The Polish version of the article was published in Roczniki Humanistyczne vol. 65, issue 4 (2017). Painting of the Cuzco school developed in the city proper and in the Cuzco region in the 17th and 18th centuries. Its influence was not limited to this area; information about the presence of paintings from Cuzco in distant regions of the Viceroyalty of Peru can be found in numerous sources. The tradition which acknowledged Cuzco painting to be a manifestation of cultural mestization is extremely strong. We can easily point at Spanish (colonial) as well as native (Indian) features in both formal and semantic aspects of representations. However, Cuzco painting is not a matter of the past; nowadays there are still studies which produce neo-Baroque pictures, stylistically imitating old paintings. I would like to present neo-Baroque canvas and subsequent stages of work on them, using field research from 2013 and photographs taken in Galería de Artesanía “Fenix” in Cuzco, run by Luis Alfredo Pacheco Venero. What is important in the summary is reflections on cusqueñismo, a phenomenon typical of the city since the 1920s and wondering whether within its scope there is a place not only for the Inca tradition but also for colonial art. Modern search for regional identity is not limited to the pre-Columbian era, but more and more often highly assesses the colonial legacy.

Boliwia zachowała najbogatsze, największe zbiory i najbardziej zróżnicowane kolekcje muzyki dawnej w Ameryce. W ostatnich dwóch dekadach, muzykolodzy, muzycy oraz historycy studiowali wiele z nich. Jednak, jedynie kolekcja muzyki znajdująca się w Misyjnym Archiwum Moxos w San Ignacio de Moxos, doczekała się do tego czasu, wnikliwego inwentarza i katalogu. Kolekcja muzyki z misji Indian Chiquitos posiada wyczerpujący inwentarz; niemniej jednak, katalog owych zbiorów istnieje jedynie w swej próbnej wersji, mimo że minęły trzy dekady od momentu, kiedy rozpoczęto prace nad nim. Inne kolekcje muzyki posiadają jedynie szczątkowe inwentarze i katalogi i nie można na nich polegać. Więcej, kilka kolekcji muzycznych nie dysponuje żadnymi pomocami, które pomogłyby studiującemu w jego badaniach naukowych nad owymi zbiorami muzyki dawnej. Repertuar strzeżony w archiwach muzycznych w Boliwii jest szeroki i rozciąga się od zbiorów muzyki chorałowej, przemierzając przez niemal każdy następujący po sobie styl muzyki minionych wieków, jaki się wykształcił w kulturze Zachodu, aż po dziś dzień. Kolekcja muzyczna z Moxos jest drugim, co do ważności źródłem do studiów nad historią muzyki z misji, choć został on zgromadzony jedynie niedawno temu. To, co najbardziej unikalne w tej kolekcji, to fakt, że jest w niej ponad 100 kompozycji, wokalnych z akompaniamentem instrumentalnym oraz ponad 40 utworów instrumentalnych, gdzie dostrzec można bezpośredni wpływ świata Indian, przez włączenie w owe utwory tekstów w językach lokalnych, jak również przez zastosowanie w ich interpretacji rytmów, melodii oraz instrumentów autochtonicznych.
Bolivia has preserved the richest, most voluminous and varied collections of music in America. In the last two decades and half, musicologists, musicians and historians have studied several of these musical collections. However, only the musical collection kept in the Missionary Archive in Moxos in San Ignacio de Moxos has, up to the present date, a reliable inventory and catalog. The music collection of the missions in Chiquitos has a truthful inventory; however, the catalog of this collection only has a preliminary version despite having passed almost three decades since the beginning of this work. Other musical collections have incomplete inventory and catalogs and not very reliable. Still, several musical collections do not have any of the reference that could guide researchers.The repertoire kept in the musical archives in Bolivia is broad and it starts with collections of plain songs, going through almost all successive musical styles known around the Western world up to the present date.The musical collection in Moxos is the second most important to study historic music and the most recent of missionary nature. What is truly unique about Moxos is the fact that it includes more than 100 compositions, vocal with instrumental accompaniment and more than 40 instrumental works with direct influence on the indigenous surroundings, due to the inclusion of texts in local tongues and rhythms, melodies and autochthonous instruments.

