Opis:
Wellbore collapse is an instability-event that occurs at low mud density and leads to unfavorable economic project, reaching billions of US dollars. Thus, it is important to accurately determine its value, especially in deepwater horizontal wellbores. The main reasons for nontrivial problems with such wellbores are evident: the shale encountered are anisotropic in nature and possess planes of weakness; they react with water-based mud, generate osmotic stresses, swell, and fall unto the wellbore bottom, thereby increasing the non-productive time. To this end, salts are added to reduce the collapse tendency, but it is not currently known what amount of salt addition maintains stability, and does not lead to wellbore fracture; in deepwater, the current trend in global warming means there is a future concern to the industry. As the climate temperature increases, more ice melts from the polar region, the seawater expands and the sea level rises. How to incorporate the corresponding effect on collapse gradient is scarcely known. This study captures the major concerns stated above into wellbore stability analysis. Following the classical approach for geomechanical analysis, Mogi-Coulomb criterion was combined with a constitutive stress equation comprising contributions from mechanical and osmotic potentials of mud and shale. A sophisticated industry model was used to consider the deepwater effect. The results show significant reduction in collapse gradient as the water depth increases, also, larger difference between the mud and shale chemical activities represents higher complexities in the wellbore. In addition, the reduction in the chemical activities of mud limited to 37.5% of the initial value can be practically safe.

Opis:
The selection of data representation and metric for a given data set is one of the most crucial problems in machine learning since it affects the results of classification and clustering methods. In this paper we investigate how to combine a various data representations and metrics into a single function which better reflects the relationships between data set elements than a single representation-metric pair. Our approach relies on optimizing a linear combination of selected distance measures with use of least square approximation. The application of our method for classification and clustering of chemical compounds seems to increase the accuracy of these methods.

Ocena stopnia zanieczyszczenia badanych gleb metalami ciężkimi oraz nasilenia aktywności enzymów (dehydrogenaz, fosfataz, ureazy i proteazy) wykazała miejscowe oddziaływanie presji czynnika antropogenicznego. Stwierdzono ujemną korelację pomiędzy zawartością cynku, ołowiu i miedzi w glebach, a aktywnością badanych enzymów. Wysoka inaktywacja enzymatyczna gleb podlegających silnym wpływom antropogenicznym (strefy śródmiejskie) wskazuje, że obciążenie środowiska glebowego metalami ciężkimi osiągnęło poziom, który zagraża organizmom żywym.
The aim of the study was to characterize soils in the allotments in respect of trace elements content and chemical activity. The research covered allotments situated in the city centre and in areas under the strong pressure of an anthropogenic factor (near industrial plants and/or busy roads) and also in the outskirts of the city where the physiographic conditions are similar but the level of possible anthropogenic pollution is lower. The degree of heavy metal pollution in the examined soils and the increase in enzymatic activity were assessed. The results indicate the local effect of the anthropogenic factor pressure. Negative correlations have been observed between the contents of zinc, lead and copper in the soil and the activity of the examined enzymes. High enzymatic inactivation of the soils affected by anthropogenic factors (city centre) means that the level of heavy metal pollution is so high that it poses a threat to living organisms.

Symptoms of inflammation accompany a number of diseases. In order to mitigate them, folk medicine has used a variety of medicinal substances, including herbs and mushrooms. Lichens are less known organisms, containing specific secondary metabolites with interesting biological properties. One of their biological actions is the anti-inflammatory activity that has been confirmed by in vitro and animal studies. It has been proven that compounds and extracts from lichens inhibit the enzymes involved in the inflammatory process. The following paper is a review of research on the little-known anti-inflammatory properties of lichens.
Dowiedziono, że związki i wyciągi z porostów działają m.in. poprzez hamowanie enzymów uczestniczących w przebiegu procesu zapalnego. Artykuł stanowi przegląd badań nad mało znanymi przeciwzapalnymi właściwościami porostów.

Opis:
Curcumin is reported as an anti proliferative and chemopreventive compound. However, it shows poor water solubility, low bioavailability, and rapid metabolism.. To address these problems, curcumin derivatives substituted with polyether chain were synthesised to improve the hydrophilicity of curcumin and thus its bioavailability. The biological activity of modified curcumin molecules were studied with human normal B-lymphocytes GM 14667 and human leukemia cells HL60 and covered: the denotation of IC50 values for each new compound with use of MTT test and the studies on apoptosis induction observed as morphological changes and the expression of apoptotic proteins, BAX, BCL-2 and survivin with use of Western Blot analysis. All effects were referenced to native curcumin. The derivatives with modified polyether chains number and the position of methoxy- groups were selected for further studies. As was shown, the solubility of the compound does not directly correlate with its cytotoxicity. The maintenance of the methoxy group in the meta position as well as the introduction of hydrophilic polyether chains but not the number of polyether chains may affect the cytotoxic activity of curcumin derivatives against cancer cells. Modifications of the curcumin molecule structure can determine its impact on the profile of pro or anti apoptotic proteins.

