Opis:
The essence of the article is to draw attention to the importance of preventive measures in the field of addiction to harmful substances undertaken in schools towards children and youth. The results of a pilot study conducted for one of the schools as part of the diagnosis of phenomena related to the occurrence and use of psychoactive substances by adolescents will be presented. In view of the growing number of problem behaviors among children and adolescents and the threats to their development and health, the issues raised are extremely important. The range of occurrence and the reduced initiation limit of reaching for harmful substances are a difficult problem for modern pedagogy, psychology, sociology and therapy. Strengthening preventive actions is a challenge for the modern school, for which the priority should be to care for the integral and multilateral development of students. The school period is for a child and a young person an important time of changes in the spheres of development and shaping of identity and personality. It is important that young people receive support to help them solve problems and avoid risky behavior.

Introduction. Over the past decades, anthropometric studies have focused more on secular changes in body height and weight, and less on changes in head features. Meanwhile, changing socio-economic conditions, especially the nutritional status of the human population, support the need to document some of the metric head features in children and adolescents. Aim. The aim of this study was to determine whether there has been changes over time in the morphological development of the head with respect to socio-economic conditions at the turn of the last century on sample population of children and adolescents from Rzeszów. Material and methods. In the years 1978/79, 1993/94, 2003/04 and 2013/14, a total of 9041 Rzeszów children aged 4 to 18 were examined. Anthropometric measurements were based on a technique developed by Martin and Saller. The following features were taken into account: head length and width, morphological face height, maximum face width, nose height and width, and head circumference. The relevant head, face and nose indices were calculated from the measured data. New indices for head circumference have also been proposed. Results. Such changes as head elongation, shortening of morphological face and nose height, and widening of the nose from hyperleptorrhinus to leptorrhinus were found in both sexes. Conclusions. 1. During the past 35 years there have been noticeable changes in the morphological characteristics of the head, face and nose. 2. Further follow-up to the development of head features is recommended.

Attention to children and adolescents and their helath status will guarantee the future of health of the society. Games as spirit of childhood and the thing distinguishing children from adulthood is a medium with which the child communicates with the world around. Thus, it is imperative to carry out a research on comparing children's physical games in natural settings and computer games which have recently entered into the children world. In the current research, an all-out comparison between these two games has taken place while examining features and outcomes of physical and computer games. The present research has been conducted in a library form and through examination of relevant books and sources. Upon analyzing evidence and sources, it is concluded that children's play in natural settings free from virtual world is far better than computer games and its positive outcomes are more while less risks are incurred. Moreover, computer games related negative outcomes are greater than positive ones.

Opis:
Fungi, mainly yeast-like fungi of the Candida genus, and especially the species Candida albicans, occupy an important place among microorganisms that colonize the oral cavity. The aim of the paper was to assess the susceptibility of different strains to some antifungal drugs. The study material consisted of swab samples taken from the buccal mucosa of 376 healthy individuals of both genders, from neonate to18 years. C. albicans strains were isolated in 79 persons. To evaluate drug resistance phenotypes of the isolated C. albicans strains FungitestTM (Bio-Rad) was used. The study showed that in different age groups the percentage of the tested C. albicans isolates susceptible to all the tested azole drugs varied from 76% to 95%. Drug resistant strains were found only in the eldest age group (4.8%). Phenotypic diversity (drug resistance types) of the studied isolates indicates a wide range of adaptation possibilities enabling colonization of various ecological niches in the oral cavity ecosystem. The presence of C. albicans strains intermediate or resistant to azole drugs among the tested isolates may be due to overuse of that drug group in general therapy and in the oral cavity treatment.

Depression is a 'silent' illness. It often develops in solitude, is full of anxiety and takes away the joy and meaning of life. It is often believed that depression does not affect children and adolescents, but nothing could be further from the reality. Each year, statistics show more and more cases of depression in the age group of 7-18 years. This article addresses the issue of depressive symptoms in children and adolescents. It shows how different their behaviour can be and what signals should be paid attention too. Only adults who are aware of this illness can interpret them and thus trigger supportive measures. Unnoticed depression can progress rapidly. Symptoms cannot be ignored by saying "you're so young, so you have no problems", "smile, it's all right", "pull yourself together" or "you'll be fine". Depression is a recurring illness, and if left untreated, it is very likely to reappear. Today's carers should be extremely attentive, because the COVID-19 pandemic, reports from the war, excess of shocking content in the media fuelled by detailed pictures and videos, warnings of new diseases and crises in the world have a very strong impact on the functioning of children and adolescents. Also, the emotional absence of parents and numerous life problems contribute to the emergence and deepening of mental disorders in younger and older children.

