Opis:
The paper is focused on the palaeographic development of the western part of the Holy Cross Mountains, Poland, during the maximum extent of the Sanian 2 (MIS 12) ice sheet and its retreat. The studies were based on archival cartographic data, coupled with new lithological and petrographic analyses of limni- and fluvioglacial sands, i.e., grain-size composition, quartz grain morphology and heavy mineral analysis, as well as analysis of the erratic material of tills. The results confirm the regional variability of the erratic material in the Sanian 2 tills and point to the long-term development of fluvioglacial sands cover documenting cold climate conditions. They also evidence that the western part of the Holy Cross Mountains was the area where two oppositely directed ice sheet lobes (Radoszyce and Sandomierz) advanced during the Sanian 2 Glaciation and that deglaciation of the area took place in two stages. Huge quantities of meltwater released at that time contributed to the intensification of earlier initiated karst phenomena, as well as filling of the existing caves by fluvioglacial sands.

Opis:
Wychodnie skalne środkowego Bałtyku, wysp szwedzkich oraz południowo-wschodniej Szwecji były obszarem dominującej egzaracji tej części lądolodu, która podczas fazy pomorskiej późnego plenivistulianu dotarła po NW Polskę i NE Niemcy. W zespole wszystkich skandynawskich narzutniaków najmłodszych osadów depozycji glacjalnej z NW Polski i NE Niemiec około 30-40% stanowią skały krystaliczne. Ich obszarem macierzystym jest tarcza bałtycka, uformowana w proterozoiku. Do najważniejszych narzutniaków pochodzących z tarczy bałtyckiej należą: granity Uppsala i Stockholm, granit rapakivi Aland, eratyki z Dalarny (granity Garberg, Jima, Siljan oraz porfir Dalama).
The hardrock substratum of the middle Baltic Sea, Swedish islands and south-eastern Sweden are the main areas eroded by the late Pleniweichselian ice sheet. The erratics that the ice transported away from these areas are now found in the youngest glacial deposits of NW Poland and NE Germany. The Scandinavian erratics sampled from the youngest glacial deposits in NW Poland and NE Germany consist for 30-40% of crystalline rocks derived from the Proterozoic of the Fennoscandian (Baltic) Shield. They include Svecofennian rocks (Uppsala granite, Stockholm granite, Áland rapakivi granite), granites and porphyries from Dalama (Garberg granite, Jima granite, Siljan granite, Dalama porhyry), as well as materiał from the Transscandinavian Igneous Belt (Smáland granite, Vánevik granite, Vörlebo granite, red and grey Vöxjö granites, Páscallavik porphyry, Filipstad granite and Kristinehamn granite), from the Blekinge-Bornholn region (Karlshamn granite, Spinkamála granite, Halen granite, Vánga granite, Hammer granite, Vang granite, Svaneke granite), and the gneissic region of SW Sweden (Glimákra syenite, Vaggeryd syenite, Járna gneiss, Varberg chamockit). Other erratics come from younger volcanic rocks, dating back to the Late Palaeozoic and Jurassic/Cretaceous (e.g., the romb porphyry from the Oslo graben and Scanian basalt). The sedimentary cover of the Neoproterozoic, the Lower Palaeozoic and the Cretaceous (from the Baltic Sea, Aland Islands, Gotland, Öland and the Baltic states) are also source rocks. Glacial sediments deposited directly south of the Baltic Sea consist for 60-70% of Fennoscandian sedimentary erratics. They include: Jotnian sandstones, Ordovician and Silurian limestones, Devonian sandstones (Old Red) and dolomites. Other source areas of indicator erratics are located along the Sorgenfrei-Teisseyre-Tornquist zone and further to the south-west (e.g. Late Cretaceous limestones, Late Cretaceous and Paleogene flints).

Tills in fluvioglacial cone of Sucha Woda Valley near Toporowa Cyrhla and Niżnia Palenica Pańszczykowa were recognized during mapping Tatra Mountains in scale 1 : 10 000. Tills with big boulders occur outside maximum range of Würm Glaciation end moraines and probably were accumulated by glacier of Riss Glaciation. Grain size composition, petrographical content (grains 5–10 mm) and compositions of heavy minerals (grains 0.1–0.25 mm) were investigated in tills. Dusty and clay fraction prevails (50–70%) above sandy and gravel fraction in these sediments. Gravel of granite without sandstone predominates in samples from Toporowa Cyrhla and gravels of sandstone with granite prevail in deposits of Niżnia Palenica Pańszczykowa. Granite in tills deposits occur in upper part of Sucha Woda Valley near Hala Gąsienicowa. Sandstone occur in middle and lower part of valley. Different petrographical content of samples from Toporowa Cyrhla and Niżnia Palenica Pańszczykowa could indicate various glaciers accumulated tills or various age of investigated sediments. Non-resistant minerals and magnetite prevail among heavy minerals. These investigations suggest glacial origin of these deposits and delimit bigger range of glacial tills by this day.

