Opis:
Selective flocculation of hematite with starch is a process well-known in practice. However, the separation of hematite from other minerals depends strongly on the methods of starch digestion performed either as heating-digestion or alkali-digestion (different type and dosage of alkali). The purpose of this study is to identify possible influence of the alkali-digested starch on flocculation of ultra-fine hematite when the starch was digested at different concentrations of sodium hydroxide at room temperature. Adsorption of starch digested with sodium hydroxide at different concentration on hematite was investigated by abstraction and co-precipitation tests. Turbidities tests, settling rates, flocculation/dispersion measurement and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic analysis (FTIR) have also been conducted. Based on the results of the above mentioned tests it is suggested that the flocculating power of caustic digested starch towards fine particles may be significantly weakened, while its dispersing ability starts to play a role instead, if the concentration of sodium hydroxide is high enough in starch digestion. When the weight ratio of NaOH /starch is lower than 2, incomplete gelatinization of starch granules may lead to coagulation of fine particles of hematite mostly due to non-selective electrostatic attraction. The weight ratio of NaOH /starch from 2 to 4 helps to flocculate mineral surfaces selectively and efficiently, assuring a complete digestion of starch granules and a small amount of acidic functional products on the starch chain. However, much smaller and homogenous short-chain granules resulting from higher concentration of sodium hydroxide (the weight ratio of NaOH /starch is more than 4) used to digest starch may weaken the flocculating capacity of the caustized starch for hematite and lead to its dispersion.

Opis:
Adsorption characteristics on hematite of caustic-digested starch by sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide were investigated through a series of tests, like adsorption tests, paste titration and zeta potentials measurement, scanning electron microscope measurement (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic analysis (FTIR) as well. An attempt was made in order to identify the possible effects of starch digested with alkali at different concentrations on its adsorption on mineral surfaces. All results pointed out that a different amount of carboxyl groups in the starch gel were harvested from alkali-digestion as a function of concentrations of sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide; more acidic groups were produced if higher concentrations of alkali were added. These carboxyl groups may contribute the acid/base interaction of the caustic-digested starch on hematite. Also, different concentrations of sodium hydroxide to digest starch seem to induce different degrees of its gelatinization from the SEM results, partially attributing to a wide range of its adsorption capacities on mineral surfaces. The optimum adsorption density of the caustic-digested starch on mineral surfaces, 9.87 mg/g hematite for sodium hydroxide and 10.51 mg/g hematite for potassium hydroxide, respectively, was achieved at the weight ratio of starch to sodium/potassium hydroxide as 1:2.

Opis:
Konsekwentne stosowanie opracowanych metod badawczych, w szczególności badania zachowania się betonu w czasie tzw. badanie eksploatacyjne, stwarza możliwość wyeliminowania, a przynajmniej ograniczenia szkodliwych reakcji chemicznych AAR.
Reactions of alkali, contained in cement and/or introduced from the environment, with aggregate in hardened concrete (determined in European standardization with AAR acronym), are complex chemical reactions taking place during operation of cement concrete pavements. Alkali-silica gel created as a result of these chemical reactions, shows a tendency to swell only in a determined content range of calcium oxide (CaO). Due to that, it is beneficial to use additives to cement, which during hydratation of C3S– and C2S– compounds bind resulting calcium hydroxide Ca(OH)2, and are able to prevent harmful reactions of alkali with silicic acid. Consequent usage of worked-out test methods, and basically testing concrete behavior in time (so called operation test), makes the possibility to eliminate, and at least to limit harmful AAR chemical reactions.

Opis:
A rare and protected species of the sedge Carex secalina was recorded in Dulsk near Inowrocław (Kujawy-Pomerania Province) in June 2014. It occupied the shores of ephemeral midfield water reservoirs in the complex of intensively used crop fields. Two subpopulations of this sedge with 36 tussocks in total were found. In the first subpopulation, the tussock diameter reached up to 25 cm, with 12–16 generative shoots per a tussock, while in the second subpopulation, the diameter was up to 10.5 cm, with 2–11 generative shoots. The rapid spread of this halophyte species is probably connected with the presence of permanent soil seed bank. This observation indicates a high potential of Carex secalina to colonise new habitats.

The paper presents a short description of aluminosilicate materials which are microspheres derived from fly ash from coal combustion in power stations. The most important properties of such materials, the conditions of their formation, methods of obtaining and selected areas of application are discussed. The microspheres that were tested came from the Power Plant Skawina. Analysis of particle size and wall thickness of the microspheres and the analysis of the chemical composition have been carried out. This article also presents preliminary results of the alkaline activation of the microspheres in order to obtain a fraction within the zeolite. Alkali activation was carried out in several variants, using aqueous solutions of sodium hydroxide and the obtained results allow to determine the suitability of the microspheres to obtain zeolites in their substrate. Observations with the scanning electron microscope showed the existence of significant quantities of specific forms of zeolites, after alkaline activation processes of microspheres.