Samuel Brzeżewski is a long-forgotten Polish Baroque preacher. He left behind three written sermons, of which two take on Marian themes. Among those is Zaciąg dworzan.w na kurię Najświętszej Kr.lowej nieba i ziemi  […] – „The recruitment of courtiers to the curia of the Blessed Queen of heaven and earth at a sermon on the day of her birth”  (transl.), written in 1644 and published in 1645. It came into existence on the occasion of the anniversary of the birth of the Mother of God and has an interesting sermon-concept form. In spite of the fact that the author reached for the expression „queen”, from time immemorial applied with reference to Mary, he combined with it an interesting fictional plot by portraying the process of the recruiting of courtiers for the court of the queen (it is one of the few Old Polish texts referring to the manner of recruitment for the court of a monarch). Closer study of various desirable features of courtiers (beauty, education, bravery) leads Brzeżewski to arrive at the conclusion that the greatest opportunities for admission to the service of the Mother of God are gifted to „bandits” (i.e. hardened sinners rejected by all) and „agonizantes” (viz. the dying) – those to whom Mary shows her kindness and magnanimity.

Late Baroque Manuscript Supplicant of the Sinner to the Lord Jesus. Eschatological ReflectionsThe scope of observations in this article will be concerned by Supplicant’s Song of the Lord Jesus(inc. "Jesus, my merciful ..."), belonging to the so-called the popular area. This text was found in a handwritten collection dated to 1744, belonging to the Discalced Carmelite Nuns in Krakow. In this song, we can identify - as a result of eschatological reflections - the idea of contemptus mundi (contempt of the world), originating from the middle ages. Późnobarokowy rękopis Supliki grzesznika do Pana Jezusa. Eschatologiczne refleksjeZakres obserwacji wyznaczy tu należąca do nurtu tzw. popularnego pieśń Suplika grzesznika do Pana Jezusa (inc. „Jezu mój litościwy…”). Tekst odnaleziono w rękopiśmiennym zbiorze datowanym na 1744 rok, należącym do biblioteki karmelitanek bosych w Krakowie. W pieśni – na skutek eschatologicznych refleksji - uobecnia się idea contemptus mundi (pogardy świata), wywodząca się z wieków średnich.

The presented research concerns the functions and symbolism of the characters in "Labyrinth of the World and Paradise of the Heart" by John Amos Comenius. In this work, the characters are largely typified and are examples that serve the author’s in-depth spiritual reflection. The negative features of the heroes are often shown by Comenius in animal costumes. Symbolic associations with the world of fauna refer to the inner sphere of man and show his moral condition.

The Polish version of the article was published in “Roczniki Humanistyczne,” vol. 60 (2012), issue 4. Although still nature did not enjoy a lot of prestige as a genre of paining in 17th-century Seville, it still accompanied many scenes that had a religious or secular character. With time, it even gained an autonomous status and some popularity, resulting rather from decorative reasons. It was to be ensured by presenting various objects made by man, but also appetizing articles of food and beautiful, colourful flowers. It was in this convention that, among others, works by Francisco de Zurbarán and his son Juan, Francisco Barranco or Pedro de Camprobín y Passano were painted. A feature typical of Seville painting was also the use of the language of symbols in still lifes, especially in a religious context, as Zurbarán’s paintings. Historical circumstances connected with the spreading famine and the plague gave the still life a new function. It was to satisfy the longing for the lost wealth of life, showing tasteful and beautiful still lifes, like those in the works by Pedro de Medina Valbuena, Cornelio Schut and Andrés Peréz. The toll of the Black Death also inspired artists. However, they painted works emphasizing the briefness and futility of human life, didactic and moralizing, which culminated in the paintings by Juan de Valdés Leal and his son Lucas.