Abstract. Petrographic studies of indicator erratics in glacial sediments revealed the existence of at least two lithotypes of glacial tills (marked S and O/W), differing in source area of moraine material. The older one (S), represented by glacial till in Mąkolice, was deposited by the last advance of South Polish Glaciation in the area. The younger lithotype (O/W) includes glacial sediments of Middle Polish Complex. Among them, two varieties (sublitothypes), probably deposited by separate ice masses (but not ice streams), can be distinguished. These sublitotyphes are clearly recognizable only in the southern part of the area under research. Their relative spatial distribution and petrographic features confirm the validity of the conclusions based on the analysis of the relief, which suggests that the ice-sheet during the Middle Polish Glaciation (Odranian/ Wartanian) entered the Piotrków region from two directions.

Opis:
A substantial glaciolacustrine unit in northern Poland, between the valleys of the Vistula and Wierzyca rivers, was deposited in glacial Lake Gniew during the climatic amelioration of the Late Vistulian. It covers an area of 35 km2 and has an average thickness of 7m, but locally reaches over 20 m. Four sedimentary facies are distinguished. The silty/clayey rhythmites of facies A are interpreted as varves from the central lake bottom. They represent the initial stage of lake development. Facies B is formed by a single sand layer that is interpreted as a turbidite originating during lake shallowing due to self-drainage. Facies C consists of massive clay with dropstones and dump structures. Two hypothesis regarding its genesis are put forward: the first assumes sedimentation in a shallow basin with a high input of homogenous fine-grained suspended sediment, whereas the second explains the facies as a result of amuddy jökulhlaup, pouring into Lake Gniew and being sourced from another glacial lake; further research is required to interpret this facies reliably. Facies D consists of thick silty/clayey rhythmites that are interpreted as prodeltaic deposits.

Opis:
The paper presents characteristics of the Pleistocene sediments in the western part of the Holy Cross Mountains. They are subdivided into four complexes and their stratigraphic setting is referred to the updated scheme for the Pleistocene of Poland. The Preglacial Complex includes fluvial sediments characteristic for its lack of Scandinavian material. Sediments of three main glaciations (Nidanian, Sanian 1 and Sanian 2) within the South Polish Complex, are referred also as the South Polish Glaciations. The oldest of these glaciations (Nidanian) is separated from the middle glaciation (Sanian 1) by sediments of the Podlasian Interglacial, represented by clay at the Kozi Grzbiet Cave that contains faunal remains and record of the Brunhes/Matuyama palaeomagnetic boundary. During the middle (Sanian 1) and youngest glaciation (Sanian 2), the Holy Cross Mountains were almost completely covered by the Scandinavian ice sheet, forming glacial deposits separated by fluvial series of the Ferdynandovian Interglacial. The Middle Polish Complex begins with sediments of the Mazovian Interglacial, represented by a pollen record from the Zakrucze site. They are followed by deposits of periglacial and fluvial origin of the Liwiecian Glaciation, Zbójnian Interglacial, Krznanian Glaciation and Lublinian Interglacial. The following glaciation (Odranian) is represented by the youngest glacial deposits that document presence of the Scandinavian ice-sheet in the westernmost part of the Holy Cross Mountains. The North Polish Complex is composed of a climatic warming (Eemian Interglacial) and cooling (Vistulian Glaciation), and is represented by valley and periglacial deposits. The last cooling of the Pleistocene is recorded in faunal remains in the Raj Cave.

