This essay aims to describe the difference between ‘barbarism’ and ‘anarchism’ in contemporary Polish poetry. Analysing the critical voices in the wake of a well-known essay by Karol Maliszewski, in which he coined the term ‘barbarism’ to refer to certain contemporary Polish poets, we come to the conclusion that the distinction between ‘civilised’ and ‘barbaric’ poetry after 1989 has been based solely on the literary personae of the various authors. Thus we claim that the generational shift between the poets of brulion and the younger ‘anarchist’ poets may be seen as leading to a certain new kind of persona, which is, at the same time, more coherent (due partly to their clear political statements) and more independent of the poem (due to their non-literary sociopolitical activities).

The work is a discussion of the book It Didn’t Start with You: How Inherited Family Trauma Shapes Who We Are and How to End the Cycle by Mark Wolynn, an American psychologist who deals with the therapy of inherited trauma. The author presents Wolynn’s basic assumptions regarding trauma and post-trauma and its therapeutic system and she emphasizes the popularizing aspect of the work. Afterwards, she indicates the possibilities and directions of interpretation given by Wolynn’s theory in the context of contemporary Polish prose that regards war traumas and is written by the so-called second generation.

The article discusses the existence and functioning of the notion of canon in the social consciousness after 1989 in the context of Polish prose of the last twenty years. It points to two semantic circles connected with this notion: the first circle refers to literature and culture of the nation deeply rooted in tradition and confined in the past. The second circle is of polysemous character and refers to the contemporary literature and culture. The deliberations concentrate on the second semantic circle as the notion of national literature, the necessity of its existence in the nation and passing it to the next generations are undisputable. In the Polish culture after 1989, the notion of canons appears more often than the notion of a canon. The notion refers to phenomena that frequently exist on the border of literature, culture, and social life. For those phenomena, it builds canonical sets of texts defined and perceived as important and constitutive for their authors, and obligatory for their recipients. It becomes the vehicle for new literary qualities at the level of formal, thematic and problematic transformations. It is also a phenomenon that functions in the space of a particular culture and tradition with which it evolves.

The article presents polemic discussions of poetry referred to as hermetic or obscure; the discussion has been ongoing for the past twenty five years. In more general terms, the dispute is over the issue of the incomprehensible nature of poetry. The most heated stages of the discussion reveal the basic and repeated arguments put forward by both parties, as well as  the differences in the perspectives and points of reference, indicating the changes which occurred in literature in the meantime.

The author of the paper analyzes the career paths of Polish film and theater actors in recent years, taking account of social and institutional changes in Polish theater and cinema after 1989. On this basis, current three strategies present in the acting profession are identified: Courtier, Byplay and Celebrity. These three groups are highlighted depending on actors’ artistic achievements and accumulated symbolic capital. The main thesis of the article is that leading film actors, who are most successful on the big screen, forsake engagement in theater. While describing this regularity, the author provides specific examples of actresses and actors - eg. Magdalena Cielecka, Andrzej Chyra, Jacek Poniedziałek and Agnieszka Grochowska. The article concludes with considerations about the various reasons why Polands market for film actors and the theater market have split in recent years.

The article focuses on some aspects of city space in novels and tales of Polish writers (Huelle, Chwin, Kowalewski, Krajewski) debuting at the end of the 1980s. The works analyzed can be included in the typological category of so-called urban prose (proza urbanistyczna) since architectural background is strongly emphasized in their literary world in order to achieve maximum spatial realism through the detailed description of specific places. The article aims to define how the literary description of cities that have become part of the Polish state since World War II follows a broader project of historical-cultural roots and city genius reconstruction.

A form of poetic manifesto rooted in the avant-garde tradition is construed here as a performative project of the future. This temporal quality links it with the Derridean notion of “democracy to-come”. The presented paper attempts to trace an (im)possible connection between poetic manifestos and democracy in Poland after 1989. In pursuance of this objective, the paper briefly presents the only four 21st‑century Polish manifestos that attracted some critical and/or artistic attention: Meblowanie główww, Manifest Neolingwistyczny v. 1.1, Manifest poezji cybernetycznej and Manifest Rozdzielczości Chleba v. 1.7.

The article presents the image of Polish Americans in the Polish press after 1989. It is a continuation of the Author’s previous research pertaining to the Polish press under the communist regime, published in the Polish American Studies. The text is based on an analysis of several hundred articles from: the Polish press addressed to general public, mostly weeklies indexed in Bibliografia Zawartości Czasopism by the National Library in Warsaw; two main Polish dailies, Gazeta Wyborcza and Rzeczpospolita – their full-text archival databases; and from selected weeklies that index and publish their archival issues. The article is organized in three main sections: Polonia and Poland (or Polonia for Poland), Polonia in the USA, and Poland for Polonia. Polonia for Poland occupies the largest part of the text, proportionally to the attention paid by the journalists who presented Polish American aid for Poland, especially charitable activities, sponsoring of Polish monuments and events, athletes and other people. Polonian businesses with Poland are also described. Polish American political actions for Poland are dominated by the NATO enlargement campaign, but other problems, e.g. visa waiver projects, are also mentioned. Polonia in the USA reflects on the discussions on the old issue of the position of the Polish American ethnic group in the mainstream American society and its political actions, some internal conflicts within Polonia, especially those related to Edward Moskal, and some Polish American activities in the USA (or the lack thereof), including anti-defamation. Poland for Polonia presents controversies on the Polonian-Polish relations, dating back to the pre-WWII period. One of the aims of the article was to compare the image of Polish Americans presented after 1989 with the one influenced by the propaganda of ‘People’s Poland’. It turns out that some paradigms outlived the collapse of the communist regime, e.g. the myth of a rich uncle from America, the stereotype of uneducated Polish American masses, and the image of a hard and primitive life of new immigrants. Others have been revised, however: Polish American efforts for Poland are more often appreciated than criticized, Americanization of the Polish ethnic group is not lamented and opportunities of life in the USA seem to dominate difficulties. After large interest of the Polish press in the American Polonia presented at the beginning of the 1990s, one can observe its decline, especially after the end of the NATO-enlargement campaign.