The article presents the way in which Józef Wereszczyński (born after 1531, died 1598), a Benedictine abbot from Sieciechów, used, in his work Gościniec pewny niepomiernym moczygębom a omierzłym wydmifuklom świata tego do prawdziwego obaczenia a zbytków) swych pohamowania z Pisma świętego i z rozmaitych autorów zebrany i wydany (1585), one of the sermons of a Jesuit Jakub Wujek (1541–1597), which the latter included in Postylla katoliczna “the greater” (1573–1575; 1584). The focus was on the marginalia – those summarizing the matter and footnotes. It was pointed out that Wereszczyński, besides adopting fragments of a sermon Na tenże dzień Jana świętegokazanie drugie przeciw opilstwu a obżartswu świata dzisiejszego, subjected the marginalia to amplification, substitution and abbreviation practices. Although himself not free from negligence, he also corrected the biblical addresses wrongly identified in Wujek’s Postylla.
Dans l’article, on a présenté la façon dont Józef Wereszczyński (né après 1531 et mort en 1598), abbé des bénédictins à Sieciechowice, a utilisé dans son ouvrage intitulé Gościniec pewny niepomiernym moczygębom a omierzłym wydmikuflom świata tego do prawdziwego obaczenia a zbytków swych pohamowania z Pisma świętego i z rozmaitych autorów zebrany i wydany (1585) un des sermons du jésuite Jakub Wujek (1541–1597), inséré par lui dans Postyilla katoliczna « majeure » (1573–1575 ; 1584). On s’est concentré sur les notes marginales : aussi bien sur celles qui abrégeaient la matière présentée que celles qui renvoyaient aux sources. On a remarqué que Wereszczyński non seulement s’appropriait les fragments du sermon intitulé Na tenże dzień Jana świętego kazanie drugie przeciw opilstwu a obżarstwu świata dzisiejszego, mais aussi il amplifiait, substituait et abrégeait les marginalia ; en plus, il corrigeait les adresses bibliques erronément indiquées dans la Postyilla de Wujek, bien qu’il ne fût pas lui-même exempt d’erreurs.

In the 18th century and throughout most of the 19th century an awe-inspiring Baroque palace – the biggest in Royal Prussia – was erected in Lezienko, now part of the village of Lezno near Gdansk. It was dismantled in 1884, and in its place a new, much smaller Neo-Renaissance palace was built; it has survived until now and functions as a hotel. The palace was built for the richest magnate in Royal Prussia, the Grand Treasurer of the Crown Jan Jerzy Przebendowski. In the National Historical Archive of Belarus in Minsk, in the complex of the post-Radziwiłł files, there are materials from the 18th century concerning the estates in Lezno – for example, the inventory of the palace made in 1730 and the register of the construction costs. Both sources are published in this article. According to the sources, the construction work on the palace commenced in 1717 and was suspended in 1726. It cost 183 926 Polish zlotys and 6 cents (23 000 of thalers). In the light of the inventory of 1730 there is no doubt that some rooms in the Lezno palace had not been finished yet. Even in the rooms which were prepared for use, there was no furniture, tapestry or carpets. The reason for this was the fact that at the end of his life, Jan Jerzy Przebendowski (who died in 1729) spent more time in his estates in Greater Poland and Warsaw, where he had a large, fabulously equipped palace. It was not until the subsequent owners of Lezienko, Dorota Henrietta Bielińska née Przebendowska (the treasurer’s daughter) and Ignacy Przebendowski with his wife Felicyta Przebendowska née Wielkopolska undertook to finish the work on the palace to make it suitable to reside. Later, in the second half of the 18th century and in the 19th century the palace belonged to the families of the Grabowskis, Helffensteins and Hoenes. It is beyond doubt that the old palace in Lezienko was to satisfy the lust for prestige of one of the most affluent magnates of the crown – Jan Jerzy Przebendowski. The majority of subsequent owners, who owned several villages, were not in a position to maintain the huge building. Thus, the palace had to give way to a more modest mansion.

The source material for the present research contains chants and sermons written in honour of Saint Ladislaus from 1634 to 1836. A precise survey shows a variety of motifs dealing with the figure of Saint Ladislaus. The main question of the study is to what extent the Baroque speeches transmit the figure of St. Ladislaus as described in medieval sermons? It is showed that there are many links but it it impossible to find a direct relationship between baroque literature and medieval texts.

