Opis:
The text aims to reflect upon the notion of landscape in the context of exhibitions; more precisely, it aims to do so in relation to the musealization of archaeological heritage and presentation of archaeology. The last 30 years of museum transformations, referred to as “the age of museums,” and the digital shift in museology have had a significant impact on building archaeological narratives in museums and beyond. Immersive and telematic landscapes, currently being constructed in museums, allow for sensorial engagement, broadened perceptive possibilities, and more intense interest in archaeology with the use of complex and convincing visions of the past. Hence, the musealized landscape presented in this paper is to go beyond the traditional criticism of multimedia in museums; it is an attempt to appreciate the cognitive opportunities provided by modern archaeological exhibitions.

Opis:
This paper examines some of the arguments used by archaeologists in favour of collaborating useful for archaeological research and is a form of public engagement with archaeology. It takes as a case study records of 48 600 medieval artefacts removed from archaeological contexts by artefact hunters and recorded by the Portable Antiquities Scheme in England and Wales. The past and potential uses of these records as an archaeological source are objectively reviewed, together with an assessment of the degree to which they provide mitigation of the damage caused to the otherwise unthreatened archaeological record. It is concluded that, although information can be obtained by studying records of findspots of addressed artefacts such as coins, in general the claims made in support of professional archaeological collaboration with this kind of activity prove to be false.

In Poland, there is a problem with the proper storage of portable archaeological monuments. This is one of the most important, if not the most important issue of archaeological heritage management. Archaeological monuments are owned by the State that does not properly fulfil its obligations. The lack of a good system and organization, effective law, and above all, proper storage space for archaeological monuments is a fact and this is a nationwide issue. This article deals with the legal and practical issues related to the subject matter. Several storage and study facilities, which were created in Poland by local archaeological milieus, are also presented. These are examples of good practices and responsible attitudes, which can serve as models to be followed. However, at the country level, the problem of storing archaeological monuments remains unresolved and requires a systemic approach, not the bottom-up initiatives and solutions.

Contemporary Kernavė is a small town, located 35 km north-west of Vilnius, on the right bank of the Neris River. However, the names often used to describe the Archaeological Site of Kernavė are the “Troy of Lithuania” or the “Mecca of archaeologists” (Bitner-Wróblewska et al. 2002). The cultural landscape and numerous archaeological objects situated in the area testify to the cultures which have existed there since the Final Palaeolithic to this day. The Kernavė Archaeological Site, an area of unique archaeological and historical value, was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2004. The interpretation of archaeological heritage is important for the understanding of the origins and development of modern society; it is also important for promoting the understanding of the need for its preservation (see Carman 2015). The paper seeks to present the Archaeological Site of Kernavė in regard to its preservation, management and interpretation.

In the 23rd Volume of the Materiały i Sprawozdania Rzeszowskiego Ośrodka Archeologicznego Karol Leś published an article devoted to the issue of archaeological supervision. He analyzed the practice of issuing permits for such activities and for preparation of documentation created in their course in the Podkarpackie Voivodeship. The article presents various methods of comprehending the definition and conducting supervision, and indicates the resulting consequences. The further part of the article presents specification and statistics concerning permits of particular branches of the Podkarpackie Voivodeship Office for Protection of Monuments issued in the years 2008-2010 and an attempt to interpret their results. The author also analysed documentation created in the course and as a result of these works, and made an attempt of its evaluation on the basis of a permanent questionnaire. Additionally to the concerned article it is possible to present a number of comments concerning the very essence and scope of archaeological supervision, which the light of the law and doctrine on monuments protection should not be identified with archaeological research.

The role of coins is not limited only to a means of payment, but through the various iconographic and epigraphic contents they contain, coins are also a means of cultural communication. The obverse and reverse of coins are a specific form of image, which includes motifs understood as a repeating decorative element that is also a pattern or an iconographic element expressing specific symbolism and themes. Archaeological motifs reflect archaeological monuments or their elements, and their themes commemorate not only the monument itself, but also related aspects studied by archaeologists, e.g. the broadly understood context. The aim of the considerations was to examine the numismatic form of commemorating and popularizing archaeological heritage on the example of selected motifs referring to monuments of Mediterranean archeology appearing on European coins in the years 1990–2005. First, the motifs were analyzed in terms of the form of their depiction on coins, then the archaeological theme with which themotifs were connected was determined and, on its basis, axiological considerations were carried out, the aim of which was to learn a potential answer to the question – why a given motif was placed on a coin.

The discovery of the medieval town of Berestye was the result of large-scale excavations carried out in 1969–1981 and in 1988 under the guidance of Professor Piotr Lysenko. The characteristics of the wet cultural layer made it possible to preserve more than 220 wooden buildings and more than 43,000 objects of organic and inorganic origin. The long-term process of preserving wooden constructions was the first experience in the conservation and museumisation of such objects in the field.

The book presents contemporary archaeology as a very innovative discipline striving for interdisciplinarity and extending beyond traditional research issues and borders. At the same, the authoress postulates a need to reorient archaeology and create a new type of archaeological museum, namely critical museum – “museum of life”.

This article addresses conservation issues associated with designing shelter structures over relics exhibited in open archaeological reserves. Questions concerning the definition of a shelter, terminology and the function were discussed here. On the basis of the research carried out mainly by Italian scientists it has been proved that inappropriately applied or poorly selected shelters contribute to the degradation of the preserved historic substance. The greatest danger to the relics preserved under the shelters is posed by the specific microclimate created there, which is difficult to control, but its negative influence can be minimised when one has sufficient knowledge concerning climate conditions of the surroundings and the reaction of the historic substance in the known changeable weather conditions, and considering the state of preservation of the relics. The article is to draw attention to that extremely important analytical and research process which ought to precede project work and condition decisions about the manner of realising those projects.

This paper aims to present how the past is viewed in contemporary cultural and social narratives, and defines contemporary attitude to the past among Poles. My deliberations are placed in the context of the present-day society/culture and their constituting processes, namely the phenomenon of forgetting the past, democratization of the past, its privatization/individualization, commodification of the past and new ways of experiencing it. The paper will specifically concentrate on the archaeological past - that is the past created by archaeologists, and on archaeological heritage. It address three crucial issues, namely: (1) how changes in the historical context of post-1989 Poland influenced the emergence the renaissance of the past and different narratives about it; (2) what are the most important and widespread forms of presenting and/or experiencing the archaeological past in the present?, and (3) what are the main motivations that lie behind contemporary Poles interest in the past, archaeological heritage and activities undertaken around it? Finally, it is argued that the changes in the people’s attitudes towards the past have led also to a transformation in the hierarchy of aims and methods in education and dissemination of the knowledge about the past within institutions concerned with the past on a professional level.

A significant increase in the amount of materials obtained from the recent large area excavations resulted in numerous finds of wells. For years, these unique archaeological features were not treated as a separate research problem. In order to obtain the fullest research results, an increasing interdisciplinarity involving different fields of science is applied to the studies on wells nowadays. Constructions made of organic raw materials are extremely rare in the space of a typical archaeological site and they are also extremely important sources for gaining knowledge about particular settlements. Wells are accompanied by a certain range of features related to the use of water intake and located in its immediate vicinity. These discoveries allow for extremely interesting interpretations of the functional connections between individual complexes of this type. Functions of wells are an issue that is inextricably linked to the location of such complexes in the settlement’s space. Another aspect related to studies of these features is their extremely rich symbolism. Wells are special archaeological features. Their uniqueness places them among the most interesting objects studied by archaeologists.