Introduction and objective. Many studies have indicated numerous nutrition mistakes among school-aged children and adolescents in both urban and rural environments. The aim of this study was to assess the nutritional habits of the Polish population, consisting of 7,974 individuals aged 12–17, from rural and urban environments, as well as to identify environmental variations of these habits and to verify the existing information on the incorrect nutrition of school-age children and adolescents. Materials and method. The research covered a group of 7,974 respondents – school-age adolescents with a similar age structure (12–17 years). The study on subjects from secondary school grades 1 – 3 was conducted in randomly selected schools from 2 random Polish provinces; 5 counties were randomly selected, followed by a choice of 2 communes: one rural and one urban. The research technique was a self-designed survey questionnaire. The obtained results were subjected to statistical analysis using the Pearson Chi 2 and V Cramer test. Results. The research revealed environment-based differences in subjects’ nutrition. Breakfast was consumed daily by a statistically significantly fewer subjects from the rural environment (36.31%) than from the urban areas (51.32%); second breakfast was consumed by an insignificantly smaller proportion of respondents from the urban environment (40.00%) than from the rural one (46.00%); dinner was eaten daily by 86.00% of urban subjects and 82.00% of rural respondents; afternoon tea and supper were eaten rarely by respondents from both environments. The diet of respondents was dominated by anti-health behaviours. Conclusions. Most of the respondents displayed incorrect nutritional behaviours. Nutritional mistakes occurred among respondents from both rural and urban environments, with the predominance of the rural areas.

Objectives The purpose of the study was to assess the relationship between the body mass index and sports and physical activities in an unbiased, simple, random sample of teenagers from mid-northeastern Poland. Material and Methods Children and adolescents aged 10–19 years old were surveyed. The Internet-based survey was conducted to collect information on physical activity, leisure time, studying hours, weight, and height. Results Obesity was found to be low in the study population. The overall prevalence of overweight was not higher than 8%. Only 0.6% of participants were underweight. Overall, 68% of them confirmed participating in sports. Boys were frequently more active than girls (> 70% boys and > 60% girls). Participants mostly played soccer, volleyball, handball, or basketball (30.5%); 7% of them practiced martial arts and 16.5% of them participated in swimming. Sports activity significantly influenced body mass index. Obesity was not related to the lack of participation for physical activity in girls but a significant relationship was observed in boys (p < 0.02). The risk of obesity or overweight for inactive teenagers increased 2-fold (p < 0.01). Conclusions We report the overall participation of teenagers from 2 cities in mid-northeastern Poland in sports and physical activities and demonstrate that the lack of statistically significant differences in the body mass index and obesity and overweight is prevalent among boys and girls. Obesity was significantly related to less physical activity in boys, and the likelihood of obesity or overweight increased in inactive teenagers. Thus, we suggest that the importance of overweight and obesity prevention programs should be emphasized. Int J Occup Med Environ Health 2018;31(6):771–782

The article is an attempt to show the changes that have place in the literary representation of the Holocaust in works addressed to young audience. The author presents individual titles of texts including them in the extremely popular today post-memory narrative and Polish educational policy. Particular attention is devoted to books published in the Year of Korczak which were not only meant to familiarize young audiences with this great teacher but also to recall the figures of women who supported Korczak in his activities. In this sense the texts that tell about the Holocaust also testify to the presence and role of women in building a great pedagogical work created by Korczak and thus into fit into the modern phenomenon of herstory. The article is a voice in the discussion on the role of memory which among other things, cannot be petrified on the literary topos of the Holocaust, but should occupy a central place in the pedagogy of empathy.

Socio-therapeutic day-care facilities are specifically dedicated to the conduct of socio-therapeutic activities for children and adolescents from high-risk groups and those displaying difficulties in psycho-social functioning. During the pandemic, socio-therapeutic day facilities continued to aid their clients. The aim of this analysis is to describe the operation of socio-therapeutic day care facilities in Gdańsk, Katowice and Poznań. The data collection method for this project is a semi-structured telephone interview, while data is examined via a template analysis. The analyses concerned 30 socio-therapeutic day care facilities in Gdańsk, Katowice and Poznań. The data collected shows that socio-therapeutic day facilities could be an important source of support for the participants and their families. Elements of socio-therapeutic work were retained in contact with the clients to the highest possible degree via online communication. Online meetings enabled discussion of current difficulties, emotional respite and support. Topics discussed included those supporting health-promoting behavior in an epidemiological emergency. Many of the activities went beyond group work and were mainly supportive or crisis intervention. Staff members contacted parents, helped with children’s homework and even donated food parcels.

In recent years, the situation of child and adolescent psychiatry in Poland has dramatically deteriorated. 24-hour psychiatric wards dedicated to minors are overcrowded and it is almost exclusively patients who are a direct threat to their own health or life that are hospitalised. About 20% of children and adolescents have symptoms of various mental disorders, of which 10% (about 400,000) require specialist care. Depression is one of the most common health problems among children and adolescents and its prevalence increases with age and puberty. Depression can be chronic, with constant severity, or recurrent, when symptoms return in the form of mild, moderate or severe episodes. The mood disorders occurring in the developmental period carry many negative consequences in the emotional, social and educational functioning of the patient. They increase the risk of self-destructive behaviours, suicide, abuse of psychoactive substances, as well as later difficulties in many areas of life during adulthood.