The subject of the article is the problem of formation of moral attitudes towards the deceased fellowmen in the preaching of the carmelite Serapion Kociełkowicz. The analysis concerns mainly sermons on All Saints’ Day and the Feast of the Dead from a collection of festive sermons written in 1701–1704, enriched with sermons taken from other collections of his authorship. The reflections are mainly focused on the issue of Purgatory and the idea of the Church - Mystici Corporis Christi. The shaping of attitudes towards the deceased was based mainly on persuasive procedures whose task was to influence the listeners of the sermons in order to develop a responsible and mature moral attitude. Helping the dead was a community duty based on universal values, the duty of Christians towards their fellowmen, as well as social values and norms.

In Old Polish literature, literary criticism was virtually unknown. In view of the scarcity of appraisals and reviews, a rhyming review written by a second-rate poet from the second half of the 17th century Seweryn Bączalski has extraordinary weight. In a poem Do tego, co już przeczetł, which crowns his 1608 collection of poems Przestrach śmiertelny, Bączalski evaluates the works of several poets from Cracow of that time, taking this opportunity to comment in great detail on Hieronim Morsztyn’s popular poem Światowa Rozkosz, published in 1606. The reviewer was riveted by an apparent clash: throughout the poem, Morsztyn enumerates multitudinous delights, only to unexpectedly deprecate in the ending their value when confronted with death and decay. This discrepancy hardly motivated in the poem and still attracting researchers’ attention, Bączalski motivates by a biographical key presenting Morsztyn as an inveterate womanizer who, finally, ends up ensnared by… syphilis. This experience allegedly changed the poet’s attitude towards carnal pleasures, and Światowa Rozkosz gave this existential discovery of his literary form.
Le phénomène de la critique littéraire n’était pratiquement pas connu dans la littérature polonaise ancienne. Étant donné le manque d’opinions et d’élaborations à cette époque-là, la critique littéraire versifiée de Seweryn Bączalski, rimeur médiocre de la première moitié du XVIIe siècle, prend une importance extraordinaire. Dans le vers Do tego, co już przeczetł couronnant son recueil de 1608 intitulé Przestrach śmiertelny, Bączalski évalue la création artistique de quelques poètes créant à Cracovie, tout en analysant le fameux poème Światowa Rozkosz que Hieronim Morsztyn a publié en 1606. L’attention du critique littéraire vivant dans l’ancienne Pologne a été attirée par une contradiction nettement visible dans le poème mentionné ci-dessus : dans la majeure partie de l’ouvrage, l’auteur énumérait minutieusement de nombreux plaisirs pour finalement, et d’une façon inattendue, déprécier leur importance à l’égard de la mort et la putréfaction du corps. Bączalski explique cette divergence – motivée dans le texte d’une manière chétive et attirant jusqu’à présent l’attention des chercheurs intrigués – à l’aide d’une clé biographique, tout en présentant Morsztyn comme un dragueur incorrigible qui a été pris aux filets de la… vérole. Cette expérience a changé l’attitude du poète envers les plaisirs charnels, et Światowa Rozkosz a donné à cette leçon existentielle une expression littéraire.

Paper focuses on a poem Mlad užežen u ljubavi, preserved in an early manuscript by Dubrovnikʼs merchant Miho Martellini, created before 1657. This is the most erotic začinka-poem of the 17th century, inspired by the so called cushion customs. The above mentioned poem is a part of a corpus created parallel with the official literary production, and its existence demonstrates the stratification of the 17th century literature, and marks the existence of thematically and stylistically pure folk literature, together with epics, epic poems, tragedies and tragicomedies. That sort of literature didnʼt have to change the readers, to instruct them in virtuous life, not even to give them some aesthetic pleasure. Its purpose was primarily entertainment.