Opis:
This research is focused on a small kettle hole located within the Morąg moraines (Iława Lake District, NE Poland). The study objective was to determine the impact of palaeoenvironmental changes in sedimentation and properties of sediments filling the bottom of the kettle hole. Sedimentological, geochemical, and palaeobotanical studies enabled us to distinguish several development phases of the kettle hole, and cluster analysis performed on physicochemical data yielded seven local geochemical zones (JuI/I to JuI/VII). The beginning of biogenic sedimentation in the conditions of a small water body, functioning in the Late Glacial period (4.20–4.10 m), was determined on the basis of palaeobotanical research. Sediments deposited in the lake during its further evolution were rich in microelements such as Ca, Na, Mg, and K, and to a smaller extent – Fe and Mn (JuI/I–III local geochemical zones). The Late Glacial lacustrine period ended with the accumulation of very silty, pollen-free gyttja, with a stratigraphic hiatus (JuI/IV, 3.40–3.20 m). The sediments were enriched with SiO2ter, which indicates an increased rate of slope erosion, and concretions of Fe-Mn occurring below this layer (JuIII) provide evidence for lowering of the water level and even desiccation. In the Holocene, the lacustrine period ended with the accumulation of coarse detrital gyttja (3.20–2.60 m). Palaeobotanical data indicate that the next group of sediments were deposited in the Late Subboreal and Subatlantic periods (2.60–0.0 cm, JuI/V–VII; sedge peat). Their properties were varied and related to hydrologic conditions, limited denudation, and vegetation succession. There was also a significant change in the trophic conditions of the water and consequently in the sediments of the kettle hole, which changed during the lacustrine period from basic to acid, and strongly acid in the surface layer. This reaction may be related to a change in the water regime as well as to human impact in the environment, which led to the colonization of the peat bog by Sphagnum moss.

The Kolodiiv section is situated in the central part of the East Carpathian Fore land, on the right bank of the Sivka River, the Carpathian tributary of the Dniester River. This paper summarizes investigations on the loess deposit succession representing the Late Pleistocene, which is subdivided by several interstadial palaeosols and is bracketed by the last interglacial soil/organic deposits and Holocene soil. The Kolodiiv loess-palaeosol sequence provides an excellent high-resolution terrestrial archive of changing climate during OIS 5-2 in the East Carpathian Fore land and forms the basis for a regional pedo- and loess stratigraphy. The stratigraphic scheme was constructed on the basis of palaeosol occurrence, lithological variation in the deposits, and also the results of TL dating and palaeomagnetic in vestigations. The exposure at Kolodiiv contains an archaeological site with Middle Palaeolithic materials. Four types of palaeopedological taxa have been distinguished within the loess deposit at Kolodiiv: an interglacial (Eemian) soil unit, which includes one or two soil-forming episodes; interstadial palaeosols, which include two weaker soil-forming episodes; thin interstadial two-horizonpalaeosols; monogenetic incipient palaeosols. Palaeosols from the first and second group form the Horohiv soil unit correlated with OIS 5. Palaeosols from the third and fourth group occur as different soil types within the Dubno 1 and 2 units, which correspond to OIS 3.

Opis:
We describe the penultimate glacial – last interglacial transition from the one of the numerous palaeolake successions in central Poland, which have yielded many documented Eemian and Early Weichselian floral records. In the new profile, Parchliny 2016, the lacustrine deposits were analysed lithologically, botanically, zoologically, and geochemically, providing new data that illustrate the environmental transition from the Late Saalian (MIS 6a) to the Eemian interglacial (MIS 5e). Five phases of palaeolake development have been distinguished. The first phase was related to the rapid melting of a dead ice block buried in the tills to form a lake. The second phase documented a Late Saalian initial succession, with the dominance of open steppe communities (Stadial 1), followed by a third phase with gradual increasing density of vegetation, the spread of boreal forests (Zeifen interstadial) and further increase in open communities and the retreat of pine (Kattegat stadial). The fourth phase reflected the beginning of Eemian interglacial by the expansion of pioneering birch-pine and purely birch forests and an increasing proportion of deciduous trees, including oak (Vth phase). Diatom, cladoceran and geochemical studies indicate at least two stages of lake development. The first stage (Late Saalian) was of an open lake (2–4 m deep), in relatively cold conditions and nutrient-poor water with the lowest amounts of organic carbon and nitrogen. The second stage (Eemian interglacial), shows warmer, shallower conditions in which the lake’s primary production increased, the water was well oxygenated, and there were more trophic levels.

Opis:
Fluvial deposits subjected to this study are exposed at the Brześnica site, in the south-western part of the Wielkopolska region in Poland, which was close to the ice-sheet limit during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). Sedimentological analyses, including lithofacies descriptions, palaeocurrent measurements, grain size and rounding analyses and heavy mineral compositions indicate that the fluvial deposits at Brześnica were deposited in braided river environment. The following fluvial sedimentary processes were inferred: (1) shallow, rapid flow alternating with waning flow, (2) infilling of erosional channels with fluvial sediments during flood events, (3) changes from supercritical to subcritical flows, and (4) shallow sheet floods. The results of OSL dating indicated sediment deposition ~65.2 ±1.5 ka, i.e. in MIS 4, that was here characterized by cold environmental conditions and a general shift from meandering to braided fluvial sedimentation style. This finding contrasts with accumulation/erosion phases interpreted previously in this region for that time interval; however, it is consistent with recent studies of fluvial systems functioning during MIS 5-2 and of factors responsible for sedimentation style.