The article is about three texts of Polish culture (a 1989 film by Tadeusz Konwicki, A Tale of Adam Mickiewicz’s ‘Forefathers’ Eve, based on Mickiewicz’s poem Dziady, and two novels: Rien ne va plus by Andrzej Bart, 1991 and List of the adulteresses. Travel prose by Jerzy Pilch, 1993) which seem to bid farewell to the long duration of Polish romanticism. The three works concur with Maria Janion’s thesis who heralded, in a democratic and independent Poland after the political changes of 1989, the twilight of the romantic paradigm as it had existed since the first half of the nineteenth century. A more detailed analysis of these cultural texts allows us to grasp the complexity and the ambiguity of the relationships that Konwicki, Bart and Pilch have with the romantic legacy.

Celem artykułu jest namysł nad sposobami reinterpretacji w powieściach Ryszarda Ćwirleja znamiennej dla kultury PRL formuły powieści milicyjnej która zdominowała rodzimą literaturę kryminalną lat 1955–1989, a która obecnie przeżywa „drugą młodość” jako zjawisko literackie i socjologiczne, pozbawione wymiaru ideologicznego. Rekonstruując dawne realia, pisarz ten tworzy obraz epoki zanurzony w „kulturze nostalgii”. Powieść neomilicyjna jest jednym z przejawów tęsknoty za PRL, w której sentymentalny wymiar powieści wyraża się w dążeniu do odzyskania dla współczesnego czytelnika etosu sprawczej władzy. Jednak jego przedstawiciele, którzy są oficerami MO, stosują dalekie od legalności sposoby postępowania. Wyłaniający się – dzięki wykorzystaniu metody filologicznej i badań kulturowych, umożliwiających lekturę kontekstową – z twórczości Ćwirleja wizerunek stróżów prawa dość często naznaczony jest piętnem korupcji. Można zatem traktować go jako „uzupełnienie” zideologizowanego wzorca, do którego pisarz się odwołuje.
One of the most recognizable cultural phenomena for the culture of the People’s Republic of Poland is undoubtedly the militia novel, which dominated the native crime novel of 1955–1989. After the political transformation, the militia story was forgotten for many years. Currently, this work is experiencing a “second youth” as a literary and sociological phenomenon, devoid of an ideological dimension. An artistic manifestation of the return of interest to the crime novel are novels by Ryszard Ćwirlej. Reconstructing the old realities, this writer creates an image of the epoch in the “culture of nostalgia”. The “neo-militia” novel is one of the manifestations of this longing for the People’s Republic of Poland, in which the sentimental dimension of the novel is expressed in the tendency to regain for the contemporary reader the ethos of efficient power. However, its representatives, who are MO officers, use methods that are far from lawful. The emerging image of law enforcement officers in Ćwirlej’s works is quite often marked by the stigma of corruption. The revealing potential of this formula results from showing the deeds and motivations of the characters as a derivative of their – not always exemplary – mentality, far from the idealized image of MO officers, which can be found in a militia novel. At the same time, however, it is precisely this interpretation by the protagonists of works from the circle of “neo-militia” stories on the border of the law, the blunting of ethical sensitivity, the choice of the “lesser evil” in the name of the fight against the “greater evil” that completes the image of the militiaman with aspects of artistic creation, which are most often missing in the ideologized works of 1955–1989.

The article is an interpretation of the eponymous long poem from Tadeusz Różewicz’s volume nożyk profesora [professor’s knife]. The first part discusses the modes modes of narration of the experience of the Holocaust. The discussion focuses on meanings of the words “memory” and “history”, on the ironic use of pastoral convention, and on the transformation of the metaphor from Cyprian Norwid’s Przeszłość [The Past]. The poem recycling from the volume zawsze fragment. recycling is an important context. The second part of the article is devoted to the friendship between Tadeusz Różewicz and Mieczysław Porębski. The description of the friends’ breakfast points out to an interpretation of their relation in the context of their wartime biography: a death camp for Porębski, and resistance fighting for Różewicz. The poet, in spite of his memory and long-time friendship with the former prisoner, presents the Holocaust as a mediated experience that is virtually inaccessible. However, in many ways he still tries to bring it closer to the reader and does not let the reader forget it.

The author of the article suggests reading Dorota Masłowska’s debut novel Wojna polsko-ruska pod flagą biało-czerwoną from the perspective of the feminist literary critics. She uses Nancy K. Miller’s concept of arachnology. The author concentrates on parts of the novel that have been overlooked so far in reviews and interpretations. She examines a character in the book, a young girl, who is the author’s alter ego. The auctorial subject is revealed on different levels in the text: as a character in the novel, the author of the text that is being read and in a monologue of the narrator, Silny, whose narration is influenced by elements beyond his own consciousness and language. The experience of growing mature and writing is developed in the plot, through the consciousness of the main character and only revealed gradually. It is at the end of the novel that the author finally gives up the mask of the character and speaks for herself.