In 1628, pupils and professors of Jesuits college in Rawa Mazowiecka presented to a bride and groom a poem called “Sphinx Samsonica…” - a unique book, full of allusions and references to the emblem of classical antiquity. The poem was created during the thriving baroque period which relished in abundance and variety. It was the perfect time to publish works which had bountiful contents which were as diverse and hybrid as “Sphinx Samsonica…”.The poem, in the fabric of which a few literary genres coexist, is a perfect example of an erudite Jesuit rhetoric full of parallels and with clear citations of many ancient writers. Thus showing that one of the main pillars of the poem is the theme of antiquity. The second pillar is its emblematic character as the multiple layers of this work are visible not only in the verbal area, but also in the pictorial. The emblems are one of the innovative tendencies of this work, tendencies which had just started to appear on the pages of printed panegyrics and which would become a part of panegyric literature in the 17th century. “Sphinx Samsonica…” is original in this area not only because of the presence of emblems in the poem, but also because of the “baroque”, ornamental construction of the work in which words and pictures are woven together in a unique way. Although Sphinx Samsonica… figured in many listings and was also mentioned in the bibliography of emblematic printouts written by Paulina Buchwald-Pelcowa, presenting basic information about this work, it has gone unnoticed for a long time. It is not mentioned in monographs devoted to modern epithalamiums, and it was marginally mentioned in monographs devoted to emblems. The dust of oblivion was finally wiped by Jadwiga Bednarska, who discovered the dormant potential of the pages of the Jesuits work in the first part of her book about Polish panegyric illustrations. In the second part, she considers the relationship of this work with Dutch emblems. Therefore, the work has been thoroughly researched from the point of view of the history of art. However, meticulous attention has not been lavished upon it, both from the philological point of view and also regarding the correlation between words and pictures. No research has been undertaken regarding its genre diversity and the work has been neither published, nor translated from Latin into Polish. However, the philological level is also important because it allows the research and discovery of what is hidden inside Latin comments and epigrams full of allusions to antiquity. This knowledge allows an explanation to the exact sense and meaning of the emblems, which very often are not clear and understandable at first sight. As a result, this article makes an attempt to enlighten the reader of the philological level of this work, and the foundation of the article is a presentation of the opulence of antique allusions which regularly appear in the whole text in a chosen fragment of “Sphinx Samsonica…” . Emphasis is also put on the unique and uncommon structure of the work, the main element of which is the emblems. The rich use of these two elements; their coexistence; and their complementation makes “Sphinx Samsonica…” a remarkable piece of literature.

The article specifies the role of rationalism in the work of a distinguished Baroque author, Łukasz Opaliński. The source material for the study consists of: Rozmowa Plebana z Ziemianinem (1641), Polonia defensa contra Ioan[nem] Barclaium (1648), Coś nowego (1652), Pauli Naeoceli de officiis libri tres (1659), Poeta nowy (1661–1662).Łukasz Opaliński stated that reason is the most important cognitive faculty of the human being. Reason makes it possible to understand the rules of natural law, which is the source of ethical action among humans, and brings on understanding of the eschatological aim of human life, that is salvation. The possibilities of rational explanation do not, however, encompass the mysteries of religious faith or the basic concepts of natural philosophy, such as the elements, which are the principal components of matter.Rationalism belongs to the principal ideas of Opaliński’s political philosophy. He opted for a rational organization of the state and for rational ways of solving social problems (he underscored the role of common sense, rational dialogue of citizens and rational responsibility for the common good). The political formation that is best suited for rationalization of social life is monarchy. Seeing it as a model government, the author realised that it could not be introduced in the Poland of the 17th century, and consequently, apart from the eulogy of the monarchy, he proposed improvements in gentry democracy, especially in limiting of the “golden freedom”.An important sphere of externalization of Opaliński’s rationalist ideals was his theoretical thought on literature. He critically evaluated some examples of Baroque art of conceit. He underscored the role of rational sources of creativity and rational discipline in structuring a literary work, and his postulates in this field were close to the concepts of classicist criticism.

The article analyses the role of Latin as a universal means of communication among intellectuals during the fifteenth to eighteenth centuries. The author argues that the main task of Neo-Latin studies in Ukraine is a comprehensive, interdisciplinary study of literature and the affirmation of the modern concept of the history of Ukrainian culture as an inherently synthetic process. As a result of even a superficial review of the Latin authors of the fifteenth to nineteenth centuries and the imagery of their works, we can learn much about the place and role of bourgeoisie and Polish noblemen in Ukrainian society of that time, as well as look with new eyes at the Cossacks, clergy, and peasants, reaching not only to previously unknown information but also, what is valuable to a philologist, to its refined wording. The representatives of a variety of professional circles, political views, and regions made their contribution to the Latin works in different genres during more than five hundred years – that is why the reader can now afford to choose works for every taste.