Isothiazole derivatives are compounds with potentially interesting biological activity. The work on the isothiazole ring was successfully conducted by Machoń from the Department of Organic Chemistry at Wrocław Medical University. Machoń received an isothiazole derivative – Denotivirum, which is an original Polish drug. This compound has antiviral, anti-inflammatory and bacteriostatic activity against Staphylococcus aureus. Within the group of isothiazolpyrimidine derivatives, Machoń selected a compound with a very strong antitumor effect (IP-10). This combination has gone through a preclinical study. The high antitumor activity was confirmed by the Bethesda USA Research Center, which qualified him for clinical trials [1–5]. The aim of the study was to review and evaluate the latest scientific works in the field of isothiazole derivatives and, above all, the dependence of their structure on activity. The Chemical Abstracts Database and Reaxys, together with other sources of information, was searched using isothiazole keyword. As a result of the search, the majority of works describing isothiazole derivatives for the anticancer (Tab. 1), immunological among other anti-inflammatory, immunosuppressive (Tab. 2) and antiviral (Tabs 3 and 4) activity were selected. Some substances have been tested for antibacterial, antifungal, insecticidal, antiparasitic, analgesic, antidiabetic and neuroprotective properties (Tab. 5). Analyzed were only compounds containing the isothiazole ring, which are not belong to condensed heterocyclic compounds such as benzoisothiazoles, isothiazolpyridines or furoisothiazoles. In conclusion, the most interesting works presented herein illustrate a wide range of activities of isothiazole derivatives depending on their structure, which also extend the scope of biological research revealing previously barren activities of this group of compounds.

Today, environmental water degradation all over the world comes about due to the growth of urban, industrial and agricultural activities. As a result of these discharges without any prior treatment, the quality of river waters in Kosovo has deteriorated greatly. On the basis of the research that has been done so far in the rivers of Kosovo, it was shown that Drenica is one of the rivers that are constantly exposed to the discharge of industrial waters. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to analyze the impact of water discharged from Feronikeli on the water quality of the Drenica River and the possibility of its protection. The realization of this study is focused on the evaluation of physico-chemical parameters of the water of the Drenica River, the content of heavy metals in the water, the analysis and comparison of the results obtained using the standard for the assessment of the ecological status of surface waters of Romania (GD 161). Laboratory assays were developed according to standard analysis methods (APHA). The results obtained, analyzed and compared with the values of the parameters according to the standard referred to in this research, confirm that the water of the Drenica River belongs to the class of water with “good quality” only in the source area, while in other flow stations river, especially in the third station S3 (Ferronikel industrial zone), water has “poor quality”, passing into the category of “very poor quality”. Therefore, in order to improve the current situation, it is recommended to apply the best environmental practices and proper management of industrial waste.

Since 1990 in Poland, a lot of soils have been changed to fallow. At first, degraded soils from eroded areas were changed. Some of them are fallow till today.Research work was carried out on the erroded soils that were under intense agricultural use in the 80-ties.Investigations on the superficial layer of these soils were carried out in 1995, after a four-year periodof fallow conditions. The investigations concentrated on the changes in chemical properties of the humus horizon (0 - 20cm) and changes of biological activity (0-40 cm) formed during the fallow period. The range of changes in the chemical properties was not big. However, biological activity of these soils changed more substantially. A decrease of C organic content was also characteristics. The present authors determined also a decrease of hydrolytic acidity in some soils, according to their location in the relief. In some soils, the content of Mg and K available forms was higher. Some of the soil functions related to habitation were changed too, e.g. visible forms of water erosion stopped.

Opis:
Edible mushrooms have been appreciated globally for their organoleptic, nutritional and chemical properties. In the present study, fruiting body of Calocybe gambosa, wild growing in Serbia, has been chemically characterized (content of macronutrients, soluble sugars, tocopherols, fatty and organic acids) and its bioactive (antimicrobial and antioxidant) properties were evaluated. The results obtained suggest that this mushroom is a source of carbohydrates and proteins (72 g/100 g dry weight (dw) and 16 g/100 g dw, respectively), with a low fat content (1.5 g/100 g dw). Sugar analysis revealed the presence of trehalose (3.82 g/100 g dw) and mannitol (0.22 g/100 g dw). Tocopherol composition revealed the presence of α-tocopherol (7.8 μg/100 g dw), while fatty acid analysis revealed the presence of 24 fatty acids with the prevalence of polyunsaturated fatty acids. Amongst organic acids, oxalic, quinic, malic, citric and fumaric acid were detected (2.8 g/100 g dw, 1.45 g/100 g dw, 11.3 g/100 g dw, 1.3 g/100 g dw, 0.08 g/100 g dw, respectively). Comprehensive antioxidant activity analysis (reducing power, DPPH radical scavenging activity, β-carotene/linoleate and TBARS assays) indicate that the mushroom is a perspective antioxidant source, whereas its antimicrobial potential turned out to be moderate. Nevertheless, at a sub-inhibitory level, the methanolic extract disrupted cell-to-cell communication using Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 as a model system.