Opis:
Turkey has important potential pumices reserves (68% of the reserve of the world) and 56 % of pumice reserve of Turkey is in the East Anatolia Region. It is important to assess huge pumice reserves in Eastern Turkey for its use in the cement and concrete industry. Use of acidic pumice and basic pumice (scoria) as cement additive or aggregate are gaining popularity because of their proven structural/durability properties. This paper presents the results of an investigation to assess the effectiveness of pumice and scoria aggregates in controlling alkali silica reaction (ASR) of alkali silica reactive aggregate using the following test methods: the accelerated mortar bar test (ASTM C 1260) and the scanning electron microscopy technique (SEM). The morphologies, structures and properties of the samples were determined by XRD, ICP-MS, XRF and thin section study. Mortar cubes were specially prepared according to ASTM standards using 10, 20 and 30% pumice or scoria aggregate as alkali silica reactive aggregate replacement. The results are compared with ASTM requirements to assess the suitability of pumice or scoria for preventing alkali silica reactivity. According to the results of these methods, pumice aggregates control the alkali silica reaction whereas scoria aggregates decrease expansion but is not as effective as pumice in preventing ASR. The results of SEM analysis showed alkali silica gel formation and serious decomposition of aggregate texture due to ASR in scoria added mortar bars.

In this study, a series of Co-based catalysts with alkali metal carbonate promoters were prepared to investigate the interrelation between promotion effect of these carbonates and catalytic performance for aniline hydrogenation to cyclohexylamine in vapour phase. The chemical promoters Li2CO3 and Na2CO3 leading to decrease in catalytic activity of cobalt catalysts for aniline hydrogenation. Catalysts with K2CO3 and Cs2CO3 loadings have practically no catalytic activity for hydrogenation of aniline. Results of TPD of aniline proved that presence of alkali metals carbonates restricts the adsorption of aniline on the surface of cobalt catalysts. Further, it was found that the addition of Na2CO3 greatly enhances the catalytic selectivity towards the cyclohexylamine and inhibits the consecutive reactions of cyclohexylamine leading to formation of by-products such as dicyclohexylamine and N-phenylcyclohexylamine.

This study aimed to evaluate possible health effects associated with long-term occupational exposure to low levels of mercury vapors. Forty-six subjects exposed to mercury and 65 healthy unexposed employees were studied. The subjects were administered a questionnaire on experienced symptoms and underwent clinical examinations as well as routine biochemical tests. Atmospheric and urinary concentrations of mercury were measured, too. Environmental concentrations of mercury were estimated to be 3.97 ± 6.28 μg/m3 and urinary concentrations of mercury in exposed and referent groups were 34.30 ± 26.77 and 10.15 ± 3.82 μg/dm3, respectively. Additionally, symptoms such as somatic fatigue, anorexia, loss of memory, erethism, blurred vision and teeth problems were significantly more common among exposed individuals. These observations indicate that occupational exposure to mercury vapors, even at low levels, is likely to be associated with neurological and psychological symptoms.

Anaerobic digestion of food waste is an encouraging technology for biogas production. Pretreatment of the substrate is needed to increase biodegradation. This study aimed to investigate the effect of alkali pretreatment and organic solvent pretreatment on biogas production. Physical pretreatment was also applied in this study. NaOH (0%, 2%, 4% and 6%) was used as alkali pretreatment. Ethanol (0, 2, 4 and 6%) was used as organic solvent pretreatment. The experiment was conducted in a 1 L batch digester under room temperature. Results showed that 0% NaOH generated the highest cumulative biogas yield of 46.1 mL/gVS. The best biodegradability of 37.5% was achieved in NaOH of 0%. The lower concentration of ethanol generated a higher biogas yield. The greatest cumulative yield of 41.5 mL/gVS was obtained at an ethanol concentration of 0% with a biodegradability of 33.84%. Statistical analysis proved that alkali pretreatment and organic solvent pretreatment had no significant effect on biogas production (p>0.05). Physical pretreatment had a significant effect (p<0.05) with the highest cumulative yield of 58.2 mL/gVS. The kinetic model proved that the modified Gompertz was a suitable model for predicting and simulating the kinetics of anaerobic digestion from food waste (R2 > 0.9).

Opis:
This paper contains basic information about new processes for cores for cylinder heads production with alkali silicate based inorganic binders. Inorganic binders are coming back to the foreground due to their ecologically friendly nature and new technologies for cores production and new binder systems were developed. Basically these binder systems are modified alkali silicates and therefore they carry some well-known unfavourable properties with their usage. To compensate these disadvantages, the binder systems are working with additives which are most often in powder form and are added in the moulding material. This paper deals with decoring behaviour of different moulding sands as well as the influence of chosen additives on knock-out properties in laboratory terms. For this purpose, specific methods of specimen production are described. Developed methods are then used to compare decoring behaviour of chosen sands and binder systems.
