage that multilingual speakers have over monolingual speakers is clearly articulated in the discussion of this topic. The interconnectivity of language systems is an inherent aspect of the DMM; as such, both Thompson with PPLI and Henry with the ideal multilingual self incorporate the DMM as a framework to indicate the fluid nature of these constructs as additional language learning experiences are added to the system over time. This article further explores the dynamicity of multilingual learners’ language systems and the influences that induce change. Specifically, data from Thompson’s (2017b) study on LOTE learners are re-examined to explore this question. Additionally, excerpts from Natasha Lvovich’s (1997) The Multilingual Self, an autobiography of an L1 Russian speaker, are analyzed to present different possible models of incorporating the multilingual self and PPLI. The article ends with a discussion of an inherently multilingual context, as well as thoughts regarding the possibility of different types of future selves.

This study empirically compares two often-utilized motivation theories in L2 studies: self-determination theory and the L2 motivational self system. It also examines the relationships among their motivational constructs, learners’ intended L2 learning effort, and L2 proficiency. While a number of studies have utilized these models in order to examine second language learners’ motivation, there has not been a thorough comparison of the two. Furthermore, while many studies have demonstrated the structural relationships between the motivational constructs of the two theories and the learner’s self-reported amount of effort, fewer studies have examined their L2 achievement. The results of this study indicated that the constituents in the two theories are correlated as predicted. Furthermore, while internalized types of motivation in self-determination theory predicted intended learning effort, which then led to L2 proficiency, the strength of the ideal L2 self was much weaker than the L2 learning experience, unlike what is argued in the theory.

One of the most recent theoretical developments when it comes to the role of motivation in second language learning is the theory of the L2 motivational self system (e.g., Dörnyei, 2005). It has been proposed in recognition of the fact that learning a foreign language does not only involve acquiring a new communicative code, but also affects the personality of an individual, the difficulties involved in applying Gardner’s (1985) concept of integrativeness to foreign language contexts, as well as the mounting empirical evidence (e.g., Dörnyei & Csizér, 2002), demonstrating that key components of motivation, such as integrativeness, instrumentality, attitudes towards L2 speakers or manifestations of motivated learning behavior are intricately interrelated. As a result, the notion of integrativeness has been reinterpreted as the L2-specific aspect of an individual’s ideal self and the motivational system is believed to comprise the following three dimensions: (a) ideal L2 self, which is related to the abilities and skills that learners envisage themselves possessing, which may trigger a desire to reduce the distance between their actual and ideal selves, (b) ought-to L2 self, which is connected with the attributes that the learners believe are important in the eyes of significant others, and (c) L2 learning experiences, which is a context-related factor reflecting the nature of the immediate learning environment and learning experiences. This framework was applied in a qualitative study, the participants of which were 28 English majors in the last year of a three-year BA program who were interviewed about their motives for learning the target language. The analysis revealed that although motivational influences which have traditionally been regarded as important do play a role, there are a number of factors, such as family influence, instrumentality, knowledge orientation or international posture, that are also of vital importance.

The study explores the motivational profiles of Spanish EFL sports science university students from the second language (L2) motivation self system (L2MSS) perspective to ultimately support Spanish higher institutions´ plans committed to improving employability and competitiveness. The study analyzes the relationships between L2 motivation, L2 proficiency, gender, and L2 contextual variables using data from 196 English as a foreign language (EFL) sports science university students. The data reveal that the ideal L2 self construct stands out as the most salient and powerful factor, while the ought-to and rebellious L2 selves are less significant and there are items loading on both of them at the same time. Thus, higher means for the ideal L2 self motivation correspond to higher levels of L2 proficiency and are supported by L2 learning contextual variables. The strongest ought-to L2 self was registered in students with mid-low L2 proficiency and a lack of L2 learning experiences. Meanwhile, the rebellious L2 self is clearly distinguishable only for students with high L2 proficiency. Pedagogical and curricular implications of these findings are that the ideal and the rebellious L2 selves could positively predict students´ L2 proficiency. Thus, new dynamics of education should explore language teaching methodologies that are more likely to enhance students´ ideal and rebellious L2 selves.

This article reports the first meta-analysis of the L2 motivational self system (Dörnyei, 2005, 2009). A total of 32 research reports, involving 39 unique samples and 32,078 language learners, were meta-analyzed. The results showed that the three components of the L2 motivational self system (the ideal L2 self, the ought-to L2 self, and the L2 learning experience) were significant predictors of subjective intended effort (rs = .61, .38, and .41, respectively), though weaker predictors of objective measures of achievement (rs = .20, -.05, and .17). Substantial heterogeneity was also observed in most of these correlations. The results also suggest that the strong correlation between the L2 learning experience and intended effort reported in the literature is, due to substantial wording overlap, partly an artifact of lack of discriminant validity between these two scales. Implications of these results and directions for future research are discussed.

Każda organizacja, bez względu na specyfikę czy sektor, w którym funkcjonuje, tworzy własny system motywacyjny, czyli system oddziaływania na zespoły pracownicze. Celem tego systemu jest zachęcanie pracowników do podejmowania działań pożądanych i unikania zachowań niekorzystnych z punktu widzenia całej organizacji. System motywacyjny i składające się na niego czynniki motywujące są instrumentami, których wdrożenie wymaga wiedzy i umiejętności o roli człowieka w procesie pracy, a także o jego pozycji w otaczającym go świecie rzeczy i symboli (Penc, 1996, s. 139). System motywacyjny winien zmierzać do zbudowania organizacji opierającej się na wykwalifikowanej kadrze, która – szczególnie w sektorze publicznym i samorządzie terytorialnym – może wpłynąć na sukces w rodzącej się konkurencji w obrębie organizacji sektora publicznego.W artykule odniesiono się do problemu braku lub wadliwie funkcjonującego w obrębie samorządów gminnych systemu motywacyjnego na przykładzie pracowników urzędów. Na podstawie badań wśród urzędników podjęto próbę zdiagnozowania i oceny pozapłacowych czynników motywacyjnych – podstawą do tego był kwestionariusz ankiety przeprowadzony w urzędach samorządów gminnych Warmii i Mazur na przełomie 2013 i 2014 roku.
Each and every organization, regardless of specifics or sector of operations, creates its own motivational scheme—a system influencing the employee team. The objective of this scheme is motivating employees to undertake desirable activities while refraining from behavior that is unfavorable from the point of view of the organization as a whole. The motivational scheme and its component motivational factors are instruments whose implementation necessitates knowledge and skills relating to the role of the person in the work process as well as the person’s position in the surrounding world of things and symbols (Penc, 1996, p. 136). The motivational scheme should strive to build an organization based on a qualified staff that, especially in the public sector and local government, can have an impact on success in competition emerging within the public sector organization. The article makes reference to the question of a lack of or a faulty motivational scheme functioning within local government using public administration officials as examples. It is on the basis of research into these officials that an attempt was made at diagnosing and assessing extra–remuneration motivational factors. This was based on a questionnaire conducted in the offices of the local government offices of the Warmia and Masuria Voivodeship at the turn of 2013 and 2014.
